The Smackdown Summary
Opening Segment
Teddy Talks Titles
Before Smackdown kicked off properly a promo video played showing what had taken place at the end of the Fatal 4 Way at Bragging Rights between Batista and Rey Mysterio.
After the credits Teddy Long makes his way to the ring while Todd Grisham and Matt Striker talk about Smackdown now being the A show in the WWE.
Once in the ring Teddy begins by congratulating Smackdown on winning Bragging Rights, before swiftly moving on to the Mysterio/Batista situation.
He says that both the WWE Universe and Rey are looking for an explanation and later in the show the two of them will have a heart to heart conversation (yes he really did describe it exactly like that) to settle their differences.
With that addressed he began talking about Big Show’s #1 contendership status, but was quickly interrupted by Chris Jericho who is still carrying the Bragging Rights trophy.
Jericho begins to say something but Long stops him in his tracks and takes the trophy, claiming that it is the property of Smackdown. Jericho informs him that it is rightfully his trophy as he is the genius who single handedly masterminded it’s capture, which he did for himself, not for the brand or the fans.
After some more self-appreciation Jericho says that he should be the World Champion of Smackdown and is more deserving of the #1 contender spot.
Cue some big red pyro’s as The Big Red Machine; Kane decides it’s time to stake his claim in the title picture.
Kane disputes what Jericho has said, particularly the ‘single handed’ part of it, then claims that he is the most worthy #1 contender.
Jericho tells him that he got the pinfall and he should be thankful, then pointed out that Kane’s record against Taker is spotty at best.
Kane sets Jericho up for a Chokeslam but Teddy talks him out of delivering it. He then explains that the World Heavyweight Title match at Survivor Series is in fact going to be a Triple Threat match and the two of them will face off later tonight for the third spot.
Match 1
Singles Match
John Morrison
Vs.
Dolph Ziggler
It looks like now Bragging Rights is behind us, Ziggler has resumed his hunt for the Intercontinental Championship.
Before the match Ziggler criticises Morrison for being the only Smackdown Superstar to lose at Bragging Rights, but Morrison turns it around on him by pointing out he wasn’t even at Bragging Rights in the end.
Ziggler and Morrison have already had a couple of very impressive matches, and this one followed the trend.
Morrison started the match strongly but Ziggler was able to take control and slowed things down with a couple of grounding submission holds.
The action then began to go back and forth with a selection of strong offence and impressive counters.
Ziggler looked for the ZigZag to end the match but Morrison countered and hit the Flying Chuck, setting up for his high-flying finisher.
However, as Morrison began to climb the ropes for the Starship Pain, Ziggler rolled to the outside where he took advantage, slamming Morrison onto the announce table and picking up the win by count out.
Great stuff to start Smackdown.
Dolph Ziggler wins by Count-Out.
Segment 2
That Was Unexpected
Backstage Teddy Long is admiring the Bragging Rights trophy when Vince McMahon enters his office.
Vince congratulates Long and says that if he keeps up things he’ll be coming off probation soon.
C.M Punk enters and says he thinks that is a bad idea, stating his absence from the title picture as the reason and claiming if it wasn’t for Scott Armstrong’s shoddy officiating he’d already be there.
Vince agrees and says that he is going to give Punk exactly what he wants, then books him in a match against Scott Armstrong tonight.
Not quite what Punk was hoping for, but he looked pleased with the idea none the less.
Match 2
Divas Match
Beth Phoenix
Vs.
Jenny Brooks
Well this is a first for me; a Divas ‘local talent’ match.
Interestingly there is actually some background to this match.
Matt Striker explains that Phoenix had a very successful amateur career, but Jenny Brooks was the only blemish on her otherwise spotless record.
As you’d expect Phoenix completely squashed Brooks, beating her with a prolonged Glam Slam.
Beth Phoenix wins by Pinfall.
Match 3
Singles Match
Eric Escobar (w/Vickie Guerrero)
Vs.
Matt Hardy
Vickie Guerrero emerges in a halloween costume looking strangely reminiscent of Fiona from Shrek.
She declares that tonight she is to be known as ‘Princess’ Vickie Guerrero, then introduces her ‘Prince Charming’ Eric Escobar.
Hardy tweaked his knee in the early going and this instantly became a target for the impressive Escobar.
However, Matt picked up a shock win out of nowhere with a move that looked very similar to DDP’s Diamond Cutter, although I’m sure it was just meant to be a modified Twist of Fate.
That levels things up at 1 – 1 between these two and I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw part 3 sometime very soon.
Matt Hardy wins by Pinfall.
