    The Raw Review

    Opening Segment

    Bob Barker…Come on Down!

Howard Finkel introduces Bob Barker who enters to the Price is Right theme tune while ‘The Price is RAW’ is emblazoned behind him on the board next to the entrance.

For any UK fans wondering who Bob Barker is, think Bruce Forcythe only American; past it but doesn’t know when to hang it up basically.

Bob says he wants to play a pricey game tonight, but for that he needs contestants. He asks Howard Finkel to get him 4 contestants, and the Fink calls down Santino Marella, Jillian Hall, I.R.S and Chris Jericho.

Santino, Jillian and IRS all make their way to their podiums from out of the crowd, some more excited than others. However, Jericho takes his sweet time and finally emerges from behind the curtain, looking less than impressed.

The first item they are bidding on is the ‘Best of Smackdown 3 disc DVD’ which comes out September 15th, nice little plug there.

Santino asks to buy a vowel and Bob tells him he’s got the wrong show, Santino admits he isn’t very good with numbers, then bids $1465. No not $14.65, $1465.

Jillian says she’s a huge Bob Barker fan and says she wants to sing for him. He foolishly lets her and she butchers ‘I will always love you’ before singing a bid of $75.

I.R.S asks if the bid includes taxes, then bids $50 inc. Tax.

Finally Bob asks ‘Chris’ for a bid. Jericho says nothing but instead jumps up onto the stage and squares up with tonight’s guest host.

Bob tells him his mother wouldn’t be proud of the way he is behaving and Jericho tells him to watch his mouth.

Jericho then ‘explains’ to him that no one calls him ‘Chris’ and Barker needs to call him Mr. Jericho and pander to him because he is the best in the world at what he does.

Jericho says he is ‘one half of the…’ before Bob cuts him off and accepts ‘one’ as his bid. $1 dollar.

Bob reveals the DVD is worth $18.95 meaning Jericho wins and has a chance to win a 5 night vacation in Hawaii.

All Jericho has to do is beat his opponent in the opening match; M.V.P.

    Match 1

    Singles Match
    Chris Jericho
    Vs.
    M.V.P

An interesting start to Raw, Barker is shaping up to be quite an interesting host in comparison to some of the duds who have done it so far.

Fast and furious action to kick off too, with a trip to Hawaii of all things on the line.

Back and forth action in this match, with neither guy really getting a distinct upper hand.

Jericho reverses Ballin’ and locks in the Walls of Jericho, which M.V.P reverses into a roll-up that grabs a 2 count. Seconds later M.V.P hits a  big kick and gets another long 2 count.

Jericho reverses the Playmaker and goes for the CodeBreaker, but M.V.P uses the ropes to prevent it then quickly floats over his opponent into a pinfall for the victory.

    No Hawaii for Jericho.

    M.V.P wins by Pinfall.

    Segment 2

    Bob’s Charitable Plug and DX

Keeping in line with pretty much every other guest host on the show so far, Bob Barker has something to plug; his book.

However, unlike the other ones the item he’s pushing is strictly for charity, specifically the DJ&T Foundation which subsidises spay/neuters for dogs across America.

DX then enter and say they are huge fans and they loved his performance in Happy Gilmore (as did I).

HBK asks how they go about getting Rhodes and DiBiase neutered and he tells them they will get their chance on Sunday, but for now they can let out their frustration by spinning the big wheel to find out who their opponents are tonight.

HBK presses the button and spins Chris Masters while Triple H spins Randy Orton, nice.

They didn’t make it clear whether it would be two singles matches or a tag team match, so for the moment I’ll assume two singles matches.

EDIT: I assumed wrong, it’s a tag team match.

    Match 2

    Singles Match
    Chavo Guerrero
    Vs.
    Evan Bourne

Could it possibly be that Chavo actually has a real match tonight, and not some joke loss to Hornswoggle? It certainly looks that way with the more than competent Evan Bourne booked as his opponent.

Before the match Bob Barker tells Chavo that if he wins tonight not only does he get the victory, but he gets a brand new Red Corvette.

Chavo seems motivated, taking out Bourne from the get-go despite all the crowd’s support being firmly behind the former ECW high-flyer.

