The Smackdown Summary
Opening Segment
Batista Sets the Record Straight
Smackdown opens with The Animal tonight and we’re going to open with an early candidate for sign of the night; ‘Bad-Tista’.
It’s so terrible it’s actually good.
Anyway, once in the ring Batista says he wants to let everyone know that he didn’t want to be in a Street Fight tonight against Mysterio and he doesn’t even think Rey deserves to be in the same ring as him, let alone a match.
Next he talks about how people have turned their backs on him since he started his latest campaign for the World Heavyweight Championship.
He says he doesn’t care because it isn’t about them, it’s about him, then goes on a massive rant about not needing Evolution, Mysterio or the fans support.
To emphasise his point he gets the guys behind the scenes to hit him with a spotlight. He says he’s here to make money and win titles, which brings him onto The Undertaker.
Dave talks about his dominance against the supposed ‘Phenom’ over the past couple of weeks, then claims that Taker has already lost at TLC and the match is now merely a formality, so everyone needs to get used to The Animal being World Heavyweight Champion.
This was one of the better promos I’ve seen Batista deliver, but it was quite hard to put across the intensity he put into it here.
Match 1
Tag Team Match
C.M Punk & Luke Gallows
Vs.
R-Truth & Matt Hardy
Anyone who didn’t see this match coming must have been living under the proverbial rock for the past couple of weeks, because it’s been blatantly obvious for a while that this is what they were leading to.
As Matt and Truth enter Matt dishes out some Jeff Hardy DVD’s to the crowd, incensing Punk who tells them not to accept it as it’s ‘poison’, like they’re gonna turn down a free DVD!
He then, possibly realising this, tells them to sell them on E-Bay rather than watching them. Isn’t that just enabling someone else Punk? Tut tut.
Obviously annoyed that the Straight Edge Superstar had talked over his stellar rapping, Truth drilled Punk with the microphone before the bell rang.
Matt Striker talked about how we will finally get to see Luke Gallows in action, clearly oblivious to the fact that we have seen him in action numerous times when he was Festus.
Gallows deserves credit for getting back in shape as he’s visibly more toned than he used to be, but he still seems to move quite awkwardly in the ring.
Despite mentioning how Gallows used to be Festus numerous times during the bout, the commentary team never once mentioned Jesse.
In fact, I don’t recall Jesse being mentioned at all since this angle began, despite being the big man’s ‘handler’ until they were split up in the draft.
I assume that’s a feud best saved for the future.
This match was nothing special. At the climax Punk and Hardy battled to hit their finisher, reversing each other until Hardy finally landed the Twist of Fate. However, in the build up Gallows had received a blind tag, allowing him to hit the Big Boot and the ’12 Steps’ to pick up his first win under his new guise.
C.M Punk & Luke Gallows win by Pinfall.
Segment 2
Vickie & Escobar
After some commercials we join Vickie Guerrero and Eric Escobar backstage, with Teddy Long looking on.
They speak in what I assume is Puerto Rican until Teddy steps in and asks what has been said.
Escobar says he just told Vickie that a lot of people thought she was his mother when they were together, but unlike Vickie his mother isn’t as big as Texas.
Vickie demands that Long put Escobar in the next match, then informs him that he will be facing Jericho.
Eric says more in Puerto Rican then at Teddy’s request, explains that he told her two things. Firstly, that she needs a breath mint, and secondly that he’s prepared to take anything she throws at him, because anything is better than having to look at her face.
Vickie breaks out into fits of screechy abuse while Teddy chuckles away to himself behind her back.
Segment 3
Kane & Knox
Elsewhere The Big Red Machine bumps into his opponent from last week; Mike Knox.
Knox says that when they fought last week he realised they are the same, both monsters who no one understands.
He says that he enjoyed fighting him last week and he’d like to do it again.
Kane tells him that they are nothing alike and he is the only monster around. He says they can fight again tonight.
Knox tells Kane he’ll be leaving as a broken monster tonight, but not to worry because he’ll ride in the ambulance with him.
Kane grabs Knox by the throat, but Knox seems to enjoy it and explains how asphyxiation can cause extreme euphoria around the entire body.
Match 2
Singles Match
Eric Escobar
Vs.
Chris Jericho
Despite getting a much stronger response from the crowd tonight, I fear Escobar is once again on jobbing duty.
A lot has been said about how this week could have been Jericho’s last night on Raw (despite him being almost a certainty to show up at the Slammys next week), but no one has really picked up on the flip side of that statement.
If DX take the titles, they could be on Smackdown next week, or even ECW.
Do we really want to see DX two, maybe even three times a week given their current run of distinctly average ‘merchandise sales’ segments?
