The Raw Review & Roster Draft 2010
Hello everyone and welcome to the LIVE Raw Review and Roster Draft!
It’s been a while since we’ve done a live Raw, and even longer since we’ve covered a roster draft, so forgive me if I’m a little rusty.
As with last year, we’re going to put all the drafts in fancy little boxes, like the ones below:
XXX Drafted to RAW.
XXX Drafted to SMACKDOWN.
so if you’re scanning for the drafts these are what to look out for.
Alternatively you can go to our WWE Draft 2010 page for a no-nonsense look at who’s been moved where.
With that cleared up, lets get on with the show!
Opening Match
WWE Unified Tag Team Championship Match
ShowMiz (c)
Vs.
The Hart Dynasty (w/Natalya & Bret Hart)
Alright, so we’re kicking off with the Unified Tag titles match that The Hart Dynasty earned themselves last night at Extreme Rules.
The Miz grabs a microphone and moans about the way in which they were bullied last night by Teddy Long.
He says that The Dynasty are only in the position that they are in now because of Uncle Bret, then bursts into a tirade about how The Hart Family are complete losers.
He demands that Bret come to the ring and declare ShowMiz the greatest team in WWE History (as he said he would if Kidd lost a few weeks ago on Smackdown.)
Bret struts out onto the top of the ramp to a standing ovation.
He says that as he’s a man of his word, he declares that ShowMiz is the greatest tag team of all time, then follows up by saying that The Mountie was the greatest Intercontinental Champion of all time and that David Arquette was the greatest World Champion of all time.
He calls The Miz a horse-faced idiot and says that he could say anything he liked, but talk is cheap and in a few minutes ShowMiz are going to have no choice but to call The Hart Dynasty the new world tag team champions.
The match is now under-way and D.H Smith just hit a ridiculously delayed standing Supplex, then followed up with a big Shoulder Block on the outside as the action cuts to commercials.
We’re back from commercials now and surprise surprise, ShowMiz have taken control during the break.
After taking a huge beating from Show, Tyson Kidd battles back against The Miz, who took far too long showboating and not enough time on the offensive.
King and Striker seem to be on each other’s cases tonight, I hope it stays that way, it’s been too long since we’ve had a decent bickering commentary team.
Kidd finally makes the tag to DH, who wipes the floor with Miz and looks to finish him with a Running Powerslam!
Miz reverses it and both men score 2 counts with reversals.
Miz hits a big boot and goes for the cover using the ropes, but Bret Hart pushes his feet off and the match continues!
Show makes a bee line for Hart but Kidd cuts him off!
HART ATTACK!
Kidd locks on the Sharp Shooter, could The Hart Dynasty be crowned the new champions tonight?!
YES! Miz taps! We’ve got NEW Unified Tag Team champions!
Great match and a fantastic result for possibly the best up and coming team in the WWE right now. This bout would have been much more at home on last night’s Extreme Rules card, instead of the dull Cryme Tyme Strap match.
The Hart Dynasty win by Submission and become the NEW Unified Tag Team Champions.
Segment 1
ShowMiz No More
During the commercials the team of ShowMiz officially imploded.
Show and Miz stood in the ring together, with the big man seething.
Eventually he swung his big right hand and floored The Miz, effectively ending what I thought was a great tag team that could have gone on for months more.
Segment 2
Jack Swagger Interviewed
Backstage Josh Mathews asked Jack Swagger about his victory last night.
Swagger talked himself up, saying he cut The Viper’s head off last night before talking about his glittering GPA in Finance.
Just as Mathews went to ask another question Edge showed up.
He told Swagger that he should be worrying about the fact HE’s next in line for his championship, should he still be on Smackdown come the end of the night.
Match 2
Divas Draft Pick Tag Team Match
Lay-Cool (w/Vickie Guerrero)
Vs.
Eve & Maryse
This is a Raw Vs. Smackdown match where the winning brand gets a Divas draft pick.
I’d have to say Lay-Cool look to be the favourites on paper, given that Eve and Maryse can’t stand each other, but I guess we’ll see.
Less than two minutes in and the Raw divas are brawling on the outside. However, after getting the better of Maryse, Eve’s back in the ring and competing.
Maryse tagged in, but took too long talking and lost to a Big Boot from Michelle.
Lay-Cool win by Pinfall.
Kelly Kelly Drafted to SMACKDOWN.
Match 3
Draft Pick Singles Match
Evan Bourne
Vs.
C.M Punk (w/The Straight Edge Society)
This is the second draft pick match that seems a little predictable.
Punk is a 3 time former world champ, he’s got a successful faction and he’s coming off a big PPV win. Evan Bourne is at best a mid-carder who has spent the last year filling gaps on Raw and Superstars.
That said, Bourne’s had the better of it so far, even taking out Punk and Gallows in one fell swoop.
CannonBall Knee from Bourne, he’s setting up for the Splash….
