The Smackdown Summary
Pre-Segment
Hello everyone!
Before I get started I’d first like to apologise for how late this week’s Smackdown Summary is, and give a little explanation which will *hopefully* be fairly short.
Let me paint you a little picture.
It’s 4.30am last night, I sit down in my favourite writing chair, put together this page and load up Smackdown on my PVR. I’m just about to start writing when disaster strikes.
Now, you may wonder why in the world I was about to start writing at 4.30am. Well, the reason is I got a new job last week (incredibly belated thanks to Shaun Banton, who sent his congratulations on getting my last job over 7 months ago via Twitter, which I only actually saw about a month ago) so everything is up in the air and I’m having to squeeze in writing where I can until things settle down.
The good news is the job is only Monday-Wednesday, so the blog shouldn’t really suffer as a result.
Anyway, just before I started to write last night I decided I’d check the blog’s stats, which turned out to be a big mistake.
There in the referral pages was a website I didn’t recognise, but not looking particularly harmful I gave it a click.
After a barrage of pornography, adverts for cheap I-Phones and supermarket vouchers (how those three are supposed to be connected I still can’t figure out) blasted up on my screen I ended up with a malicious virus posing as a virus scanner.
So, after numerous scans, shut-downs, Alt-Ctrl-Del’s and registry edits it finally appears to be gone and the Smackdown Summary can finally begin!
Or it would have been able to, had my Smackdown recording not somehow become corrupted.
So, after managing to acquire a copy of the show it’s finally time to find out what happened on Smackdown, and despite the WWEBlog Informant ‘informing’ me earlier in the day that this weeks instalment is ‘absolute crap’, I’m willing to watch with an open mind and give it a go anyway.
Segment 1
Hell Fire & Brimstone
As you can probably guess, the new World Heavyweight Champion Kane is kicking off Smackdown tonight.
After a pretty respectful reaction from the crowd some ominous music begins to play and Kane tells a rather disturbing story about how he used to dangle his pet goldfish above it’s bowl, watching it gasping for air.
He says that is exactly how he felt for 13 years, until Sunday night, when he won Money in the Bank and cashed in to become the new World Heavyweight Champion, something that he values as the most gratifying moment of his entire career.
Kane talks at great length about how Swagger attacked Rey after he lost the World Heavyweight Championship match, about the relief in Rey’s eyes when he initially came to the ring to make the save and then how that relief quickly faded when he returned to the ring and took the title.
Rapturous cheers erupt once more as Kane tells the story, then as he explains that he did it all for his brother; The Undertaker.
He says that when he went to Taker’s bedside following the win, all his feelings of adulation drained and his soul was overcome with shame and sorrow because of the state his once all-powerful was in.
Kane barked out in anger and said that he made a promise to his brother, that no one would ever tear this holy grail from around his waist, and that he will not rest until he finds the person responsible for his brothers demise.
Amazing promo.
Not too long, to the point, well written and perfectly delivered by Smackdown’s most over-looked veteran.
A lot of people have been talking about why Kane has the title when for months, if not years he has been completely overlooked.
This segment is exactly why in my opinion, but apparently there seems to be another reason, which I’ll be covering later in the night, courtesy of a news-flash from the WWEBlog Informant!
Match 1
Tag Team Match
Matt Hardy & Christian
Vs.
Drew McIntyre & ‘Dashing’ Cody Rhodes
I don’t really like seeing McIntyre in tag matches, I don’t think they particularly suit his style.
I get the impression that McIntyre is a kind of ‘out for himself’ heel, so the whole teamwork aspect doesn’t really wash with me.
That said, he and Cody worked well together here and ‘The Dashing One’ continued to impress once again.
Matt Striker babbled on about how he doesn’t wear knee-pads in a homage to the good old days, then continually called Hardcore Holly’s old finisher ‘The Alabama Jam’, for no reason what so ever.
I assume the same reason he continually comes up with 200 ridiculous nicknames a week that never stick.
The end of the match (as always) broke down into a 4-person brawl that saw Matt Hardy accidentally (or on purpose if you believe Matt Striker, despite it blatantly being accidental) drill Christian and lose seconds later to a Big Boot.
After the bell Christian dragged Hardy to his feet then offered a handshake, which Hardy eventually, and very tentatively accepted.
Drew McIntyre & Cody Rhodes win by Pinfall.
Segment 2
Jack Swagger Interviewed
Backstage Josh Mathews asked Swagger about the upcoming #1 Contender 2 out of 3 falls match against Rey Mysterio.
Swagger attempts to portray anger, talking about Rey taking a leaf out of Eddie Guerrero’s playbook on Sunday, but just comes across looking like he has some sort of retardation.
He calls Rey a cheat and promises to decimate him tonight, also claiming almost full responsibility for Kane now holding the World Heavyweight Champion.
He says that once he beats Rey he’ll do the same to Kane at SummerSlam, putting him in the same place as The Big Red Machine put his father; in hospital.
Another Alberto Del Rio promo played after this, but I’m not wasting my time going into detail, just début the guy already!
Segment 3
Celebration Time
Elsewhere backstage Lay-Cool are celebrating Layla’s victory at Money in the Bank with a bottle of Champagne.
Michelle and Layla reveal that they have both bought each other gifts to celebrate the occasion, swapping what turn out to be ‘best friends’ pendants.
Teddy Long enters and congratulates Layla on her title defence, but then ruins the party by telling her she will be defending the title next week against Tiffany.
