The Smackdown Summary
Segment 1
Fatal 4 Weeks
Teddy Long hits the ring first this week, with full intent on discussing Fatal 4 Way (which is in 4 weeks time.)
Teddy says that The Big Show is already in the title match along with the man that cheated him out of the title at Over the Limit; Jack Swagger.
The other two participants will be decided tonight when Kane takes on C.M Punk and Rey Mysterio takes on The Undertaker, who returns tonight.
As Teddy continues to ramble about Fatal 4 Way, Drew McIntyre’s music interrupts and the former Intercontinental Champion makes his way to the ring… hmm, I wonder what he might want.
Once in the ring McIntyre announced that right now he should still be IC Champion, and that Teddy knows as well as he does that the match against Kofi Kingston should have been stopped because his arm was lacerated.
He tells Long that if he can’t do his job properly, he’ll have to do it for him.
Teddy tells him that losing his match doesn’t give him the right to trash his office, or come out to the ring and interrupt.
He asks McIntyre who he thinks he is, and gets a reply of ‘The Chosen One’.
McIntyre presents Long another letter from Mr. McMahon, and tells him that he has to read it out loud.
Teddy reads the letter, which basically says Matt Hardy is suspended because of his attack on McIntyre at OTL.
I know, I know, you’re all thinking the same as me… What about Justin Gabriel?!
McIntyre warns Long not to cross him again, because if he does the next letter will be informing him of his termination as General Manager.
As Teddy leaves the ring Matt Hardy’s music hits and he attempts to make his way to the ring, only to be stopped by Teddy Long and a selection of security guards.
McIntyre gets the ‘You Suck’ treatment as the show went to commercials.
Match 1
Tag Team Match
Drew McIntyre & Jack Swagger
Vs.
Kofi Kingston & The Big Show
Swagger makes his way to the ring after the break and repeatedly introduces himself as ‘STILL World Heavyweight Champion’, much to the dislike of the attending audience.
Two PPV matches thrown together to open Smackdown? Wow, tonight’s Double Main Event for Fatal 4 Way qualification really must be something special!
As I mentioned, I’m currently in the grasp of a rather persistent bout of Man-Flu, so I’ll probably be rushing through tonight’s Smackdown as I feel close to collapsing.
The end of the match saw Drew McIntyre suffer the full rage of The Big Show, lamping him with a Knockout Punch while Jack Swagger watched on from the outside, making no effort to try and save his partner.
Kofi Kingston & The Big Show win by Pinfall.
Segment 2
Straight Edge Apprehension
Backstage, hiding under a veil made out of a towel C.M Punk asked his followers if they thought his new look looked good.
Gallows and Serena both told him that he looked fine, but he said that he didn’t want to go to the ring as the crowd would mock him.
After a few minutes of ass kissing from the other members of the Society, Punk decided that as he was a stronger person than those in attendance tonight, he WOULD go to the ring and reveal himself to the world.
Segment 3
Vickie Ziggler?
Elsewhere backstage official Smackdown consultant Vickie Guererro is speaking to Vance Archer and Curt Hawkins.
She reminds them that they only have 15 more days to make an impact, before kicking them out of her office.
Dolph Ziggler is next to enter, and Vickie thanks him for sticking up for her last week, and he’s proved that chivalry is not dead.
No, no, no, no, no, no, please for the love of god, NO!
If they tie Dolph together with Vickie they may as well fire him right now. On the spot.
Vickie tells Dolph that as she owes him a favour he is in a great position, something that seems to win him over.
She tells him that she’s booked him in a match tonight with Chavo, against Christian and Hornswoggle.
More ritual humiliation for Chavo too then it seems.
Segment 4
Lucha Punk
After milking the ‘big reveal’ for all it was worth, Punk finally whipped the towel off his head to reveal… a lucha mask emblazoned with S.E.S logos.
Didn’t see that one coming…
Match 2
Fatal 4 Way Qualifier Match
C.M Punk (w/The S.E.S)
Vs.
