    The Smackdown Summary

    Opening Segment

    Teddy Long Arrives

After a promo video showing The Undertaker being screwed over at Breaking Point, a limo pulls into the arena and Teddy Long emerges in a crisp blue suit.

As the boo’s echo around the arena Teddy calls over a selection of security guards who flank him as he begins to make his way through the back.

Teddy tells them to stay alert and the screen fades into the opening video for Smackdown.

    Segment 2

    Batista is Back on Smackdown

Batista’s music hits and the crowd explode, I mean you’d have thought The Rock just walked out onto the entrance ramp or something the way they reacted.

After roaring his way around ringside, slapping hands with J.R, Todd Grisham and anyone else that was close by, Batista finally made his way into the ring and began to talk.

He outlined that his move to Smackdown was not part of a draft, trade or anything else, but rather because his contract expired on Raw and he chose to move to Smackdown of his own volition, claiming it was the A show… Not sure I quite agree there Dave, although it has come a long way this year.

It was at this point that Jericho decided to interrupt things, swaggering his way to the ring then sarcastically welcoming The Animal back to Smackdown when he got there.

Jericho then said that Batista makes him sick, likening him to the other ‘injury prone loser’; Edge. He accuses Batista of begging the hypocritical fans for cheers just because he’s managed to return from injury.

Jericho claims he is the true face of Smackdown and a lot has changed on the blue brand since he left and he is now ‘the man’.

Batista says he was always taught that ‘to be the man, you have to beat the man’, then wrapped up the segment by informing Jericho they will have plenty of time to catch up in their match tonight, before hitting him with a Spinebuster and leaving the ring.

A few moments later Jericho stormed into the locker room and began reprimanding The Big Show for not coming to his aid.

Show reminds Jericho that he had told him to stay backstage as he wanted to confront Batista on his own.

Jericho then says that is exactly what he is going to do tonight, saying he’s beaten Batista before on his own and he will do it again.

    Match 1

    Singles Match
    John Morrison
    Vs.
    Mike Knox

Dolph Ziggler joined the commentary team for this match and opened his exchange with the commentary team in practically the same way Zack Ryder did on Superstars, telling them they were welcome for him joining them.

Knox continued his ‘disturbed kinesiologist’ gimmick again by way of a promo video playing while he entered. This time he talked about restless legs syndrome, saying there is currently no cure, I don’t really get the link to the upcoming match either.

Morrison began the match in complete control, hitting a selection of bicycle kicks and an impressive springboard Moonsault from the apron to the outside as the show cut to commercials.

In true WWE style when things came back from the break, Mike Knox was firmly in control.

J.R asked Ziggler if he had any regrets about his poor treatment of Hall of Famer Pat Patterson. Dolph responded by saying ‘so what’ to his Hall of Fame status and said that Pat had already had his run, now it’s Dolph Ziggler’s turn.

Morrison regained control of the match with an impressive Spinning DDT after Knox had worked his back for an extended period of time.

Morrison wrapped up the match moments later with the Flying Chuck/Starship Pain combo, another great outing for the Intercontinental Champion.

After the match Morrison grabbed a microphone and continued the ‘Mr Ziggles’ thing from last week.

    John Morrison wins by Pinfall.

    Segment 3

    Scott Armstrong Interviewed

Many of you out there are probably thinking the same thing; who the hell is Scott Armstrong.

Well, he’s the blonde haired referee who officiated the C.M Punk Vs. The Undertaker match at Breaking Point.

After footage of the Montreal Screwjob Part 2, Josh Mathews (who else) got the privilege of asking the referee why he did what he did.

Armstrong said he’d been asking himself the same question since Breaking Point, but the fact of the matter is unless you own the business, you answer to a higher power who does own the business and he was simply following the orders of someone ‘much higher than himself’.

Armstrong plays the ‘family to feed card’ then says he was asked to do something that made him sick to his stomach before, during and after the match and it isn’t something he is proud of, but he did what he had to do to keep his job.

    Interesting, the plot thickens.

