The Smackdown Summary
Segment 1
Spear! Spear! Spear!
Tonight’s show started with some more Edge/Jericho hype videos, before the Rated R Superstar made his way to the ring.
A video of his match with The Miz last week played, showing how he turned things round to pick up the win with a Spear.
Once on the microphone Edge says that he’s worried about WreslteMania… worried for his opponent Chris Jericho.
He says that despite big claims of victory from the current World Heavyweight Champion, he keeps getting Speared, and that will continue right up until WrestleMania.
Edge begins to chant ‘Spear! Spear! Spear!’ over and over along with the crowd until The Big Show’s music hits and the gigantic tag team Champion makes his way to the ring.
Edge describes his presence as a ‘depressing surprise’ then asks if he’s come to stand up for his tag partner, who got Speared last week.
He tells Show that he’s going to Spear him too in their match later tonight.
Show says he’s here for more than retribution against Edge, as he and The Miz will find out who their WrestleMania opponents are tonight.
He tells Edge that he got lucky last week, but tonight his luck will run out.
Edge asks Show what he’s going to do, considering eating him as a valid option.
This led to a blatant and shameless (albeit toned down) rip-off of Happy Gilmore, where Show stated that he eats pieces of crap like Edge for breakfast, and Edge responded by saying the fact he eats crap explains a lot about his breath.
Edge says he’s going to Spear him tonight, then lunged forward, sending Show jumping backwards.
Show then ran at Edge, who ducked and low-bridged him, leaving him on the outside as the segment drew to it’s dull conclusion.
Segment 2
Still Undefeated…Kind of…
Backstage Teddy Long is admiring the new Shawn Michaels DVD set when Drew McIntyre enters his office.
The oiled up Intercontinental Champion says that there seems to be a lot of people with the impression that he lost his first match against Kane last week, so he’d like Long to set the record straight.
Long delivers an official statement from WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, saying that his loss last week has officially been stricken from the record books, and he is therefore still undefeated.
Long then tells Drew that Kane’s qualification to the Money in the Bank ladder match still stands, so McIntyre will have another shot at qualification tonight against Matt Hardy.
Match 1
Money in the Bank Qualification Match
Drew McIntyre
Vs.
Matt Hardy (w/Justin Gabriel)
Tony Chimmel introduced the IC Champion as ‘undefeated’, then moments later a video played of his ‘expunged loss’ against Kane last week.
The clip seemed to fire up McIntyre, who began this match aggressively.
Hardy’s strong connection with his Rookie got some more exposure in this match, bringing him to ringside unlike William Regal on Superstars.
So far Hardy and Jericho seem to be the only Pro’s who actually get along with their Rookies, but whether it will come to anything I don’t know.
Rather surprisingly considering all the hoo-ha beforehand, Matt Hardy picked up the victory and is heading to WrestleMania to compete in the Money in the Bank match.
It wasn’t a pretty win, but the roll-up did the job and handed McIntyre his first loss… again.
Who’s betting McIntyre gets this match written off too and ends up fighting yet again for a spot in the Money in the Bank.
After the match McIntyre focused on the WrestleMania logo before going crazy yet again, destroying anything he could get his hands on.
He told Matt Striker to inform everyone he WILL be at WrestleMania.
Matt Hardy wins by Pinfall and qualifies for the Money in the Bank Match at WrestleMania XXVI.
Segment 3
Road to WrestleMania
Backstage Jesse, sorry… Slam Master J, is checking out John Morrison’s DVD which features his ‘Parkour Workout’.
He and Morrison talk about it for a little while and then Jesse leaves, clearing the way for R-Truth and his Rookie David Otunga to enter.
Truth explains that Otunga got a little hot-headed on NXT after losing his first match, but the two have sorted it all out.
Otunga reluctantly agrees that they are on the same page, then Truth and Morrison talk about how they lost their spot at Mania to Dolph Ziggler, so their only chance of getting there is to beat two other Tag Teams tonight and become #1 contenders for the Tag Titles.
They discuss team names and say they’d both settle for ‘Unified Tag Team Champions’, rejecting a selection of suggestions including ‘Rock and Rap’ and ‘Dis n Dat’.
Match 2
Singles Match
Shelton Benjamin
Vs.
Dolph Ziggler
So apparently there’s a rivalry forming between Ziggler and Benjamin, at least according to the commentary team anyway.
It’s the first I’d heard of it, but apparently Ziggler is sick of people saying what a great athelete Benjamin is, so he wants to beat him to prove a point… or something like that.
I like Benjamin and as you’ve probably guessed by now Dolph Ziggler is one of my favourites, so this match was a treat for me, but I can see why people would have had a hard time getting into it with so little background.
Both men looked impressive but it was Benjamin who picked up the victory with what Todd Grisham described as PayDirt, but looked much more like a Flying Clothesline as Ziggler accidentally fell backwards rather than forwards as he hit it.
Shelton Benjamin wins by Pinfall.
Match 3
Singles Match
Ezekiel Jackson
Vs.
Jimmy Wang Yang
While this wasn’t a ‘Local Talent’ match in terms of Jackson’s opponent being an established member of the WWE roster, it was in every other sense.
