The Smackdown Summary
Segment 1
Gracious Salvation
We’ve got a good old fashioned ‘rivalry-swap’ later on tonight, with McIntyre/Kingston trading Over the Limit opponents with Show/Swagger.
But up first tonight is yet another ‘Saviour’ segment from The Straight Edge Society.
Luke Gallows and Serena give Punk a rousing introduction, while three ‘audience members’ sit in the centre of the ring, presumably awaiting ‘salvation’.
Gallows says that Canada is the ideal place for Punk’s most gracious act of generosity, as it is legal for teenagers to drink alcohol there.
He talked about Punk’s match with Rey at Over The Limit, before passing the microphone back to Serena, who introduced the people sat in the ring.
When I say introduced, she referred to them as the decay of the country, then said that Punk would heal them tonight just like he will Rey on Sunday.
Finally Punk gets hold of the stick and tells everyone in the arena and all the viewers around the world to raise their hands and feel the power of Straight Edge flow through them.
He makes the three ‘losers’ in the ring take the Straight Edge Pledge’, congratulates them for no longer being weak like the rest of the audience, then ‘healed’ them by shaving their heads, while rather bizarrely the ‘cage lowering’ music played.
Once all three men were (just about) bald Rey Mysterio decided to interject, appearing at the top of the ramp before branding Punk’s ‘mass induction ceremony’ as ridiculous.
Rey shows a photo-shopped picture of Punk bald and the segment ends.
However, after the commercials it is revealed that the S.E.S took out their frustrations on the newest inductees, beating the crap out of them.
Match 1
Divas Tag Team Match
Lay-Cool
Vs.
Kelly Kelly & Tiffany
So, with Beth out of the way we’re left with Tiff and Kelly as viable rivals fro the dominant Michelle McCool and tag-along Layla El.
This is really it for Smackdown, there aren’t any other divas on the brand now Mickie James has gone, so the quicker Layla and Michelle split and feud the better, that is unless they are prepared to bring a few more high quality divas in.
I love the co-champions thing, but there’s no one that’s really a viable threat.
Lay-Cool picked up a win here, but Kelly and Tiffany dominated a lot of the bout.
Lay-Cool win by Pinfall.
Segment 2
Show Facts
Backstage Show decides to replicate Swagger’s recent style of promo, delivering a piece to camera backstage talking about some of his ‘achievements’.
The first one is knocking Jack Swagger out a couple of weeks ago, which he accompanies with a clip.
Match 2
Singles Match
JTG
Vs.
Caylen Croft (w/ Trent Barretta)
During their entrance ‘The Dudebusters’ had a little pre-recorded video play.
They said something about busting up JTG tonight, I didn’t pay that much attention and it was only a couple of lines.
I won’t mince words on this one, as it didn’t last long.
JTG picked up the win but overall this was pretty forgettable stuff.
JTG wins by Pinfall.
Segment 3
Peep This
Backstage Christian enters official consultant Vickie Guerrero’s office.
She asks if she can be the first guest on his newly re-vamped Peep Show that will take place tonight.
Christian refuses, saying he actually wants people to watch, then explains that he did a poll and she wasn’t even in the top 100.
He says he’s put together a video package of people who polled higher than her, which included Bret Hart, The Brooklyn Brawler, Jared ‘The Subway Guy’ and Lester ‘The guy who loves chicken’.
She asks who is number 1 but Christian refuses to answer, and instead just tells her that he and his guest tonight have never seen eye to eye.
Match 3
Tag Team Match
Curt Hawkins & Vance Archer
Vs.
Brent Roberts & Jeremy Barner
Unfortunately due to Over the Limit ‘limiting’ my time, I wasn’t able to research these guys like I normally do.
If you know anything about them, or if you are indeed either Brent Roberts or Jeremy Barner, please get in touch using the contact us page!
As you’d expect Archer and Hawkins dominated the match and picked up the win.
After the bell Archer grabbed a microphone and told the crowd to pay attention to his partner.
Hawkins explained that they had 22 days left to make an impact, and they are going to do it, whether the WWE Universe likes it or not.
Hmm, wonder if they’ll get involved at OTL.
JTG & M.V.P win by Pinfall.
Segment 4
Show Facts
Back to The Big Show now.
This time he brags about Chokeslamming Swagger through an announce table.
I’m sensing a running theme here…
Match 4
Singles Match
Jack Swagger
Vs.
