    The Smackdown Summary

    Segment 1

    Jericho & Edge

It’s more of the same from Chris Jericho to start Smackdown tonight.

I liked this pompous ‘better than you’ attitude Jericho assumed after turning heel, but it is getting just a little bit old now.

Jericho talks about how he has always defied the odds, beating The Rock and Stone Cold in the same night, beating Shawn Michaels in his ‘own’ Ladder Match and last week  defeating The Deadman, proving that he’s only human like everyone else.

After showing a clip he says that he’ll beat the odds once again on Sunday by claiming the World Heavyweight Championship in the Elimination Chamber.

Edge’s music cuts him off and the Royal Rumble winner makes his way to the ring.

After the chants from the crowd had died down Edge said it’s refreshing that Jericho recognises how important it is to beat The Undertaker, as he has before too.

Jericho smugly claims the victory was never in doubt because he’s the best in the world.

Edge says Jericho’s clip didn’t quite cover everything that happened, then shows what happened previously when he Speared the Deadman to assist the victory.

Back in the ring Edge claims an assist for the victory.

Jericho tells him to face whoever wins the Raw chamber match, because he’s planning on winning the Smackdown one and Edge should be very aware that ‘bad things happen’ when they are in the ring together.

Edge snaps at Jericho and the two end up squaring off, just as the lights in the arena begin to flicker.

After the momentary distraction Edge hits a Spear sending Jericho to the outside, where he decided to head up the ramp rather than battling any further.

The commentary played dumb regarding the light flickers, claiming it was ‘technical difficulties’. Seriously, how many times do they have to see Taker ‘interfering with the lights’ before they put 2 and 2 together?

    Match 1

    Singles Match
    Kane
    Vs.
    Dolph Ziggler

Matt Striker gets worse and worse each week.

Now I’m not having a go at him personally, as I assume most of the things he says he gets forced to say via his little earpiece, but still.

This week he exclusively announced that he’d just received word that Kane and Drew McIntyre will meet at Elimination Chamber for the Intercontinental Championship.

This exclusive piece of breaking news has been on WWE.Com since Monday at least.

Ziggler’s push seems to have stuttered to a standstill once again, as he spent the majority of this match taking a beating.

However, after Drew McIntyre emerged at the top of the ramp with a new theme tune (making me think someone completely new was about to enter) Ziggler was able to lock on a Sleeper that almost picked up the win.

Kane was able to make it to the ropes and moments later picked up the win with a Chokeslam.

McIntyre jumped in the ring and caught Kane with a kick to the gut, but failed to hit the ‘Future Shock’ as Kane powered out of it, sending the IC Champ fleeing up the ramp with his tail between his legs.

    Kane wins by Pinfall.

    Segment 2

    Rey Mysterio Interviewed

Backstage Rey is hanging out in the locker room when Josh Mathews approaches him.

He asks Rey about this Sunday (what else) and Rey takes the opportunity to talk about the beating he took from The Straight Edge Society last week.

He stakes his claim to the World Heavyweight Championship, saying (as everyone no doubt will) that he is going to win the belt in the Elimination Chamber.

After this a promo played for Ezekiel Jackson, saying he’d be debuting on Smackdown soon.

    Match 2

    Tag Team Match
    Cryme Tyme
    Vs.
    Trent Barretta & Caylen Croft

Speaking of ECW cast-offs, it looks like ‘The Dudebusters’ have also been drafted by Smackdown.

I still think a cool on-screen roster draft would have been far more entertaining than just having them show up randomly on whatever show they will be on.

This match basically consisted of Matt Striker and Todd Grisham building up a profile of the new tag team (they play video-games etc) while they dominated in the ring.

Barretta and Croft are good in the ring, there’s no doubting that. But there’s no substance to their characters/team at the minute.

They are Heels, they like video games, but since when has that been enough? Hopefully they’ll get written into a decent storyline, or get to cut a few good promos that’ll allow people to warm to them/hate them sufficiently.

Barretta & Croft looked to be in control practically the entire match, so it was a bit of a shock when Shad countered what would have been an impressive swinging DDT and picked up the win with an STO.

Good stuff from the new team here, I hope to god they get the time they need to mature and don’t get bogged down in 200 odd matches with Cryme Tyme like The Hart Dynasty did.

    Cryme Tyme win by Pinfall.

    Segment 3

    John Morrison Interviewed

Backstage in the ‘interview position’ Josh Mathews asks Morrison about ‘the most important week of his life’ which has seen his DVD released and will be his first shot at the World Heavyweight Championship.

He asks if his ankle will factor into things and Morrison says he’s been waiting too long for this shot and a tweaked ankle isn’t going to stop him taking it.

R-Truth shows up and asks Josh for a moment with his pal.

Truth growls something about putting on a show in the Elimination Chamber and going through Morrison if he has to, then says they should focus on The Straight Edge Society tonight.

Morrison makes a few pretty kiddy comments before the two head off for their match which is up next.

