The Smackdown Summary
Segment 1
Matt… Hardy?
Just to clear things up, the surprise implied in the heading of this segment is less to do with being shocked Matt showed up after the beating he took last week, and more due to the fact Matt Hardy is kicking off Smackdown.
It’s been a while since someone outside the main event picture has kicked off one of the big two shows, and I wouldn’t even class Hardy as being in the IC picture, despite being embroiled in a feud with the current champion Drew McIntyre.
Hardy says that he shouldn’t really even be here tonight, showing footage of the brutal attacks he has endured in the past couple of weeks.
Afterwards he says that he’s not going anywhere and if Drew McIntyre wants to see the back of him he’ll have to come out and get rid of him.
McIntyre appears and talks about how he’s the Chosen One, making him completely untouchable. He says that as Hardy isn’t getting the message he’ll have to jump into the ring and beat it into him.
The pair brawl around the ring with Hardy getting the better of things until a pair of officials shoot down the ramp to split it up.
However, all they do is restrain Hardy long enough for McIntyre to get the upper hand, leading to yet another savage beating.
Eventually Teddy Long runs to ringside and after numerous warnings suspends McIntyre and strips him of the Intercontinental Championship.
When McIntyre continues his assault Teddy takes it one step further, firing the Sadistic Scot.
As Teddy checks on the condition of Hardy, a tribe of backstage staff eject McIntyre from the arena while he shouts about getting Mr. McMahon involved.
Very interesting, especially with the ‘Mr. McMahon’ character being retired earlier in the year.
I expect Vickie Guerrero will reinstate him soon enough.
Segment 2
Teddy Long Interviewed
After the commercials Josh Mathews caught up with Teddy Long backstage and asked him how Matt was and if he had any comment on the behaviour of McIntyre.
Teddy said that he hoped Matt was fine and that he’d never seen anything like what just took place at ringside.
Mathews tried to find out what would now happen to the IC Championship, but Long didn’t have any answers for him.
Match 1
Singles Match
M.V.P
Vs.
Luke Gallows (w/ The Straight Edge Society)
It looks like M.V.P’s first role on Smackdown is to support Rey Mysterio in his battles against C.M Punk and the Straight Edge Society.
You’ve got to feel for M.V.P a little bit. When he made his début on Smackdown he was touted as the biggest free agent in the business, he claimed both U.S and Tag Team gold… then it all started to go downhill.
First there was a kind of half story that he was broke, which quickly got quashed when they realised they could put the angle to better use with Shawn Michaels.
Then after a face turn a number of rivalries brought up his criminal past, and finally he got lumped into The Worlds Strongest Tag Team.
M.V.P looked like losing out here thanks to a distraction from Serena, but a second distraction, this time from Rey Mysterio, allowed him to hit PayDirt… sorry, the Play of the Day to pick up the win.
M.V.P wins by Pinfall.
Segment 3
Straight Edge Fury
After the commercials the Straight Edge Society are still in the ring.
Punk chastises Rey for his sneak attack, claiming it was unwarranted and cost Gallows the match.
He calls Rey out and brands him a coward.
Rey appears on the ramp and asks how Punk can call him a coward when for the past few weeks The Straight Edge Society’s mystery man has been jumping him from behind.
Punk denies having any knowledge of a ‘masked man’, claiming Rey is just using it as an excuse to blame someone else for his problems.
Rey says he’s come out here tonight to shave Punk’s head (why is he so obsessed with Punk’s hair?) and challenges him to a ‘decider’ match at Over the Limit.
If Punk loses he shaves his head, if Rey loses he joins the S.E.S.
Punk accepts but then Rey suggests a ‘better idea’.
He says that if Punk shaves his head right now, he’ll willingly join the S.E.S tonight.
Punk refuses, unsurprisingly.
Rey says that the two of them follow the same message, the only difference is Punk is a bad messenger. He says that they can do a lot of good around the world if they were to work together, and all Punk has to do is shave his head.
Punk refuses once again and Rey asks him why he won’t when he forces his two followers to do it, then suggests that Punk is only in it for himself.
No doubt these are the ‘seeds of doubt’ that will eventually split the S.E.S, which is a shame because I think they’ve still got a lot of promise.
Match 2
Divas Tag Team Match
Kelly Kelly & Tiffany
Vs.
Lay-Cool (w/ Vickie Guerrero)
Yawn.
Actually, Kelly and Tiffany make a very aesthetically pleasing tag team.
That’s probably the best thing I can say about this match. Nothing bad, but it was dull.