Kofi Kingston
Swagger hits the ring first and instantly turns his attention to The Big Show rather than his upcoming opponent.
Swagger says Show disrespected him, the state of Oklahoma, his father and the World Heavyweight Championship last week, so at Over the Limit he’s going to disrespect The Big Show.
As good as this match was, the highlight had to be Swagger leaning on the guard rail, totally oblivious to the fact that a fan behind him was holding up a huge neon yellow sign that said ‘THWAGGER TTHHUCKS’.
This got a huge chunk of the card and it deserved every second of it.
Swagger looked to be closing in on a win after a Big Boot, but as he looked to seal the victory Show emerged from the back screaming his name.
He told Swagger he had something really important to tell him, distracting the Champ just long enough for Kingston to fly from the top rope and pick up the 3 count with a flying cross body.
Show put his final piece of information up on the titan-tron, which simply read ‘ KOFI JUST BEAT YOU’.
Kofi Kingston wins by Pinfall.
Segment 5
The Peep Show with ???
The Peep Show has had a massive overhaul since it’s previous incarnation all those years ago.
With a new logo, new signs and a new set, Christian began the segment by addressing his home country fans.
He re-iterated that he and his guest have never really seen eye to eye, then introduced… Hornswoggle.
Oh great.
Hornswoggle made his way out from the back, still clad in DX gear.
Matt Striker had the nerve to say ‘You can be sure that whenever Hornswoggle is in the ring, you are going to be entertained’. I’d go as far as to say I hold the polar opposite view.
Christian tells the little guy to do a DX chop for the audience, then holds his microphone while he clambers into the high seat.
It’s sad that THIS is what DX has become.
Christian said that they have some things in common because they are both here on Smackdown to make a big impression and get into a little bit of trouble.
When Hornswoggle has trouble speaking, Christian says he’ll teach him some Canadian, starting with ‘Eh’.
He follows up with ‘hoser’, ‘hockey’ and ‘beer’ before Vickie Guerrero finally interrupts with her nephew Chavo in tow.
Oh god no, not Chavo and Hornswoggle again, please!
Vickie says she’s shutting down The Peep Show because no one wants to sit and watch a useless little troll learn language from the most useless country in the world.
Christian says he was going to teach Hornswoggle a few more words, like Obesity and Moose. Hornswoggle learns Moose and begins shouting it at Vickie until Chavo tells him to stop.
Vickie says that if Christian doesn’t leave voluntarily she has ‘someone’ that will help him.
She looks towards Chavo and he slowly makes his way into the ring.
At this point Hornswoggle hides in a box that makes up part of the set.
Just as Chavo is about to strike Dolph Ziggler attacks Christian from behind, folding him up with a Zig Zag.
Chavo follows up with a Frog Splash, then leaves with his auntie while Ziggler stands over Christian.
Match 5
Tag Team Match
Rey Mysterio & M.V.P
Vs.
C.M Punk & Luke Gallows (w/Serena)
I really couldn’t face seeing yet more Punk/Mysterio this close to another big match between the two.
Equally I couldn’t face watching M.V.P make up half of yet another pointless tag team, so I spooled through this match.
Mysterio got the pinfall over Punk after taking out the hooded figure, who for the first time since his arrival failed to make an impact.
Rey Mysterio & M.V.P win by Pinfall.
Segment 6
Drew McIntyre Interviewed
Backstage Josh Mathews asked Drew if he felt he was deserving of the Intercontinental title after being stripped of it.
Drew said that Hardy deserved the beating he got, Teddy Long deserved to get a dressing down from the management and he truly deserves to be the chosen one, as hand picked by Mr. McMahon.
Kofi Kingston showed up and said that he would take the title on Sunday because he earned it, he deserves it and he wants it back.
Main Event Match
Singles Match
The Big Show
Vs.
Drew McIntyre
There was very little time left on the clock by the point that this match got started, so anyone expecting an epic brawl was always likely to end up disappointed.
Show dominated McIntyre in a way that we’ve never seen happen so far, but just as he was about to pick up the win with a Chokeslam Jack Swagger hit the ring and attacked.
Swagger hit multiple Springboard Splashes before stomping on the Knockout and Chokeslam hand. He then grabbed a chair from outside and closed in on his opponent.
Show punched the chair from Swagger’s hand, then picked it up and began to pursue the Champ, but Swagger fled before any damage could be done.
The Big Show wins by Disqualification.
