The Superstars Recap
Opening Match
Divas Match
Melina
Vs.
Alicia Fox
Given that I really couldn’t care less about this match I decided to do a little research on Fox’s former client; D.J Gabriel (aka Steven Lewington.)
He hasn’t been seen since Fox got her lucrative draft to Raw which saw her inexplicably turn heel and begin gunning for Diva gold.
I feared he’d been a victim of the WWE’s ‘Future Endeavours’ press releases, but it turns out that isn’t the case.
The Wokingham-born former All Star Wrestling British Heavyweight Champion is still under contract with WWE and wrestling masked as ‘Mr. FCW’ in Florida Championship Wrestling.
Before that he dropped the ‘DJ’ part of his name and for a time took on the persona of a ‘British Gentleman’, which I’d love to see pushed up onto the main card, so fingers crossed.
Melina won this match with that flippy Powerbomb thing she does, the crowd seemed to enjoy it.
Melina wins by Pinfall.
Segment 1
Ask The Divas
This week the divas were asked about New Years Resolutions and Traditions.
I’m hoping someone’s New Years Resolution is to can this damn segment, or at the very least move it onto WWE.Com exclusively.
Match 2
Singles Match
Shelton Benjamin
Vs.
Vance Archer
No offence to Goldust, but finally we get to see Archer in an actual competitive match tonight.
Benjamin’s coming off an ECW Championship push and although he didn’t take the gold, if Archer beats him here tonight it could certainly propel him into the main event picture, especially with his inclusion in the ECW Homecoming match.
This was indeed as competitive a match as you’re likely to see for the rest of 2009 and although the result went Shelton’s way, the momentum went to Archer.
After getting tied up in the ropes Benjamin slapped Archer, sending him into a rage that led to his disqualification.
After the bell Archer hit his dismal-looking reverse DDT finisher to put an exclamation point on the whole performance.
Good stuff.
Shelton Benjamin wins by Disqualification.
Match 3
Tag Team Match
Cryme Tyme
Vs.
Mike Knox & Charlie Haas
Charlie Haas? What the hell?
I imagine the booking team’s conversation went along the lines of:
“Who can we put Cryme Tyme against? Hart Dynasty? Hmm, better not eh…’
‘How about… Mike Knox?’
‘Yeah, sounds good, but with who? Can’t be Kane. Chavo’s on the wrong brand, Jimmy Wang Yang’s not a heel…’
‘Is Charlie Haas still knocking about?’
‘Done’
Knox and Haas actually controlled a lot of the match, but after things broke down (as usual) JTG picked up the win over the former member of the World’s Greatest Tag Team.
Cryme Tyme win by Pinfall.
Main Event Match
Tag Team Match
M.V.P & Chris Masters (w/Eve)
Vs.
Carlito & Jack Swagger
I’d have much preferred it if this had just been Masters Vs. Carlito.
A few weeks back The Informant revealed that the creative team were losing patience with Jack Swagger, who they had hoped would be ‘the next big thing’ in terms of Raw heels.
I have to say rather than losing patience, I’m just losing interest, and the same can be said of M.V.P.
In my opinion Swagger hasn’t got much about him other than having a very strong technical ability.
His promo work isn’t really the same standard as someone like The Miz or C.M Punk and unless you pay close attention most of his matches seem to blur into each other.
M.V.P on the other hand has great promo delivery but isn’t really at his best when he’s portraying a mediocre face character.
Carlito has the ability to be both a likeable face and a hated heel, much like Chris Jericho but for me at least M.V.P makes a far superior arrogant heel persona.
The basic premise behind this match was that Swagger and Carlito managed to keep Masters out of the ring for 99% of the match, only for him to get the hot tag, lock in a couple of Masterlocks then lose to a Backstabber while being distracted.
That was your last match of 2009 folks, a distinctly average tag match on a card with one decent encounter and another two throw away bouts.
That pretty much sums up the year in terms of WWE actually, the occasional touch of brilliance sprinkled in amongst the mediocraty.
Anyway, I’m off to ring in the new year before I get too philosophical.
Enjoy yourselves guys!
Carlito & Jack Swagger win by Pinfall.
