    The Smackdown Summary

    Opening Segment

    Merry Christmas!

We’d like to start the Smackdown Summary by wishing all our readers a very Merry Christmas!

We hope Santa brought you exactly what you wanted in your Christmas Presents and that you had a great day!

Despite being aired on the most awkward day of the year, this Christmas edition of Smackdown looks like it could be a pretty good show.

Vickie Guerrero opens the show in a similar fashion to us, wishing all the viewers a very Merry Christmas from what appears to be her kitchen.

Teddy appears with a big bowl of Eggnog and after a glass each Vickie shows us how to make the ‘Perfect Christmas Meal’, including her famous Gurrero Christmas Stuffing which Teddy claimed looked like dog food.

As she goes to grab some cranberry sauce Hornswoggle sneaks in and ruins everything, tearing apart the turkey with his bare hands.

I hope this isn’t a sign of things to come, because this opening segment was awful.

    Match 1

    8 Man Tag Team Match
R-Truth, John Morrison, Finlay & Matt Hardy
    Vs.
Drew McIntyre, Dolph Ziggler C.M Punk & Luke Gallows

Merry Christmas indeed as we’re treated to a tweaked re-match from last week to open the show.

Dolph Ziggler and Finlay have been thrown into this match to change it from last week’s 5 man into an 8 man, and as much as I like the New-Age Mr. Perfect I doubt his inclusion is going to make this any more interesting, especially as he and Finlay aren’t really working anything at the minute.

My main issue with last week’s 6-Man was the way in which these multiple-rivalry matches dilute each person’s involvement, and as you’d expect throwing another 2 guys into the mix just added to this issue even more.

All three major feuds involved got a little ring time but made little progression, with Morrison scoring the victory not over his rival, but rather over current Smackdown whipping boy Dolph Ziggler.

R-Truth, John Morrison, Finlay & Matt Hardy win by Pinfall.

    Segment 2

    Making an Impact

Anyone care to guess what Jericho came to the ring to talk about?

Yup, DX. Or rather the general conspiracy in effect throughout the WWE to hold Jericho back.

After talking about how he and Show were never properly beaten in their re-match against DX, Jericho asked what The Hart Dynasty have ever done to earn a title shot, prompting the electric pink perils to make their way to the ring.

Jericho tells them to calm down as he respects where they came from, their families and Stu Hart’s dungeon, where he also trained as a young wrestler.

He says he remembers Kidd and Smith running around as kids and that’s how he still sees them, as little punks who have yet to earn their stripes.

Smith tells Jericho that they don’t run or complain when they come up against a problem, but rather attack it head on because they’re Better than the Best.

As Jericho begins to reply DX’s music hits and the current Unified Tag Team Champs appear on the Titan-Tron.

They chastise Jericho and The Hart Dynasty for killing the mood of the DX Christmas, then after some merchandise plugging they ‘give’ them gifts.

Jericho gets a ‘Tickle Me Big Show’ while ‘The Hart Kids’ get an all expenses paid one-way trip back to Canada.

Jericho talks about how childish DX are and screams at The Hart Dynasty, telling them to make an impact.

As Jericho turns back to the Titan-Tron to lay into DX some more The Hart Dynasty set him up and hit him with their tag finisher, sending a message to DX.

    Segment 3

    Meal Ticket

Elsewhere backstage Michelle McCool and Layla approach Mickie James, claiming they want to bury the hatchet.

They give Mickie a Christmas present but it turns out being a voucher for food accompanied by yet more ‘Piggie James’ insults.

Seriously guys, just drop the angle already, it wasn’t funny the first time round and it isn’t getting any more entertaining.

    Segment 4

    Rey Mysterio Interviewed

After the commercials Josh Mathews caught up with Rey back in his dressing room to ask him about tonight’s title match.

Rey wishes the WWE Universe a Merry Christmas or something in his native language before moving onto Batista and then The Undertaker.

Rey says he enjoyed getting the win over Batista last week and that Christmas is a time for miracles, so there’s every chance he could leave with the World Heavyweight Championship tonight.

    Match 2

    World Heavyweight Championship Match
    Rey Mysterio
    Vs.
    The Undertaker (c)

The fact that this match is slapped right in the middle of the card, being bumped from the main event spot by DX/The Hart Dynasty instantly makes me think that this one is going to be fairly uneventful in terms of surprises.

Batista will probably get involved, Rey will probably come close, but ultimately I expect Taker will leave with the belt.

For the first 5-10 minutes of this match it was all about The Deadman.

