    The Smackdown Summary

    Match 1

    Singles Match
    Batista
    Vs.
    Matt Hardy

Firstly apologies for how late the Smackdown Summary is this week. I’ve been feeling a little under the weather, incredibly busy preparing WWEBlog Towers for Christmas and also preparing a behind-the-scenes update that will take place some point after Survivor Series.

The update should add some stability to the site and allow us to expand and hopefully add a few more features.

Anyway, we’ve got a main-event rematch from a few weeks ago kicking off Smackdown tonight, although I think the best is certainly yet to come tonight with both the reunion of the Brothers of Destruction AND a 2 out of 3 falls match between Morrison and Ziggler.

Batista dominated this match in the early going, demonstrating some new offence that Matt Striker explained he picked up while recovering from injury.

Hardy momentarily got back into it with some nice reversals, but The Animal seized on a mistake and hit a trio of Spinebusters before wrapping up the match with a Batista Bomb.

I’m getting the heel vibe from Batista, but I think they need to tweak his character and maybe give him some new entrance music to really hit the turn home.

I think Batista would be suited to a similar gimmick to The Rocks heel run after he returned from Hollywood. Basically a guy that doesn’t have time for the fans, or anyone else for that matter.

    Batista wins by Pinfall.

    Opening Segment

    Batista Interviewed

Josh Mathews tries to ask Batista about what happened at the contract signing last week, but The Animal cut him off and said that Rey made 3 major mistakes; costing him the title, signing the hold harmless agreement and embarrassing him last week.

He wraps it up by saying at Survivor Series he will show no remorse.

    Segment 2

    Vickie’s Advice

Backstage Vickie Guerrero, along with Eric Escobar, enters Teddy’s office and asks what he is thinking re-uniting Kane and Taker when they could easily destroy his main event at Survivor Series.

Teddy explains that this was Mr. McMahon’s decision not his and she says that therein lies the problem. She tells him to take control of his show, then chastises him for not using her boyfriend for the past few weeks.

Teddy tells her he doesn’t need advice, then asks them to leave. However, before they can Mr. McMahon enters.

After shaking Escobar’s hand and saying he has displayed a lot of promise, Vince chews out Long, telling him reuniting the Brothers of Destruction was an imbecilic idea, and that he warned him it could destroy the main event at Survivor Series.

Vince then makes Vickie a consultant of Smackdown, in order to help Teddy get off probation.

Vickie goes crazy, screaming with joy and dancing around like Big Dick Johnson.

    Match 2

    Singles Match
    Drew McIntyre
    Vs.
    Finlay

Before the match McIntyre says that while Finlay claims that he loves to fight, in his experience he actually loves to cry and whimper, then likens the Fighting Irishman to a scared little old lady.

This one broke down into an out and out brawl seconds after the bell, with Finlay getting the upper hand and refusing to let McIntyre out of the corner despite the best attempts of the referee.

Rather than disqualifying the Irishman, which would have happened in like 90% of matches, the ref dragged him out of the corner long enough for McIntyre to deliver an unnoticed thumb to the eye.

What is it with Finlay and eye injuries?

Moments later McIntyre hit the Double Underhook DDT and picked up the win.

    Drew McIntyre wins by Pinfall.

    Segment 3

    C.M Punk’s Message of Survival

This doesn’t look like it is going to be one of Punk’s usual preachy segments. Sure, it will more than likely be filled with preachy comments and insults directed at the fans, but this time it seems he has visual aids!

There is a table set up in the ring with 3 upturned buckets, each marked with a big red X. In front of the table is a WWE-Style tinfoil garbage can.

Punk enters the ring and says he’s going to help the crowd with an intervention, something their loved ones should have done a long time ago.

He explains that the first step to recovery is a confession, then implores the crowd (and the fans at home) to stand up and admit that they have a problem and they are addicts.

When the crowd refuse to do so he claims they are all in denial, but says he will teach them all how to survive.

He removes the first bucket to reveal a carton of cigarettes. After talking about the dangers of inhaling smoke and chastising the fans for ignoring the clearly printed warnings, he dumps them in the trash can.

Next up is a small pot of prescription medication. Punk says the fans hide behind prescriptions and doctors, gobbling medication like it’s candy. He says they should take medication only as prescribed, before dropping them in the garbage too.

Last but not least, a bottle of Whiskey (which actually received the biggest pop of the night so far.) Punk classes this as the worst of them all, describing it as poison and blaming it for practically all life’s problems.

He pours the whole bottle into the can while the fans boo incessantly.

R-Truth makes an appearance and after spouting his catchphrases tells Punk that while he may class himself as better than everyone else, the truth is people make their own decisions in life and he doesn’t like him.

Truth then kicks the trash can into Punk’s midsection, delivers a DDT then dumps the contents of the can all over him.

A really well delivered segment from Punk.

    Match 3

Intercontinental Championship 2 out of 3 Falls Match
    John Morrison (c)
    Vs.
    Dolph Ziggler

As much as I’ve really been looking forward to this match, the outcome seems pretty obvious at first glance.

At Survivor Series it’s basically Team United States Champion Vs. Team Intercontinental Champion, so moving the title onto Ziggler and having both pieces of gold on one team would certainly make them look like the better team, at least on paper.

That being said, Ziggler has failed to take the IC title like 5 or 6 times in a row now, so yet another failed attempt here would really set him back.

A fast paced start from both men saw Morrison attempt a Starship Pain twice, failing to land it both times.

