The Smackdown Summary
Segment 1
More Fatal 4 Way Fun
Before the opening match Rey Mysterio hit the ring to cut a promo, oh what a treat we’re in for!
He talked about how he beat the odds last week, as he always does, and that when he wins the gold at Fatal 4 Way it won’t be his World Title, it’ll be ‘OUR’ World Title (referring to the WWE Universe.)
Thankfully Swagger cut him off and hit the ring, telling the Ultimate Underdog that all he has done is capitalise on the misfortune of The Undertaker.
He then broke off into his usual ‘I’m amazing’ style of promo, claiming he always knew he was destined to be Heavyweight Champion of the World.
The crowd broke out into a ‘Swagger Sucks’ chant and Mysterio branded everything he just said as ‘stupid’ before focusing on The All American American’s speech impediment… again.
He said he was proud to be from the 619, and that’s all it’s going to take for him to snatch the title away.
C.M Punk is the next to enter the fray, backed by the S.E.S.
He claimed it was a miracle for him to even be walking, never mind showing up on Smackdown after the ‘assassination attempt’ on him last week on Raw.
He embellished the facts a little (36 armed assailants for example) but I think the point he makes is valid.
He attributed this to the fact that he is ‘extraordinary’ and said the only thing that could make him better than he is now is to become a 4 time Straight Edge World Heavyweight Champion, which is what he’s going to do at Fatal 4 Way.
Mysterio tells Punk to show some dignity and remove his mask, and show the WWE Universe what he looks like bald.
Oh god not this again…
Thankfully, someone who IS bald emerged to kill the topic dead; The Big Show.
Show says he’s going to take care of a little business first, then claims that there’s every likelihood he’ll walk into Fatal 4 Way and take the title after beating the crap out of them all.
Show says that he pulls of bald pretty good, and thinks Punk should embrace it, so later he says he’ll pull the mask off for him.
Before we can get too involved in pointless hair politics the lights turn red and Kane appears on the titantron.
He tells the four men in the ring that if they think they can vie for Taker’s holy grail without fear of reprisal, they are dead wrong.
He indicates that WHEN he finds out who did it, they’ll end up in a casket, then suggests it may have been more than one of them bound together in an unholy alliance.
Finally Kane vows vengeance and the segment comes to a close.
Well thank god Punk and Show turned up to save that from being a complete snooze-fest.
Match 1
Singles Match
Jack Swagger
Vs.
Rey Mysterio
For the second week running now Jack Swagger, the World Heavyweight Champion, is in the opening match of the night.
Didn’t there used to be a time where having the World Championship draped over your shoulder meant you were pretty much certain to be in or around the main event?
Whether this shows a lack of confidence in Swagger, or if it’s just coincidence I’m not sure, but it seems strange that he keeps opening the show and either winning unconvincingly (having to use the ropes to beat M.V.P last week) or losing, as he did in this one.
Mysterio picked up the win after hitting the third 619 of the match and dropping the dime for the 1..2..3.
After the match Swagger began to beat the hell out of Mysterio, continuing even as Kane began to make his way to the ring.
Once the Big Red Machine got there, he delivered his own style of justice, Chokeslamming both men before heading back up the ramp.
Rey Mysterio wins by Pinfall.
Match 2
Divas Match
Layla (w/Michelle McCool & Kaval)
Vs.
Tiffany (w/Kelly Kelly)
What’s all this ‘self-professed co-Womens Champion’ crap?
It sounds completely stupid. I get that they are pushing the fact they just decided to be co-champs, but it still sounds totally ridiculous.
Anyway, Lay-Cool began insulting the crowd, which included McCool’s parents, but they decided they were ‘flawless’ so it was ok, or something like that.
It’s interesting to note that Terry McCool looked pretty embarrassed for his daughter, and why wouldn’t he.
Lay-Cool continued to do the ‘Clueless’ bit until Tiffany’s music cut them off.
How embarrassing for Low-Ki that he has to stand at ringside with the WWE Womens Championship on his shoulder.
I suppose he can take solace in the fact that it’s not the hideous Divas Championship.