Mysterio took one of the most comprehensive beatings I’ve ever seen him take (and that’s saying something) but as always the tiny luchadore sprung to life after escaping the Last Ride, and instantly began to build some serious offence.

This was cut short moments later when Taker caught him with a Big Boot then a Chokeslam which looked like it would end the match.

However, just as The Deadman looked to go for the cover Batista hit the ring and attacked Taker, ending the match in a disqualification.

What followed was a 3-way finisher/reversal-fest which saw Taker get hit with a Spinebuster and Spear from Batista and a 619 from Rey, something Batista also suffered, leaving the little man the only one still standing.

The Undertaker retains the World Heavyweight Championship by Disqualification.

    Segment 5

    Poor Old St. Nick

Backstage Cryme Tyme catch up with a rather disgruntled Santa who complains about having to go and dish out toys to the crowd.

He reveals that he’s taken all the good gifts for himself, prompting Shad to give him a ‘Helping Boot’ to the face.

Cryme Tyme take the presents and head to the ring.

    Match 3

    Tag Team Match
    Cryme Tyme
    Vs.
    Bryce Andrews & Pat Buck

    What?

Cryme Tyme have gone from being glorified jobbers to taking on the ‘local talent’?

Cryme Tyme distributed some presents on their way to the ring before roundly squashing these two up and comers.

Matt Striker came up with very little info about these guys when asked by Todd Grisham, and I have to say I couldn’t find an awful lot either, other than the fact that Pat Buck has wrestled under the ring name ‘The Erotic Eradicator’, read into that what you like.

Cryme Tyme picked up the win with the G9.

    Cryme Tyme win by Pinfall.

    Segment 6

    More Cooking with Vickie

This time Vickie talks us through making an apple pie. I’m sure you can guess where this is going.

Hornswoggle interrupts again and slams her in the face with a Bananna Cream Pie, before hitting Teddy with the same fate.

    Match 4

    Divas Tag Team Match
    Mickie James & Maria
    Vs.
    Layla & Beth Phoenix

Michelle McCool joined the commentary team for this match, continuing the Piggie James bit throughout the whole match, although she did make a valid point when asking what Maria had actually done this year to earn the Diva of the Year award.

I think they are gradually turning Beth, and judging by the glance she shot her partner as they entered, we might see some more of that in this match.

Layla actually looked fairly impressive in this match, perhaps Michelle got her wrestling lessons for Christmas.

Unfortunately Beth hardly got involved in this match at all until after Mickie had scored the pinfall over Layla.

She took out the victorious Mickie James and Maria, before focusing her attention on Michelle McCool, who made a sharp exit.

Mickie James & Maria win by Pinfall.

    Main Event Match

    Unified Tag Team Championship Match
    DX (c)
    Vs.
    The Hart Dynasty (w/Natalya)

This main event seems to have been given a huge chunk of the show to run with, barring a closing segment to the show.

I’m surprised that the Unified Tag Titles haven’t been merged into one belt by now, especially with them being around the waists (or on the shoulder in Big Show’s case) of such high profile Superstars for almost a year.

The first talking point in this match came early as Triple H stated DX’s intentions, lifting Kidd up into a prolonged standing Supplex (a’ la The British Bulldog, Smith’s father) which he seemed to hold for an age before finally delivering the impact.

Moments later Smith made his way into the ring and returned the favour, holding The Game up almost as long before dropping him to the canvas and locking on a Sleeper.

The Hart Dynasty continued to control until Triple H finally got the hot tag to HBK, who entered the ring and immediately set about Kidd.

A combination of DH Smith and Natalya prevented Michaels from hitting his trademark Diving Elbow on Kidd, who then sprung into action and delivered a picture-perfect Springboard Blockbuster which almost picked up the win.

The Dynasty continued their domination, this time over HBK, with a combination of strong offence, underhanded tactics, isolation and quick tags.

After a prolonged will he/won’t he bit HBK finally tagged Triple H into the ring and he began to ‘clean house’ as good old JR would say.

However just as Triple H began to set DH Smith up for the Pedigree he reversed and and The Hart Dynasty struck with their tag finisher, requiring HBK to break up the cover.

Things broke down and after Kidd ended up down and out after attempting a missed plancha to the outside, DX struck with the Sweet Chin/Pedigree combo to secure ownership of the title belts.

A very good match that did no harm to the reputation of the Hart Dynasty.

After the match Hornswoggle joined his DX stable-mates in the ring to wish everyone a Merry Christmas.

DX Retain the Unified Tag Team Championships by Pinfall.