Lay-Cool picked up the win after some interference from Michelle and a Neckbreaker on Tiffany from Layla.
To be honest I didn’t see this match going any other way.
Lay-Cool win by Pinfall.
Segment 4
Intercontinental Championship Announcement
Backstage Teddy Long announced that there would be a 4-man tournament to decide who would battle for the vacant I.C Championship.
Smackdown loves tournaments I guess.
Christian, Cody Rhodes, Dolph Ziggler and Kofi Kingston are the chosen four. Preliminary matches are tonight, with the title match on next week’s show.
Come on Ziggler/Christian final! Although, Rhodes against Kingston would be equally as entertaining.
Match 3
Intercontinental Championship Tournament Match
Kofi Kingston
Vs.
Dolph Ziggler
This match featured two of my favourite Superstars in the WWE at the moment, so I apologise for how sparse the coverage is.
I don’t know if it’s because I just sat and watched it, rather than multi-tasking, but this was one of the best matches I’ve seen on Smackdown (or any WWE programming for that matter) for quite a while.
Sure it wasn’t as grandstand as Taker/HBK or an Elimination Chamber Championship match, but in terms of wrestling, move selling, playing to the crowd etc, this had it all.
Both men came close to victory, Kingston with a S.O.S (which still hasn’t won a match to my knowledge, despite deserving to) and Ziggler with a Sleeper.
However, Kofi used the ropes to escape the Sleeper and hit the Trouble in Paradise to progress.
I have to say I’m slightly upset at the result, I’d have much rather see Ziggler get a push, but either way this was a great match.
Hopefully Kingston will pick up the win next week and kick off a IC Championship feud with Ziggler.
Kofi Kingston wins by Pinfall and progresses in the Intercontinental Championship Tournament.
Match 4
Intercontinental Championship Tournament Match
Christian (w/ Heath Slater)
Vs.
Cody Rhodes
I tipped Cody for big things when he got drafted a few weeks ago, and already he’s been thrown into a situation that will more than likely lead to a shot at the Intercontinental Championship for the 3rd Generation Superstar.
I say this because Kingston’s in the final already, and as good as a Kingston/Christian title match would be next week, a heel/face match would add an extra element.
Plus Kingston and Cody already have some history, from back when Orton and Kingston had a brief but enjoyable rivalry at the end of last year.
This was another strong match, and to paraphrase Good Ole J.R ‘I think we’re seeing the future of the WWE right here’.
Both men put it all on the line to grasp a shot at the gold and just when it looked like Rhodes might be closing in on the win with a huge Moonsault, Christian turned the match on it’s head and hit the KillSwitch to grab the 1..2..3.
Hmm, well neither match went exactly as I’d hoped, but Kingston Vs. Christian next week should be a good one none the less.
Christian wins by Pinfall and progresses in the Intercontinental Championship Tournament.
Segment 5
Swagger Facts
Just when things were looking up, we get subjected to yet more ‘Swagger Facts’ courtesy of the World Heavyweight Champion.
Swagger babbled on about all his achievements, which I can’t be bothered to list here (check Wikipedia if you’re interested) before finally moving onto his Over the Limit opponent The Big Show.
He asks what The Big Show has ever done and says that come Over the Limit he’s going to take him to school and give him a re-education.
Not a moment too soon (although it could have been sooner for me) Kane’s pyro’s hit, indicating that it’s time for tonight’s main event.
Main Event Match
Singles Match
Jack Swagger
Vs.
Kane
Interesting choice of main event on what has been a very good episode of Smackdown.
Moments into the match The Big Show’s music hit and the 7ft2 500lb giant strode down the ramp in a suit, joining the commentary team.
Show sung Swagger’s praises during the match, but made it very clear that he didn’t like him and planned on taking his title.
This match wasn’t bad, but I’d rather have seen one of the IC semi-finals take the main event slot.
The match ended in a victory for Kane, but only after Swagger exposed a turnbuckle and continually drove The Big Red Machine’s side into it, leading to the disqualification.
After the match Swagger beat Kane down, then decided to get in The Big Show’s face.
Swagger turned away from Show and began to head to the back, but instead walked into a Big Boot from Kane, who had taken the time to recover.
Kane cleared the announce table but Swagger bettered him and wrapped his already injured side around a ring post.
However, he forgot about the gigantic #1 contender, who Chokeslammed him through the announce table before posing with Swagger’s Heavyweight Championship.
Kane wins by Disqualification.
