    The Raw Review - 17/08/2009

    Opening Segment

Freddie Prinze, Jr. Kicks off Raw

Hello everyone and welcome to the Live Raw Report! Just 6 days away from

Tonight’s guest host wastes no time in getting Raw off to a flying start, making his way to the ring to a rousing ovation and telling everyone that he’s a life long WWE fan.

He talked a bit about his WWE memories then said tonight isn’t about what he wants, it’s about what the crowd want.

Freddie then rocked the crowd by saying SummerSlam starts tonight, with a Divas Championship match and a United States Championship match.

Just as he moved onto the reformation of DX an eerie music hit the speakers and a guy in a trench coat with a hook in his hand entered the ring.

Playing on ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’, the mystery figure said he knows what Prinze is going to do next summer, before revealing himself as Santino and asking to be cast in one of his movies.

Santino then delivered his rendition of ‘She’s All That’ and then ‘24′, threatening a mock-terrified Lillian Garcia in the process.

Freddie complimented the performance but said Santino should go backstage and practice for a few hours, at which point the wannabe actor happily scurried away up the ramp.

Just as Prinze Jr. was about to book a main event match, (I thought we already had one of those booked?) Randy Orton interrupted him and entered the ring.

Orton said he isn’t happy about teaming up with his SummerSlam opponent and because of this he doesn’t think he’s going to take part in the tag team main event.

Freddie said he understood his apprehension but tonight’s show is from Orton’s home town and he isn’t going to disappoint the fans.

Orton replied by saying he doesn’t care about the fans, then demanded Freddie remove him from the main event.

Prinze said he respected Orton, but he isn’t Seth Green or Jeremy Piven and he isn’t going to cave to his demands. As he began to leave the ring Orton grabbed him and hit his trademark modified Backbreaker, leaving tonight’s host in a crumpled mess on the canvas.

    Match 1

    United States Championship Match
    Kofi Kingston (c)
    Vs.
    Carlito (w/Rosa Mendes)

So one half (or three quarters if you include Rosa) of last week’s distinctly average Superstars main event is opening Raw tonight, and for the United States Championship to boot.

Carlito started the match strongly and grabbed a couple of near falls after stunning the U.S Champion with an amazingly stiff kick to the chest early on.

Kofi finally began to battle back as we’ve seen him do week in/week out, and managed to pick up a couple of near-falls himself with some pretty unique offence.

Momentum briefly shifted again as Carlito managed to avoid a finisher and looked like he was about to pick up the win with a BackStabber. However, Kofi was able to avoid it and landed the Trouble in Paradise at the second time of asking to pick up the win and retain his United States Championship.

Not an awful match but I can see why it didn’t make it onto the SummerSlam card. As for Rosa Mendes, she may as well have stayed in the back.

Kofi Kingston retains the United States Championship by Pinfall.

    Segment 2

    DX’s Greatest Hits

A promo video aired showing some of DX’s best moments.

It actually featured Chyna (and to an extent X-Pac) quite heavily, although they were instrumental in some of DX’s greatest moments, so I won’t read into it too much.

As an interesting little side-note seeing as this segment was pretty short; Sky Sports have begun playing Smackdown Vs. Raw 2010 advertisements before and after each commercial break.

So far there is no in-game footage included but it’s made me realise that it’s that time of the year again!

    Roll on October 23rd!

    Match 2

    Singles Match
    The Miz
    Vs.
    Evan Bourne

The Miz talked a bit before the match, saying he’d set his sights on the United States Championship so Kofi Kingston better watch out.

Anyone else wish Eugene had grabbed that contract last week?

Bourne started the match quickly and effectively but The Miz was able to shut him down with a huge clothesline, followed by some big shots and a modified clutch submission hold.

This domination continued until Bourne hit a kick as The Miz flew from the top rope. He then landed some amazing highlight reel offence to grab a long 2 count.

The Miz eventually picked up the win against the flow of the match by hitting a ‘Skull Crushing Finale’ (his new finisher apparently, a kind of Reverse Russian Legsweep) for the 3 count.

    The Miz wins by Pinfall.

    Segment 3

    DX Return

After another run through of last week’s DX promo’s a customised DX limo pulls into the parking lot. Triple H gets out and eventually after some persuasion, so does Shawn Michaels.

