    The Smackdown Summary

    Opening Segment

    Team Smackdown

Before we get started, tonight’s show and this edition of The Smackdown Summary is dedicated to the memory of ‘Captain’ Lou Albano who sadly passed away this week.

Albano was a great performer and one of the most successful managers in WWE history, but he will more than likely be remembered most for his involvement in the ‘Rock n’ Wrestling’ angle that brought WWE a lot of it’s mainstream popularity in the mid-80′s.

The show kicked off tonight with Michael Cole standing in for Good Ol’ JR, so it looks like The Informant was indeed correct in this week’s début edition of ‘The Informer‘.

Teddy Long then appeared and talked about Bragging Rights, before introducing Smackdown’s Team Captain; Chris Jericho.

Jericho begins by saying that for once Teddy Long has made a good decision and announced him as team captain.

He then moves onto John Cena’s possible return to Smackdown, saying that things have changed on the Blue Brand and if he wants to come back he will have to go through him.

After criticising DX and destroying a copy of their new book (which was actually a nice little disguised plug) The Big Red Machine interrupted and made his way to the ring.

Once there Kane told Jericho they need to talk because he is now assuming co-captaincy of the ‘Smackdown 7′.

Jericho says he was thinking the same thing and Kane wraps things up by saying Team Raw can go up in flames, before setting off his pyros.

Hmm, possibly a decent push for Kane at last.

    Match 1

    Team Smackdown Qualifying Match
    Finlay
    Vs.
    Mike Knox
    Vs.
    Dolph Ziggler

I’m sure all our regular readers will know who I want to pick up the victory here, but I honestly wouldn’t be disappointed if Knox made it onto Team Smackdown, as despite hating his gimmick I think he’s got potential as a powerhouse.

Ziggler tried to build bridges with Knox early in the match, but the big man decided against it and made his intentions clear, knocking both men to the floor and taking the upper hand.

After periods of strong offence from Ziggler and Finlay, Knox again took control and looked to be in like for the win when Finlay drilled him with the Shaleighle.

Finlay made the cover but the opportunistic Dolph Ziggler slid in from the outside and broke it up before covering Knox himself for the victory and the place in the ‘Smackdown 7′.

Dolph Ziggler wins a place on Team Smackdown by Pinfall.

    Match 2

    Team Smackdown Tag Qualifying Match
    Cryme Tyme
    Vs.
    The Hart Dynasty

Oh joy, Cryme Tyme Vs. The Hart Dynasty again.

I’m not even going to dignify ANOTHER match between them with coverage.

Go read some of the older matches if you want to know what happened during the match.

Cryme Tyme picked up the win in a relatively short match and I can’t say as I’m surprised, the ‘Smackdown 7′ desperately needed some faces to even the balance.

I’d have much rather seen The Hart Dynasty given a chance, but there you go.

Cryme Tyme win places on Team Smackdown by Pinfall.

    Segment 2

    The Diva Division Hots Up

Backstage in Teddy’s office Jericho explains to Michelle McCool how important it is for Smackdown to win all three Smackdown Vs. Raw matches at Bragging Rights and asks if he can rely on her.

McCool tells him that she can before Mickey James enters and thanks Teddy for trading her to the blue brand. She then tells Jericho that if he wants someone reliable he should try her as she has beaten every diva on Raw.

McCool goes to leave and bumps into The Glamazon; Beth Phoenix, who tells her that she shouldn’t plan on keeping the Womens Championship for too long.

    Segment 3

    More Montreal

Backstage Vince is talking to ‘someone’ on his cell about Bragging Rights.

C.M Punk appears and requests that the boss cancels the fatal 4 way at Bragging Rights and gives him his 1 on 1 rematch against Taker for the title.

Vince says that he can’t cancel the fatal 4 way, but he did like the idea of a ‘Montreal Rematch’ with Scott Armstrong officiating and Teddy Long at ringside.

After dropping more hints that he might have had something to do with screwing Taker out of the title, Mr. McMahon books the 1 on 1 Submission match for the main event of next week’s Smackdown.

    Match 3

    Team Smackdown Qualification Match
    Eric Escobar (w/Vickie Guerrero)
    Vs.
    Matt Hardy

Before the match Vickie Guerrero emerged to one of the loudest chorus of boos I’ve heard in a long while.

She introduces her ‘new boyfriend’ Eric Escobar and accompanies him to ringside.

It was obvious from the crowd reactions that the creative team’s plan is working well, pairing a well established and much hated manager with an unknown guy gets him instant heat.

I’d heard a lot about Escobar before this match and I’d hoped to finally see what all the hype was about, but this match didn’t really give any clues to the talent he possesses.