However, as Ziggler attempted to capitalise on this, Morrison rolled him up and grabbed the first fall very quickly.

John Morrison takes the First Fall by Pinfall.

It wasn’t long before the second fall either and unsurprisingly this went in Ziggler’s favour, hitting a Zig Zag after escaping a roll-up and avoiding a Kick to the Face.

Dolph Ziggler takes the Second Fall by Pinfall.

So we’re down to a straight match now, the next Pinfall or Submission will win the match and claim the title.

Ziggler wasted no time getting back on the offensive, hitting a Dropkick to grab another 2 count, before grounding Morrison with a Bodyscissors/Sleeper submission hold.

Morrison broke free but Ziggler hit a beautiful move worthy of winning the match (it was a Gorilla Press into a pair of Knee’s to the midsection), but somehow Morrison kicked out.

After yet more offence from Ziggler, Morrison hit a huge Spinning DDT before finally landing the Starship Pain to retain the gold.

Fantastic match, as always. I just wonder what this means for Ziggler now, he’ll have to have a very good showing at Survivor Series, perhaps even needing to pin Morrison to stand a chance of getting another shot at the gold

John Morrison takes the Third Fall by Pinfall and Retains the Intercontinental Championship.

    Match 4

    Divas Match
    Mickie James
    Vs.
    Layla

I was surprised not to see Michelle accompanying Layla here, although I wouldn’t rule out a distraction at some point in the match.

James started with real aggression and despite a short flurry from Layla, picked up the win in no time at all, with a roll up.

After the match Layla drew Mickie’s attention to the titan-tron where Michelle McCool performed her own version of ‘Old McDonald’, portraying Mickie as a pig which made the former WWE Women’s Champion cry as she left the ringside area.

Personally I thought this was more embarrassing for Michelle, but I guess the creative team didn’t think so.

It probably would have worked slightly better had there been any sort of reference to Mickie looking like a pig prior to this segment.

    Mickie James wins by Pinfall.

    Match 5

    Singles Match
    Rey Mysterio
    Vs.
    Tyson Kidd (w/Natalya)

Batista joined the commentary team for this one, but didn’t actually say anything much, completely defeating the point.

D.H Smith didn’t join his Hart Dynasty team-mates, but it didn’t really matter as this match didn’t run for longer than a couple of minutes.

As Tyson Kidd ended up on the outside Batista finally showed signs of life, jumping to his feet and pushing the young up and comer into the guard rail, effectively costing Mysterio the win.

As Batista paced around looking rather pleased with himself Mysterio launched himself over the announce table and delivered a Seated Senton, knocking The Animal over the chair he had previously been seated in.

Batista attempted to chase Mysterio and gain some revenge, but the Ultimate Underdog proved to be too quick for him, leaving him embarrassed and angry in the centre of the ring.

    Tyson Kidd wins by Disqualification.

    Segment 4

    Jeri-Show Talk Tactics

Backstage Jericho tells Big Show that despite the match they have coming up, they should focus on tonight’s match or Kane and Taker will destroy them.

Show says that his mind is on becoming the World Heavyweight Champion, leading Jericho to call him selfish.

Show asks Jericho if he is scared, then tells his partner to relax as he’s been in the ring with both Brothers of Destruction, and has held tag team gold with both of them.

Jericho says that he too has been in the ring with both of them and he isn’t scared.

Show tells his partner that if it comes down to them on Sunday he won’t hesitate to knock him out, then spooks him by turning the lights on and off on his way out of the room.

    Main Event Match

    Tag Team Match
    The Brothers of Destruction
    Vs.
    Jeri-Show

Kane and Taker entered to some decidedly dodgy cut-together entrance music, while two of The Deadman’s symbols were set alight on either side of the ramp.

I like Kane as a face, but the fact is he’s a perennial Tweener and I really wouldn’t be surprised if the Big Red Monster turned on his brother tonight, or at some point in the very near future.

The Brothers of Destruction gelled together almost instantly, wearing Jericho down and forcing him to tag in the 7ft Giant, who received pretty much the same treatment.

Jeri-Show finally took some level of control after Show made the blind tag and hit Kane with a Spear, leading to a period of isolation for the Big Red Monster.

I’ll personally be glad when Survivor Series is over, as I think the team of Jericho and Big Show still has a lot of life in it and I hope whatever happens doesn’t split them up just yet.

As Show dominated Kane some more Jericho headed over to the commentary team and demanded they explain to all the fans how well his partner is doing.

It was around this time that Kane finally countered and brought his brother into the match.

Taker beat the hell out of Jericho and locked in Hell’s Gate after Jericho had cleverly reversed the Chokeslam, but Show broke things up before his partner was forced to tag.

Things broke down completely here and after sending both of their opponents into the guard rails Kane and Taker stripped down the announce table and prepared to send Show through it, only for Jericho to make the save and draw the ire of the brothers.

Kane delivered a Chokeslam but then got hit with a Knockout Punch from Show, who then delivered a Chokeslam to The Undertaker.

As both Jericho and Taker lay prone in the centre of the ring, Show attempted to help his partner, only to be hit with a Codebreaker.

Jericho then grabbed the World Heavyweight Championship and headed up the ramp, pointing to the title and shouting ‘this is mine’ as the other participants of the match attempted to recover in the ring.

A very good match although the ending was a little weak, I’d have liked to have seen a pinfall at least.

    Match ends in a No-Contest.