Match 2
Singles Match
Kofi Kingston (w/Michael McGillicutty)
Vs.
Dolph Ziggler (w/Vickie Guerrero)
Two of my favourite guys on Smackdown at the minute meant I spent the majority of this match watching rather than writing.
Towards the end of the match Kofi Kingston got dumped to the outside where McGillicutty attempted to check if he was O.K, incurring the wroth of Vickie Guerrero as he did so.
She had the referee eject MM from ringside, stacking the deck in favour of her latest squeeze.
This seemed to work for a while, but wasn’t quite enough to stop Kingston mounting some match-ending offence, and it took a pretty hefty distraction from Vickie to allow Ziggler to hit the Zig-Zag and lock on the Sleeper to score the win.
After the match Dolph grabbed the IC title from ringside and posed with it over Kofi’s semi-concious body.
I’m hoping he wins it sooner rather than later, because when he does I’m also hoping he’ll drop Vickie like a bad smell.
Dolph Ziggler wins by TKO.
Match 3
Singles Match
The Big Show
Vs.
Luke Gallows (w/The S.E.S)
Before this match could begin C.M Punk hopped up on the apron and told Luke Gallows to exit the ring.
Instead he then ordered the masked man into the ring and the match began with this unknown guy taking Gallows place.
Match 3.1
Singles Match
The Big Show
Vs.
Mystery Man (w/The S.E.S)
This match didn’t last long, and seemed like an odd move from Punk given that Show unmasked him last week.
Why throw the masked guy in there against someone who just one week ago did some pretty successful unmasking?
Anyway, Show peeled back the mask and sure enough, the Superstar underneath was indeed Joey Mercury, as our anonymous tipster had suggested a few weeks back.
The big man then delivered a Knockout Punch to get the 1..2..3.
Yet another mystery solved.
The Big Show wins by Pinfall.
Segment 4
Rey’s Ankle
After a Raw Rebound we head backstage where Josh Mathews asks Rey if he thinks his body will be able to handle an intense, physical 2 out of 3 falls match tonight.
Rey says that he isn’t happy with how things happened on Sunday, that he wouldn’t have done what Kane did and that the only way he can make things right is by beating Swagger twice tonight.
He assures Mathews that the next time he meets Kane in the ring it’ll be a completely different story.
Hmm, so not quite an answer to the question asked then.
Another Alberto Del Rio promo played after this. His accent seems to get thicker with every passing vignette, if they don’t début him soon he’s going to be indecipherable.
Main Event Match
2 out of 3 Falls World Heavyweight Championship #1 Contendership Match
Rey Mysterio
Vs.
Jack Swagger
I’ll level with you, I don’t really want to see Swagger/Kane or Mysterio/Kane at SummerSlam, so as a result I don’t really care who wins this match.
S0, while both guys battle on in the ring, I’ll bring you The Informant’s latest snippet of gossip as promised earlier in the Summary.
Hello folks!
Well, who would have believed it eh?
Kane, the World Heavyweight Champion once more over a decade after he originally took and dropped the top level gold.
But WHY?
I mean for a long LONG time The Big Red Machine has been completely ignored when it comes to championship gold, so what’s changed now?
Well, rumour has it that Kane’s flame is burning dimmer now than ever before, and the man formerly known as Isaac Yankem DDS is seriously considering hanging up his flame retardant attire.
The plan as far as I’m aware is to have The Undertaker return at the climax of SummerSlam and somehow set up a rivalry with his Brother, more than likely revealing that it was in fact Kane that attacked him.
However, this seems to be the common theory on the net, and as illustrated by the whole ‘Ken Kennedy should have been Mr. McMahon’s illegitimate son’ fiasco, the WWE Creative team are quite prone to changing things if they think the payoff has been largely sussed out.
So, in short expect The Deadman to return at SummerSlam and expect Kane to be hanging up his boots permanently once this title run comes to an end.
Until next time folks, stay cynical.
- The Informant
Anyway, back in the ring Jack Swagger applies the Ankle Lock then fails to relinquish it despite Rey clutching onto the ropes, costing him the first fall of the match.
First Fall
Rey Mysterio by Disqualification.
After commercials Rey came very close to hitting the 619, but Swagger caught him and applied the Ankle Lock, making Rey tap to take it to the third fall.
Second Fall
Jack Swagger by Submission.
The time between falls was didn’t seem long at all, and it looked like Swagger had executed the perfect strategy by messing up Rey’s ankle to the point that he could barely stand.
After a pair of Splashes using the ropes to add leverage Swagger covered and it looked like the match was over, but somehow Rey kicked out and managed to reverse a third Splash, catching him in the mouth with a boot before hitting a Seated Senton from the top rope.
Seconds later he reversed a Gutwrench Powerbomb AND a roll-up to snatch a 1..2..3 and earn the #1 contendership spot.
Third Fall
Rey Mysterio by Pinfall.
After the bell Swagger began to attack Rey just like at Money in the Bank, and just like at Money in the Bank Kane hit the ring to make the save.
However, unlike last Sunday’s Pay Per View Kane helped Rey to his feet and held his arm aloft, crediting him for the difficult victory.
This was short-lived though, as Kane returned to the ring moments later to strike, only to get caught with a 619.
Rey Mysterio wins by Pinfall & becomes the #1 Contender for the World Heavyweight Championship.