On the way to the ring they first bump into Jillian Hall, who performs her own rendition of the DX theme tune and gets a garbage can over her head for her troubles.

Santino then jumps out from behind them and continues his acting from earlier until Shawn hits him with a Sweet Chin Music.

After one of the longest ring entrances I can ever remember seeing and a crowd reaction close to a Rock Vs. Austin WrestleMania Main Event, Triple H asked Michaels if it was good to be back and he answered yes.

The Game then asked ‘Are You Ready?’ and out of nowhere Priceless appeared and ambushed DX, beating HBK down pretty badly.

Triple H attempted to make the save but was unable to do so and instead got drilled with Michaels’ cowboy boot which Rhodes had ripped from his foot.

DiBiase grabbed the microphone and told Triple H that Priceless are ready, before delivering a couple more shots and leaving up the ramp.

    Match 3

    Divas Championship Match
    Mickey James (c)
    Vs.
    Gail Kim

As Diva matches go, this should be a pretty good one provided it’s given the chance to run and doesn’t get ruined by interference in the early going.

Gail almost picked up a win a couple of times in the early going, and then the match descended into a farce.

James went for the Jump-Swinging DDT and completely messed it up, although King and Cole covered this well by saying Kim had managed to block the move.

James then went for a Chick Kick and completely missed with that too, before drilling Kim with a forearm and picking up a 3 count.

It was such a bad ending that they didn’t even bother showing a replay.

Mickey James retains the Divas Championship by Pinfall.

    Segment 4

    Main Event Hype

After informing everyone that Freddy Prinze, Jr. has been given the all clear from the local medical facility and has returned to the arena, Michael Cole threw things backstage where he claimed Josh Mathews was about to interview a very special guest.

    Who could it be?

    Hulk Hogan?

    The Rock?

    Val Venis?

The team of Steve Blackman & Al Snow, otherwise known as HeadCheese?

Oh, no wait… It’s John Cena.

Josh asked him how he felt about teaming with Orton tonight.

Cena said that despite Orton’s success he has problems, problems with being his partner tonight, problems with wrestling infront of the crowd here tonight and problems being a man when things don’t go his way.

Cena says that everyone has problems but the difference is they face them head on rather than trying to run away from them and for him tonight will be no different.

He then tried to rally Orton into fighting alongside him tonight, but said come SummerSlam he will be taking the WWE Championship.

Finally Jericho interrupted the interview and said his biggest problem is going to be the 7ft monster he has to deal with tonight.

    Match 4

    Singles Match
    M.V.P
    Vs.
    Jack Swagger

When the show resumed after the commercial break this match was already underway, and it didn’t last long at all.

After taking control Swagger beat M.V.P down in the corner and refused to let up despite the referee’s best attempts to stop him.

Finally the official had no choice but to disqualify the All American American.

After the bell M.V.P jumped Swagger and dumped him out of the ring to give himself the upper hand in this building rivalry.

Freddie Prinze, Jr. was then shown making his way through the back and towards the ring, looking a little worse for wear.

    M.V.P wins by Disqualification.

    Match 5

    Falls Count Anywhere Match
    Chavo Guerrero
    Vs.
    Hornswoggle

Oh joy, another match in this little feud (no pun intended).

Hornswoggle disappeared under the ring as soon as the match began and Chavo decided to follow him.

Moments later Chavo appeared at the other side looking shocked, while Hornswoggle headed up the ramp and to the back.

Chavo pursued him and asked Primo if he saw where he went. Primo pointed him in the right direction and the chase continued.

Hearing a noise behind a door, Chavo opened it, only to get hit in the face with a paint can, Home Alone Style.

Hornswoggle emerged from a door opposite and pinned Chavo for yet another ridiculous win.

Mark Henry then showed up from behind the paint can door.

Chavo blamed him for the paint but Henry denied all involvement and walked away.

As Chavo stood holding his face Macauley Culkin, yes THAT Macauley Culkin, walked out from the same door and told Chavo it wasn’t funny.

    Hornswoggle wins by Pinfall.

