The Smackdown Summary
Segment 1
Your NEW World Heavyweight Champion
Once again Chris Jericho kicks off Smackdown, although this week with one slight change; the World Heavyweight Championship draped over his shoulder.
As he made his entrance a clip of his altercation with Edge on Raw played.
In a similar fashion to how he started his speech on Raw, Jericho bragged about being the new champ and said that after years of being unappreciated he’s finally where he belongs, at the top of the pile.
He says Monday was meant to be his party, the crowd’s chance to bask in his success and their opportunity to give him the respect he deserves, however it was all taken away by Edge and he didn’t deserve it.
Edge’s music hits and the Rated R Superstar joins the new champ in the ring.
After giving the crowd ample time to chant his name Edge tells Jericho that as much as he hates to do it, he had to come out here and congratulate him for coming through the Elimination Chamber as a winner.
Jericho makes out that it was academic because he’s the best in the world at what he does, but Edge argues that he’s better at being Speared by him.
Edge then lists all of Jericho’s achievements, followed by the word ‘Spear’, sometimes multiple times, inciting a ‘Spear, Spear, Spear’ chant from the crowd.
Edge says he has a feeling all those Spears are getting to him both mentally and physically, as he sees doubt in the champions eyes.
Edge questions whether Jericho thinks he can beat him, then tells him he wants to get his head in the game because he wants to beat him at his very best so there’s no excuses.
Jericho says Edge will never Spear him again, then hits catches him with a Right hand.
He sets up for the CodeBreaker but Edge avoids it and hits… you guessed it, a Spear.
Match 1
Money in the Bank Qualification Match
John Morrison
Vs.
Dolph Ziggler
Vs.
R-Truth (w/David Otunga)
As much as I’d love to see Ziggler pick up the win here, I can’t imagine Morrison or R-Truth having much to do if they didn’t make it into Money in the Bank.
That said, NXT will probably have a presence at Mania which R-Truth can get involved in, so I fully expect Morrison to win this one.
Morrison and R-Truth began this match working as a cohesive unit, attacking Ziggler who seemed much more interested in hanging around outside the ring.
Truth and Morrison battled it out between them, with Ziggler only venturing in the ring to break up pinfalls and keep the match going.
I’m still struggling to work out Otunga. He came across as a heel in his initial intro video and again in his first match, yet here he’s cheering on his 100% face mentor.
With Morrison incapacitated on the outside Ziggler locked on what is fast becoming his trademark Sleeper hold on R-Truth, who looked to be struggling.
Morrison eventually broke the hold, but Ziggler maintained control and almost scored a pinfall with a Fame-Asser and then a perfect Inverted Bodyslam.
I don’t get how this guy isn’t higher up the card when he can pull out quality like that.
Truth looked to hit Ziggler with the Lie Detector, but he ducked it expertly and allowed Morrison to take the impact.
Moments later all three men began to battle it out on the top rope and Ziggler came off worst, being thrown to the outside via the apron.
Morrison then hit the Starship Pain on Truth and looked to be closing in on the win.
However, Ziggler recovered and dragged Morrison from the pinning predicament, then covered Truth for himself, picking up the win and the spot at WrestleMania.
I have to say I didn’t expect this in the slightest, but I have to say the best man won in this match, he put on a fantastic performance.
Dolph Ziggler wins by Pinfall and qualifies for the Money in the Bank Match at WrestleMania XXVI.
Match 2
WWE Womens Championship Match
Michelle McCool (w/Layla)
Vs.
Mickie James (c)
Special Referee: Vickie Guerrero
If I had to sum up both this match, and the Womens Divison on Smackdown at the minute with just one word, I’d probably have to go with ‘Meh’.
It’s a shame too because they have some Divas with real quality (two of which are in this match), just nothing remotely interesting for them to do.
For the majority of this match either Layla or Vickie did their utmost to gift Michelle the win, from distractions to refusing to count when Mickie went for a cover.
Beth Phoenix was shown watching the match on a monitor in the back, although I’m not sure what that was there for.
