Segment 1
Strikers Ashley’s Introduction
Big news this week on NXT! Matt Striker seems to have relinquished the hosting duties, at least temporarily, to Ashley Valence.
No, I’ve never heard of her before either, but she’s got one of those screechy voices that I really can’t help but loathe, so as much as I hate to say it, come back Striker, all is forgiven!
She introduced the Pros and got out of the ring for the first match.
Where do they find them? Seriously?
Match 1
Tag Team Match
Percy Watson & M.V.P
Vs.
Alex Riley & The Miz
I have to admit that Watson is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me.
I can see why people wouldn’t like him, and when I first saw him I thought I’d be one of those who couldn’t stand him, but actually he’s probably my favourite rookie of Season 2 so far.
So when I saw he’d be taking on Riley and Miz in this opener, I wasn’t too pleased.
Riley is being pushed as the favourite (and with good reason from what I’ve seen so far) and The Miz is arguably the biggest Pro involved in Season 2, so it came as no surprise when they picked up the 1..2..3 courtesy of the Skull Crushing Finale.
However, nothing for Watson to be ashamed of here as he and the other three guys put on a very good opener here.
Alex Riley & The Miz win by Pinfall.
Match 2
Singles Match
Titus O’Neil (w/ Zack Ryder)
Vs.
Michael McGillicuty (w/ Kofi Kingston)
I’m past caring if I’ve spelled Hennig’s ring name correctly any more and it’s probably for the best as I didn’t have much time to consider it here.
O’Neil failed to impress me once again and ended up losing a very short match to the McGilli-Cutter.
2-0 for Perfect Jr.
Michael McGillicutty wins by Pinfall.
Match 3
Singles Match
Kaval (w/ Lay-Cool)
Vs.
Eli Cottonwood (w/ John Morrison)
Cottonwood surprised me in his first match, as I expected a big, lumbering Khali-type guy, and actually he’s bizarrely athletic for someone of that stature.
I wondered how long it’d be before they went for the David Vs. Goliath angle and the answer is 3 weeks.
Both guys looked very impressive and I could have happily watched this one for another 10 minutes, but due to there being an unprecedented 4 matches on tonight’s show, it was a fairly short affair.
Kaval came close after a modified Warriors Way Stomp, but Cottonwood picked up the win with a kind of Reverse Chokeslam.
2-0 for the NXT Giant.
Eli Cottonwood wins by Pinfall.
Segment 2
Lucky’s Story & Kaval’s Gift
Finally we get to hear about Lucky Cannon’s amazing backstory.
Apparently he went to help a friend who was in trouble, got blasted over the back of the head with a lead pipe (people really do that?), ended up in hospital in a coma and had to learn to walk and even talk again.
Backstage Lay-Cool try to cheer Kaval up after his second loss on NXT.
They bought him a pink t-shirt that says ‘Property of Lay-Cool’, which he feigns interest in.
Main Event Match
Singles Match
Lucky Cannon (w/ Mark Henry)
Vs.
Cody Rhodes (w/ Husky Harris)
Despite having to listen to Ashley Valence doing Matt Striker’s job, we’re not lucky enough to have a Striker-free show, as he joins the commentary team for this last match.
Just as the match is about to begin, Cody Rhodes grabs a microphone.
He says that tonight’s match is going to be a 5 minute challenge. Basically all Cannon has to do is last 5 minutes in the ring with Rhodes.
Rhodes dominated for the first few minutes, but Cannon came to life about half way through and almost stole a pinfall around the 3 minute mark.
However, a moments hesitation cost him and after getting hit with a springboard kick he fell victim to the Cross Rhodes.
Good showing from Cannon in this first Rookie Vs. Pro match.
Cody Rhodes wins by Pinfall.
Closing Segment
Rookies Final Statements
Perhaps Ashley didn’t do a very good job opening the show, or maybe this was the plan all along, but Striker reclaims his hosting duties for this final segment.
Each Rookie gets 45 seconds to state why they deserve not to be voted off next week.
Riley starts by endearing himself to the voting public by calling them nerds and babbling about shoving them in lockers.
Kaval steps forward next in his nice pink shirt.
He says that 10 years ago the WWE told him that he was too small to wrestle in their company, and now he’s made it into NXT.
He ran out of time but carried on talking until they cut his microphone off.
Titus O’Neil played the ‘one of you’ card, saying that just like the people in the crowd he’s had to work hard to get where he is.
McGillicutty droned on about how he doesn’t have any weaknesses. He’s pretty boring actually.
Eli Cottonwood basically said that his actions would speak louder than his words.
‘Showtime’ Percy Watson used his 45 seconds well, entertaining the crowd with his fast-talking, camp chatter.
Cannon played on the fact that he’s lucky to even be alive and said that the fact he can appreciate all he has is what sets him apart from the rest.
Finally Husky Harris said that he wouldn’t need 45 seconds, before drilling Striker and hitting him with the Senton.