Tiffany bossed the match until Michelle caused the distraction, allowing Layla to hit the ‘Layout’ (a Neckbreaker) for the 3.
Cue the booing from the crowd and moronic dancing and screeching from the ‘self-professed co-Womens Champions’… Damnit they’ve got me at it now!
Layla wins by Pinfall.
Match 3
Singles Match
Christian
Vs.
Dolph Ziggler
After yet another showing of the N’Invasion from Raw, which to be honest I’m getting completely fed up of seeing now, Christian made his way to the ring for the next match.
However, before his opponent appeared Vickie Guerrero appeared at the top of the ramp to give him a special introduction.
She called Ziggler ‘the future of the WWE’ (if only it were true!) then latched onto him as he made his way to the ring.
Dolph sat Vickie next to the announce table, where Striker began fawning over her, claiming he loved ‘The Cougar’.
I loved this match. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again now, Christian and Ziggler put on PPV quality matches.
The problem is mid-card grudge matches don’t seem to make it onto the big cards very often (with the exception of JTG Vs. Shad, which probably did more damage than good when hoping for more.)
Christian stole a win with a roll-up, much to Vickie’s dismay, but his adulation didn’t last long as Hawkins and Archer showed up to make a statement just hours before their contract ends.
After they had left the ring Ziggler stood Christian up and locked on the Sleeper, choking him out as the crowd showed their disapproval.
Christian wins by Pinfall.
Segment 2
Keeping the Fire Burning
Backstage Kane is talking to a black coffin.
He says that he’s felt a guiding presence all his life, but now that is gone, his soul is hollow and he feels tortured.
Kane promises that whoever is responsible is damned to hell, with some strange voice effect that seemed totally out of place.
Wait, are we meant to think that The Undertaker is dead now?
Segment 3
The Chosen One Speaks
McIntyre demands Long come to the ring immediately and the G.M reluctantly obliges.
Teddy begins to speak but McIntyre tells him that he’ll only speak when he’s told to, and at the minute the only thing he needs to do is watch.
McIntyre shows clips of last week’s Intercontinental Championship Match and then the match/attack that took place on Raw.
Teddy tried to explain but McIntyre cuts him off and says that by order of Mr. McMahon, Matt Hardy is suspended from Smackdown, Raw and all WWE Programming.
Teddy tries to talk again by McIntyre snatches his microphone away and slams it to the outside of the ring.
He tells Teddy he warned him there would be repercussions for crossing him, and that time has now come. He backs Long into a corner and looks like he’s about to fire him or something when Kofi Kingston’s music hits and the IC Champion emerges.
Kofi says everyone is sick of hearing McIntyre whining week in/week out so he’s telling him right now to shut up.
After some more talking Kingston drills McIntyre with the microphone, leading to a brawl which he also ends with Trouble in Paradise.
It’ll be interesting to see where this goes…
Segment 4
Bad News for Teddy
After the commercials Teddy is trying to get hold of Mr. McMahon on his cell-phone when McIntyre busts into his office.
He snatches the phone away and tells Teddy what he was about to reveal in the ring; the pair of them have a match next week and if he doesn’t show up, he’s fired.
Kingston to make the save then?
Main Event Match
Singles Match
The Big Show
Vs.
C.M Punk
There wasn’t an awful lot left of the card for this match to fill by the time Teddy and Drew had finished all their little altercations, but Show and Punk did well with the time they had.
Show spent a lot of the match toying with Punk, but he fell into the age old trap of worrying too much about Punk’s mask.
Just as he was about to tear it off Gallows, Serena and the Masked Man hit the ring to jump Show.
They beat him down until Kane’s pyros hit and The Big Red Machine slowly approached.
He took out all three male members of the S.E.S before turning his focus on The Big Show, who he Chokeslammed in the centre of the ring as the show came to a close.
When looking at it logically it’d make a lot of sense if the N’Invasion had taken out Taker, after all they did have that 8 on 1 match against Kane that could tie them into it in some way.
That said, I still think it’s going to be a complete let-down with Kane actually being the one responsible for his brothers situation.
The Big Show wins by Disqualification.