    Segment 5

    Money in Charge

Next week Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather is going to be in charge of Raw, so expect sparks to fly between him and The Big Show.

It was then revealed that 76% of fans voted for Cena and Orton over Jericho and The Big Show in the upcoming Main Event Match.

    Main Event Match

    Tag Team Match
The Big Show & Chris Jericho
    Vs.
    Randy Orton & John Cena

Just as the match was about to start Freddie Prinze, Jr appeared at the top of the ramp and made this a Lumberjack match. He said he’d picked the Lumberjacks himself and they don’t like Orton very much.

Mark Henry, M.V.P, Jamie Noble, Primo, Evan Bourne and Kofi Kingston then surrounded the ring and the match began.

During the commercials Cena ended up on the outside and didn’t get touched, while as soon as Jericho got dumped out there they attacked like wolves.

After Cena had taken a beating from The Big Show, Orton held his hand out and seemingly looked like he wanted a tag, only to retract it when Cena got close enough.

Cena eventually forced Orton into the ring with a hard blind tag.

Big Show hit a huge Spear seconds later, sending Orton to the outside for the first time where the Lumberjacks surrounded him and forcefully returned him to the action.

Show continued the beating then tagged in Jericho, who locked in a Sleeper which Orton eventually reversed.

As Orton crawled towards his corner Cena shouted loudly for the tag, but Jericho was able to get up and prevent it from being made, tagging Show back in to continue the beating.

Once again Show tagged in Jericho and once again Orton managed to get the better of him and look for the tag.

Orton finally managed to get the tag and Cena exploded into the ring, taking Show off the apron and hitting Jericho with the Attitude Adjustment to pick up the win.

Almost instantly Orton hit Cena with the RKO, then left him at the mercy of Jericho and Show.

The Lumberjacks jumped in the ring to help, buying Cena just enough time to recover and dump the Unified Tag Team Champions to the outside as the show ended.

John Cena & Randy Orton win by Pinfall.

    The ECW Digest - 18/08/2009

    Opening Match

    Singles Match
    Hurricane Helms
    Vs.
    Paul Burchill (w/Katie Lea)

“In an age desperate for a hero, comes a man…

Strong, lightning fast and unyielding in his fight for good!”

A movie-trailer style intro plays before Hurricane’s entrance, featuring the message above. It was pretty cool, but I hope to god it doesn’t play EVERY time he makes an entrance.

Now I could be wrong here, but this new Hurricane doesn’t looks like Gregory Helms, although it’s probably just me.

Burchill started strongly but The Hurricane was able to battle back and take control, hitting a huge cross-body from the top rope to the outside just before the break to solidify his advantage.

As is often the case, when the action returned from the commercial break, Hurricane had lost the advantage and Burchill had slowed the match down with a Headlock, which he then followed with another submission.

Throughout the match Striker and Mathews constantly talked about how most people think The Hurricane is Gregory Helms, but the jury is still out as even WWE.Com has 2 profiles listed for them.

Whoever the Hurricane is, he seemed a bit rusty. Despite that he was still able to pick up the victory with the Eye of the Hurricane.

The longer the match went on, the more The Hurricane began to resemble Gregory Helms.

As good as a gimmick where Gregory Helms isn’t ‘The Hurricane’ would have been, it doesn’t look like that’s the route they are taking here.

    Hurricane Helms wins by Pinfall.

    Segment 1

    Dreamer Interviewed

    ECW have a new interviewer.

She’s called Courtney Taylor (real name Beverley Mullins) and is a former Hooters girl and Playboy model.

Taylor asked Dreamer how he felt about teaming up with Christian tonight to take on William Regal and Vladimir Kozlov.

Dreamer said he and Christian are still good friends and he’s actually looking forward to facing someone he doesn’t like.

William Regal appeared and Dreamer told Taylor to leave.

Regal asked Dreamer how his arm was and it looked like the two might brawl, until Vladimir Kozlov attacked the ECW Original from behind, severely beating him.

Kozlov then held him in place while Regal hit him with a Knee Trembler, leaving him down and out on the floor.

    Segment 2

The Abraham Washington Show with Goldust

Washington thanks everyone and the big ‘APPLAUSE’ appears on the titan-tron. Rather than applause the fans choose to boo, prompting Washington to insult them and imply that people in Kansas struggle to read.