Wang Yang got in 3 or 4 shots, but in the end found himself looking up at the lights after Jackson hit the Book of Ezekiel to pick up a win on his Smackdown début (since the last time he was on Smackdown, of course.)
Ezekiel Jackson wins by Pinfall.
Segment 4
Family Values
Backstage Rey Mysterio’s daughter (or is it Eddie Guererro’s daughter? I guess we’ll never know now) is playing with a doll in what appears to be a very swanky dressing room.
Rey enters and gives her some plugged merchandise, then thanks Tiffany (who is also on Smackdown now, although in what sense I’m not sure) for looking after her.
He tells his daughter that he’s going to work now, but she can watch everything on the TV in the corner of the room.
Rey leaves and Tiffany helps his daughter open her new ‘action figure’ as the segment ends.
The point is?
Match 4
Singles Match
Luke Gallows (w/The Straight Edge Society)
Vs.
Rey Mysterio
I don’t really get Rey Vs. The Straight Edge Society.
Rey’s pretty squeaky clean and is probably the Superstar geared most towards the younger audience, so either this feud is going to have to focus around something other than Punk’s mission to rid everyone of sin, or they are going to have to risk alienating the younger audience and bring up Rey’s 30 day ‘substance’ ban that cost him the Intercontinental Championship.
Punk made his way to the ring accusing parents of neglecting their children, just like Rey Mysterio.
He then complained about Rey costing him his Money in the Bank match last week by laying his hands on Luke Gallows in an unprovoked attack.
This was about the extent of the promo, but as it was Punk he spun it out into a 5-minute tirade which he wrapped up by telling Gallows he forgives him and he should make Rey pay tonight.
I didn’t follow this match with any great amount of interest, but from what I saw it looked like your average Mysterio match.
Beaten down, beaten down, beaten down, beaten down… Underdog victory!
Punk tried to get involved during the match and failed, then did the same thing after the bell, going for the GTS only to take some elbows and a kick to the leg.
Rey Mysterio wins by Pinfall.
Segment 5
Jeri-Show Meet Again
Backstage Chris Jericho approaches his former Tag Team partner in the locker room.
He congratulates Show on his success with The Miz then starts to kiss his ass, before telling him to go out to the ring and destroy Edge for him.
Show sees through Jericho’s scheme and tells him that he owes him nothing, and tonight he’s going to go out there and win for himself, not for anyone else.
Match 5
Tag Team Championship #1 Contendership Match
R-Truth & John Morrison
Vs.
The Hart Dynasty (w/Natalya)
Vs.
Cryme Tyme
THIS is the best the WWE has to offer in terms of tag teams?
So we’ve got 2 singles competitors thrown together, a ridiculously underused team in the form of The Hart Dynasty and two guys who are, lets face it, glorified jobbers when it comes to any match with even the slightest hint of purpose and credibility in Cryme Tyme.
The match didn’t last all that long, or at least it didn’t seem to.
True to form Cryme Tyme disappeared at the end of the match, allowing R-Truth to pick up the win over Tyson Kidd.
Once again The Hart Dynasty have been overlooked in favour of two guys who are only really involved because they have nothing better to do come the biggest show of the year.
As much as I don’t like it, I saw it coming a mile off.
R-Truth & John Morrison win by Pinfall and become the #1 Contenders for the Unified Tag Team Championships.
Segment 6
Thank You Vickie
Backstage Lay-Cool have caught up with Smackdown Consultant Vickie Guerrero.
They thank her for her help last week and re-create the slap from Vickie to Mickie last week.
They present Vickie with one of their ‘Simply Flawless’ T-Shirts and continue to kiss her ass until Beth Phoenix appears.
Lay-Cool say they can smell something and leave, and Beth asks Vickie when she’s going to get her shot at the Womens Championship as she’s the most dominant Diva on the brand.
Vickie tells her that SHE is the most dominant Diva on the brand and she’ll never get a shot at the Womens Championship unless she authorises it.
Beth warns Vickie not to cross her, but the consultant echoes those sentiments back at her, telling her to ask Mickie James if she doesn’t believe her.
Main Event Match
Singles Match
Edge
Vs.
The Big Show
There’s not an awful lot of the show left to go once this match gets under-way, so I don’t expect an epic here.
The Spear is the topic of conversation for the announce team at the start of the match and guess what? Matt Striker has been hit with a Spear before (I don’t think there’s a finisher in the WWE Matt Striker won’t claim to have been hit with) and he says it hurts.
Show started the match strongly but Edge lulled him into a false sense of security on the outside and took advantage, ramming the giant’s huge head into the ring post.
It didn’t take Show long to re-gain control once back in the ring and he spent the best part of five minutes with the Rated R Superstar in a headlock.
Edge eventually escaped and got himself into position for the Spear, which he landed to pick up the 1..2.3.
After the bell Jericho hit the ring with his title and tried to take Edge’s head off with it, but failed miserably.
Instead he got hit with a Spear and sent to the back holding his ribs as the show came to a conclusion.
Edge wins by Pinfall.