Segment 3
Why Batista, Why?
It’s time for us to find out why Batista destroyed Rey after the Fatal 4 Way at Bragging Rights.
I’d have thought it was pretty obvious, Rey cost him the match and he snapped.
Rey mopes down to the ring and talks about how what happened hurt him both mentally and physically. He says that he always considered Batista to be his best friend, and he still does.
He says that he and Batista are family and he owes his friend the benefit of the doubt, so calls out The Animal to talk about it like men and sort things out.
Batista emerges wearing shades (a sure sign that he is still a heel) and slowly walks down to the ring.
Once there he tells Mysterio that he just ‘doesn’t get it’ and says that he doesn’t realise just how bad it can get for him.
Batista says that he is going to be the bigger man and give Rey a chance to walk out of his ring, but Rey refuses and says he just wants to straighten everything out.
Rey says that he is prepared to let bygones be bygones because that is how much their friendship means to him.
Batista continues to heel it up, saying that Mysterio has used him as a bodyguard for the last time and that he shouldn’t have stabbed him in the back.
Rey says that if he’d have realised being in the Fatal 4 Way was going to ruin their friendship, he never would have accepted the place in it, but Batista once again tells him to leave the ring.
For the second time Rey refuses to leave and says that he isn’t leaving until they straighten things out.
Rey begins talking about all they have been through in the past and mentions Eddie.
Batista tells Rey that Eddie is dead (drawing huge boos from the crowd) and that he’s not thinking about them any more, he’s thinking about himself.
Segment 4
Brotherly Love
Backstage Matt Hardy catches up with Batista and says that if anyone knows about brothers who have conflicts, it’s him.
He says that he did a lot to Jeff that he wishes he could take back, then implores Batista not to make the same mistakes he did.
Batista laughs and walks into his dressing room, before emerging again and jumping Matt from behind, slamming him into a wall.
Match 4
Singles Match
Drew McIntyre
Vs.
Finlay
Before the match McIntyre says he wasn’t really interested in being on Team Smackdown as he plans on making an impact in his own way.
As Finlay tries to enter the ring McIntyre knocks him from the apron and drives him into the steel steps, before brutally beating him to the point where the match was called off.
As McIntyre walked up the ramp with a smirk on his face, a member of the crowd shouted ‘Speak English next time!’, which I found rather comical given that McIntyre probably speaks better English than 60% of the roster and 90% of the attending audience.
Match ends in a No Contest.
Segment 5
Cryme Tyme’s Diva Costume Contest
Speaking of bastardisation of the English language, here’s Cryme Tyme.
It’s nice to see Shad back to full fitness, although if the WWEBlog Informant is to be believed there wasn’t much wrong with him in the first place, which you can read about here.
Anyway, Cryme Tyme introduce Natalya as a Matador, Layla as Michael Jackson, Michelle McCool as The Devil and Mickey James as Electra.
Mickey James was declared the winner and as usual with Diva competitions a brawl broke out.
Match 5
Singles Match
C.M Punk
Vs.
Scott Armstrong
You’d think in an attempt to prevent confusion the creative team would have had Armstrong wear something other than his referee attire, but no.
Punk got in Armstrong’s face from the opening bell, shouting abuse and blaming him for what happened last week.
Armstrong briefly took control after getting slapped, hulking up and delivering three big shots to the former World Heavyweight Champ, but Punk picked up the win with a GTS.
There’s 2 minutes of my life I’m never getting back.
C.M Punk wins by Pinfall.
Main Event Match
World Heavyweight Championship Qualifying Match
Chris Jericho
Vs.
Kane
Main event time already? Tonight’s show has just flown by.
I’m glad this match didn’t take place at a Pay Per View, because I’d have hated having to try and predict an outcome.
On the one hand Jericho and Big Show’s status as a tag team seems to be gradually disintegrating, and a triple threat match would be a great opportunity for that situation to be furthered one way or another, but on the other hand Kane has been underused for such a long time and is more than overdue a shot at the gold.
I didn’t expect much from this match when it was announced, but I have to admit it was a very good main event bout.
Both men had chances to pick up the win, but it was Jericho who finally grabbed a pinfall after a second CodeBreaker that put The Big Red Machine away.
I’m not sure if this was the right outcome, for me at least.
Jericho is very versatile and could have easily feuded with any number of people while Show has a title shot against The Undertaker.
Kane on the other hand doesn’t really have much else going on and I wouldn’t be surprised if this loss doesn’t lead to him dropping off the radar for a few weeks, if not longer.
Chris Jericho wins by Pinfall.
