    The Smackdown Summary

    Opening Segment

    Jericho on The Rumble

There’s a lot scheduled to happen on Smackdown tonight, and that’s something they are keen to let us know about.

Edge is set to interview The Undertaker and there is some exclusive footage of what happened after Raw went off the air on Monday.

But before we get to that, Chris Jericho makes his way to the ring looking rather dejected.

He gets on the microphone and talks about how he had planned a slow and methodical rise to the top of the company, culminating in a Royal Rumble win and a title match at WrestleMania, but now those plans have been ruined.

He explains how he carried the company on his back for the past six months, but now all anyone can talk about is Edge and his return.

Jericho then begins to slate his former partner, talking about how he deserted him when they were champions and now has come back and taken a WrestleMania spot while he has nothing.

He calls out Teddy Long, asking him to ‘make things right’, then heads backstage when the G.M doesn’t show.

After shouting his way through the corridors Jericho bursts into Teddy’s office and finds… Edge sitting behind his desk.

Edge tells Jericho he’s the reason he’s back because he lit a fire under him.

Jericho says Edge will regret coming back, but the Rated R Superstar says it’ll be the other way around.

    Match 1

    Elimination Chamber Qualifying Match
    Drew McIntyre
    Vs.
    John Morrison
    Vs.
    Kane

I fully expected this match to be another re-hashing of the Morrison/McIntyre matches we’ve seen of late with Kane occasionally providing some brute strength, and to some extent it was.

However, that being said, I couldn’t take my eyes off it.

Morrison and McIntyre work so well together and it seems to stop things getting stale, especially when there is something on the line, be it a title or a Chamber slot.

Kane did his bit well too, eventually taking both a Future Shock onto the Intercontinental Championship and a Starship Pain before getting pinned.

Kane has jobbed to a lot of undeserving people since joining Smackdown many moons ago, but this is one of the few times I didn’t mind seeing it.

Great stuff, my only problem with the result is that it stops us seeing a IC title match between McIntyre and Morrison at No Way Out.

John Morrison wins by Pinfall and qualifies for the Elimination Chamber Match.

    Match 2

    Elimination Chamber Qualifying Match
    Mike Knox
    Vs.
    R-Truth

I can’t think of one off hand, but if there’s some sort of metaphor for something terrible following something amazing, it would apply to this.

Kane, Morrison and McIntyre pulled out all the stops for the first match of the night, only to be followed by two people who I doubt will even be employed by the WWE this time next year.

The Informant reported this week that Smackdown’s Elimination Chamber was going to supply the fast-paced action to balance out the slightly slower one Raw has planned, so with that information in mind it was pretty easy to see who would pick up the win here.

That and the fact that Mike Knox hasn’t, and never looks likely to get close to WWE gold.

Truth picked up the victory with the Lie Detector (yes, that’s right, he defeated the MASSIVE Mike Knox with a Spinning Elbow) and progressed into the Chamber.

R-Truth wins by Pinfall and qualifies for the Elimination Chamber Match.

    Segment 2

    Raw Off the Air

I ended this weeks Raw Review with the following :

“The Animal holds Bret up while Vince chews him out, adding insult to injury by spitting in his face as the show comes to a close.”

But as it transpires, the show didn’t actually end there, although the television coverage did.

This segment showed what happened after the live camera’s stopped rolling.

As many of the crowd in attendance expected, Cena hit the ring shortly after Vince spat in Bret’s face.

Batista initially left the ring while Cena helped Bret to his feet, but then returned and struck while his back was turned.

The Animal beat Cena down both inside and outside the ring before Powerbombing him on the Steel Steps.

Cena (w/Bret Hart) Vs. Batista (w/Vince McMahon) at WrestleMania then.

    Segment 3

    Straight Edge Pledge

Backstage C.M Punk is preaching to his ‘disciples’.

He tells them that without him, their leader, they are nothing and as he has a match against Batista tonight they need to be there for him.

They tell him that they are willing to do anything to preserve their salvation and he says that tonight both of them will have to.

    Match 3

    Elimination Chamber Qualifying Match
    Batista
    Vs.
C.M Punk (w/The Straight Edge Society)

This seemed like a very odd match to have given the huge heel pushes both these guys have been receiving as of late, and it soon became apparent that this wasn’t going to be a straight-forward battle for entry into the World Heavyweight Championship match.

As the opening bell rang Batista stood in the corner, refusing to move despite the referee’s best efforts to get the bout underway.

As Punk stood looking on slightly perplexed, Batista exited the ring and headed up the ramp, getting counted out in the process.

Punk celebrated the ‘win’ with his fellow S.E.S members while Batista neared the top of the ramp with a wry smile on his face.

Did Punk strike up a deal with The Animal? Or perhaps Batista knows he has something more important to do than go after the World Heavyweight Championship?

Only time will tell I suppose. Time or the Informant.

C.M Punk wins by Count out and qualifies for the Elimination Chamber Match.

    Segment 4

    Matt & Maria

Backstage Matt Hardy is on the way to the ring when he spots Maria.

He congratulates her for her appearance on Celebrity Apprentice and tells her that he secretly loves that show.

She wishes him luck for his match and he heads through the curtain.

    Point…Less.

    Match 4

    Elimination Chamber Qualifying Match
    Matt Hardy
    Vs.
    Chris Jericho

I personally think we’re going to see Jericho Vs. Edge at WrestleMania.

Taker’s ‘Streak’ is enough to make whatever match he’s in at ‘Mania hotly anticipated, and would likely overshadow the fact that the title was also on the line anyway.

