    The Smackdown Summary

Hello everyone, now before we get started I hope everyone had a great Mayday Bank Holiday!

We at WWEBlog did, and that’s why The Smackdown Summary is a tad late this week, but then we figured after such a hectic week with Extreme Rules and the 2010 Draft we deserved a little break.

We’d like to take this opportunity to remind you all that we’re still looking for results writers for all four shows! So if you have access to the shows fairly quickly after they air and would like to cover some of them let us know!

    Segment 1

    Kingston’s in Town

The show starts this week with a rather cheerful Teddy Long, who claims that Smackdown got the better of the 2010 Draft (although I’d beg to differ.)

He introduces Kofi Kingston who sets off his pyros and hits the ring for the first match of the night.

    Match 1

    Singles Match
    Kofi Kingston
    Vs.
    Chris Jericho

Already, just minutes into the show the draft is completely pointless.

Surely the draft on Monday should have been a definitive cut-off point, but no, Jericho is here on Smackdown for one last time.

Jericho tells the crowd that 12 months ago he told them he’d be the ‘Face of Smackdown’, and that’s exactly what he became.

He tells them that although they’ll find it hard to cope with the gaping hole he leaves on the Blue brand, it’s time for them to move on and grow up.

Kingston snatches the microphone and tells Jericho to shut up, informing him that if he doesn’t know how to it he’ll gladly do it for him.

Guess what? Matt Striker’s got first hand experience of fighting Kofi Kingston, and he’s not afraid to tell us about it.

Each and every week Striker tells us how he’s battled against so and so, or tasted someone else’s finisher and although it’s probably true, it’s really starting to grate on me now.

This match was your classic back and forth affair. Both men had chances to win and Jericho looked like he’d pulled it off definitively when he landed a huge CodeBreaker, but Kingston bounced backwards and to the outside.

By the time he’d dragged him back in the ring, the referee could only count to 2 before Kofi popped his shoulder up, frustrating Raw’s biggest draft acquisition.

Seconds later Kingston dragged himself to his feet and landed the Trouble in Paradise for his first victory on Smackdown.

    Kofi Kingston wins by Pinfall.

    Segment 2

    Swagger Fact

This was an odd one to say the least.

Jack Swagger appeared from backstage and informed everyone that after winning the 2002 Rose Bowl he received a personal invitation to The White House by ‘the greatest president in US history; George W. Bush’.

    His words, not mine.

    Segment 3

    Cold Blooded

Backstage Jericho tells a mystery man that he could have done with his help at ringside tonight, and that he should have stayed on Raw because they could have done well together.

When there is no response Jericho demands to know if the other person heard him.

Suddenly a huge fist flies into shot and knocks Jericho out cold. The camera pans out to reveal Big Show, who tells Jericho he heard him loud and clear.

    Segment 4

    Welcome Back Chavo

Before the match Chavo grabbed a microphone and told everyone that he was back on Smackdown and no longer under the thumb of the Raw guest hosts.

He says it feels good to be back, then talks about how the possibilities are endless now he and his Aunt Vickie are now on the same show.

Chavo tells the crowd to put their hands together for him, but before he can finish Kane hits the ring.

After delivering a huge Chokeslam Kane welcomes Chavo back to Smackdown and sets off his pyros, before heading up the ramp, his business taken care of.

    Segment 5

    Shad’s Time

From the backsage area Shad Gaspard delivered yet another ‘My Time’ promo.

He warned all the Superstars that have jumped from Raw to Smackdown that they better not have come to the Blue brand thinking it was their time, because it’s his.

    Match 2

    Singles Match
    John Morrison
    Vs.
    Cody Rhodes

Interestingly Matt Striker keeps saying that ‘Over the Edge’, the WWE’s next ‘new’ PPV is a unique concept. However, he never actually explains what this new and exciting concept is.

So, I decided to do some digging, but it appears even the WWE aren’t quite sure what’s so ‘unique’ about Over the Limit either, as there is no mention of any ground-breaking differences on their website.

I did find one place that suggested each match would have an official time limit, so if this is true Over The Limit’s gimmick appears to be that it’s from the 1980′s, when matches actually stuck to the allotted time limits set.

