The Smackdown Summary
Match 1
Singles Match
Rey Mysterio
Vs.
C.M Punk (w/ The Straight Edge Society)
Smackdown starts tonight with one of three ‘Elimination Chamber Entrant’ matches, which pit the participants of next Sunday’s Chamber match against each other.
Matt Striker seemed to get confused as to what an Elimination Chamber Match actually is during this one, stating that the action can spill all over the arena and that pinfalls can even take place on top of the huge metal structure.
Feel free to get in touch and correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think either of those things have ever happened in an Elimination Chamber match.
Mysterio took a serious beating in the early going, which could be used as an excuse if he doesn’t put on a high-flying spectacular performance at No Way Out, due to a legitimate knee injury he is still carrying.
After what seemed like an age Mysterio finally began to battle back and even avoided interference from both Serena and Luke Gallows to pick up the win with a Sunset Flip after reversing the GTS.
Gallows jumped Mysterio instantly after the bell and proceeded to absolutely destroy him, even letting Serena get in the final shot with a kick to the ribs.
Punk then dragged him to his feet and made Gallows place him across his shoulders so he could hit the GTS.
Rey Mysterio wins by Pinfall.
Match 2
Singles Match
Drew McIntyre
Vs.
Kane
Before McIntyre’s opponent was revealed he said that as the Intercontinental Champion he will face anyone that walks through the curtain.
Kane’s pyro’s hit and The Big Red Machine made his way to the ring.
McIntyre said that on second thoughts he doesn’t have anything to prove, and if Kane wants a match he’ll have to wait until next week.
However, the referee rang the bell and Kane struck with a Big Boot, setting this match in motion despite the IC Champion’s plans to postpone it for a week.
Kane came close to picking up the win a couple of times, but in the end this bout boiled down to a double count out.
Both men tumbled to the outside and once back to their feet slugged it out against the barricade. Kane got the better of it, but failed to beat the count.
After the bell McIntyre struck with a Boot of his own then grabbed the IC title.
As he went to swing it at Kane he got caught in a Chokeslam, leaving him down and out in the ring as The Big Red Machine set off his turnbuckle fireworks.
Match ended in a Double Count-Out.
Segment 1
STILL?
Backstage Mickie James is just about to eat some fruit from the refreshment table when Lay-Cool appear and start to make fun of the fact that she’s eating.
Mickie tells them that the thing between them is done, but Lay-Cool tell her she still isn’t welcome here and as long as she’s got the Womens Championship it isn’t going to be over.
Michelle tries to tempt Mickie into eating some cottage cheese, but she slaps the dish out of her hands and up into the air.
As the camera pans across it reveals where the cheese landed; on Vickie Guerrero.
Vickie screams and Mickie makes a sharp exit while Lay-Cool try to calm the ‘Smackdown Consultant’ down.
Match 3
Divas Match
Mickie James
Vs.
Layla (w/ Michelle McCool)
Rather predictably as this match got going Vickie Guerrero screeched her way out onto the ramp and made this a handicap match.
Match 3.1
Divas Handicap Match
Mickie James
Vs.
Lay-Cool
This was about as dull as matches get and cemented the fact that this god awful Mickie/Lay-Cool feud is far from over.
The numbers game caught up with the Womens Champion at the end of this match, allowing Michelle to hit the Faith Breaker and grab the 1..2..3.
Lay-Cool win by Pinfall.
Segment 2
Batista’s Explanation
After footage of the savage attack on John Cena from last week’s Raw, The Animal makes his way to the ring under a single spotlight.
Once there Josh Mathews asks him to explain what provoked him to attack Cena, then walk out of an Elimination Chamber qualifying match.
Batista then proceeded to wander around the ring with the microphone for what seemed like 10 minutes, while the crowd chanted for Cena and generally showed their disdain for the man in the ring.
Eventually Batista headed to the outside of the ring, where he again paced silently around, stopping only to look at a fan in Cena t-shirt.
He climbed back into the ring, held the microphone up to his lips… then threw it on the floor and left.
As he got towards the top of the ramp the crowd began to chant ‘you suck’, prompting The Animal to turn back towards the ring, shouting ‘so you want an explanation?’
Once in the ring he picked up the microphone, held it to his lips… then threw it on the floor and left again.
The crowd were incensed and booed him all the way to the back.
So, it turns out Batista is better at cutting promos when he doesn’t even open his mouth. Who’d have known eh?