Bourne battles back and hits an impressive standing Huricanrana, followed by a flying clothesline and a springboard Wheel Kick to grab a 2 count.

Bourne goes for a top rope Huricanrana this time, but somehow Chavo manages to leap out of the way leaving his rival to crash first onto the top rope and then down to the mat with high velocity.

Chavo hits the 3 Amigo’s and heads to the top rope, looking for the Frog Splash.

Looks like I spoke too soon earlier, Hornswoggle emerges with a Super-Soaker and distracts Chavo just long enough for Bourne to roll him up and grab a victory.

So that’s a trip to Hawaii and a Red Corvette that Bob Barker has failed to give away so far tonight.

    Evan Bourne wins by Pinfall.

    Match 3

    Singles Match
    John Cena
    Vs.
    Cody Rhodes

Before the match Cody grabbed a microphone and confirmed that he is still a member of Legacy.

He says that he doesn’t agree with what Orton did to his father, but the fact is that Dusty Rhodes didn’t make him a main eventer; Randy Orton did.

He said he could lie and paint Dusty as a terrible father but he isn’t and what it came down to was career Vs. family.

Cody wraps it up by saying on Sunday you’ll see that he made the right decision and as a gift to Orton he’s going to make Cena tap out right now.

Cena makes his entrance and the match gets under-way… right into a commercial break.

When the action resumed Cena was in control, however that didn’t last long as Cody took advantage on the outside and strung together some strong offence to maintain dominance, including a very nicely executed rolling leg pick into a submission attempt.

Rhodes continued to look impressive, controlling Cena with a Chin-lock and an Arm-bar while King and Cole discussed how the match at Breaking Point between Cena and Orton could well be a deadlock as neither man is likely to submit.

Cena refuses to tap and battles out conveniently into the set-up for an Attitude Adjustment, but Rhodes manages to avoid it by sliding back to his feet.

Cena leaps from the top rope, going for a Leg Drop but Rhodes avoids it and goes for a Figure 4 which Cena reverses into an Anklelock and then STF.

Randy Orton! Orton slides in before Rhodes can tap out but the referee calls for the bell and Orton slithers back out of the ring, avoiding any sort of physical competition.

Rhodes tries to take advantage of the distraction but instead gets hit with an Attitude Adjustment as Orton watches on from the ramp.

    John Cena wins by Disqualification.

    Segment 3

    More Price is RAW

Bob and the 3 remaining contestants are back out on the stage, so it must be time for some more Price is RAW!

Bob asks the Fink for another contestant and he introduces Chicago White Sox’ A.J Pierzynski (I’m glad they put his name up on the screen, I’d have been sat here all night trying to spell that) the crowd boo and grumble furiously as he makes his way to the empty podium.

Bob asks A.J if he’s a real WWE fan and of course he says that he is.

This round they are bidding on a WrestleMania XXVI gold package, I wouldn’t mind one of those if there are any generous WWEBlog.co.uk fans out there.

    A.J bids $1000.

    I.R.S doubles it with $2000.

    Jillian sings $5000.

    Santino bids a conservative $1200.

Bob reveals the actual price as $1247 and Santino explodes with excitement. I suppose that’s one way for Santino to be involved in WMXXVI.

Santino now has the chance to win a brand new hot tub, demonstrated very effectively by the Bella Twins (They’ve been demonstrating everything tonight, but this has been the only one worth mentioning) in a Bodyslam contest against… The Big Show. (I’d written that before he’d even been announced, it was pretty obvious though.)

    Match 4

    Bodyslam Contest
    Santino Marella
    Vs.
    The Big Show

Unsurprisingly this one didn’t last long and went in favour of The Big Show.

There seemed to be some confusion after Show had Bodyslammed Santino, with Bob Barker jabbering on about not knowing if the contest was over despite witnessing the whole thing from the top of the ramp.

When he eventually figured out The Big Show had won, he said they had found him another opponent for a second Bodyslam contest; Mark Henry.

The Big Show wins by Bodyslam.

    Match 5

    Bodyslam Contest
    Mark Henry
    Vs.
    The Big Show

Henry and Show begin this match by slugging it out, neither of them getting a clear advantage or the chance to Bodyslam the other.