Washington welcomes Goldust to the show then asks him about his current rival; Sheamus.

Goldust tries to answer but struggles with his tourettes, before Abraham interrupts him and pokes fun.

Washington suspects he is being Punk’d and Goldust has to explain that he got electricuted 6 years ago and ever since has suffered with tourettes.

Washington mocks some more then introduces Sheamus as his second guest.

Sheamus refuses to sit down and tells Goldust that he got lucky last week and things between them aren’t over by a long shot.

After a rather tense staredown, Goldust breaks the tension with a loud tick and Washington wraps up the show.

    Segment 3

    Update on Dreamer

Backstage ECW’s newest reporter asks General Manager Tiffany for an update on Tommy Dreamer’s condition.

Tiffany says he has a concussion and is awaiting further assessment. She then says if Christian can find another partner, which can be anyone on the roster, then the main event will still go ahead tonight.

    Match 2

    Singles Match
    Zack Ryder
    Vs.
    Yoshi Tatsu

A good match from two very promising up and comers here.

Ryder played the heel very well so I was surprised when he picked up a clean victory.

Tatsu reversed the Zack Attack before hitting a Senton and looking to land a Springboard Elbow.

Ryder got his knee up and caught Tatsu as he dropped, hooking the leg for the 3 count seconds later.

    Zack Ryder wins by Pinfall.

    Segment 4

    Christian’s New Partner

Backstage Christian tells Tiffany he’s happy to face Regal and Kozlov alone.

She says she can’t let that happen and tells him he needs a partner.

Christian asks for more time but she says there isn’t any as the match is next.

A door slams open off camera and Christian points in it’s direction and says ‘That’ll work’.

Hmm, so Christian needs a partner to take on his rival William Regal and KOZLOV… Who is big, powerful and hasn’t exactly seen eye to eye with Kozlov recently… I wonder.

    Main Event Match

    Tag Team Match
    William Regal & Vladimir Kozlov
    Vs.
Christian & Tommy Dreamer Ezekiel Jackson

    Well there’s a huge surprise.

Ezekiel Jackson is revealed as Christian’s new partner, man I did NOT see that coming!

Jackson is a risky partner for Christian, as it hasn’t always been clear recently if he’s a heel or a face and I wouldn’t be surprised if there isn’t a sting in the tail of this one.

Christian and Regal start the match while the crowd immediately begin chanting ‘Regal Sucks’.

Regal and Kozlov began making frequent tags, both dominating Christian and cutting him off from Jackson when in the ring.

Eventuall Jackson burst into the ring and looked to be going for Kozlov, only to hit Christian with his modified Eurinagi and stand by as Regal covered for the 3 count.

Well I hate to say I told you so, but there you go. It was pretty obvious to be honest.

After the bell Kozlov and Jackson wore out the ECW champion with a couple of finishers before Regal raised their hands as the show went off air.

William Regal & Vladimir Kozlov win by Pinfall.

    The Superstars Recap - 20/08/2009

    Opening Match

    Divas Singles Match
    Kelly Kelly
    Vs.
    Beth Phoenix

So far the SummerSlam card is happily devoid of any Diva’s action and I personally hope it stays that way (partially because the Diva’s matches are usually average at best, but mainly because I’ve already done all the SummerSlam articles and it would mean changing them.)

I can’t believe I’m going to say it, but this match wasn’t bad…as Diva matches go.

Phoenix controlled the match with sheer power while Kelly hit some nice offence on the counter.

In the end it was the power that won out, as Phoenix hit a Glam Slam to pick up the three count and put her self in position for a shot at the Divas Championship.

    Beth Phoenix wins by Pinfall.

    Match 2

    Singles Match
    Shelton Benjamin
    Vs.
    Tyler Reks

Shelton seems to have been slowly turning face in the past few weeks, so it was a surprise to see him facing Reks rather than Zack Ryder, who he has recently had a few altercations with.

Shelton wrestled the match in an aggressive and heelish manner, picking up the win with PayDirt in what was quite an open contest.

Despite facing another rising face and showing little concern for his welfare during the match, Shelton still played to the crowd afterwards so it seems he is still transforming into a fan favourite and this impressive performance will have done no harm.