Serena’s distracting the ref, and here comes the ‘mystery assailant’ (aka Skip Sheffield) through the crowd.
The mystery man pushes Bourne from the top rope allowing Punk to hit the GTS and win a second pick for Smackdown!
C.M Punk wins by Pinfall.
The Big Show Drafted to SMACKDOWN.
Segment 3
Congrat-Show-Lations
Backstage Teddy Long approaches The Big Show and congratulates him on being drafted to Smackdown.
Show looks at him silently, unnerving the General Manager.
Long asks him if there’s anything he can do for him, and Show eventually breaks his silence with a huge hug and the assurance that he’s fine.
With Show gone Teddy dances a victory dance, clearly happy with how things are going so far.
Segment 4
Sheamus Talks Extreme Rules
Sheamus is in the ring now, talking about how he ended Triple H’s career last night at Extreme Rules.
He says that with Triple H behind him it’s time for him to move on, to the WWE Championship.
Just as The Celtic Warrior goes to call out Cena, Randy Orton’s music cuts him off.
Orton joins Sheamus in the ring and after a fairly loud RKO chant dies down, tells him that no one despised Triple H as much as him, but when he met The Game he did it like a man; Face to face.
Orton says that he deserves a shot at the gold most, but Sheamus discredits this, telling him he had his chance last night and if he doesn’t get out of the ring he’ll put him on the sidelines like he did to Triple H.
Orton suggests he hit Sheamus with an RKO and Punt his head off, drawing huge cheers from the crowd.
Sheamus says he doesn’t deal with losers, assuring Orton that HE’ll be the one to get a title match as he began to exit the ring.
John Cena’s music stops him in his tracks and the champ hits the top of the ramp.
Cena makes a big deal of how tonight’s show doesn’t have a guest host and takes a ‘phone call’ from WWE head office, poking fun at how pale Sheamus is.
He then reveals that the powers that be have said the only person who can decide who gets a shot at the WWE Championship is… The WWE Champion.
He puts Sheamus and Orton in a #1 Contendership match tonight and the pair try to hit each other with their finishers, to no avail.
Match 4
Ten Man Battle Royal Draft Pick Match
Smackdown
Drew McIntyre
Rey Mysterio
Kane
R-Truth
Shad
Raw
Mark Henry
M.V.P
Yoshi Tatsu
Ted DiBiase
Santino Marrella
A massive three picks are on the line here, so Raw could easily swing things in their favour in one fell swoop if one of their competitors claim the win.
To win this match ALL members of one brand have to be eliminated, so technically the teams should all work together.
I have to admit it’s unlike any battle royal I’ve ever seen, but it does give me a chance to bring out our elimination boxes!
Elimination : Drew McIntyre
McIntyre pretty much eliminated himself, attempting to take Tatsu out of the game but instead flipping over the top.
Elimination : Yoshi Tatsu
Tatsu’s elimination came almost instantly after McIntyre’s and makes me wonder if they were meant to just fly over the top together.
Elimination : M.V.P
Elimination : R-Truth
Elimination : Shad
Elimination : Mark Henry
Elimination : Kane
All of those eliminations came thick and fast. The upshot is that Mysterio is the only person left for Smackdown at this point, while DiBiase and Santino remain for Raw.
While things rumble on I’ll take this opportunity to slip in a final ‘Informant’s Cheap Shot’ that we didn’t get chance to cover last night:
Ted DiBiase is set to get his own faction, named ‘The Fortunate Sons’.
A members list is still undecided, but The son of Mr. Perfect Curt Hennig is one name on the shortlist.
- The Informant
Elimination : Rey Mysterio
Ted DiBiase dumped Rey over the top rope and earned Raw three picks, before attacking Santino with Dream Street.
Raw wins the Draft Pick Battle Royal.
John Morrison Drafted to RAW.
R-Truth Drafted to RAW.
Edge Drafted to RAW.
Match 5
Draft Pick Singles Match
Chris Jericho
Vs.
Christian (w/ Heath Slater)
Jericho, who is walking with a rather pronounced limp, grabs a microphone before the match and moans about how Edge tried to injure him at Extreme Rules last night.
He demands that whoever is in charge of Edge now he’s been drafted do something about it, then shoulders some of the blame, saying he was off his game thanks to losing to a no-name Rookie on NXT.
Jericho blames Slater for his loss last night, then tells the Rookie to come to the ring and apologise.
Slater hits the ring and apologises for the fact that Jericho hasn’t been able to win a match for the past week, not quite what Jericho had in mind I don’t think.
As Christian made his way down the ramp Slater dumped Jericho to the outside, infuriating the self-proclaimed face of Smackdown as the match gets under way.
Jericho’s in control as the action returns from the commercials, he goes for the Lionsault but Christian dodges it and the momentum turns.
Christian sets up for the KillSwitch…. but no, Jericho escapes it.
