The Smackdown Summary
Segment 1
Suffering Swagger
Former World Champ Jack Swagger kicks off the show tonight and he’s still harping on about how he should still hold the belt.
He said that until he re-claims what is rightfully his he’ll continue to make people suffer, and if he can make the biggest athlete in the world suffer like he did last week, then no one will be able to stand in his way.
After a clip showing his dissection of The Big Show from last week Swagger said people should be talking about him, not the Money in the Bank Pay Per View.
He then handily combined the two subjects, and talked about how he won the last Money in the Bank Ladder Match at WrestleMania.
To bring things full circle Swagger then moans some more about how he got cheated out of the title at Fatal 4 Way, and how it’s had a massive effect on his daddy.
Thankfully The Big Show’s music hits and the giant rather gingerly walks out to the top of the ramp.
Show calls him a cry baby and tells him that no one cares, then informs him that he started something last week that he really should have finished.
Show says that he really should have made sure he got the job done last week, because as long as he’s still breathing he’s going to keep fighting, then begs Swagger to try and apply the Anklelock again.
Swagger babbles on about having nothing to prove and being fixated on reclaiming the World Title, then Show says he’s living in a dream world if he thinks he’s going to get the belt back.
He says that in Swagger’s dream world he might think he can snap his giant ankle, but Show KNOWS he can break Swagger’s jaw, which he plans on doing as he heads to the ring.
However as Show gets about half way down the ramp ‘Dashing’ Cody Rhodes shoots out from the back and Chop-Blocks the giant, leading to a 2 on 1 attack until Rey Mysterio hits the ring to make the save.
I’ll put money on a Tag Team Main Event.
Segment 2
Smackdown Money in the Bank Participants
When Teddy Long and Vickie Guerrero announced that they would be looking over the Smackdown roster to decide who was worthy of being in the Smackdown Money in the Bank match I expected some kind of try-out matches, or a tournament, or a lottery, or at least some kind of big announcement.
But no, Todd Grisham just read them out while their pictures flashed up on the Titan-Tron.
Here are the Smackdown Money in the Bank participants announced so far:
- Kane
- Matt Hardy
- ‘Dashing’ Cody Rhodes
- Christian
- Kofi Kingston
- The Big Show
There are two guys left to be revealed, so I guess there’s still time for a little flair to be added to the situation.
I’m guessing Vickie will lobby for Ziggler’s inclusion.
Match 1
Singles Match
Kofi Kingston
Vs.
Dolph Ziggler (w/Vickie Guerrero)
As Ziggler makes his way to the ring Vickie accosts him and tells him that if he wins the match tonight an Intercontinental Championship match is his.
Dolph tells her that he’s got this covered, but seems focused on something else, which turns out to be Rosa Mendez working out just around the corner.
Vickie drags him past her and accompanies him to the ring.
Matt Striker revealed that he no longer likes Kofi Kingston as Ghana knocked the USA out of the World Cup.
I bet Kofi wishes he still came from Jamaica now.
Two of WWEBlog’s favourites here.
It’s a little known fact that Ziggler almost made it into the WWEBlog banner, but was narrowly pipped to the post by Kingston as it was decided that he was likely to be more successful and Dolph’s future was in doubt at the time.
And that’s exactly what happened in this match too, as Kofi pipped Ziggler with a Trouble in Paradise after an inadvertent distraction by Vickie Guerrero.
I have to admit I’m a bit gutted, Ziggler seems to get overlooked at every turn and his future doesn’t look much safer now than it did when we put the banner together all those months ago.
After the match Vickie walked away, seemingly disgusted, as Ziggler had a temper tantrum in the ring.
Kofi Kingston wins by Pinfall.
Segment 3
Straight Edge Submission?
Backstage the Straight Edge Society are discussing their options regarding Kane, and Serena clearly isn’t happy.
She tells Punk that Kane isn’t going to stop, and all they have to do is admit *something* and it’ll all stop.
Punk says they have the situation under control, but Serena says they lost control a long time ago and it almost destroyed her to see Punk go through 10 hours of surgery after the brutal attack by the Big Red Machine last week.
Punk asks her to trust him and says that Luke will take care of Kane tonight. She says she trusts him, but if they don’t take care of it, she will.
Segment 4
The Peep Show with Matt Hardy
With the ring full of ladders and a blue briefcase hanging above, Christian announces his guest for tonight; Matt Hardy.
He tells Matt it was nice to see him in a match with Drew McIntyre last week when he didn’t get dropped on his head.
Matt says that he’s faced more adversity in his WWE career than most, but he keeps coming back because he ‘WILL NOT…’
Christian cuts him off and finishes his sentence with ‘win the Smackdown Money in the Bank Ladder Match’.
Christian says that no one deserves to win the match more than one of them two, as they put MitB on the map, but HE is going to be the one to claim the prize.
Matt says that between them they have had a plethora of gold, but neither have managed to win one of the two main Heavyweight titles, and the person who wins Money in the Bank is the most likely to do that.
Christian says that neither of them are Drew McIntyre, neither have ever been ‘the chosen one’ and both have had to scratch and claw for everything they’ve ever had, and he’s sick of seeing people come in and get everything handed to them.
Both men vow to win the match, and Matt says that when it all comes down to it he hopes he and Christian are the last two people battling at the top of the ladder.
