The Smackdown Summary
Opening Segment
Card is Subject to Change
Tonight’s Smackdown is a little like an extension of the Rumble PPV, with two title matches on tonight’s card.
The first one, which I expected to be main event, seems to be opening the show here.
Just as DX began to deliver their opening address, Rey Mysterio’s music hit and the #1 contender for the World Heavyweight Championship made his way rather sombrely to the ring.
Once there he focused on Shawn Michaels. He says that he has a lot of respect for HBK, but he doesn’t feel like he’s getting any back, because every time he’s seen him speak on Raw, it’s been about how he’s going to win the Rumble and head to Mania to fight Taker for the title.
He asks Shawn if he just expects Taker to beat him at The Rumble and Shawn tells him that’s exactly what he thinks, but more importantly why is he out here just minutes before their title defence, getting up in his face.
Triple H steps in, seemingly to calm the situation down, but then tells Mysterio if he’s out here for a fight he’s out of luck, because they didn’t bring Hornswoggle with them.
Rey says if they want to hear something funny he’s going to do something Sunday both of them have failed to do at WrestleMania, and that’s beat The Undertaker.
Threats are thrown back and forth until C.M Punk’s music hits the speakers, and the Straight Edge Society emerge, all three of them.
Yeah, that’s right Serena, the girl who’s head they shaved bald last week is now an actual member of the faction by the looks of things.
On his way down the ramp Punk suggests that Mysterio must be high on some sort of illegal pharmaceutical substance (probably true given his current injury situation) and rather than paying attention to what happens on Raw, he should pay more attention to what happens on Smackdown, because they are going to become the first Straight Edge tag champs tonight.
Triple H butts in eventually and says that while he’s happy to hear that they are ‘Straight’, he doesn’t think anyone really gives a crap about them not drinking.
He says he doesn’t get it, because he doesn’t smoke, drink or do drugs either, but he also doesn’t look like he’s just gone on a week long crack binge with Amy Winehouse.
The Game tells Punk to smarten himself up, claiming that either he, ‘lobotomy man’ or ‘Britney Spears’ needs a shower.
Teddy Long is next to crowd the ringside area, emerging to explain that things aren’t going to go down like this.
He says that seeing as oppertunity has knocked, The Straight Edge Society won’t be getting their tag title shot tonight, because instead Mysterio will go 1 on 1 with HBK and Punk will take on The Game right now.
Match 1
Singles Match
Triple H
Vs.
C.M Punk (w/ The Straight Edge Society)
Why does Rey Mysterio have to ruin everything?
I was quite looking forward to the tag title match tonight, and as good as I’m sure this match and Rey Vs. HBK will be, I wanted to see gold on the line!
Triple H apparently sent HBK to the back for this match, which while gallant, might come back to bite The Game, especially with Gallows and Serena hanging around at ringside.
I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before, but I used to totally hate C.M Punk as a good guy.
He had no edge, no bite, no personality.
Now, as the ‘Straight Edge Saviour’ I really look forward to seeing his stuff each week and actually found myself rooting for him a little bit in this one.
However, as The Game pulled out some ‘Vintage Ric Flair’ with a Figure Four, assisted by grabbing the ropes behind the officials back, I couldn’t help but be swayed back into Triple H’s corner.
Just as it looked like Punk might tap Serena attempted to get into the ring, distracting the ref long enough for Gallows to deliver some damage.
Triple H managed once again to grab the upper hand though, and set Punk up for a Pedigree.
Serena once again entered the fray, costing her leader the match but sparing him any more punishment.
After the bell all 3 members of The Straight Edge Society wore The Game down, then looked like they were planning on shaving his head.
Shawn Michaels hit the ring just in the nick of time and saved his partner, before setting his sights on Punk, who rather chivalrously used Serena as a shield while he escaped the ring.
Triple H wins by Disqualification.
Match 2
Singles Match
Chris Jericho
Vs.
R-Truth
Yawn.
If ever Jericho needed to use every ounce of his skill to make a match look good, it’s this one.
Next to no build up, an opponent who has flip-flopped between un-interesting rivalries for the best part of a year and right after a great opener.
Jericho did indeed make this match better than I expected it to be, which made it all the more disappointing when he lost.
Jericho went for the CodeBreaker, but Truth held onto the ropes then rolled his rival up for the 1..2..3.
How do you go from one half of a superb Tag Team, to this?
R-Truth wins by Pinfall.
Match 3
No Disqualification Intercontinental Championship Match
John Morrison
Vs.
