The Smackdown Summary - 11th September 2009
11/09/2009
Hello and welcome the this edition of the Smackdown Summary.
Due to some good feedback we’ve decided to stick with the new layout for the foreseeable future.
We’d still love to know what you think about the changes so please feel free to get in touch via the Contact Us page, or any of the usual email addresses.
(By the way, the banners are purely temporary. We kind of rushed this idea through at the last minute and didn’t have time to get anything a bit better made.)
On with the show!

The Smackdown Summary
Opening Segment
The Undertaker Returns
O.K so you’re probably all thinking ‘but The Undertaker came back at the end of SummerSlam, and he was on last week’s Smackdown, what does this guy mean with ‘The Undertaker Returns’?”
Well, as the Undertaker made his way through the smoke to the ring, it was clear he’d changed his image.
Gone was the long trenchcoat and the big hat, dropped in favour of a gothic sleeveless getup with metal studding. It was reminiscent of how Taker used to look in the late 90’s, although he’s still wearing those stupid fighting gloves but I guess you can’t have everything.
Once in the ring The Deadman demonstrated just why he can take a 5 month break and still have the crowds eating out of the palm of his hand, delivering a fantastic promo aimed at C.M Punk.
Taker began by saying he would win the title at Breaking Point and cast his shadow of darkness over Smackdown once more. He then moved onto Punk specifically, saying the current champ is getting tired and his Breaking Point will be realised when he feels the grip of Hells Gate.
He said that when Punk submits he will not only relinquish the title belt, but also his soul and the symphony of lies will end.
Cue Punk’s arrival.
Punk told Taker that he see’s through all the smoke and mirrors and that The Deadman is worse than Jeff Hardy, playing on the fans chemically induced state to delude them into thinking he is something more than he is.
Punk continued to waffle on and said he’s going to revel in watching the crowds faces as their precious Undertaker taps out to the Anaconda Vise, knowing that they will then retreat back into their lifestyles of drugs and drink.
Punk finished by saying he is going to demonstrate the Anaconda Vise tonight on Matt Hardy, then begs Taker not to get involved as he wants everyone to see it and realise they ’should just say no’.
Taker tells him he got something wrong; they won’t be saying ‘Just. Say. No.’, they’ll be saying ‘Rest. In. Peace.’
In other news it now seems C.M Punk’s constant assessments of Jeff Hardy were correct, at least on some level, as the story that the former World Heavyweight Champion has been arrested and bailed for drug trafficking broke across the internet.
I can’t say as I’m surprised, although I am a little disappointed.
I’ll refrain from commenting further until all the facts are out in the open as Jeff seems to be denying a lot of the allegations anyway.
It’s been quite a month for wrestler-related arrests so far, with both Sean O’Haire and Christopher Daniels having scrapes with the law as well.
Match 1
Belfast Brawl Match
Finlay
Vs.
Mike Knox
Knox delivered another promo in a split screen as he made his way to the ring, this time about how lizards shed their tails to escape predators. Nice and irrelevant.
This was your standard hardcore match although nowhere near in the league of some of the bouts from the ‘Hardcore title’ era.
Go backstage for crying out loud! There was a point in the late 90’s/early 00’s when some hardcore matches didn’t make it to the ring, yet now you’re lucky if the guys fight in the crowd.
Knox inevitably pulled out the paper-thin aluminium trash cans and began beating Finlay down with them, before Pump Kicking him over the railing and into the crowd.
However, seconds later Finlay clotheslined his rival back over the railing and any hope I had of this turning into a ‘classic’ hardcore match went out of the window.
Knox regained control and brought a table into the ring and set it up in the corner.
He then whipped Finlay into it but rather than crashing through the table the Fighting Irishman just slid up it and back down like the weight on one of those ‘ring the bell’ games at fairgrounds.
Moments later Finlay hit a hard shot with the Shaleighle and covered for the 3.
Finlay wins by Pinfall.
Segment 2
McCool and Ziggler
Backstage Dolph Ziggler is just about to knock and enter the divas locker room when Michelle McCool approaches him.
Michelle asks Dolph if he’s looking for Maria and then says she’ll check if she’s in the dressing room.
McCool knocks and Layla emerges. She explains that Maria isn’t in there then walks off and stands next to some crates in the background.
McCool asks Dolph what he sees in Maria then theatrically falls off her crutches and into his arms. Dolph steadies her then leaves, telling McCool to let Maria know he’s looking for her.
Layla then walks back over, cellphone in hand and shows McCool her recording handywork, which they both seem pleased with.
Segment 3
D.H Smith Vs. The Great Khali
I think it’s a pretty strong testament to The Hart Foundation that they didn’t put both members up against Khali… Or that’s what I would have said had this match actually gone ahead.