We might not want to, but I’m sure the WWE Finance dept. wouldn’t mind at all.
Escobar started this match very strongly and actually grabbed a near fall in the opening moments, just seconds before Vickie appeared at the top of the ramp milking her ‘Excuse Me’ bit.
She tells Escobar she’s here to apologise, as she forgot to inform him that this was a handicap match including… yeah you guessed it; The Big Show.
Match 2.1
Handicap Match
Eric Escobar
Vs.
Jeri-Show
Escobar tried valiantly to pick up a victory before Show got to the ring, but it was all in vain.
Once Show stepped onto the apron the dissection began, ending moments later when Jericho applied the Walls of Jericho forcing Escobar to tap out.
After the bell Jericho grabbed a microphone and ranted about how Sunday will be the end of DX, explaining how he and Show are going to end their careers.
Show then took over and said… well, pretty much the same thing actually.
Jeri-Show win by Submission.
Segment 4
Intercontinental Showdown
McIntyre is first to the ring for this showdown. He complains about how despite being hand picked by Mr. McMahon as a future World Champion, it’s John Morrison that is featured on the cover of WWE Magazine.
McIntyre reminds everyone of how he beat Morrison last week, then asks the crowd why they put so much faith in the current IC champion.
He says that come the end of their match at TLC, not only will Morrison no longer be a ‘champion of the future’, he won’t be a champion at all.
WWE’s generic ‘Scottish’ music begins to play and out from the back emerges John Morrison… dressed as William Wallace (aka Braveheart.)
Putting on his best Scottish voice Morrison tells McIntyre he won’t stand for any disrespect and that the people don’t have faith in him because no one understands what he says.
McIntyre tells him this better be a joke, and if Morrison has any sense he’ll stop joking around and start taking him seriously.
Morrison questions why McIntyre calls himself ‘The Chosen One’, concluding that it is because he’s got his head so far up Mr. McMahon’s arse that there’s crap on the end of his nose.
After some more back and forth Morrison tells McIntyre that at TLC ‘you may take our lives, but you’ll never take my Intercontinental Title’.
McIntyre says he’s had enough of Morrison making fun of him and his culture, daring him to drop his sword and fight him like a real man.
Morrison obliges, then asks why McIntyre thinks he can walk around like he owns the place just because a senile old man gave him his seal of approval.
This comment didn’t really go down too well with the crowd.
The two end up brawling, with Morrison getting the better of it and McIntyre fleeing through the crowd.
Match 3
Singles Match
Kane
Vs.
Mike Knox
Just what we were all crying out for; a Kane/Knox re-match.
Knox is one of the two men at the top of The Informant’s ‘for the chop’ list.
The other man up there; Eric Escobar already jobbed tonight, will Knox follow suit?
Yes, is the quick answer.
Kane picked up the pinfall after a Chokeslam, ending this one fairly quickly.
Kane wins by Pinfall.
Match 4
Diva Tag Team Match
Mickie James & Maria
Vs.
Michelle McCool & Layla
Michelle and Layla enter with their ‘Piggie James’ T-Shirts on. Am I the only one who still isn’t finding this remotely funny?
This match was a waste of screen time.
The entrances probably lasted longer than the match did, which ended when Mickie threw Layla into Michelle, then rolled her up on the rebound.
I feel like I’ve just wasted 2 minutes of my life.
Mickie James & Maria win by Pinfall.
Main Event Match
Street Fight Match
Rey Mysterio
Vs.
Batista
Mysterio is fighting injured here, so I wouldn’t expect this to be anything too epic, and probably the reason behind why for the first ten minutes or so this may as well have been a standard match.
Our very own WWEBlog Informant explained a few weeks back that Mysterio is in need of surgery which would have put him out of action until well after WrestleMania, then just this week reported that Mysterio has pushed this treatment back until after ‘Mania, more than likely because he’s missed a lot of the ‘big ones’ in past years.
After some fairly tame action on the outside Batista brought a chair into the ring and looked to deliver a Batista Bomb down onto the steel, but Mysterio battled back and hit the 619 followed by a Senton Splash and some chair shots to the knees.
Batista put an end to this with a huge Spear, then closed in on the victory, delivering a nasty chair shot which picked up the 3 count no problem.
After the bell Batista ran the referee from the ring and wrapped the steel chair around Rey’s neck.
Just as he was about to jump from the second rope and put Mysterio back on the shelf the all too familiar gong sounded and the lights went out.
When they came back up Taker was standing in Rey’s place. He beat Batista down in the corner and snatched up the chair, but The Animal fled the ring before any serious damage could be done.
That’s it for tonight folks!
Join us for live results as soon as the TLC PPV begins!
Batista wins by Pinfall.
