The Smackdown Summary
Match 1
Singles Match
Batista
Vs.
Finlay
When I heard Batista’s music hit at the start of the show I fully expected him to make his way to the ring in street clothes and complain about how Rey somehow cheated him out of the #1 contendership last week.
But no, he’s here instead to take on the number 2 Irishman in the company at the minute; Finlay.
The Animal also has a new entrance, of sorts.
It’s the same music, but rather than setting off a huge crowd-pleasing pyro, Batista points to himself as a spotlight shrouds him in light.
This match didn’t last long at all, and surprisingly Finlay had the better of it while it did. However, the second Batista took control he attempted to gouge his opponents eyes out, causing the disqualification.
Batista then went on the rampage, hurling Finlay over the announce table before destroying him with numerous savage attacks around the ringside area.
After the steel steps, barricade and ringpost had done some damage Batista rolled Finlay back in the ring, where he hit a Spinebuster and declared that he’s going to destroy 29 other Supersters in the same manner at the Royal Rumble.
Finlay wins by Disqualification.
Segment 1
More from the Straight Edge Society
After clips of the Fatal 4 Way Tag Team match from last week, which saw ‘The Straight Edge Society’ become #1 contenders for the Unified Tag Team Championships, Punk began to talk about how and why they will be taking the gold.
He announced that they would have their title match against DX next week on Smackdown, and once they win that match he will be ready to go into the Rumble and win that too.
After yet another one of his trademark ‘holier than thou’ rants toward the crowd, this time about how parents are setting a bad example for children, he says that only he can wash away all their problems and save each and every last one of them.
In a change to the norm this week, just as Punk began to select a person to be saved, a crazy woman jumped the barricade and seemingly tried to attack him.
Gallows held her off until the security were able to drag her away, but as she neared the top of the ramp screaming ‘I need you’, Punk told the security to release her and got Luke to escort her back to the ring.
Once there ‘Serena’ admitted she is an addict, but wants to change.
After another chastising speech Punk asks her if she’s ready and she says that she is.
She sits down and recites the Straight Edge Pledge, then proves her devotion to the cause by having her head shaved bald.
Chances of seeing Serena again? Slim I’d say. Although to be fair to her she was very good on the microphone.
Match 2
2 on 1 Handicap Match
John Morrison
Vs.
Drew McIntyre & Chris Jericho
Vickie Guerrero apparently booked this match, and the commentary team made sure we knew this prior to Teddy Long appearing at the top of the ramp just before the action started.
He explained that Vickie had booked this one without his approval, which is why he’s turned it into a tag team match, with R-Truth filling the empty spot.
I can honestly say I’d rather it stayed the way it was.
Match 2.1
Tag Team Match
John Morrison & R-Truth
Vs.
Drew McIntyre & Chris Jericho
Morrison and R-Truth started the match in control, but it didn’t take long for McIntyre and Jericho to isolate Morrison after R-Truth took a big bump.
As McIntyre wore down his rival in the ring, Chris Jericho made his way to the announce desk and demanded the commentary team sing his praises. It’s exactly that type of stuff that makes Jericho one of my favourite guys at the minute.
The isolation continued for what seemed like an age, until Morrison finally made the hot tag to R-Truth.
Truth cleaned house and almost picked up the win on his own, but eventually required some assistance from Morrison behind the referee’s back to get the job done.
I stand by my previous statement; this match would have been better without R-Truth.
John Morrison & R-Truth win by Pinfall.
Segment 2
Lay-Cool Leaving Party
Michelle and Layla are in the ring after the commercials with a table of party food.M
Michelle says there is some bad news and some good news.
The bad news is that all her fans will not be able to see her in action at The Royal Rumble, as her title match against Mickie James has been cancelled.
However, the supposed good news is that Mickie James is leaving Smackdown tonight for good, and to that end they’ve thrown her a ‘Go Away’ party.