Before the match could get started Kane jumped Khali and beat him down before grabbing a Singapore cane from under the ring.
However, Khali cut him off before he could swing it and instead hit him with a Punjabi Plunge.
Match 2
Tag Team Match
Jeri-Show
Vs.
Cryme Tyme
Normally the term ‘SummerSlam re-match’ would indicate something good on a weekly show like Smackdown.
However, in this case I’m not so sure.
The title is on the line so I guess there’s a chance Cryme Tyme could actually win, but with Jericho and The Big Show both suffering somewhat disappointing defeats to their Breaking Point challengers on Raw, another loss here could be very damaging to their momentum.
I’ll admit I didn’t pay much attention to this match as I was busy changing the ‘Breaking Point 2009 Confirmed Matches and Mini-Preview‘ due to the random axing of the Ziggler/Morrison match in favour of a US Title match.
Jeri-Show picked up the win with Show’s big Right Hand as JTG ’skinned the cat’, which I have to admit looked pretty awesome.
Jeri-Show win by Pinfall.
Segment 4
Teddy’s Big Surprise
Mr. McMahon confronted Teddy Long in his office regarding his current probational status.
He told Long that while Smackdown was good, he didn’t build the WWE on good he built it on excellent and that’s what he wants to see.
Long tells him he has a big surprise next week on Smackdown and will have something excellent for Smackdown. (He had something excellent in Ziggler/Morrison until some genius decided to pull it.)
Finally Vince asks where his picture has gone, as it is no longer on the G.M’s office wall. Teddy says he also noticed it had gone and he is going to track it down as soon as possible.
Match 3
Singles Match
John Morrison
Vs.
Charlie Haas
Unsurprisingly Morrison picked up the victory here although Haas put up much more of a fight than I expected he would.
This was a good match and it seems Morrison can do no wrong at the minute in terms of in-ring performance.
Morrison won with the impressive Starship Pain then grabbed a microphone to talk about his title win last week.
Morrison said it was a great feeling but he couldn’t have achieved it without Rey Mysterio and he’d like to thank him (I can’t believe Mysterio is getting hyped despite his misdemeanours.)
Ziggler interrupted and said he earned his title match and he wants his title match and Morrison suggests they have it right here, right now on Smackdown.
Ziggler refuses and says they are going to have the match on his terms, when he says so.
Morrison asks if he is scared, makes fun of his name and asks if Maria calls him ‘Mr. Ziggles’ before getting the crowd to chant it.
Ziggler says if they don’t stop he’ll walk and after Morrison encourages them to carry on he exits into the back.
I love how they completely glossed over the fact that until a couple of days ago the exact match they were discussing had been booked for Breaking Point, announced on numerous shows and listed on WWE.Com.
John Morrison wins by Pinfall.
Segment 5
Matt Hardy Interviewed
Josh Mathews asked Matt Hardy if his tactics had changed for tonight with it being a Submission match.
Matt said last week they didn’t get chance to finish their business but tonight he aimed to lock in a submission hold and not let go.
Match 4
Divas Match
Melina
Vs.
Layla (w/Michelle McCool)
Dull match in which Layla picked up an upset victory after Michelle McCool played the stereotypical injured heel and drilled Melina in the ribs with her crutch.
I wish I could say more about this match but the truth is it’s late, I’m a little bit tired and it was boring.
Layla wins by Pinfall.
Segment 6
R-Truth Interviewed
Josh Mathews got some more airtime here as he asked R-Truth about the apparent situation developing between himself and Drew McIntyre.
R-Truth began speaking all street, saying that far from the party being over it was just beginning, and something about kicking a dog and a cat.
Truth said if Teddy put them in a match he’d be all over McIntyre like a monkey on a cupcake.
McIntyre then jumped him from behind (sending Josh Mathews flying in the process) and beat him down, as he said he would each and every week.
Main Event Match
Submission Match
C.M Punk
Vs.
Matt Hardy
A repeat of last weeks main event only with a submission stipulation slapped on for good measure.
I still worry about where Matt’s going after this little rivalry, although with the breaking news about Jeff it might not be long before Matt too decides to take some time off or is given a permanent vacation by the ‘future endeavours’ department, after all it wouldn’t be the first time he’d been fired just because it was convenient for the company.
Hardy and Punk put on another fairly decent match although it was clear that Matt still wasn’t back to his best and spent long periods of the match on his back clutching at various body parts, mainly his recently repaired arm.
Both men attempted a few submission holds with varying success although it was C.M Punk who took the win with the Anaconda Vise just as he’d promised, just minutes after almost losing to a half Boston Crab.
After the match Punk posed with his world title until a bell tolled and the lights went out.
When they came back up Punk’s title belt had vanished from his hands and The Undertaker had appeared atop the ramp with the gold in his grasp.
C.M Punk wins by Submission.