Matt Hardy controlled the bout almost entirely until Vickie Guererro began to feign an ankle injury on the apron, distracting Hardy long enough for Escobar to slam him into the ringpost and roll him up for the 3 count, with a handful of tights just to emphasise his heelishness.

I guess we’ll see what he’s capable of at Bragging Rights, unless he’s used as a jokey quick elimination.

Eric Escobar wins a place on Team Smackdown by Pinfall.

    Segment 4

    The Dirt Sheet

I have to admit that I didn’t really follow ‘The Dirt Sheet’ back when it was the hottest segment in town.

I didn’t really watch ECW back then, but I understand it was quite the show.

The ring has been kitted out half blue, half red and The Miz & John Morrison sit on their respective sides.

After Morrison pokes fun at The Miz, asking if he got his title belt from WWEShop they get down to Bragging Rights.

The Miz says that he was the successful half of their former tag team and continues to be.

Miz & Morrison then outlined a slew of ‘teams’ where one had gone on to superstardom while the other had faded into obscurity.

Mork & Mindy, Bill & Ted and The Rockers were amongst the examples, leading them to argue about who was the ‘Marty Jannetty’ between the two of them.

They argued some more and Morrison decided to involve the crowd, asking them if they thought The Miz was ‘husky’ (which apparently means fat).

The Miz responded by saying that he would prove himself at Bragging Rights, but wouldn’t face Morrison tonight on a second rate show, in a second rate state.

Morrison likened Raw to ‘Saturday Night Live’ and after some more back and forth the two squared up and looked set to brawl, until The Miz backed off and left with his title belt.

Didn’t the dirt sheet used to be funny?

    Match 4

    Team Smackdown Qualification Match
    R-Truth
    Vs.
    Drew McIntyre

With the push Drew McIntyre has been on recently, and after the prediction made in The Weekly Informer this week, I fully expected McIntyre to be in Team Smackdown, even before this match was announced.

So it came as no surprise when Drew got the better of R-Truth once again, this time by way of a count out.

McIntyre spent the majority of the match working over Truth’s back and never really let him get into the swing of things.

The Scotsman put the final nail in the coffin by way of a brutal Leg Sweep that sent R-Truth’s back down into the steel steps, leaving him unable to make it back into the ring before a count of 10.

So that’s Team Smackdown filled up.

I have to say that on paper at least Team Raw look to be the stronger, mainly down to the fact that Smackdown have two almost unheard of guys and a tag team that has had (at best) very limited success over their WWE tenure.

Drew McIntyre wins a place on Team Smackdown by Pinfall.

    Segment 5

    Rey and Batista

Backstage Rey and Batista chat some more about facing each other at Bragging Rights.

Batista says he doesn’t feel right about taking on his ‘little brother’ and Rey jokingly accuses him of being scared.

They agree that once they step in the ring they will put their friendship aside in pursuit of the World Heavyweight Championship.

    Segment 6

    A Message from The Undertaker

After footage of Breaking Point is shown The Undertaker appears somewhere in the bowels of the building (in other words it was a pre-recorded bit and Taker probably wasn’t even in the arena).

Taker talked about the match next week, but said nothing particularly interesting unfortunately.

He told Punk that at Bragging Rights he will take his soul, but next week on Smackdown he will give him his Last Rights.

It was then confirmed that Taker and Punk will meet next week in a Submission match for the Heavyweight title, with Scott Armstrong in the stripes and Teddy Long at ringside.

    Main Event Match

    Singles Match
    Batista
    Vs.
    Rey Mysterio

I know I said last weeks main event between Batista and Punk was probably one of the most boring I could have thought of, but this one comes pretty close too.

With Jericho and Punk both not being used tonight, I’m sure they could have made this main event a little more interesting.

Things started off pretty friendly, with Batista countering some of Mysterio’s fast paced offence but not capitalising on it like he would if he was in there against a rival.

However, things quickly got serious as Rey went for the 619 and seemingly angered The Animal who hit back with a brutal Spear.

Controversy reigned at the conclusion of the match as Rey picked up ( you’ll never guess what) an upset victory, rolling Batista up after countering the Batista Bomb.

Despite The Animal clearly getting his shoulder up before the 3 count, the referee awarded the victory to Mysterio.

As Batista exited up the ramp C.M Punk appeared through the crowd and hit Mysterio with the GTS, before fleeing quickly as Batista lumbered back towards the ring.

The show wrapped up as Batista helped Mysterio back to his feet, indicating once again that there is no animosity between the two.

    Rey Mysterio wins by Pinfall.
