The Smackdown Summary
Opening Segment
Jericho Hypes for Bragging Rights
Smackdown kicks off with The King and Michael Cole behind the announce desk.
Cole explains that this isn’t Monday Night Raw, nor is it Smackdown from circa ‘99.
The reason they are on Smackdown is in fact that Good Ol’ J.R is ‘under the weather’, to quote The King.
The WWEBlog Informant will no doubt have more on this in the next Weekly Informer, but he tells me J.R’s absence is due to a reoccurring medical complaint.
Anyway, as with last week Jericho is the first Superstar to make his way to the ring.
Once there he begins to talk about cementing his greatness further at Bragging Rights when he will undoubtedly lead Team Smackdown to victory.
Jericho then says that he has to ‘tune up’ the Blue team, claiming that they have to prove they are worthy of standing in the same ring as him.
Cryme Tyme’s music hits and JTG emerges, telling Jericho he doesn’t need him to show him a good example of ‘manhandling’.
Jericho asks if Shad is in jail, but JTG explains that he has the flu and came out here personally to tell the co-captain this.
The two bicker for a while before Vickie Guerrero emerges from the back and mangles her lines, eventually introducing Eric Escobar and accompanying him to the ring.
Once there Escobar talks about how DX claimed not to know who he was, but after he leads Smackdown to victory at Bragging Rights they will never forget his name.
Speaking of unforgettable names, Dolph Ziggler is next to hit the ring.
He too claims that he will be responsible for a Team Smackdown victory until JTG reminds him that he lost not only his last 4 Intercontinental Championship matches, but he also lost one of the hottest Divas on the Smackdown roster in Maria.
Next Drew McIntyre emerges and hypes himself as the Ace up Jericho’s sleeve, saying he can’t understand why he wasn’t named captain himself.
Finally, Kane emerges and tells them all that they are not worthy of fighting alongside him (or Jericho).
Jericho explains that they were going to have a 5 on 5 match, just like Raw, but as Shad is ’sick’ they will have to go 4 0n 5.
Not only that, if they lose ALL 5 of their opponents will replace them on Team Smackdown.
Big announcement there, and as much as I’d like to see it happen, it’s going to play havoc with our Bragging Rights articles.
Match 1
4 on 5 Team Smackdown Warm Up Match
Dolph Ziggler, JTG, Drew McIntyre & Eric Escobar
Vs.
Matt Hardy, R-Truth, Finlay, Tyson Kidd & D.H Smith
Hmm, after seeing the possible replacements I’d be highly surprised if we saw anything other than a victory for the current Smackdown team.
I wouldn’t mind if The Hart Dynasty replaced Cryme Tyme, but other than that I think Team Smackdown is benefiting from being a mostly heel set-up.
However, I’ve been very wrong before and I’m prepared to accept that I was wrong here again.
Despite many attempts to steal a victory from the current Smackdown Team, they couldn’t get it done.
The end of the match saw things break down and with the referee distracted Finlay struck with the Shaleighle, allowing Matt Hardy to cover for the pinfall and what I would consider a shock victory.
Looks like we’ve got some work to do on the Bragging Rights articles now.
Matt Hardy, R-Truth, Finlay, Tyson Kidd & D.H Smith win places on Team Smackdown by Pinfall.
Segment 2
Plotting for the World Heavyweight Championship
Backstage C.M Punk, Teddy Long and Scott Armstrong are backstage discussing the World Heavyweight Championship match tonight.
Scott Armstrong says that since Breaking Point he’s not been able to think about anything other than what they did and how it has affected his and his family’s reputation.
Punk tells him to stop being so selfish as tonight isn’t about him, it’s about creating a Straight Edge champion for the fourth time.
Teddy Long chimes in and says that he’s still on probation, so any mistakes tonight could cost him his job or even his life.
Punk asks why they understood what they had to do at Bragging Rights, but not tonight and Scott Armstrong says that his father taught him that you’re nothing without your good name and if he’s on the chopping block for this then so be it, but he won’t do his dirty work tonight.
As Armstrong goes to leave Mr. McMahon is waiting for him on the other side of the door, and tells him that they need to talk.
Match 2
Single Match
John Morrison
Vs.
Mike Knox
Knox continues with his medical based promos, this time explaining blunt abdominal trauma and indicating that he might be focusing on Morrison’s mid-section during this match.
This match didn’t last too long, but Knox was in control for the biggest part of it.
However, as he went for what is fast becoming a trademark Cross-Body, Morrison ducked and allowed the bearded-behemoth to fly into the ropes.
From there Morrison dragged him into position and landed Starship Pain for the win.
After the match Morrison talked a little about The Miz, although he didn’t say anything particularly interesting.
John Morrison wins by Pinfall.
Segment 3
The NEW Team Smackdown
Backstage the 5 newest members of Team Smackdown are celebrating when Jericho & Kane emerge.
Jericho applauds them and says they have earned their places at Bragging Rights, saying they have to follow his and Kane’s leadership.
R-Truth tells him that he can cut the speech because while they might not like him, they do respect him.
Finlay says Jericho & Kane don’t have to worry where their loyalty lies, Natalya says they are all on the same page and Matt Hardy says that they’d love nothing more than to embarrass Raw and prove they are the dominant brand.
Jericho said that is what he wanted to hear and Kane wraps things up by saying it was a good talk.