Kane
If you want a basic summary of this match, head into the WWEBlog archive and look at some of the Mysterio/Kane matches, then flip the heel/face roles.
Kane continually tried to rip Punk’s mask off and ultimately lost the match because he became too obsessed with it and got booted in the face by Luke Gallows.
Punk ‘hit’ the GTS and qualified for Fatal 4 Way.
I say ‘hit’ because it was one of the biggest botches I’ve ever seen, and the crowd were audibly upset that it actually got the 3.
After the match Matt Striker did one of those fantastic ‘cover up’ jobs, claiming that it’s the knee that does the damage in the GTS and as long as that connects it’s all that matters.
C.M Punk wins by Pinfall and qualifies for the World Heavyweight Championship Match at Fatal 4 Way.
Match 3
Tag Team Match
Christian & Hornswoggle
Vs.
Dolph Ziggler & Chavo Guerrero (w/Vickie Guerrero)
I decided I wouldn’t pass comment on this match until I’d seen it from start to finish, just in case the creative team decided to surprise me.
Sadly they didn’t and Christian picked up the 3 with a KillSwitch on Chavo.
I suppose in some ways it was a little surprising, as Hornswoggle didn’t get the pinfall and he actually did take a bit of a beating.
After the bell Ziggler locked a brutal Sleeper on Christian and choked him out completely.
How is Ziggler not a champion? Anyone that can make a basic, run of the mill Sleeper look damn good in this day and age really should have some gold.
Christian and Hornswoggle win by Pinfall.
Segment 5
Lay-Cool Interviewed
Josh Mathews introduced the ‘Co-Womens Champion’ Lay-Cool, who almost immediately dismissed Josh and began giving a ‘history’ lesson.
Michelle explains that the Womens Championship has been around for the longest of all the titles in the WWE, the pair thank Vickie for her involvement and explain why there is now 2 titles rather than 1 (‘it was a handicap match, stupid’.)
They claim the WWE Universe are jealous of them and the quite frankly awful segment comes to a close.
I guess whoever came up with the Lay-Cool gimmick had been watching a little too much Recess.
Match 4
Singles Match
Luke Gallows (w/Serena)
Vs.
M.V.P
I still don’t get why M.V.P gets such a pop from the crowds.
I like him as a person (really nice guy, and he supports Manchester United) and I like his delivery and wrestling skills, but he hasn’t had a decent angle in years.
Literally the last big storyline he had was when he had apparently lost all his money, and even that petered out without so much as a mention after a few weeks.
Some would argue that Gallows hasn’t had ANY real storyline since he started, but the way I see it, as soon as you’re in an interesting faction, you’ve got an angle.
M.V.P lost this match after falling victim to the S.E.S masked man, who DDT’d him on the apron and allowed Gallows to pick up the pieces and the 1..2..3.
Luke Gallows wins by Pinfall.
Main Event Match
Fatal 4 Way Qualifier Match
Rey Mysterio
Vs.
The Undertaker
That’s right guys, Taker’s back!
Well, for a little bit at least, I guess the outcome of this match will determine how long he hangs around for this time.
The thing I like most about Taker is, he might be carrying god knows how many long-term injuries, but when he’s in the ring, he never shows it, and if he does show it, he drags you that far into the spectacle that you don’t notice it.
At no point in this match (other than when Striker tried one of his ‘cover ups’) did I think ‘Taker’s past it now’.
In fact, he looked as good as he did over 10 years ago when I first saw him live. He isn’t as good (who would be after the years he’s put in) but he makes what he does LOOK as good, and that’s what matters.
Taker spent a lot of this match in control, so when Mysterio started to battle back and hit 619 I thought I knew what to expect.
However, The Deadman came through it and landed a Tombstone to put the cat amongst the pigeons (or rather The Deadman amongst the Title picture) in a great main event.
The Undertaker wins by Pinfall and qualifies for the World Heavyweight Championship Match at Fatal 4 Way.