Anyway, in this match my personal pick of the 2010 Draft; Cody Rhodes, put in a good showing against the ever-enjoyable John Morrison.

Rhodes looked to be out of it when he got drilled with a Pele Kick, but the son of the American Dream hit back almost instantly with the Cross-Rhodes to score a 1..2..3.

    Cody Rhodes wins by Pinfall.

    Segment 6

    Swagger Fact

Yeah, it’s another one of these.

This time Swagger talked about how he led the Oklahoma Wrestling team to three consecutive national championships.

    Segment 7

    Edge’s Farewell Address

The crowd, clearly still unsure as to what side of the fence Edge has fallen on after attacking Orton in the main event of Raw, cheered The Rated R Superstar as he made his way to the ring.

He started by saying that he really didn’t want to go to Raw because he’s always felt like Smackdown was HIS show, and the crowd have always been so supportive of him that they feel like family.

He thanks the crowd for all their support but just as it looks like he’s about to leave Christian’s music hits.

I’ve been waiting for this moment for the best part of a year or more, so I’m a little sad that the draft has once again placed them on different brands and this will be a one off.

Edge tells Christian he knows why he’s out here, but before he gets to it he wants a moment to reflect on all the things they did as a team.

He tells Christian that before he wishes him luck on Raw, he wants him to know that he’s his best friend and because of that he wants to wish him well on Smackdown too.

Christian says that for the people who don’t know about their storied history, he’s going to paint them a little picture.

He talks about how they grew up together, broke into the business together, travelled the world together and became 7-time Tag Team Champions together.

He says that because of all that he knows Edge better than anyone, possibly even better than himself, which is why he knows that every single word that came out of his mouth before he came out here was a load of crap.

Edge asks where all this is coming from and Christian tells him that while the WWE Universe truly respected Edge for coming back from numerous injuries, he never really respected them back and did what he always does, used them to get what he wanted.

Edge says that this is clearly all about Christian’s insecurities, because he is a 9-time World Champion and his brother has yet to claim World Heavyweight gold (other than ECW, which apparently doesn’t count.)

Christian says that while he hasn’t won World Title gold yet, he will do, and when he does it’ll be on his own merits, not by stepping on other people’s necks.

Christian calls Edge out as a liar and after a few moments The Rated R Superstar admits it, saying he’d played the Smackdown crowds for the last few months, making them dance like puppets and say ‘Spear’ whenever he liked.

Christian says that since he’s been back everyone has been asking him when E & C are going to get back together, but after all this time he’s realised that Edge used him too to get to the top.

He says that when he first came back he thought there was a possibility, but now he’d rather see E Vs. C… tonight!

The pair square off while Matt Striker describes this as ’10 years in the making between two former best friends’ (I guess we’re forgetting that they are meant to be brothers now.)

Just as it looks like they might go at it Edge tells Christian that he won’t fight him, but then delivered a cheap shot.

The two brawled around and Christian almost hit the KillSwitch, but Edge escaped up the ramp while Christian led the crowd in the usual ‘Goodbye’ chant.

    Segment 8

    Edge Interviewed

After the commercials Josh Mathews caught up with Edge backstage and asked him if he thought we’d ever see him take on Christian.

Edge tells him that he doesn’t think Christian would really like to see that match take place, because it wouldn’t turn out too well for him.

The Big Show appears from behind him and tells Edge that it’s too bad that match isn’t going to take place, and it’s also a shame they won’t get to fight either.

As Edge turns to walk away Show drops him with the Knockout Punch.

It seems the Giant is on a mission.

    Match 3

    Divas Tag Team Match
    Lay-Cool (w/Vickie Guerrero)
    Vs.
    Beth Phoenix & Kelly Kelly

Oh joy, Lay-Cool have Kelly Kelly themed t-shirts tonight.

I’m not going to go into great detail here, but the basics are that Kelly got dropped by Vickie on the outside early on and never really recovered, eventually tagging in Beth who destroyed Lay-Cool before returning the tag to let the new girl pick up the pinfall.

Beth Phoenix & Kelly Kelly win by Pinfall.

    Segment 9

    Swagger Fact

Man, these are getting old fast.