    Match 2

    Divas Match
    Melina
    Vs.
    Michelle McCool

So Michelle is finally back in the ring tonight. She limped her way down to the ring although seemed pretty light on her feet as soon as the bell rang, dodging Melina and anchoring herself between the ropes.

McCool continued to wrestle without any signs of injury, only playing on the damaged knee when it suited her, usually to cause a break in the match when things weren’t going her way.

Melina looked to be coasting towards an important victory over the Women’s champion, but McCool put the breaks on with a huge kick from the supposedly damaged leg.

McCool then began to set up the Faith Breaker, but Melina was able to reverse it into her so far un-named finishing manoeuvre and pick up the victory.

A decent diva’s match for once, now if they could only slap a believable storyline on it we might be in business.

    Melina wins by Pinfall.

    Segment 4

    Teddy Meets Vince

Backstage Teddy Long is pacing his office, telling his security to stay vigilant as The Undertaker can emerge from anywhere.

Vince McMahon walks in and says he wants to chat to Long, excusing the security.

Vince asks Long where his picture is, then moves on to the other things Teddy promised last week.

Batista moving to Smackdown earned Teddy some praise from the boss, as did the surprising finish to Breaking Point, although Vince says he thinks he is entitled to an explanation as to why he double crossed The Undertaker.

Long says Mr. McMahon told him to entertain the fans but Vince cuts him off and says he still wants an explanation and the fans deserve one too so he’d better go out to the ring and give one.

Vince then tells Long he’s made a big mistake and asks him if he has any idea what The Undertaker is going to do to him, prompting Teddy to leave the office and head to the ring.

    Segment 5

    Teddy’s Explanation

After yet another video of Breaking Point Teddy Long is in the ring surrounded by security.

He starts by welcoming Batista back to Smackdown, but even name-dropping The Animal isn’t enough to get the crowd on side and they continue to boo and hiss.

Long says he has come to the ring to make an admission, then comes clean and says that the end of Breaking Point was pre-planned to prevent The Undertaker from becoming World Heavyweight Champion.

Long says he’s not going to stand out here and say he’s proud of his actions, because he isn’t. He says he’s not going to say he isn’t afraid of The Undertaker, because he is.

He then tries to pass some of the blame, saying the referee Scott Armstrong and C.M Punk are also involved then says he’d like to tell the fans the reason he did what he did.

Teddy then also plays the ‘family to feed’ card, just as Scott Armstrong did, saying he only did what he did to save his job.

He then apologised to the WWE Universe, the attending audience and The Undertaker for his actions, saying he hoped Taker can find it in his heart to forgive him.

I don’t know what to take from that, although it did seem to make out that someone higher up than Long didn’t want The Undertaker to be World Heavyweight Champion.

Long and his security made their way through to the back, escorting him safely into his limo.

Once inside Teddy told the driver to leave, but he refused to move.

Anyone care to guess who the driver is? That’s right; The Undertaker.

Taker told Long to buckle up as the lighting inside the limo turned purple and smoke began to fill the back. Taker drove off as Long begged for help and tried in vain to escape.

    Segment 6

    C.M Punk on Breaking Point

Tonight certainly has been a segment-fest so far, let’s see what Punk has to say about Breaking Point.

Punk kicks off by saying ‘I told you so’ and talks about how he’s been saying that quite a bit recently, listing all his claims that have been proven right despite a lack of faith from the crowd.

Punk says he hasn’t come out to crow about being the only person ever to make The Undertaker tap out (I’m sure that isn’t true, and it didn’t happen anyway) but rather to call out Taker and say ‘I told you so’ face to face.

Seeing as Taker is now AWOL with Teddy Long, Punk moves onto the crowd, admitting that he has been preaching to them in recent weeks but only because they NEED preaching to.

After 10 minutes of his usual crowd-bashing, this time on the subject of inadequacies and self medication, Punk called the crowd a bunch of liars, then deemed himself a prophet who makes good on all his claims.

Another solid heel promo from Punk although it seemed a bit out of place when all anyone cared about was where Taker and Long are.

    Match 3

    Tag Team Match
    Cryme Tyme (w/Eve)
    Vs.
    The Hart Dynasty (w/Natalya)

The Hart Dynasty got a good reception due to WWE Shows still coming out of Canada this week.

