The Smackdown Summary - 4th September 2009
04/09/2009
Hello and welcome the this edition of the Smackdown Summary.
As you’ve probably noticed if you are a regular visitor, a few things have changed this week.
We’ve done away with the old ‘all 4 shows on 1 post’ format (for now at least) and decided to go with a standalone page for each one.
At first it might seem a bit complicated, bouncing between pages and all, but we promise it’ll make things way easier in terms of finding specific matches etc.
We’d love to know what you think about the changes so please feel free to get in touch via the Contact Us page, or any of the usual email addresses.
(By the way, the banners are purely temporary. We kind of rushed this idea through at the last minute and didn’t have time to get anything a bit better made.)
On with the show!

The Smackdown Summary
Opening Segment
Jeff’s Back! Oh, No…Wait…
After a video of Jeff’s emotional exit from Smackdown last week the show begins and kicks off with the music of…Jeff Hardy?
The kids in the arena began going crazy as what appeared to be Jeff Hardy emerged from behind the curtain and started dancing around at the top of the ramp.
It wasn’t long before everyone caught on to the fact it was actually C.M Punk in a cunning disguise.
Punk made his way to the ring and asked the crowd if they were expecting somebody else, then as the boos reigned down on him he likened them to junkies needing one last fix and told them they better drink it in while they can.
Punk then began a kind of ceremonial ridding of Jeff, first wiping off the facepaint, then removing the armbands and finally saying there would be no more excuses.
He moved on into his usual ‘Straight Edge’ rant, saying he’ll save the fans as he’s built to last and will be around forever.
Finally Punk moved on to The Undertaker, giving him respect as a legend but saying he is no longer the solitary icon on Smackdown and he certainly isn’t a 2-time Money in the Bank winner.
Punk called Taker out but he didn’t show. He then went on to say that he had no Breaking Point which is why he is such a perfect example of the Straight Edge lifestyle.
Just as Punk was about to admit to having one solitary vice, Matt Hardy emerged from the back and sprinted to the ring, taking down the World Heavyweight Champion with a Spear.
The two brawled around the ring until referee’s piled in to separate them.
Segment 2
Punk Complains to Teddy
Punk catches Teddy Long in the back and complains about Matt stealing his ring-time.
Teddy says the two of them can resolve it in the ring later tonight.
Punk seems worried that the match may be for his title, but Teddy assures him it will be a 1 on 1 non-title match, putting a grin on the champ’s face.
Match 1
Tag Team Match
The Great Khali & Finlay
Vs.
Mike Knox & Kane
Before the match Knox kept up his psychotic physician type gimmick, explaining how the human body shrinks throughout it’s lifetime due to bones being crushed ever so slightly.
J.R said before the match that Kane and Knox have the potential to make a very effective tag team, completely disregarding the fact they’ve teamed together a few times in the past to great effect.
The general format of this match saw Khali dominate whenever he was in the ring, while Finlay became the victim of dirty tactics and beatings whenever he got the tag.
As the match broke down Kane grabbed hold of Runjin Singh in an attempt to distract Khali from making a tag. However, while this distracted the referee Finlay drilled Knox with the Shaleighle to pick up an unlikely win.
The Great Khali & Finlay win by Pinfall.
Segment 3
Maria, Eve and McCool
Backstage Maria and Eve are chatting about Eve’s loss to Natalya on Superstars.
Michelle McCool barges in, still on crutches, and calls the pair of them losers.
McCool went on to say Maria is just Dolph’s flavour of the week and her designer outfits are hideous.
Maria gave back as good as she got, saying Michelle doesn’t know what to do with herself when she’s out of the spotlight.
Melina then came in and ran McCool out of the dressing room before asking Maria if she’d spoken to Dolph about what she had seen last week.
Maria told her that she’s big enough to look after herself and politely asked if she’d stay out of their business.
Match 2
Intercontinental Championship Match
John Morrison
Vs.