Segment 3
Long’s Reaction
Teddy Long is the next to grace us with his presence, although he doesn’t stay for too long.
He says that as Batista didn’t feel like giving a reason for his actions, maybe he’d rather compete tonight.
Long then announced that Batista would go 1 on 1 with Edge ‘on Smackdownnnnnnn’.
The camera’s quickly cut away from Long and the crowd noise seemed to get a lot louder.
I’m putting my money on Long announcing the match was for tonight when in actual fact is isn’t.
Match 4
Tag Team Match
Matt Hardy & The Great Khali (w/ Runjin Singh & Maria)
Vs.
The Harty Dynasty
Before the match Matt wishes everyone in the arena a happy valentines day in advance, then brags to the crowd that he’ll be spending his day with Maria, who he brings out from the back.
This match was about as uneventful as the Hart Dynasty/Cryme Tyme matches that preceded it.
Maria and Natalya ended up brawling around on the outside after some attempted interference, which distracted Kidd long enough for Hardy to roll him up and grab the 3.
Matt Hardy & The Great Khali win by Pinfall.
Match 5
Singles Match
John Morrison
Vs.
R-Truth
This match was as short as they come and left me wondering whether what happened was legitimate or a work.
After coming off the ropes Morrison rolled over the back of R-Truth and landed awkwardly, jarring his ankle and immediately going to ground, clutching his foot.
The referee almost instantly halted the match and awarded the win to Truth as Morrison could no longer continue.
EMT’s hit the ring and tended to Morrison, who was helped to the back by fellow competitor R-Truth.
Regardless of whether the injury is legitimate or not, what does this mean for the Elimination Chamber?
R-Truth wins by Forefit.
Segment 4
The Edge Factor
Edge is introduced by Tony Chimmel and once in the ring begins to talk about the perks of being a Rumble winner.
He says that not only does he get a top billing spot at WrestleMania, but he also gets to avoid the brutal Elimination Chamber match.
He then ponders over who he may face at WrestleMania, saying that The Undertaker stands out from the pack as there would be more than just the title on the line.
Edge concedes that whoever he faces at WrestleMania is out of his hands, but he knows for sure that next week he has to face The Animal; Batista.
So that match IS next week, not tonight.
Jericho’s music hits and the former Superstar of the Year makes his way to the ring.
He says he can’t believe Edge didn’t consider him as an opponent for WrestleMania, but says he realises why.
Jericho says he’s a bad luck charm for the Rated R Superstar.
He talks himself up for a few minutes, then tells Edge to stay out of his way because if he doesn’t bad things will happen.
Jericho ends the segment by telling Edge that if he doesn’t believe him, he should watch the next match and see what he does to the ‘so called Deadman’, who destroyed The Rated R Superstar 2 years ago at ‘Mania.
Main Event Match
No Disqualification Match
The Undertaker
Vs.
Chris Jericho
Edge joins the commentary team for this match and says that this match-up could easily have been a main event at WrestleMania (which I think it was originally considered for, when Edge still looked unlikely to return.)
Striker asks if there is any truth in the rumour that Edge would challenge Taker if he kept hold of the gold at ‘Elimination Chamber’, but he refused to answer.
While we’re on the subject, you may have noticed over the past couple of weeks I’ve been referring to the next Pay Per View as ‘No Way Out’.
It turns out that WWE have dropped the ‘No Way Out’ but all together now, sticking with the bizarre trend of naming PPV’s after the match types that are taking place there.
It’s now simply ‘WWE Elimination Chamber’. I don’t know who’s idea it was to re-brand all these events, but it seems like a stupid thing to do.
Sure, theme an event, but there’s no need to change the name too. Elimination Chambers have been a staple of No Way Out for a few years now, and they did just fine.
Anyway, rant over.
This match wasn’t quite as good as the first time Jericho and Taker fought, at least in my opinion.
Edge’s commentary added something, or at least it did until Taker smashed him in the face with a Big Boot.
Jericho uncovered a turnbuckle but it was The Undertaker who eventually used it, then hit the Last Ride which looked like ending the bout.
However, Edge slid into the ring and gained a level of revenge, Spearing the Deadman and allowing Jericho enough time to recover and strike with the CodeBreaker to grab somewhat of an upset victory.
Taker brought that on himself with the unprovoked attack.
Chris Jericho wins by Pinfall.
