The Smackdown Summary
Match 1
Singles Match
Kofi Kingston
Vs.
‘Dashing’ Cody Rhodes
Straight into action tonight on Smackdown, and a second glance at Cody’s ‘Virtual Mirror’.
He’s also got new entrance music which I failed to mention last week.
It goes on about smoke and mirrors, which I didn’t really think applied to ‘Dashing’, but there you go, it’s marginally better than the country twang he used to have.
For most of the match Striker and Grisham talked about how badly Kingston got beaten by The Nexus on NXT, and how it might affect him come Money in the Bank.
I really hope Kingston doesn’t have a legitimate niggle that will stop him giving 100% at MitB, because I’d hoped he wuold be the one to steal the show on Sunday.
The match was going all well and good until Kane’s pyro lit up the top of the ramp and The Big Red Machine made his way to the ring.
Both Cody and Kofi tried to fight him off, but to no avail.
After chokeslamming the pair of them Kane grabbed a microphone…
Match ended in a No Contest.
Segment 1
Kane’s Breaking News
What news could possibly be so important that it was worth interrupting a great match for, I hear you ask…
Well, Kane’s earth shattering news is that there is going to be a ‘bludgeoning’ tonight, because Jack Swagger is a liar and 100% guilty of attacking The Undertaker.
He finishes by saying that Swagger will pay for his sins, and he’ll enjoy extracting vengeance on the condemned.
Segment 2
Rey Mysterio Interviewed
After having his ankle taped up by a trainer Rey Mysterio briefly spoke to Josh Mathews.
Josh asked Rey how his ankle is and after revealing that his injury is pretty serious, says that he’s going to go out to the ring tonight and forfeit his title.
Mathews asked if he was serious and after a long and rather unnecessary pause Rey sprang to his feet and said of course he isn’t, and that with the help of the medical team he’ll do everything he can to keep hold of the gold at Money in the Bank.
Segment 3
Swagger’s Alibi
Elsewhere backstage Jack Swagger is on his cell phone to his ‘alibi’, which I’m betting is his father.
He tells him to get to the arena as soon as possible because he wants to put the whole Kane thing behind him so he can focus on the World title.
Match 2
Singles Match
Drew McIntyre
Vs.
Christian
This whole Money in the Bank situation is throwing up a lot of fairly high profile singles matches taking place on the televised shows.
However, as I’ve said so many times before a good singles match is just as much about the build-up as it is about the quality of Superstars involved, and pretty much all these bouts are missing that extra something that comes from a rivalry or a slow-burn build.
That being said, this match was just about as perfect as it could have been.
Christian’s high flying really set the tone for Sunday’s PPV, and Drew McIntyre finally wrestled a match to the potential I knew he had.
He displayed tidy ringwork (aside from a badly botched backbreaker which saw Christian’s neck snap across his knee), sold Christian’s attacks to near perfection and wrestled with a pronounced mean streak that could easily make him the top heel on the brand within a year.
McIntyre picked up the win with a FutureShock after a thumb to the eye, and although the match had been going for quite a long time, I was kinda disappointed when it ended.
Pay Per View quality for sure.
Drew McIntyre wins by Pinfall.
Segment 4
Straight Edge Snooze
After a video package showing C.M Punk’s success in Money in the Bank matches The Straight Edge Society are introduced in the ring.
Punk goes on about how good he is and how much better he is than everyone else until The Big Show’s music hits and the 7ft giant makes his way to the ring carrying two ladders; one big and one small.
Once in the ring he sets the big one up, completely ignoring Punk who repeatedly asked him what was going on.
Show said that Punk’s talking was sending everyone to sleep, and he was out here because of Money in the Bank and to entertain the fans.
Show says on Sunday the fans will get to see the first ever Money in the Bank match with a ‘walking, talking fire-breathing giant’ involved.
Punk said he couldn’t wait for Show to climb up to the top of the ladder and ‘do a 450 off the top of it’, and by 450 he means all clumbsy 450lbs of Show burbling down the ladder and through the ring.
He takes the S.E.S to the outside of the ring and tells Show to entertain them by talking about Money in the Bank, donning a commentary headset for the occasion.
Show says that he has no faith in the ‘industrial strength’ ladder that he has set up in the ring, but then decides to climb it anyway while being jeered on by the fans.
However, when he put his weight on the first rung it crumpled.
