The Superstars Recap – 17th September 2009
17/09/2009
Hello and welcome the all new Superstars Recap.
After getting some pretty good feedback we’ve stuck with the new Weekly Rundown layout for now.
We’d still love to know what you think about the changes so please feel free to get in touch via the Contact Us page, or any of the usual email addresses.
(By the way, the banners are purely temporary. We kind of rushed this idea through at the last minute and didn’t have time to get anything a bit better made.)
On with the show!

Opening Match: Chris Masters Vs. Santino Marella
Match 2: Christian Vs. Paul Burchill

The Superstars Recap
Opening Match
Singles Match
Chris Masters
Vs.
Santino Marella
Remember when Santino wasn’t a joke?
The crowd seem to absolutely love him, yet week in and week out he’s either involved in some dopey segment with the guest host or getting beaten by someone deemed more worthy of a push; case in point Chris Masters.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Masters and he’s seems much improved since he returned, but the company has jobbers already so I don’t get why they have to drag Santino down on almost a weekly basis.
Santino actually put up more of a fight in this one than I expected, doing the whole hulking up bit and mounting some nice offence. However he eventually lost the match to the dreaded Full Nelson… sorry, Masterlock, which he had initially tried to lock on himself.
Santino never actually tapped out, so I guess this one has to go down as a TKO.
Chris Masters wins by Technical Knock Out.
Segment 1
Ask The Divas
This week’s questions were ‘Have you ever been on a bad date and what happened’ and ‘Do you have any hidden talents?’
The most interesting of the responses were that Beth Phoenix once went out with a guy who lied about his age and turned out to be 30 (but failed to tell us how old she was at the time, so the story lost some of it’s impact) and that Gail Kim is an amazing cook.
Match 2
Singles Match
Christian
Vs.
Paul Burchill
Zack Ryder joined the commentary team at the start of this match, it’ll be interesting to see how good he is on the microphone over a prolonged period of time, when he can’t just rely on his catchprhases.
As Christian entered Ryder claimed to be unimpressed, then backed up his statement by saying that he had taken him to the limit in the ring before and should take the title now he’s improved as a competitor.
Amongst other things Ryder:
-Gave a shout out to his ‘girl’
-Informed everyone he tans daily, sometimes double sessions
-Claimed Tiffany should have named him #1 contender outright
-Said Zack Ryder = Ratings
-Has Katie Lea Burchill’s number…
-…But won’t call her back because she’s ‘NHE’ (Not Hot Enough)
Meanwhile in the ring Burchill made this a tough battle for Christian, almost picking up the victory a couple of times but ultimately falling short and losing to the KillSwitch.
Both men looked very good but Burchill in particular stood out in this match.
He hit some offence I’ve rarely seen before and didn’t really put a foot wrong, if he can just brush up his promo delivery a little bit he could be one to watch.
I think I still prefer him as a pirate though.
Christian wins by Pinfall.
Segment 2
Randy Orton Interviewed
After footage of Orton/Cena from Breaking Point and Orton/Batista from Raw, Josh Mathews asked the former WWE Champion about Batista.
Orton told him to forget Batista because he’s run away to Smackdown, then moved swiftly on to John Cena.
Orton said at Breaking Point he didn’t quit, but simply made a business decision to preserve the condition of his body, then guaranteed that Cena will be hurting worse than he is right now.
Orton wrapped it up by saying at Hell in a Cell, in a Hell in a Cell he will make Cena suffer and take back the title.
Main Event Match
Singles Match
Dolph Ziggler
Vs.
Finlay
Before this match J.R and Todd Grisham babbled on about different types of coffee, attempting to use it as a metaphor for the difference between these two Superstars.
Looking at them, you don’t really need a metaphor to see the differences.
Ziggler is an up and coming hot prospect, with (hopefully) a very successful career ahead of him.
Finlay is a veteran who in recent years has flip-flopped between being a sub-par heel and a sub-par face, often aligning himself with a 4ft ‘leprechaun’ that inexplicably has something like a 10-0 win streak over Chavo Guerrero.
Sure Finlay still has a great wrestling ability to fall back on, but he’s dull.
Sheamus is currently pulling off the fighting Irish gimmick with much more style, while Finlay trundles along, hitting people with his stick to get a pop from the crowd.
The guy is 51, and for a Superstar of that age he’s doing exceptionally well to be putting on matches of this quality, but I’m begging someone in the writing team to do something remotely interesting with him.
He’s 3rd generation, have him try and join Legacy or something, anything to make this talented guy interesting again.
Ziggler picked up the win by raking the eyes behind the referee’s back, then hitting his finisher which finally has a name!
Are you ready for this? A name that will surely strike fear into the hearts of his opponents….
THE ZIGZAG.
Seriously? They couldn’t come up with anything better than that? It sounds like a kid’s toy. Oh well, it got the job done here and kept Ziggler on a roll going into Smackdown.
Dolph Ziggler wins by Pinfall.