    Match 3

    Tag Team Match
    The Straight Edge Society
    Vs.
    John Morrison & R-Truth

Punk treated us to one of his sermons before this match.

He said that while he is a humble man even he realises that he’s the greatest thing ever to happen to the WWE Universe.

He tells the crowd that whether they like it or not, they are all a part of his crusade and he finds the lack of faith in those that stand in his way disturbing.

He makes the arbitrary claim that he’ll win the gold on Sunday (that’s 5 for 5 on that claim now) then tells the crowd he’s going to prove that he’s better than all of them tonight.

As the crowd break out into a ‘You Suck’ chant Punk talks about how he’s had the courage to stand out and that on Sunday his crusade will be burning bright as he becomes the 4-time Straight Edge Champion.

After R-Truth rapped his way to the ring with Morrison (and one over-zealous fan in the front row grabbed his hand and seemingly refused to let go) the match got underway.

The match itself was largely forgettable until about half way through, when a huge explosion at the top of the ramp shook the ring.

Fire began to shoot upwards from the staging as the four competitors in the ring looked on in shock.

After a commercial break the action resumed, with Punk and Gallows in complete control.

Gallows looks like a completely different animal to his former Festus persona. He seems to have upped his game and the results are clear to see.

He looked more agile, crisper and delivered some moves (a Backbreaker in particular) with expert precision.

The Straight Edge Society bossed the match almost completely following the mid-point fireworks, and a brief fightback from Morrison was soon quelled when he missed a kick and instead connected with the ringpost.

With his already ‘injured’ ankle damaged even moreso Punk began to focus on it, stomping and punching until the referee stopped the match.

After the bell Punk and Gallows dished out some more damage to their foes until Rey Mysterio hit the ring.

Rey momentarily stopped the attack until Punk got the better of him and with Gallows assistance hit him with a Knee to the throat from the top rope.

Punk assumed ‘The Saviour’ position in the ring with all his fallen rivals around him as the show cut to a Bret Hart promo.

The Straight Edge Society win by Forefit.

    Segment 4

    A Woman Scorned

Backstage Teddy Long is watching the footage of Vickie Guerrero getting covered in cottage cheese when she enters the room.

The two bicker until Mickie James enters and apologises for embarrassing Vickie.

Vickie then informs her that she’ll have to defend her Womens Championship next week against Michelle McCool, and she’ll be the special referee.

    Match 4

    Tag Team Match
Matt Hardy,The Great Khali & Maria (w/ Runjin Singh)
    Vs.
    The Harty Dynasty

Oh wow, practically a re-match of the complete dud contest from last week, we’re so lucky!

I’m just going to cut right to the chase here, things broke down, Maria tagged herself in by accident, Natalya took Maria’s head off and picked up the win.

I’m glad The Dynasty got a win, but I’m sad it came in such a non-match and a non-feud.

The Hart Dynasty win by Pinfall.

    Segment 4

    Trouble in Paradise

Backstage Maria is seemingly distraught that she cost her ‘sweetheart’ Matt and Khali the match.

Matt calms her down and sweet talks her, telling her that she’s close to being perfect.

Just as they are about to kiss Lay-Cool appear and do their dizzy clueless thing that they seem to have been kitted out with now.

They ask why neither Matt nor Maria seem to be able to make a relationship last, and why they also never seem to be able to win a match.

Maria pushes them and storms away, closely followed by Matt who tells them to grow up and get a life.

I’d be happy if they just went away.

    Main Event Match

    Singles Match
    Edge
    Vs.
    Batista

This is Edge’s first one on one match since returning from his 7-month absence, and should be a good indicator of just how rusty he is, or isn’t as the case may be.

Batista began the match by heading up the ramp, looking like he had decided to walk out once again.

Edge grabbed a microphone and stopped the referee from counting, then called The Animal spineless and challenged him to get back into the ring.

Batista turned around and headed back towards the ring, and the match finally got going.

Edge took control quickly and set up for the Spear, but Batista cleverly ducked it and rolled to the outside to recover.

When the action returned from commercials Batista had taken control, and began to set up the ring steps to Powerbomb Edge onto much in the way he did against Cena.

However, this time Edge was able to reverse the Batista Bomb and backdropped The Animal onto the steel.

Moments later Batista reversed Edge’s second attempt for a Spear, turning it into a huge Spinebuster.

Batista set up for the Bomb once again, but Edge countered into an Edgecution (his DDT) which grabbed a 2 count.

Batista then went for a Spear of his own, which Edge reversed into a Spear of HIS own, just as Taker’s gong hit and the lights cut out.

When they came back up The Undertaker had appeared in the ring, with his hand around Edge’s throat.

He delivered a Chokeslam to the Rated R Superstar while Batista fled to the back.

Taker then stood ominously at the top of the ramp and raised a single fist while Edge struggled to pull himself to his feet in the ring.

Just as it looked like the show was over Jericho appeared in the ring and drilled Edge with a CodeBreaker, then stared up at The Deadman as the show went off the air.

    Edge wins by Disqualification.