Drew McIntyre (c)
Before the match Morrison calls McIntyre a corporate Champion and questions whether he really knows what the Intercontinental Championship really means.
He explains how just minutes after winning the title McIntyre threw it on the floor to celebrate with his backstage pal Sheamus.
Morrison says that McIntyre doesn’t feel like he has to play by the same rules as everyone else, but tonight there are no rules and he’s going to reclaim his gold.
While McIntyre made his way to the ring the commentary team debated whether the No DQ rule favoured him or not, with the argument being that he’s defended his title a few times by way of disqualification, but now he can use weapons and illegal moves without having to worry.
McIntyre did indeed use the lack rules to his advantage first, grabbing a kendo stick from under the ring before driving it into Morrisons ribs and across his back.
Morrison turned the momentum at which point McIntyre snatched his IC title from ringside and looked like ‘taking his ball and going home’.
Morrison cut him off but the change in pace seemed to work against him and it wasn’t long before he was on the back foot once more.
After a back and forth stint outside the ring and in the crowd Morrison came close to picking up the title back inside the ropes, but McIntyre got the knees up for the Starship Pain and hit the ‘Future Shock’ (his DDT) onto the Intercontinental Championship belt to retain the gold.
The momentum swung so many times that it was hard to keep up at some points, but both men gave it their all in a fantastic performance and the ending was, well… sweet.
McIntyre’s star is certainly rising.
Main event calibre match.
This would have made the Rumble PPV if I was on the booking team, bumping the Womens Championship match.
Drew McIntyre retains the Intercontinental Championship by Pinfall.
Segment 2
Impromptu Championship Match
Speaking of the Womens Championship, here’s the Womens Champion; Michelle McCool.
She claims that Mickie James has been ’sent back to the barnyard’ and won’t appear on Smackdown again… ever.
After clips of the segment from last week Michelle says it sucks that she doesn’t get to fight at The Rumble now, but as she’s a fighting champion if anyone in the Divas locker room thinks they can take her title, they should come to the ring and they’ll fight for the strap right now.
Cue Mickie James’ music.
Michelle looks worried but I have a feeling Layla’s absence might have a part to play in this.
Well call me a psychic cause Layla emerges in a fat suit, with a pig nose on and a donut in hand.
As the completely distasteful segment rumbled along, the crowd began to show their distaste with shouts of ‘boring’ and general booing.
The bell sounds for this ‘match’ and to cut a long story short Michelle picked up the ‘win’, if you can call it that.
Matt Striker seemed to absolutely love this segment, to the point that he was laughing and screaming like a little girl.
I wonder how he can look at himself in the mirror.
Segment 3
Batista’s Warning
Backstage HBK is making his way to the ring when Batista stops him in his tracks.
Batista tells Shawn he couldn’t care less about his rivalry with Taker, but he should keep out of his way at The Rumble.
Michaels tells Batista that he always thought he was over-rated and Batista says that maybe he should…
Just as things got to breaking point Triple H appears and asks Batista what he’s going to do.
HBK exits, then Batista follows shortly after, not saying a word to The Game.
Main Event Match
Singles Match
Rey Mysterio
Vs.
Shawn Michaels
I don’t like much about Rey Mysterio, but I’ll say one thing for him. When it comes down to ‘blockbuster’ matches like this, he always seems to deliver the goods.
Michaels seemed to have a new level of aggression in this match.
Maybe I’ve seen too many DX’ified matches recently, but since this new ‘fun loving’ non-rebellious DX formed Michaels role seems to be taking a beating before bringing Triple H in to turn things around.
However, here he seemed to have a renewed purpose and spent much more of the match battling rather than getting beaten down.
Mysterio took a hard knock to his knee, coming from the top turnbuckle, which could change the whole face of his match at the Rumble if it has done legitimate damage.
That being said his knee might be the last of Mysterio’s worries after the climax of this match.
After landing the 619, Mysterio went for the West Coast Pop only to be caught with the most brutal Sweet Chin Music I’ve ever seen.
You’ve heard the commentary team say that it looked like it took someone’s head off before? Well this was probably one of the best examples of that you’ll ever see.
Just as HBK went to make the cover Batista hit the ring and began to destroy both men, until Triple H sprinted to the ring.
The two brawled back and forth, with The Game getting the upper hand before dumping The Animal over the top rope along with himself.
Just when it looked like things couldn’t get any more extraordinary, the lights dropped, the gong sounded and Taker appeared in the ring to deliver a stereo Chokeslam to Rey and HBK to wrap up the show.
Shawn Michaels wins by Disqualification.
