Main Event: Kingston & McGillicutty Vs. Henry & Cannon

    Segment 1

    Strikers Introduction

Striker started the show by bringing everyone out to the ring, to address how last week’s show ended and the repercussions that it may have.

As the Rookies entered it kinda sounded like they were going to take on the Pros tonight, with Cole commenting that the strangest match-up would undoubtedly be a possible bout between Kaval and Lay-Cool.

Striker says that instead of explaining for them, he’s going to let the Pros explain why they attacked the Rookies last week.

M.V.P kicks off by telling the Rookies to relax, as there isn’t going to be a confrontation.

He explains that last week’s attack was an initiation because in the WWE you never get given anything for free.

He also admitted that in some ways they had paid for the transgressions of their predecessors, taking a beating to stop them becoming like the Season 1 guys.

He proposes that they all let bygones be bygones and start afresh, which all the Rookies accept by shaking hands or embracing their Pros.

Striker then pulls Kaval and Alex Riley forward and tells them that they have a big chance to impress tonight as they face each other…next!

    Match 1

    Singles Match
    Kaval
    Vs.
    Alex Riley

Before the match Lay-Cool introduced a promo video for their ‘cute’ Rookie, and we found out a little bit more about Kaval.

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him perform live, and I have to say he was very impressive, although how he’ll cope with all the WWE restrictions in place I’m not sure.

Layla and Michelle joined the commentary team and did their whole ditzy/bitchy thing, but in their defence they did push Kaval a fair bit and so far I have to admit they aren’t as bad as I thought they’d be.

For some reason or another The Miz is nowhere to be seen so far, which is kind of surprising given that this is his Rookies ‘Big Shot’ to impress.

Kaval really impressed me in this match, his in ring ability is by far and away the best I’ve seen on NXT to this point and he completely dominated this match.

So, as you’d expect, it was Riley that stole a win, hitting a Mark Mero TKO out of nowhere and completely against the run of the match.

Afterwards Matt Striker hopped into the ring and asked Riley how he felt winning without his Pro being present. He said that Miz was out partying because of his US Championship win and he was happy to take care of business himself.

Striker then asked Lay-Cool what they thought. They said that Kaval did a good job and with a little bit of their help he could be ‘Flawless’.

Striker asked the Pros what they thought next, starting with Morrison.

He made a joke about Miz being at a lipo consultation which fell completely flat, then said that both men were impressive.

Zack Ryder said that he only cared about his own Rookie, but if the new ring announcer wanted a date she should call him.

Following the match we were treated to a promo video for Eli Cottonwood. They seem to be gearing him up with a Snitzky/Mike Knox kind of gimmick; a big guy who enjoys inflicting pain.

    Alex Riley wins by Pinfall.

    Segment 2

    Making Up

After a catch up of last night’s Raw some rather voyeuristic footage played showing Zack Ryder and Titus O’Neil making up after their altercation last week, and a softer side of Ryder who promised to do all he can to help his Rookie win.

    Main Event Match

    Tag Team Match
    Kofi Kingston & Michael McGillicutty
    Vs.
    Mark Henry & Lucky Cannon

I watched this one pretty much completely and I have to say both Rookies looked very good.

Last season it was quite easy to pick where the Rookies strengths and weaknesses were, for example Otunga was much weaker in the ring than someone like Justin Gabriel, but outstripped him on the microphone.

This season nearly every Rookie has impressed me in the ring, with the possible exception of Titus O’Neil who I found a bit average in his first match.

With the fans supposedly having a say this time around I expect it to be more about the microphone work than the in-ring ability, which is why I’m expecting Percy Watson to go far, as he’s the most charismatic and isn’t bad in the ring either.

However, whether the fans will have as much sway as we’ve been led to believe is another matter.

MM scored the win in this match, beating Cannon with a very nice Spinning Neckbreaker.

Perhaps they’ll call it the McGilli-cutter.

Following the bell Striker asked Kingston what he made of his rookie and unsurprisingly he sang his praises.

Striker then asked Henry what he made of Lucky Cannon and he did pretty much the same thing, saying Cannon has a long journey but he thinks he’ll get there.

Striker then threw things to the top of the ramp, first asking Cody Rhodes what he thought.

Cody singled out Lucky Cannon and reprimanded him for looking so happy in defeat and shaking McGillicutty’s hand after the bell.

He accused him of being all style and no substance, prompting Mark Henry to jump in and challenge the 3rd generation Superstar on behalf of his Rookie.

Rhodes said that Cannon would be lucky to last 5 minutes in the ring with him, then accepted the challenge, but said he needed a week to get ready.

Striker asked Rhodes what they could expect from him in a weeks time.

Rather than answering Rhodes drilled Striker across the back, knocking him from the staging to the concrete ending a pretty decent show on a low note.

Kofi Kingston & Michael McGillicutty win by Pinfall.