Segment 4
She’s Back Again
Elsewhere backstage Mickie James is chatting with none other than perennial old-timer; Mae Young.
Michelle McCool appears and says it’s nice to see Mae, but not so nice to see Mickey.
She says she’s sorry Mickey didn’t make Team Smackdown this year, but Natalya and Beth Phoenix are way better than her.
Mickie claims that the real reason she didn’t make the team is that McCool is scared of her and thinks she would have shown her up at Bragging Rights.
Mickie leaves and Beth Phoenix shows up, telling Mae she looks beautiful today before telling McCool not to plan on keeping her gold that long.
Mae and Michelle then have a small set-to, resulting in a precision slap from old Mae.
Segment 5
Batista and Rey
Elsewhere, elsewhere backstage Rey and Batista are discussing the rather controversial outcome to their match last week.
They eventually agree that Mysterio won, but didn’t really win, before moving their attention onto Batista’s new DVD.
Batista says he wishes they’d been able to put his 6th World Title victory at Bragging Rights on there and Rey says that would be a bit difficult as it isn’t going to happen.
Maybe WWE Studios can put these two in a Buddy Movie. Think Lethal Weapon meets Rush Hour meets Turner and Hooch (Rey’s an underDOG, get it? Ok so I know it was bad, but allow me one at least.)
Match 3
Tag Team Match
Batista & Rey Mysterio
Vs.
Chris Jericho & Kane
Once again Mysterio and Jericho re-kindled their long running rivalry during this match, putting on the quality of wrestling we’ve come to expect from the pair.
Mysterio looked like grabbing a victory in the early going, setting up Jericho for the 619.
Kane was able to make the save and dragged Rey from the ring before he could land the move.
From there the isolation began.
Jeri-Kane displayed solid teamwork during this match, keeping Batista on the apron while they kept Rey in their corner on the defensive.
Batista finally got the hot-tag and immediately went about taking out both members of Team Smackdown, but the numbers game caught up with him and Kane quickly regained control, setting up for the Chokeslam.
However, Rey selflessly sacrificed himself, jumping on Kane and taking a Chokeslam in place of his partner, allowing Batista to hit the Spear and pick up the win.
Batista & Rey Mysterio win by Pinfall.
Segment 6
Don’t Cross the Boss
Back in Teddy Long’s office he, Punk, Scott Armstrong and Mr. McMahon are still discussing tonight’s World Heavyweight Championship match.
Armstrong looks like he is under some serious pressure, and holds his head while McMahon and Punk talk about how excited they are for the upcoming title match.
McMahon says that it’s important they have an impartial referee and that everyone ‘does their job’ out at ringside.
Vince then talks about the time of the year, ringing in the changes and how things that start here often lead to WrestleMania. He talks about some of the main features of WrestleMania, namely the Hall of Fame.
Vince says that Armstrong’s father is one hell of a man and would be a perfect candidate to enter the Hall of Fame next year. Do you see what he’s getting at?
Vince talks a little more about families and their importance, then asks if everyone is ready and they all reply that they are.
Match 4
Divas Match
Mickie James
Vs.
Layla
A gauge of how exciting and important this match was came from King and Cole, who spent the majority if the relatively short bout talking about Bragging Rights and the possibility that Cena might be joining Smackdown next week.
Mickie James won with the match with a Kick to the face, her first on Smackdown.
Mickie James wins by Pinfall.
Main Event Match
World Heavyweight Championship Submissions Match
The Undertaker (c)
Vs.
C.M Punk
As The Undertaker made his way to the ring, Punk stood at ringside with a huge grin on his face.
Taker reluctantly handed his World Heavyweight Championship to Armstrong, who started the match moments later.
The Deadman started the match with a clear intent to not only win the match but do Punk some serious damage, drilling him with a huge left hand to the face before backing him into the corner and raining down on him with rights and lefts.
Punk momentarily regained advantage and almost locked in the Anaconda Vise, but Taker quickly wriggled out of it just before a commercial break.
When the action returned Taker was back in control, throwing Punk around ringside, slamming him into the announce table and the steel steps.
Back in the ring Punk ducked out of the way of a Big Boot, which hung The Deadman up on the top rope, allowing the Straight Edge Superstar to mount his first extended period of offence during this match.
The next turning point in the bout came after Taker had attempted to lock in Hell’s Gate unsuccessfully. As Punk looked to be heading for some ‘Old School’, Teddy Long rose from his seat and distracted The Undertaker long enough for Punk to reverse and take advantage.
Punk then begged Teddy for the steel chair and the Smackdown G.M tentatively rose to his feet and handed it to Scott Armstrong, like that in some way exempts him from the situation.
The Undertaker booted the steel chair back into the face of Punk and then hit Armstrong with a Chokeslam, before setting his sights firmly on Teddy Long.
This turned out to be a mistake as Punk used the distraction to his advantage, taking Taker out with 3 brutal chair shots.
Punk told Long to get a new referee while he locked in the Anaconda Vise, but as a new official sprinted to the ring Taker reversed it into a Hell’s Gate and Punk tapped just in time for Mike Chioda (I think it was) to ring the bell.
Somehow Taker retains his title going into Bragging Rights, but I don’t think we’ve heard the last of this situation.
The Undertaker wins by Submission.
