Segment 1
Striker’s Introduction and The Rookie Challenge
After bringing out the Pro’s to start the show, Striker asked a couple of them what they thought about last week’s Poll.
Ryder said that his Rookie was robbed and generally pointed the finger at everyone else, including the Universe, for his demise.
John Morrison said that he thought it was cool the WWE Universe got to vote, then said he agreed with Ryder that the wrong person left, as he would have voted for The Miz.
Striker then brought the Rookies to the ring.
On his way down Alex Riley stole one of Lay-Cool’s clipboards, although at this point I’m not quite sure why.
Matt kicked off by asking Husky Harris what he needed to do to avoid being the next person to get the chop.
Harris said that Striker should know just how dangerous he is and that no one could do anything about it.
Husky Harris doesn’t seem to be able to talk properly, kinda as if he is always out of breath, but maybe it’s a ploy to further his ‘simple’ image.
Next Alex Riley complained about Kaval coming top of the poll and claimed it was a fluke, but dropped a clanger by referring to Vince McMahon as his boss, which Cole diligently covered for by reminding everyone none of these guys are currently on contract.
Kaval fired back by saying Riley should listen to the crowd when he’s in the ring, then he’d realise it was no fluke.
We finally got onto the Rookie Challenge, which is the talkie one that Wade Barrett won season year.
The prize this season is the chance to host a chat show segment on next week’s NXT.
Not a theme song that never materialises then.
Percy Watson kicked off with the topic ‘Glasses’.
He talked about his own personal glasses, saying they gave him the vision to know where he’s going and see what he wants to achieve.
He then spent the 2nd half laughing and spouting catchphrases.
Man I love this guy!
Kaval got the topic ‘Chicken’ and said it was something that just couldn’t exist in the WWE, confirming that he wasn’t a chicken.
He struggled a little, in short.
Eli Cottonwood had the pleasure of talking about ‘moustache’ and said he was the only one capable of growing one, and he would do to prove he was a man, not like the other ‘boys’ in the competition.
I really think these bits might be off the cuff, because he really looked like he was struggling with that one, and his Pro John Morrison was visibly cringing at what he came out with.
McGillicutty went next and spoke about ‘breath’, or rather didn’t speak about breath and instead just reminded everyone of his wrestling lineage, then finished with the line ‘by the end of NXT, I’m going to take your breath away’.
I’ll believe it when I see it quite frankly.
Husky was next to (try and) speak, getting the topic ‘doorknob’.
He said that he used a doorknob to get into the building, reminded everyone that he too came from a wrestling family, then said that the people in the arena didn’t deserve to hear him speak.
Lucky Cannon got ‘deodorant’ and rambled on about a smelly guy needing deodorant and deodorant needing a smelly guy, then said he was the deodorant and the WWE was the smelly guy.
It was about as bad as Cottonwood’s.
Alex Riley wrapped things up with the topic ‘Pigeon’, which he used to describe his fellow rookies, saying he was the rooster of the henhouse.
Striker went down the line asking for audience reactions.
Surprisingly Kaval, McGillicutty and Lucky Cannon got a few boos, unsurprisingly Cottonwood, Riley and Harris got booed and Percy Watson got roundly cheered, making him the winner.
I think this was the right result, he’s clearly got the most charisma (perhaps level with Alex Riley) but the heel never wins these things.
Match 1
Singles Match
Percy Watson (w/M.V.P)
Vs.
Michael McGillicutty (w/Kofi Kingston)
Rather randomly the Pro’s stood on the apron for this match as if they were tag partners, to do some ‘coaching’, according to Michael Cole.
In fact if M.V.P hadn’t clearly been dressed in ‘street’ clothes, I’d have assumed this was a tag match.
Percy Watson could be absolutely horrific in the ring, and I’d still rate him as my favourite in the competition, but the truth is he isn’t.
He’s as accomplished in there as anyone else I’ve seen in the competition, but I wasn’t surprised that he lost this to McGillicutty.
I’ve not seen anything from MM that has wowed me so far, not in ring or on the microphone, yet they seem to be keen on pushing him and his record is now a rather impressive 4-0.
Following this match there was a vignette showing what the Pro’s thought of Titus O’Neil.
Basically nearly everyone talked crap about him.
Michael McGillicutty wins by Pinfall.
Match 2
Singles Match
The Miz (w/Alex Riley)
Vs.
Kaval (w/LayCool)
Riley and LayCool are up on the apron again, this must be a new thing they are trying.
Surely all it does is limit the guys in the ring though, that’s two corners that really they have to avoid.
Michael Cole struck with some fantastic breaking news again, explaining that after The Miz’s attack on R-Truth on Raw, there’s serious doubt that he’ll be able to participate in the Money in the Bank match.
This bit of hot-off-the-press info comes AFTER it was announced on Raw that he would no longer take part in the match.
Nice one Cole!
Kaval came very close to scoring a victory in this one, but after grabbing a long 2 count The Miz recovered and blocked The Warrior’s Way, before hitting the Skull Crushing Finale to score the three.
I don’t know who she is, but this ring announcer they have on NXT is just plain awful.
She growls everything and it just sounds forced and, well, bad.
After the match a video played with the Pro’s talking about Eli Cottonwood.
They were much more positive about him compared with Titus, but the general consensus was that he needs a lot more work.
The Miz wins by Pinfall.
Main Event Match
Tag Team Match
Lucky Cannon & Mark Henry
Vs.
Husky Harris & ‘Dashing’ Cody Rhodes
Before the match they had another one of those videos, this time about Husky Harris.
This was much more positive than the others, although the most positive things said was that he is ‘deceivingly athletic’ and Michelle McCool rates him, so take it as you will.
Word is The Nexus are going to be on NXT next week, although no one really knows why.
I skipped through most of this as I’m still a bit behind schedule, but the end of the match saw Lucky Cannon fall victim to the Cross-Rhodes after Husky Harris had saved his Pro from a loss moments before.
Husky Harris & Cody Rhodes win by Pinfall.