Show is the first to go for a Bodyslam, but fails to lift the World’s Strongest Man who goes for one himself with similar results.

As King and Cole debate whether either of these two guys will even fit in the hot tub that is on the line, Henry actually manages to lift Show and convincingly Bodyslam him, giving a distinct advantage to the team of Henry/M.V.P going in to the Tag Title match at Breaking Point.

    Mark Henry wins by Bodyslam.

    Segment 4

Bob Barker Interviewed and Chavo Demands a Car

Josh Mathews asks Bob what the most unusual thing ever to happen on The Price is Right was and tonight’s guest host tells an anecdote about a contestant who fell out of her tube top due to excitement at being chosen as a contestant, accompanied by a censored clip.

Mathews then asks if Bob has ever been hurt filming a game show and once again he tells a few stories about over-excited contestants accidentally injuring him.

One last plug is thrown in for Bob’s book before Mathews wraps up the segment.

After some commercials and hype for Breaking Point the we head backstage where Chavo bursts into Barker’s office and begins ranting about Bourne and Hornswoggle cheating earlier tonight.

Chavo demands his car and Bob tells him that isn’t possible as he didn’t win it.

Chavo asks him if he thinks he’s a tough guy and Bob reveals the secret of a real fighter is the element of surprise; drilling him in the gut and knocking him down with a karate chop.

I have to admit despite not really knowing him all that well, Bob Barker has probably been one of my favourite Raw guest hosts, I take back the comment I made about him being past it.

    Main Event Match

    Tag Team Match
    DX
    Vs.
    Randy Orton & Chris Masters

Orton and Masters are shown backstage talking tactics before a commercial, I’ve a feeling they’ll work together quite well.

DX deliver their usual spiel before the match, this week tailoring it to their Breaking Point opponents; Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase.

A bit more breaking news as Orton makes his way to the ring, Trish Stratus will be next week’s guest host and Batista will be back on Raw for a special announcement.

HBK and Masters kick off the main event although with all the entrances, promos and breaking news updates there isn’t that much of the show for the actual match itself, which cuts straight to a commercial break.

When the action return Randy Orton is at the mercy of HBK, although the leader of Legacy soon turns it around and before long he and Masters have HBK isolated in their corner.

Orton goads Triple H then stalks Michaels and hits a picture-perfect Dropkick before locking on a Sleeper.

Michaels eventually battles out and hits a Flying Clothesline, kicking off a ‘who can make the tag first’ scenario.

Orton is first to make the tag but before Masters can get into the ring HBK pops up and tags in The Game, who immediately takes control of the match.

Orton attempts to get into the ring but doesn’t actually do so, distracting Triple H long enough for Masters to make it back to his feet.

Triple H hits a big Spinebuster before tagging in HBK who hits the elbow from the top rope.

Michaels begins to set up the Sweet Chin Music but Orton cuts him off and gets knocked to the outside for his troubles.

As Triple H also heads to the outside Masters reverses the Sweet Chin and locks in the Masterlock.

Just as it looks like Shawn might be out cold Triple H re-enters the ring and breaks up the hold, then HBK hits the Sweet Chin Music seconds later.

The match ends with stereo submission holds from DX, and no sooner had Masters tapped than Rhodes and DiBiase were there to get their leader out of harms way.

As DX and Priceless brawled up the ramp and to the back, Orton hid behind a curtain and made his way back out onto the ramp after the danger had passed.

The two teams are then shown brawling through the backstage area and out into the parking lot.

DiBiase and Rhodes steal some random crew members car and drive away, while Randy Orton begins to talk in the ring.

Orton says all 3 Legacy members will be victorious at Breaking Point, prompting the entrance of John Cena who sprints to the ring and starts a brawl between the two.

Orton quickly hit the rope-assisted DDT before sliding to the outside and grabbing a steel chair which he set up in the ring and RKO’d Cena onto.

A good Raw although a slightly muddled conclusion with two separate rivalries bleeding into one another, Barker was one of the best Guest Hosts there have been so far although his segments feel like they were an age ago with that overly long main event and aftermath.

    DX win by Submission.