Rather bizarrely as Michelle went for a cover Vickie tumbled between the ropes and ended up in a heap on the outside.
As Layla struggled to help her up Mickie rolled Michelle up in the ring.
Vickie eventually tottered back under the bottom rope, but instead of counting slapped the taste out of Mickie’s mouth.
This distraction allowed Michelle to strike with a big Kick, and cover for the 1..2..3.
Tony Chimmel got carried away announcing the victory, declaring Michelle the ‘NEW Heavyweight Womens Champion’, but she didn’t seem to mind as she celebrated with Layla and Vickie in the ring.
I don’t get why they bothered putting the belt on Mickie, she’s not even had it a month.
Michelle McCool wins by Pinfall and becomes the NEW Womens Champion.
Match 3
Money in the Bank Qualification Match
Kane
Vs.
Drew McIntyre
Before getting into the ring McIntyre decided it would be a good time to run his mouth.
He explained that he is undefeated and not even Kane has been able to beat him yet, then said that after he picks up the win tonight, he’s going to go on to win the Money in the Bank match and cash it in, fulfilling the prophecy at WrestleMania XXVI.
He said that he would then be the World Champion, Intercontinental Champion and crucially, would still be undefeated.
After an initial flurry of rage from Kane, McIntyre took control of the match and picked up a couple of near falls.
The momentum of the match swung back and forth a few more times before Kane picked up a somewhat unexpected victory after a kick to the head.
Not even a Big Boot, just a kick to the head as McIntyre lay on the canvas.
After the bell McIntyre paced around the ring while the crowd berated him with ‘You Suck chants’.
Eventually he took his IC title and began to go crazy around the announce desk, drawing yet more ire from the crowd.
Kane wins by Pinfall and qualifies for the Money in the Bank Match at WrestleMania XXVI.
Segment 2
Smackdown Gets AWESOME
For the first time in god knows how long The Miz is back on Smackdown.
He explains that the tag titles give himself and Big Show free reign to show up on any brand, so he’s come to Smackdown to find opponents for WrestleMania, as they’ve beaten the best Raw has to offer in Mark Henry and M.V.P.
He tells Teddy Long to find them some opponents for WrestleMania so he can beat them and have his WrestleMania moment, because he’s The Miz, and he’s AWESOME.
Teddy Long appears and says that if The Big Show had turned up they might have had a Tag Title match tonight, but seeing as it’s just The Miz he’ll book him into singles competition against Edge.
Another high profile match for The Miz!
Match 4
Money in the Bank Qualification Match
C.M Punk (w/The Straight Edge Society)
Vs.
Shelton Benjamin
Smackdown finally has a ECW free agent on it’s books!
Two Money in the Bank veterans battle it out here for a place in the match at WrestleMania, and I think my money would have to be on Benjamin.
While Punk has been given the nod on two occasions in the Money in the Bank, he never really pulled off the high flying, daredevil stuff that Shelton did on his way to not winning.
I also think that Punk is probably above the MITB match, and has a lot going on already with his Straight Edge Society, who would just be in the way at ringside come WrestleMania if he were to make it into this match.
My prediction started to look a little bleak as Luke Gallows looked to interject himself into the match, however a helping hand from scorned Rey Mysterio allowed Benjamin to hit the PayDirt and book his place at WrestleMania.
Shelton Benjamin wins by Pinfall and qualifies for the Money in the Bank Match at WrestleMania XXVI.
Main Event Match
Singles Match
Edge
Vs.
The Miz
I have to admit I spent more time watching this match than actually writing, partially down to my sound inexplicably dying for no apparent reason.
It was an interesting experience watching the match without Striker and Grisham harping on about WrestleMania over the top of it, some might describe it as refreshing.
Miz put up a very good challenge but eventually buckled after a Edgecution and a Spear.
Edge posed and pointed to the WrestleMania sign after the match, indicating I assume that he’s ready for whatever Chris Jericho has to offer.
Edge wins by Pinfall.