    Shelton Benjamin wins by Pinfall.

    Segment 1

    Word Up

    Today’s word is:

Suspect: A term used to identify any person, place or thing as being suspicious.

Anyone feel like they might be running out of ‘Street’ words? That’s just a real word with a legitimate definition.

Cryme Tyme are feeling down about their match at SummerSlam and it takes a motivational speech from Slam Masta J to pep them up.

    Match 3

    Singles Match
    R-Truth
    Vs.
    Charlie Haas

The writers really need to find something for R-Truth to do.

I’m glad they seem to have dropped all that ‘Delicious/Pretty Ricky’ rubbish because it was awful, but wrestling in non-point matches on Superstars isn’t much more of a step up.

I skimmed through this match, but it seemed like Haas was pretty dominant until Truth caught him with the Lie Detector out of nowhere to grab the win (which Michael Cole described as a ‘delicious victory’. Uh oh, hope I haven’t spoken too soon.)

    R-Truth wins by Pinfall.

    Main Event Match

    Singles Match
    Mark Henry
    Vs.
    Chris Masters

This wasn’t the worst Superstars main event I’ve seen by a long shot, but there was nothing ground breaking either.

Probably the most interesting part of the match was The King admitting that The Masterlock was just a Full Nelson, then doing his best to rationalise that it was Master’s strength that made it different.

Masters continually went for the Masterlock but was unable to clamp it onto the enormous frame of Henry.

The end of the match was completely unbelievable, not in a good ‘oh my god’ way, but more in a ‘why the hell did he do that’ way.

Henry managed to catch Masters in the right position for a Worlds Strongest Slam, right in the centre of the ring. He then wandered around smiling and decided to hit the slam as close to the ropes as possible, leading to Masters grabbing the bottom rope and preventing the pinfall.

Masters then left up the ramp, choosing to take the loss by count out rather than continue to fight Henry.

After the match The King once again came to the rescue, implying more damage is done at the edges of the ring as it is harder than the centre. While that might be true, it was blatantly obvious that it wasn’t the reason it happened.

Mark Henry wins by Count Out.

    The Smackdown Summary - 21/08/2009

    Opening Match

    Six Man Tag Team Match
    Rey Mysterio & Cryme Tyme
    Vs.
Dolph Ziggler, The Big Show & Chris Jericho

Smackdown is opening and closing tonight with 6 man tag team matches tonight, perhaps someone in the back got a little carried away.

The best part of this for me was Jericho and Mysterio rekindling their rivalry from a month or so ago at the start and the end of the match.

Mysterio looked like he had things tied up when he hit the 619 on Jericho after things had completely broken down. However, The Big Show struck with an enormous right hand just seconds later, then Ziggler grabbed a tag to cover for a crucial win heading into SummerSlam.

Not an awful match but I think it will be completely overshadowed by the main event 6 man tag match.

Dolph Ziggler, The Big Show & Chris Jericho win by Pinfall.

    Segment 1

    Matt Hardy: The Interview

Josh Mathews sat down with Matt Hardy backstage to find out what is going on between him and Jeff as of late.

Matt said that ever since he was a kid he’s looked after his little brother, because that’s how his family was brought up.

Josh questions why he spent the best part of half a year preventing his brother from winning the title.

Matt says it’s hard to go from being the older and more competitive brother, to taking a back seat to your younger brother.

He said everything he did was a huge mistake, probably the biggest mistake of his entire life.

He finished by saying that tonight they are going to move past it and nothing will feel better for him than standing alongside his little brother in the ring once again.

I still think he’s going to beat the hell out of Jeff at SummerSlam.

    Segment 2

    Kane and Khali

Kane makes his way to the ring and says that last week he proved he is the only dominant giant on Smackdown.

He says the difference between the two is that Khali isn’t a monster who has compassion and emotion, something Kane replaces with detest and hate.

Khali then appears and gets the better of Kane, despite the Big Red Machine grabbing a steel chair.

    Match 2

    Singles Match

    Mike Knox
    Vs.
    Finlay

While Knox entered a split screen showed a video of him from earlier in the night.

