The Smackdown Summary
Segment 1
Teddy’s Introduction
General Manager Teddy Long is the first person in the ring tonight, with the Intercontinental Championship draped over his shoulder.
He didn’t say an awful lot, other than introducing the participants, but I thought this would be a good oppertunity to bring you yet another snippet of information from The Informant:
As many people will already know last week Drew McIntyre received the ‘You’re fired’ treatment on Smackdown.
This was, of course, just an on-screen firing and I stand by my previous high praise for the Sadistic Scot.
The reason for this on-screen departure is due to the fact that McIntyre and WWE Diva Tiffany got married in Vegas the previous week, and have been given time off to ‘consummate their vows’, if you catch my drift.
Tiffany clearly wasn’t worthy of a storyline exit, but with the strap being on ‘The Chosen One’s shoulder, they had to get him out of the picture somehow.
Expect a return for McIntyre in the next couple of weeks, where he will claim he never officially lost the belt and will go on to feud with whoever is holding the gold at that point.

Match 1
Intercontinental Championship Match
Christian
Vs.
Kofi Kingston
Why oh why was this match not booked onto the Over the Limit card?!
Over the Limit is looking particularly dire, and with it being on Sky Box Office over here in the UK I have to admit, if it wasn’t for bringing the results to the WWEBlog fans, I probably wouldn’t waste my time buying it.
This match, with a stipulation (my personal choice would have been Ladder) could really have made it worth the cost, and while I respect that they want to push Smackdown and I love the fact a match of this standard (and the two semi-finals last week) is on a weekly show, I just think it was a no-brainer, with it being so close to a PPV that severely needs a shot of adrenaline.
Hell, if it was me I’d have had the WHOLE tournament at the PPV, like King of the Ring back in the good old days.
Anyway, back to the action in the ring!
Kingston and Christian are very similar in a lot of ways, which played out perfectly in this match and kept things fresh, as you were never quite sure who would hit what next.
I struggled to take my eyes off the action for very long, because for pretty much the whole match it was ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ kind of stuff.
Christian avoided the Trouble in Paradise, Kingston avoided the KillSwitch, both men hit each other with the ‘Fulcrum Prison Blues’ (why that name never caught on I’ll never know) and Christian kicked out of the S.O.S.
But in the end it was The Ghanaian Sensation who pulled out the victory and claimed the title, hitting the Trouble in Paradise on the second time of asking to grab the 1..2..3.
After the match Teddy Long presented Kofi with the title and Christian shook his opponents hand in a show of much deserved respect.
However, moments later Drew McIntyre’s music hit and the Sadistic Scot walked to the ring in a perfect white suit (perhaps the one he wore for his wedding, who can say?)
McIntyre took a letter from his pocket and slammed it into Teddy Long’s chest. The G.M read it and threw it to the floor, before removing the title from Kofi’s shoulder and returning it to Drew McIntyre.
Interesting developments, and the heat generated for McIntyre as he walked up the ramp holding the title in the air was immense.
It looks like The Informant might have been spot on, if not a little out with his dates.
Kingston Vs. McIntyre is sure to take place soon enough.
Kofi Kingston wins by Pinfall but does NOT become the Intercontinental Champion.
Segment 2
The Letter
After the commercials Matt Striker left the announce position and read the letter, which he had recovered from the ring during the break.
I won’t relay it word for word, but the general gist was that Teddy’s ‘abuse of power’ last week was an abhoration and Drew McIntyre has been returned to the active roster WITH his Intercontinental Championship.
The letter was signed by Chairman of the Board Vince McMahon.
So much for the ‘Mr. McMahon’ character being dropped.
Segment 3
Swagger Shipping
Backstage a crew of delivery men are shown unpacking a truck full of boxes while Jack Swagger oversees the action.
He continually tells them to be careful with what they are doing, and talks about how it is ‘a life’s work’.
Looks like we’re in for more stories of Swagger’s past tonight, only this time with props.
Match 2
Singles Match
Shad
Vs.
Jesse Guyver
No, don’t be fooled into thinking you’re reading the Superstars Recap, this IS Smackdown.
Shad is the latest guy to be given the ‘Local Talent’ treatment, presumably because he didn’t come out of the rivalry with JTG as well as the creative team had expected.
I couldn’t find anything about Guyver, which is probably for the best because I didn’t have an awful lot of time before Shad picked up the 3 with the Shad’s Takin Over.
I don’t know what the creative team think we get out of this. I guess it’s meant to make these guys (Kozlov, Jackson, Shad, Vance Archer etc) look dominant and unbeatable, but to me it just makes them look weak when they could be taking on an established roster member rather than a jobber.
Shad wins by Pinfall.
Match 3
Tag Team Match
JTG & M.V.P
Vs.
The Dudebusters
Oh man, I really hope this team isn’t perminent.
If it is you’ve gotta feel for JTG.
He’s just come out of a fairly unsuccessful tag team, but a pairing with genuine chemistry, who came into the WWE together under the same gimmick and displayed a decent level of teamwork.
Now he’s been shoved into a makeshift team with another guy who hasn’t done anything of note for like two years, with no real bond other than their names are made up of initials.
Sadly it looks like this might be the case, as although The Dudebusters put on a very good performance, they ultimately lost to The Play of the Day, aka PayDirt.
JTG & M.V.P win by Pinfall.
Segment 4
Punk Ponders
Backstage Punk is talking with the S.E.S.
He tells them that they hurt his feelings last week by doubting him, but he understands that the doubt came from Rey Mysterio and his poisonous mind games, and the Ultimate Underdog may as well have puffed smoke in their face or thrown pills down their neck.