Christian turns to leave, but then thinks better of it.
As he returns to the ring he gets caught with a right hand from Hardy, who then dumps Christian into a ladder before leaving himself.
Another promo for ‘Honest Man’ Alberto Del Rio played after this. He’s boring me already.
Segment 5
A Dashing Interview
Backstage Cody Rhodes is plumping his eyebrows and patting down his neck when he decides to give himself an impromptu interview in the mirror.
He claims that he single handedly turned The Big Show into a quivering ‘blob of mediocrity’ and said that he would prove how easily he could cash in the Money in the Bank contract when he destroys Rey Mysterio in tonight’s main event.
Match 2
Singles Match
Kane
Vs.
Luke Gallows (w/C.M Punk)
Kane was on fire in this match until the hooded member of the S.E.S interjected, it makes you wonder how his career would have panned out if someone had just bumped off The Undertaker a few years ago.
With regards to this Hooded character working with the S.E.S, I asked The Informant to do some sniffing around and see if he could find any information as to the identity of this hooded menace, but due to other commitments he couldn’t quite get to the bottom of it.
However, while I was on vacation I got a text message from an anonymous number which read:
Just to let you know, having read your Smackdown Report : The Masked S.E.S member is apparently Joey Mercury, John Morrison’s old partner in MNM.
- Unknown Number
Can this mysterious texter be trusted? I don’t know, I guess we’ll have to find out.
Anyway, Kane quickly dispatched with Gallows and the Masked Man, turning his attention to C.M Punk who had hopped up onto the apron.
As Kane looked to exact his revenge Serena stormed out from the back begging him to stop and declaring that she could prove Punk’s innocence.
Serena says that Punk couldn’t have been the one that hurt The Undertaker as on May 31st he was nowhere near the incident, as he was ‘saving’ her.
Kane says that he doesn’t believe her, so Serena puts up some video footage from a bar.
She is shown drinking heavily alongside a random guy before Punk, Gallows and the mystery man enter and lead her away.
Kane relinquishes his hold on Punk and exits the ring, leaving Serena to beg for her leaders forgiveness.
Punk screams ‘do you know what you’ve done?’ then leaves the ring himself.
Kane wins by Disqualification.
Match 3
Singles Match
M.V.P
Vs.
Chavo Guerrero
Seriously?
Chavo’s odds of winning this match must be about as long as New Zealand’s going into the World Cup.
On his way to the ring Chavo says that just like Ziggler he wants an IC title shot if he wins tonight.
I skipped through this match, but suffice to say M.V.P won with ‘The Play of the Day’ aka Paydirt.
M.V.P wins by Pinfall.
Match 4
Divas Match
Michelle McCool (w/Layla)
Vs.
Kelly Kelly (w/Tiffany)
Before the match Lay-Cool took Tiffany out of the equation by hurling her into the guard rail, then began spraying air freshener around, to play on the whole ‘Smelly Kelly’ thing. Hilarious.
The upshot here is that Tiffany recovered just in time to distract Michelle, while Kelly rolled her up for the 3.
Kelly has now beaten both of the Co-Womens Champions, so it’s likely she’ll get a title shot soon enough.
I can’t wait…*sigh*
Kelly Kelly wins by Pinfall.
Main Event Match
Tag Team Match
Rey Mysterio & The Big Show
Vs.
Jack Swagger & ‘Dashing’ Cody Rhodes
Before the match Rey did his standardised ‘I’ve fought my whole career to get to the top because I’m a little guy and no one expects the little guy to win anything’ spiel.
I really doubt anyone cares anymore.
Similarly, I wonder how the creative team came up with the Dashing thing, seriously.
I assume it was along the lines of:
‘Right guys, we need a new ‘thing’ for Cody. First he was the standard Blue Chipper, then he was Orton’s lackey, now he’s on his own we really need something else’
‘….’
‘Anyone have anything?’
‘He could… he could call himself something? Sexy.. or Handsome… or… Dashing’
‘Yeah, that’ll do, it’s lunchtime anyway’
It’s a shame too as he really was the best thing about this main event.
The best thing for Cody would have been a rivalry against his real-life brother Goldust.
Goldust has spent the past couple of years putting young guys exactly like his brother over, in some very entertaining matches.
Sure, Cody’s time in Legacy should have been enough to put him firmly within the upper-midcard when he and DiBiase went their separate ways, but a victorious run against Goldust, with an angle built up around sibling rivalry would have worked perfectly.
Maybe it’s in the pipeline eventually, I don’t know, but if they don’t do it I think they’ve really missed a trick.
Rhodes and Swagger actually worked really well together in this match so I was a little disappointed when they lost by disqualification.
For the second week running Swagger refused to relinquish an Anklelock despite Mysterio being in the ropes for the entirety of the move, and the referee had no choice but to call for the bell.
Show was unable to make the save due to his own ankle injury, which Cody Rhodes had made worse during an assault on the outside.
What’s with giving these ‘real athletes’ the Anklelock anyway? Are they trying to turn Swagger into a new Kurt Angle?
The show ended with Big Show apologising to Rey for not being able to make the save, while Swagger and Cody beamed like Cheshire cats at the top of the ramp.
Rey Mysterio & The Big Show win by Disqualification.