This time Swagger talked about how he turned down numerous full scholarships from some of the top Universities in the country.

    Segment 10

    Masters Goes Viral

Chris Masters appears on the Titantron and talks about how certain things can go viral on the internet these days, before doing his pec dance.

I’m not sure what’s going on either.

    Segment 11

    Leprechaun Heaven

Dolph Ziggler hits the ring next (man are there a lot of segments on tonight’s Smackdown!) and tells everyone that on Raw he had one of the proudest moments of his career to date.

After showing clips of him choking out Hornswoggle with the deadly Sleeper hold, he tells the crowd that as a result the little guy is now in ‘Leprechaun Heaven’.

    Segment 12

    Matt Hardy Interviewed

    Good god there’s more!

After clips of Drew McIntyre’s heinous assault last week Josh Mathews asks Matt Hardy about the state of his career and of his health.

Hardy says that he’s suffered a lot of injuries during his career, but nothing like what he went through last week.

He says that what McIntyre did took it’s toll, but he’s going to come back again stronger than ever.

McIntyre then shows up and blasts Hardy, before hitting him with a big Future Shock on the concrete.

    Segment 13

    JTG Going for Gold

    And it goes on!

Backstage JTG talks about how he’s going it alone now and has set his sights on some gold, presumably the Intercontinental Championship.

He did some sort of schizophrenic thing though, where he asked himself questions then answered them.

    Segment 14

    C.M Punk’d

This is getting ridiculous now. 14 Segments and counting in 1 show?!

Anyway, the Straight Edge Society hit the ring and C.M Punk began talking about how he beat Rey at Extreme Rules and preserved his ‘sign of purity’; his hair.

Punk claimed that he did it single handedly then began delivering one of his preachy messages, until M.V.P’s music hit.

M.V.P called the S.E.S boring (bit of a Pot and Kettle situation if you ask me) and reminisced about when he used to be on Smackdown and things were fun.

He eventually attacked Punk and Co, getting some back up from Rey Mysterio leading to the next match.

    Main Event Match

    Tag Team Match
    The Straight Edge Society (w/Serena)
    Vs.
    M.V.P & Rey Mysterio

Quite a quick début match for M.V.P.

At the climax M.V.P set Gallows up for the 619, then hit ‘The 305′ (according to Todd Grisham) to pick up the win.

Coincidentally, the 305 looks a lot like PayDirt, but I suppose that’s ok with Shelton out of the picture.

After the match the hooded figure that looked an awful lot like Skip Sheffield at Extreme Rules hit the ring and drilled Rey Mysterio with a Spin-Out Neckbreaker.

I hope it isn’t Sheffield after all this, I’d much rather see someone new, but I guess we’ll find out eventually.

M.V.P & Rey Mysterio win by Pinfall.

    Closing Segment

    Swagger Facts

Enough already! I don’t think I can take much more!

This time Swagger talked about how he graduated with honours and a perfect 4.0 GPA from the University of Oklahoma, where he gave the Keynote address at the 2010 commencement Ceremony.

After the commercials Swagger made his way to the ring and tried his best to speak while deafening boos echoed around the arena.

After waiting for a good few minutes for the booing to die down Swagger decided to just talk anyway.

He continued with his reel of accolades (none of which I can be bothered to list here) then listed the World Heavyweight Championship win as the highest of the lot.

He told some story about his dad, but I didn’t really follow it.

Swagger promised the crowd that he would be the World Heavyweight Champion until he retires, but his speech got cut short by Teddy Long.

Teddy said everyone had heard just about enough from Jack, so it’s time for the introduction of the new #1 Contender for the World Heavyweight Championship…

    The Big Show!

Show strides out onto the ramp and the crowd go crazy, it looks like he’s an instant face.

Show tells the crowd to give Swagger a ‘little golf clap’ for all his achievements, then tells his own anecdote about how the doctors couldn’t believe his size when he was born.

Show says that as good as Swagger is, he isn’t the World’s Biggest Athlete and there just seems to be one thing he needs to add to his resume; Early Retirement.

Show hit his 3rd Knockout Punch of the night, leaving Swagger on the canvas as the show went off the air.