Show decided that as he’s so big he probably doesn’t need a regular sized ladder, but after setting up the smaller one realised it wouldn’t be any good either.
He said that as a giant he’s used to breaking everything, so he scoured the country high and low, and eventually found someone who would make him…
The biggest ladder I’ve ever seen in my life.
He says that it weighs over 350lbs and has a 2000lb weight limit.
He sets up the gargantuan ladder but before he climbs to the top Punk chimes in and says that the situation reminds him of King Kong.
He reminds everyone that had Kane not falsely accused and injured him, he would be the one winning Money in the Bank.
While Punk distracted Show, Luke Gallows and The Masked Guy circled the ring and jumped him, leading to a beat down.
However, as Punk climbed up the ladder the giant began to stir.
He cleared house then headed up the ladder behind Punk, de-masking him atop the huge structure.
This segment was actually a lot better than my write-up gave it credit for, and I personally can’t wait to see this ladder involved in the MitB match.
Also, Punk’s head looked pretty clean shaven, despite the fact he’s been wearing a mask for like two months now.
Segment 5
Still Not Here?
Backstage Jack Swagger is still on the cell to his unknown alibi, who is apparently bringing evidence to the arena for him.
He tells Swagger his driver is lost, but he’s never let him down before and he’ll be there soon.
Match 3
Mixed Tag Match
Trent Barretta & Layla (w/Caylen Croft)
Vs.
Chris Masters & Kelly Kelly (w/Tiffany)
Things are getting a bit silly in the Divas division now.
About 2 minutes into this match Rosa Mendes emerged from the back and skipped down to ringside, literally.
Caylen Croft then called Trent Baretta over and began performing rope duties while Rosa jumped it.
Layla began screaming at her partner to get back up on the apron, but before he could Chris Masters sprinted around the ring and took out both members of The Dudebusters while Kelly hit the K2 in the ring to grab the 3.
After the bell Rosa made her exit, looking a little worried that her plan to impress Layla had backfired.
Chris Masters & Kelly Kelly win by Pinfall.
Main Event Match
Singles Match
Matt Hardy
Vs.
Dolph Ziggler (w/ Vickie Guerrero)
Dolph Ziggler in the main event? About time too!
Before even getting to the ring Matt Hardy cut a promo about how comfortable he is around Ladder Matches.
He said that when he wins the Smackdown Money in the Bank match he will cash it in the very same night regardless of who is the Champion, and will leave with the gold.
This was another good outing for Dolph, and undoubtedly featured the best part of the show when Matt Striker inadvertently referred to Ziggler fans as ‘Dolphins’, which led to some healthy ribbing from Grisham.
Hardy could have won this match 3 or 4 times over, were it not for the tenacity of Ziggler and the inclusion of Vickie Guerrero, but Ziggler eventually bagged a main event win with the Zig-Zag.
Kelly Kelly wins by Pinfall.
Closing Segment
Did He or Didn’t He?
Before the final commercials of the evening a limo arrived with what I presume to be Jack Swagger’s father in it, oh and a package too.
Swagger hugs the guy and hands the package to a runner, telling him to rush it to the production truck.
After the break Swagger brings his father to the ring while the commentary team ponder just who he could be, like it isn’t as obvious as the nose on Triple H’s face.
Swagger babbled on about having a good upbringing and said he would clear the good family name of Swagger tonight by proving he had nothing to do with the attack on The Undertaker.
He introduced his father (big surprise there) to a fairly subdued reaction from the crowd, then showed a selection of stills from the memorial day in question when The Undertaker was attacked, showing The Swaggers winning various contests.
All the images were laughably staged, probably on purpose.
Kane’s second pyro of the night interrupted proceedings and once in the ring Kane told Swagger that he didn’t believe a word of it.
Swagger continued to show the farcically staged pictures but Kane quickly clamped his hand around Swagger’s throat.
As daddy Swagger pleaded with Kane to release his hold Swagger seized the opportunity and drilled him with the microphone, before applying the devastating AnkleLock.
Mysterio hobbled to the ring and delivered a 619 to make the save, then Kane set up for a double Chokeslam.
Swagger escaped, then turned away in disgust on the outside as The Big Red Machine drove his 64 year old father into the canvas.
Afterwards Swagger exploded into a fit of rage, but refused to get back into the ring, instead heading up the ramp as Kane delivered a Tombstone and the show came to an end.