Rey Mysterio (c)
Well it isn’t hard to guess the outcome of this match. Rey is technically on a suspension, so the only reason he could possibly be on Smackdown tonight is to drop the title so someone else, John Morrison in this case, can defend it at Breaking Point.
I’ve no doubt this will be a great match and I’m sure Morrison Vs. Ziggler at Breaking Point will be fantastic too, but it seems kind of a slap in the face for both Morrison and Ziggler.
Morrison is only getting the belt because Rey broke the rules, and you’ve got to believe that Breaking Point was set to be Ziggler’s time to shine and win the IC title on the third try.
Now either Morrison gets used as a 9 day transitional champion, or Ziggler loses out on a title run that he would probably have started next Sunday.
The crowd were clearly divided during this one, but there were far more people cheering for Morrison than I expected.
As predicted this was an amazingly good bout and would have easily slotted into a number of this year’s PPV’s despite the lack of a storyline, which is a testament to how good of a performance they put on.
Mysterio looked like retaining the title a number of times, although I think almost anyone who knew about his ‘Wellness’ violation knew that wasn’t going to happen. In fact, if anything detracted from the quality of the match it was being pretty much 100% sure of the outcome.
Morrison finally picked up the win and the Intercontinental Championship with the Starship Pain.
Towards the end of the match the crowd were chanting ‘This is Awesome’ and I have to agree with them, it was.
Match of the Year candidate.
John Morrison wins by Pinfall and becomes the NEW Intercontinental Champion.
Segment 4
‘What’s Up’ With Drew McIntyre
As R-Truth made his way to the ring for a match Drew McIntyre jumped him from behind.
After beating the hell out of him, McIntyre grabbed a microphone and said he was tired of being overlooked while this dancing fool gets matches and the adulation of the fans.
He assured everyone that until he got the respect he deserved he would continue to come out each week and ‘ruin the party’.
Match 3
Divas Tag Team Match
Maria & Eve Torres
Vs.
Natalya & Layla
Almost any match would struggle to top the Intercontinental Title bout that came before this one, so I suppose it was a wise strategy to give the fans a break before the Punk/Hardy main event by using this pretty average Divas match as a buffer.
Natalya was impressive as ever but this was a largely forgettable match and the crowd were as flat as month old cola.
Eve won the match with the Handspring Body Splash.
Maria & Eve win by Pinfall.
Segment 5
Matt Hardy Interviewed
Josh Mathews spoke to Matt Hardy backstage and asked him about the match later tonight against CM Punk.
Hardy said Punk should be afraid of The Undertaker, but more importantly he should be worried about Matt Hardy.
Hardy said unlike Taker he isn’t after Punk’s title, he’s after his health, well-being and his career.
Main Event Match
Singles Match
C.M Punk
Vs.
Matt Hardy
It’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for Matt once this mini-rivalry with Punk comes to an end.
I’ve always considered him the more well-rounded Hardy, being far better at promo delivery than his brother although perhaps not quite as fluid in the ring.
This match for example, wasn’t quite as exciting as the matches between Punk and Jeff. However, the interview beforehand was delivered far more coherently than any Jeff promo I can remember.
Hardy looked a shade or two behind the pace at points, but that’s forgiveable when you consider this is his first singles match in over 2 months.
When things did click into gear there were real signs that these two guys could pull off a classic at some point in the future.
Personally I’d have rather seen the Mysterio/Morrison match at the top of the card, at least until Hardy was back to 100% as I think even with the divas match in between a lot of people were still in awe of what they saw earlier in the night.
The conclusion of the match saw Punk drill Matt with a steel chair, then wrap it around his neck clearly with the intention of throwing him into the ringpost.
However, a bell tolled, the lights went out and when they came back up The Undertaker had appeared to make the save.
Taker grabbed the champ by the throat and Chokeslammed him straight through the announce table, sending a message to his opponent for Breaking Point and signifying his official return to Smackdown.
Matt Hardy wins by Disqualification.