Running Enziguri from Jericho, 1..2.. Christian barely kicks out.
Christian looks for the KillSwitch again but Jericho escapes and goes for the Walls of Jericho, locking it on at the second time of asking.
Christian crawls to the rope and breaks the hold, leaving Jericho thinking that he won the match.
Realisation comes swiftly for Jericho in the form of a big right hand from Christian.
Christian heads to the top and flies…. but Jericho catches him!
CodeBreaker! 1..2..3!
Smackdown have another pick to even things up!
After the bell Jericho assaulted Heath Slater, catching him with a CodeBreaker too.
Then, Smackdown’s latest draft hit the ring and knocked Jericho out with some Trouble in Paradise.
Chris Jericho wins by Pinfall.
Kofi Kingston Drafted to SMACKDOWN.
Match 6
Draft Pick Singles Match
John Morrison
Vs.
Jack Swagger
Morrison’s wasted no time switching allegiances to Raw and will be wrestling on their behalf for a draft pick in this match.
Swagger lost to Morrison on Smackdown last week and I can’t really see them having the champ job two weeks running, even if it is against someone the calibre of Morrison.
I was grabbing a bite to eat for the majority of this match, but if you want to know roughly what happened check out the match they had last Friday, it wasn’t a million miles away from it up until the end.
Morrison damaged his ribs in the middle of the match and although he fought on valiantly and almost picked up the win following a Flying Chuck and a Knee to the face, Swagger avoided Starship Pain and landed the Gutwrench Powerbomb for the win and the Smackdown pick.
Jack Swagger wins by Pinfall.
Christian Drafted to SMACKDOWN.
Segment 5
DiBiase’s Scouting
Backstage in the locker room Ted DiBiase is scouting for an ‘aide’ to carry his bags and watch his back etc.
He asks Carlito who knocks him back, then attempts to get R-Truth on side.
Truth says that DiBiase is looking for a ‘Virgil’ just like his daddy had.
DiBiase says that he’s nothing like his father and they would have a completely different arrangement where Truth does what he says and in return he gives him lots of money.
Truth initially seems interested by the ‘lots of money’ section of the proposition, but then slaps the taste out of DiBiase’s mouth and tells him that he isn’t interested.
Match 7
Draft Pick Singles Match
Dolph Ziggler
Vs.
Hornswoggle
This final draft pick match lasted about 15 seconds and saw Hornswoggle win by count-out.
Ziggler went crazy after the result and locked the Sleeper on the little guy, choking him out in seconds.
What a surprise, the draft picks are now level.
Hornswoggle wins by Pinfall.
Chris Jericho Drafted to RAW.
Segment 6
The Animal Enraged
Just as the #1 contendership main event was being announced Batista stormed to the ring ready to wrestle and barked about how he should still be #1 contender.
He demanded Cena give him a re-match as the outcome of last night’s match was a joke (I have to say I agree on that point.)
Sheamus hit the ring and told Batista to give it up, but The Animal refused to budge.
Orton is next to hit the ring. He says that ever since they were in Evolution all Batista has done is whine and moan, so tonight he’ll make him a deal.
Orton proposes that he beats Sheamus, then takes on Batista for the #1 contendership.
The three bicker until Cena turns the main event into a Triple Threat match, which starts immediately.
Main Event Match
WWE Championship #1 Contendership Match
Randy Orton
Vs.
Sheamus
Vs.
Batista
It’s felt like an awfully long night to say we’ve only had 8 drafts.
As far as the picks go, I’d have to say Raw has come off by far the best.
The Red brand has acquired three main event quality Superstars (and R-Truth) while Smackdown have got a selection of mid-carders and the only diva to be drafted thus far.
No doubt the supplemental draft will even things out slightly, but if history has taught us anything it’s that ALL the main even transfers take place on the live show, meaning it’s all down the card from here.
Anyway, back to this main event match, which has been your run of the mill Triple Threat bout thus far.
The action has returned from the final commercial break and Sheamus seems to be in complete control of Randy Orton, with Batista down on the outside.
All three men have exchanged control of the match in the past few minutes, Orton coming close to victory with the Rope-Hung DDT on Batista.
Sheamus prevents Orton from hitting The Animal with the RKO, which immediately comes back to haunt the Celtic Warrior as he catches a Spear while going for the Pale Justice on Orton.
RKO on Sheamus!
Wait, what the hell?!
Edge just hit the ring and Speared Orton right out of his boots!
Batista makes the cover, 1..2..3!
The Animal is #1 Contender once more, but what the hell was that all about?
Sure Edge and Orton have a history, but they are both pretty much fan favourites at the minute, there’s not really any cause for them to feud.
It’ll be interesting to see who assumes the role of the bad guy when this feud develops, I’d have to put my money on Edge following this.
Batista wins by Pinfall and becomes the #1 Contender for the WWE Championship.