I like The Hart Dynasty a lot, I even quite like Cryme Tyme and when you put them together they do have good matches, but it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere.

Most rivalries have some form of progression, even Kane and Khali had a kind of story arc to it with the inclusion of Runjin Singh (there’s yet another match between them coming up in this show by the way, I’ll talk about how wrong that is when we get to it) but CT and THD seem to have been facing each other for months on and off now without any real reasoning.

I’d love to see Kid and Smith get a shot at the Tag Titles, but as long as Jeri-Show have them it seems unlikely it will happen, as Heel Vs. Heel matches are notoriously hard to get the audiences interested in and neither of these teams would benefit from a face turn right now.

As I said before these two teams usually put on a good match and this one was no exception. The Hart Dynasty controlled the majority of the match and although Cryme Tyme made a valiant attempt at fighting back, The Hart Dynasty picked up the win after a distraction from Natalya, a big Kick from DH Smith and a very impressive finisher from Tyson Kidd.

The Hart Dynasty win by Pinfall.

    Segment 7

    Melina Takes The Blame

The segments just keep coming on Smackdown tonight.

Melina walks into the Divas dressing room and finds the walls plastered with the picture Layla took of Ziggler and McCool last week.

She starts tearing them down but only gets about 6 of 100 before Maria walks in.

Maria see’s the picture and Melina starts saying she’s sorry. Maria says she’s sure there is a reasonable explanation and if Melina suspected something she should have come to her with it rather than going to the lengths of plastering these photo’s all over.

Melina tries to explain that she had nothing to do with it but Maria said she was done with their friendship and walked out.

    Match 4

    Singles Match
    Kane
    Vs.
    The Great Khali (w/Runjin Singh)

Just when we thought there was nothing left to flog out of this dead horse, the Smackdown writers decide to give it one more go.

The story goes that Khali feels there is unfinished business between the two after losing to Kane at Breaking Point, of course I mean why wouldn’t he think that?

Khali goes for the Punjabi Plunge early but Kane rolls to the outside. Khali follows and gets dropped with a steel chair, causing the disqualification.

Oh god does that mean this is going to go on even longer?

After the bell Kane dragged Khali over to the ring steps and placed his leg on the lower half, before driving the upper half down onto it numerous times.

Khali didn’t seem to flinch (the steps were going nowhere near his leg so he had no reason to) until after Kane had left and Singh had come to check on him.

As the old adage goes, Khali won the match but I bet he doesn’t feel much like a winner right about now.

The Great Khali wins by Disqualification.

    Segment 8

    Drew McIntyre Strikes Again

Wow, Segment 8, looks like they are going for double figures tonight!

As Charlie Haas waits in the ring for his opponent R-Truth, Drew McIntyre makes his way out instead. He informs the crowd that R-Truth has been involved in a backstage accident and is unfit to compete, therefore Charlie Haas is the winner by default.

McIntyre shakes his hand, then hits him with the Double Arm DDT.

    Main Event Match

    Singles Match
    Chris Jericho
    Vs.
    Batista

Batista started his return to Smackdown match well until Jericho began working on his knee before slamming him into the announce table, taking full control of the match in the process.

Jericho continued to dominate for a long period of the match, locking on a Sleeper and bringing things to a complete standstill until Batista exploded back into life with a Side Slam.

Moments later Batista avoided the Lionsault and hit a Spinebuster, then began setting up for The Batista Bomb but Jericho was able to battle out and again targeted the knee.

Jericho went to the top rope but Batista caught him with a Clothesline as he flew, then went for a Spear but Jericho was able to avoid it and roll Batista up for a 2 count with an assist from the ropes.

Some great back and forth from these two guys.

Jericho locked in the Walls of Jericho but Batista used his power to break free, then caught Jericho as he went for the Code Breaker and managed to reverse it into a Batista Bomb to make his return to the blue brand a triumphant one.

In the back Josh Mathews asked The Big Show for a response. Show said he got lucky and said if The Animal gets into the ring with him next week his luck would run out.

    Batista wins by Pinfall.