So, it would make more sense to put the belt on someone else and let it work towards hyping up a different match, the most likely candidate being a Jericho/Edge bout.

As I’ve gone out on a limb with such a prediction, I was more than a little happy to see Jericho pick up the win over Hardy and progress to the Elimination Chamber.

Hardy went for the Twist of Fate, but Jericho held onto the ropes and landed a CodeBreaker seconds later to snatch the win.

Chris Jericho wins by Pinfall and qualifies for the Elimination Chamber Match.

    Segment 5

    Phoenix & Mickie

After some footage of her trials and tribulations with Lay-Cool Mickie James hits the ring with her newly won WWE Womens Championship.

She says that a lot of the pranks they pulled on her hurt, but at The Rumble she proved that staying true to yourself is all you need to do to be successful, and what goes around comes around.

Beth Phoenix’s music hits and The Glamazon makes her way to the ring.

She says that while Mickie was out celebrating her victory over ‘two little girls’ she was in the Rumble participating with 29 ‘grown men’.

Phoenix says she’s happy for Mickie because she stood up for herself and had her moment in the sun, but she should be aware that she can take that title from her whenever she gets the urge.

As tension rises in the ring Vickie Guerrero screeches her way out onto the ramp and tells them that she is the only one who will determine whether there is a match or not.

She says if they really want to compete, they can face the ‘true’ #1 contenders; Lay-Cool. Right Now.

    Match 5

    Divas Tag Team Match
    Beth Phoenix & Mickie James
    Vs.
    Lay-Cool

Why these Diva bouts keep getting pushed up the card I’ll never know, especially ones that end up like this.

After a pretty good start Beth drilled her own partner, then drilled McCool before heading up the ramp.

Layla got the tag and thought she had some easy pickings, but Mickie rolled her up and grabbed the win.

I wish they’d do something with Beth one way or another. I’d like to see her in a Chyna type role, going for the mens singles gold.

Beth Phoenix & Mickie James win by Pinfall.

    Segment 6

    Word Up

    Word Up is back everyone!

Anyone excited? Nah I didn’t think you would be.

It seems now Cryme Tyme’s program with The Hart Dynasty is over (thank the lord) they’ve gone back to doing ‘humorous’ segments.

    This week’s word is:

King: Supreme, above the rest, without equal, loved and respected by all peeps and peers.

Shad links this word to being in Memphis, singing a little ‘In the Ghetto’ before bringing in Jerry Lawler; ‘the ONLY King in WWE’.

King says it’s good to be the king and Shad says they are off to see some puppies as they all leave.

Hmm, seems a bit of a strange segment and the only thing I can think it would be leading to is a Booker T return, but it’d be a seriously lame way to lead into it if that was the case.

    Main Event Match

    Elimination Chamber Qualifying Match
    Rey Mysterio
    Vs.
    Dolph Ziggler

As with the R-Truth/Mike Knox match, the proposed nature of a high flying Smackdown Elimination Chamber made the outcome of this match ridiculously predictable.

That said, this match was infinitely more enjoyable than anything R-Truth and Mike Knox are ever likely to achieve and had been given a large chunk of the card to work with.

Mysterio picked up the win as predicted with a quick roll up, then avoided a shot from Ziggler after the bell and drilled him with a 619.

That’s the Chamber full now and I still have to say my money is firmly behind Chris Jericho to take the win.

Rey Mysterio wins by Pinfall and Qualifies for the Elimination Chamber Match.

    Closing Segment

The Cutting Edge with The Undertaker

It became apparent as Edge prepared to start this segment that Matt Striker doesn’t have internet access, and if he does he clearly doesn’t use it very much.

He boldly said ‘absolutely no one expected Edge to return at the Royal Rumble’.

Hey, Matt… pretty much everyone did.

He then said ‘no one in their right mind thought Edge would win it!’

Hey, Matt… around 20% of the people that voted in our Royal Rumble winner poll thought The Rated R Superstar would win it.

Yeah I know, he’s doing his job.

Anyway, back to the matter at hand.

Edge takes a few seconds to compose himself then starts by saying it feels really good to be back on the Blue Brand, which he considers home.

He talks about his injury and how all the blood, sweat and tears were all worth it to make it back for this very moment.

He explains his situation regarding WrestleMania and shows a video of one of his ‘potential’ opponents, namely the altercation he had with Sheamus on Raw.

Just as Edge continues to talk Jericho’s music hits and he walks purposefully towards the ring.

He knocks over the stools, snatches up a microphone and begins to blame Edge for ruining his plan, saying the Rated R Superstar didn’t deserve to win.

Edge says there’s one reason alone that Jericho didn’t deserve to win the Rumble and that’s because he got thrown over the rope.

Jericho tries to claim he is the face of Smackdown, but Edge says he no longer is.

Edge says that he’s sick of Jericho’s suits, the smug look on his face, the way he tried to turn his injury into a punchline and his whole demeanour in general.

C.M Punk’s music hits to break the tension and The Straight Edge Society walk out onto the ramp.

Punk says he’s better than everyone and that it isn’t about the two egomaniacs in the ring, but rather about the Elimination Chamber and The Undertaker.

Punk explains how he’s had more success against The Undertaker than either of them and how he became a beacon of hope for the WWE Universe, and at No Way Out he’ll prove that he’s better than them by winning the World Heavyweight Championship.

The Undertaker’s gong signals the arrival of the World Heavyweight Champion and all hell breaks loose in the ring.

Edge takes out Jericho with a Spear while The Undertaker deals with The Straight Edge Society.

When the ring has cleared Edge and Taker stand opposite one another.

Edge signals that he’ll be coming for The Deadman’s title and the show goes off the air.