As Michelle and Layla make fun of Mickie by way of a pig-shaped cake, Maria’s music hits and she makes her way to the ‘party’.
Maria tells them they are annoying (ironically in a rather annoying, screechy tone) then says that they are the ones who should be leaving Smackdown.
After more food-based ‘humour’ from Lay-Cool Mickie James makes her way out to the ring and says pretty much the same thing as Maria.
She says that women come in all shapes and sizes, but are all gorgeous and sexy just the same, and proud of it.
Mickie says that she’s going nowhere unless the WWE Universe tell her differently and they seem to be happy with her right here on Smackdown.
Michelle and Layla make more fat jokes which to be honest is getting really old now.
Especially from Michelle, who allegedly almost died due to anorexia and taking a near-lethal concoction of diet pills.
I wasn’t aware of it, but one of the other WWEBlog staff members mentioned it in an e-mail and I did a bit of digging.
Anyway, things got physical in the ring and all four women began brawling.
Beth Phoenix then hit the ring and looked like she was in some sort of ethical dilemma as to who to attack.
She eventually went for Maria then Mickie, holding her down while Michelle crammed a cake pig into her face and then dumped punch over her head.
As the three heel Divas left the ring, Mickie looked genuinely distraught at how things had turned out.
She’s not the only one, this was the most pointless segment I’ve suffered through in a long while.
The pig cake looked pretty nice though.
Match 3
Tag Team Match
Cryme Tyme
Vs.
Mike Knox & Charlie Haas
This match had barely gotten underway when Kane’s pyro went off and The Big Red Machine made his way down to the ring.
After dumping all four guys over the top rope Kane set off his ringpost flares, while Matt Striker explained that this was Royal Rumble fueled and that Kane had just made himself a favourite.
Match ends in a No Contest.
Main Event Match
Tag Team Match
Matt Hardy & The Great Khali (w/Ranjin Singh)
Vs.
The Hart Dynasty (w/Natalya)
I was quite surprised to see them still running with the Hardy/Khali team, so I was even more shocked when the thrown together team were able to pick up the win in this one.
The big story in this one was how Natalya distracted Khali at the end of the match. Matt Striker suggested the idea that maybe it was the other way around, and Khali had actually distracted Natalya while Hardy grabbed the win.
Either way, I don’t really care.
The Hart Dynasty are better than this.
Matt Hardy & The Great Khali win by Pinfall.
Closing Segment
Rey Calls Out Taker
I’ve got a feeling this segment is going to be pretty self explanatory, but I’ll try and cover the main points.
Rey started by saying the only thing standing between him and his ‘dream’ of holding the World Heavyweight Championship is the nightmare that is The Undertaker.
He says that he wants Taker to come to the ring so he can look him dead in the eye and tell him that he’s not afraid.
Undertaker obliged and made his way to the ring.
Once there he asked Rey if he was having second thoughts, and Rey admitted that he was a little bit.
Rey then talked about the last time they met for the title, saying that he had the win in the bag until Batista interfered.
He dragged it out with talk of Shawn Michaels, but his basic point was that he would take the title at WrestleMania.
Taker says they are bold words, but then Rey has made a career out of overcoming the supposedly impossible.
He tells Rey that he will suffer the same fate as everyone else that has tried to make a name for themselves at The Deadman’s expense, and at the Royal Rumble he will Rest. In. Peace.
When are the writers going to get it? Face Vs. Face doesn’t work.
Just as it looked like the promo was over and Taker headed up the ramp Rey called up to him and said that he’s not like the rest.
Then, as if this segment hadn’t been random enough, Batista slid into the ring and took Mysterio out with a Batista Bomb.
Taker slowly walked back to the ring, but Batista made his exit before The Deadman got there.
I still think there’s a slim chance this will end up being a Triple Threat match.
And that folks, rounds off a very disappointing edition of Smackdown.
See you all for Raw, if you haven’t lost the will to live by then.