So tonight he’s going to ‘get the poison out’ by going to the ring alone tonight, to prove just why he was the one that was worthy of saving them.
Then, on Sunday they will begin Rey’s redemption.
I’ll put money down right now that tonight’s match doesn’t take place, or if it does it’s very short and ends in very cloudy circumstances.
Segment 5
Swagger Facts (With Props!)
During the commercials some stagehands had filled the ring with a selection of huge trophies, covered pictures and rather curiously… a scrabble board.
Swagger enters the ring and after doing a couple of push-ups explains that he’s had his father ship up all his trophies so he can share them with the WWE Universe and The Big Show.
After another commercial break (which Swagger talked through) he talked about his dad’s greatest achievement; fathering a picture perfect son.
He reveals a picture of him as a child and tells the WWE Universe that he’s better than all their children.
He talked about (amongst other things) being an eagle-scout, being homecoming king of his high-school (at which point he adorned his head with a crown), taking a 32 year old brain surgeon and ‘perfect 10′ to his Prom, being an Oklahoma Sooner, being a qualified lifeguard, being a national scrabble champion and having a sandwich (‘The Swaggie’) named after him at the famous Perry Deli.
This went on for a LONG time before The Big Show finally interrupted, much to the sheer joy of the crowd.
Show says he came out to the ring because he was impressed, then began picking things up, which really upset the World Heavyweight Champion.
Swagger told Show to keep his ‘fat Vienna sausage fingers’ off his things, and Show said he wasn’t here to break anything, he just wanted to look at stuff.
He went to put down the Scrabble trophy but dropped it and stood on it instead, prompting Jack to ask him to leave as the fans want to hear him talk some more.
After the booing had died down Show turned his attention to the huge Vianese Dancing Trophy that Swagger had previously talked about.
Show said he’d been asked to do Dancing withthe Stars once, then picked it up and began dancing around the ring with it, before ‘accidentally’ slamming the top into the canvas and snapping it off.
Swagger erupted into a fit of rage and tried to attack the giant, but Show got the better of him and after dumping him to the outside began to smash the crap out of all of the All American American’s stuff.
With pretty much everything destroyed or punted into the crowd Show picked up the World Heavyweight Championship and held it up in the air to a huge ovation as the segment drew to a close.
Match 4
WWE Womens Championship Match
Lay-Cool
Vs.
Beth Phoenix
This match was originally scheduled to be Beth Phoenix Vs. Rosa Mendes, but just as it was about to start Vickie Guerrero emerged from the back and announced that Michelle McCool had decided to invoke her re-match clause tonight, in a 2 on 1 Handicap Match.
It was pretty easy to work out who would win this match after recieving the following piece of information from our roving reporter The Informant:
Joy quickly turned to anguish for Beth Phoenix this past week, as almost instantly after claiming the WWE Womens Championship she has picked up a VERY serious knee injury that is likely to put The Glamazon on the shelf indefinately.
Expect her to drop the gold very soon and disappear from our screens for the forseeable future.
-The Informant
As we’ve come to expect here at WWEBlog, The Informant is very rarely wrong and the outcome of this match did indeed see the title change hands.
However, it didn’t go to the Diva you’d expect, with Layla picking up the win after a clash of heads between Beth and Michelle.
Layla is the first ever British Womens Champion, which I suppose is a good thing, but does it really mean anything?
After the bell Vickie and Michelle congratulated Layla, but I expect Michelle will turn on her apprentice very soon.
Layla wins by Pinfall and becomes the NEW WWE Womens Champion.
Match 5
Singles Match
Chavo Guerrero
Vs.
Kane
Well, I guess jobbing to Kane is a step up from jobbing to Hornswoggle, but things still aren’t really looking up for Chavo since his switch to the blue brand.
Kane picked up the win with the Chokeslam.
Kane wins by Pinfall.
Segment 6
Boo Hoo Drew
Backstage a rather smug Drew McIntyre walks into Teddy Long’s office and asks why the GM wants to see him.
Teddy concedes to Drew that he must be the chosen one because all he had to do was run off crying to the boss and he got his job and his title belt re-instated.
He admits that there’s no way he could take anything away from the IC Champion, so instead he’s going to give him something; a match next week against The Big Show.
Main Event Match
Singles Match
Rey Mysterio
Vs.
C.M Punk
This seems like a very odd strategy from the WWE, putting one of the headline matches scheduled for Over the Limit on Smackdown just 9 days before the event.
Normally when they do something like this, it’s a big swerve and the match doesn’t actually take place, but five minutes into this bout it became clear that wasn’t the case this time.
This wasn’t a bad match by any stretch, although it wasn’t anything different from the last two times they’ve met and it did nothing to make me more interested in the bout at Over the Limit.
Punk dominated a lot of the match but as Rey got into the flow of things Luke Gallows hit the ringside area, shortly followed by a ‘hooded figure’ that blatantly wasn’t the same one as we’ve seen for the past few weeks.
Rey cut off the ‘mystery attacker’ this time, but just as he was about to strike it was revealed that it was in actual fact Serena.
Then, as Rey looked confused, the REAL ‘mystery man’ appeared from the other side of the ring and struck.
After receiving a beatdown from Gallows and the hooded figure Mysterio was placed on Punk’s shoulders so he could deliver a GTS.
The society then lined up and pledged allegiance to the Society, while Punk held Rey’s limp and lifeless arms in the same position.
Rey Mysterio wins by Disqualification.