He told Finlay he understands that he is suffering from Fear Paralysis Reflex, continuing his psychotic doctor type routine.

Knox dominated Finlay for most of the match, focusing on the spine which he slammed into the steel steps last week.

Finlay did manage to mount a comeback and even grabbed a near fall, enraging Knox who went into a frenzy and began reigning forearms down on the Fighting Irishman.

After being warned twice the referee had no option but to disqualify Knox and award Finlay the victory.

After the bell Knox dragged his opponent to the outside and just like last week began setting up the steel steps.

Finlay managed to score a shot with the Shaleighle but it barely seemed to phase Knox and moments later the ring steps met with Finlay’s head to leave him down and out at ringside.

    Finlay wins by Disqualification.

    Segment 3

    Jeff Hardy on TLC Matches

Tables, Ladders and Chairs now litter the ring and ringside area as Jeff makes his way out to talk about the TLC World Heavyweight Championship match at SummerSlam.

Jeff kicks off the segment by saying that he and his brother Matt are now at peace.

He then began laying the seeds for his possible exit from the WWE, by saying that doctors have been telling him all week that it might be best for him to not wrestle at SummerSlam and retire now while he still can.

Jeff says he’s never been one to take doctor’s advice then climbs the ladder in the centre of the ring, coming face to face with his own world title.

He tells Punk that it’ll take more than a chair shot to stop him competing and right on cue the #1 contender emerges from the back and makes his way to the ring.

Punk asks Jeff if he is nervous being so ‘high’… up on the ladder. He then accuses Jeff and everyone else in the crowd of being drunk, before going into his usual preachy rant.

Amongst other things Punk says his rival is addicted to the adulation of the fans and says the TLC match at SummerSlam will be Jeff’s last match.

Punk says he has to get rid of Jeff so he can save the fans from themselves, something he will do by hurting Jeff at SummerSlam.

Punk says the fans are enabling Jeff by cheering for him and he is enabling them as they are living vicariously through someone who thinks he can fly.

Jeff says he knows he can fly and Punk says he’ll find out, trying to push the ladder over and dump Jeff to the outside.

Jeff quickly dismounted the ladder and hit Punk with a Twist of Fate, leaving him down in the ring.

    Match 3
    Divas Tag Team Match
    Maria & Melina
    Vs.
    Layla & Natalya

Womens Champion Michelle McCool was on commentary duty for this match.

Long story short Melina picked up the win over Natalya with the Sunset Flip Powerbomb.

Melina & Maria win by Pinfall.

    Segment 4

    Word Up & Rey Interviewed

If you want to know more about the Word Up bit scroll up to segment 1 of the Superstars Recap, because it was exactly the same.

It actually made a lot more sense being on Smackdown as Cryme Tyme didn’t really have anything to be upset about on Superstars, which makes me think they played it by accident the first time round.

Mathews then interviewed Rey backstage and asked about his match with Ziggler at SummerSlam. Rey said that as it was in Cali he’s going to put on a show for the fans, then said he respects Ziggler’s athletic ability if not his attitude but if he wants to take the title he will have to bring his A game.

    Main Event Match

    Six Man Tag Team Match
    C.M Punk & The Hart Dynasty (w/Natalya)
    Vs.
    John Morrison & The Hardys

Man I didn’t realise how much I’d missed the Hardys teaming together until that old theme began to play and they made their way to the ring in unison.

Matt looks like he has bulked up since his rivalry with Jeff ended, possibly down to the broken hand restricting his usual regime.

During this match Matt and Jeff (as you’d expect them to) displayed some of the unique double team offence that helped them become one of the most loved tag teams in the WWE and Morrison slotted right in with the dynamic of the team from the start.

Although control of the match flipped between both teams, Morrison and The Hardys seemed to deliver more continual offence than their counterparts although towards the end of the match C.M Punk viciously tee’d off on Jeff with leg drops and elbows.

As always things broke down at the climax of the match, with everyone but Punk and Matt on the outside. Jeff hung Punk up over the top rope and Matt hit the Twist of Fate to pick up the win.

Afterwards Matt, Jeff and Morrison celebrated in the ring and the brothers embraced as the show went off the air.

John Morrison & The Hardys win by Pinfall.
