The Superstars Recap
R.I.P Eddie ‘Umaga’ Fatu (March 28, 1973 – December 4, 2009)
Before I start the recap today, I’d just like to once again offer condolences from all the WWEBlog staff to the friends and family of Eddie “Umaga” Fatu, who sadly passed away on Friday the 4th December.
Eddie dedicated a large part of his life to wrestling and the WWE, finding niche’s first as one half of ‘3 Minute Warning’ and then even more so as The Samoan Bulldozer; Umaga.
Although he had parted company with the WWE recently, rumour has it that he was set for a comeback, and it’s a huge shame that this will now never happen.
Eddie leaves behind a loving family and friends, to whom our thoughts go out at this difficult time.
Opening Match
Tag Team Match
Legacy
Vs.
Evan Bourne & Primo
Evan Bourne and Primo? Seriously?
Well as much as I can’t see anything other than a Legacy victory here, I’ll give these two high flyers the benefit of the doubt.
Legacy seem to have been floating around without a real purpose since ending their feud with DX, and personally I’d like to see them used more effectively than the odd assist for Orton.
Sure let them keep helping their mentor, but I’d like to see them in a meaningful feud against a decent team as well, and I don’t think the slapdash union of Bourne and Primo are going to be the ones to fit the bill.
To cut a long story short, Bourne and Primo started strongly until Legacy began to isolate them and play all the usual heel cards.
Just as it looked like Bourne and Primo might pick up a victory in their début match, Cody Rhodes struck with the Cross Rhodes and picked up the predicted win.
Actually a really solid match that was given a huge chunk of the show to run.
I take back some of what I said, this was good stuff.
Legacy win by Pinfall.
Segment 1
Ask The Divas
Yes, it’s still going and no, it hasn’t got any better.
This week they were asked what is their favourite city to visit, and most said their home towns or New York.
Then they were asked if they had an escape plan for a bad date, the best plan is apparently to text a friend and get them to call you with an ‘emergency’.
So guys, if you’re ever out with a girl and they have to leave quickly because of an emergency phone call, ask some questions.
Match 2
Singles Match
The Hurricane
Vs.
Zack Ryder (w/ Rosa Mendes)
I’ve stopped paying attention to some parts of Superstars, in favour of preparing for a very special set of Christmas articles we have planned, but from the bits I did see this was another good outing for Ryder, slightly ruined by the ending of the match.
Just as The Hurricane began to battle back and looked to close in on a win, a ‘masked man’ that I’m 99% sure is Paul Burchill (you can never be 100% with the WWE) slid into the ring and hit a big Jackhammer, before leaving as mysteriously as he appeared.
Ah the old ‘get round being fired by wearing a costume’ gimmick. Revived a few months ago by The Miz, but last used by Hulk ‘Mr. America’ Hogan I believe.
The Hurricane wins by Disqualification.
Main Event Match
Singles Match
Matt Hardy
Vs.
Dolph Ziggler
I like both these guys, so hopefully this will be a decent match to wrap up this strong edition of Superstars.
As much as I like Matt, I think Ziggler NEEDS a win here to ’stop the rot’ as it were and get his career back on track.
Also, the fact that Matt got involved in C.M Punk’s business last week on Smackdown doesn’t bode well for the former multiple time tag team champion, as the Straight Edge superstar is known to hold a bit of a grudge.
Hardy started the match in control and looked to wrap up the victory early, but Ziggler showed experience beyond his years and scampered under the ropes and to the outside in order to create some seporation.
After the commercials the tides had turned (as they so often do) and Ziggler began to control the pace, locking on a selection of submissions that are fast becoming a staple of his matches.
Ziggler grabbed numerous near falls throughout this period, but again allowed Hardy back into the fight.
As the match reached it’s conclusion the result could have gone either way, with both men reversing the other’s finisher, but it was (thankfully) Ziggler who picked up the win with a cheeky backslide after the second Twist of Fate reversal.
I don’t know if Matt Striker just got confused or whether he actually let a morsel of information spill by accident, but after the bell he rambled on about how bad things were going for Matt, then claimed he was going to have a good new year.
I think he must have meant Ziggler was going to have a good new year, but I guess we’ll see.
A very good match to wrap up a very good episode of Superstars, I just wish it wasn’t so hit and miss all the time.
Dolp Ziggler wins by Pinfall.
