Opening Segment
Punk Back on ECW
Smackdown’s Straight Edge former champion kicks off the show tonight from backstage.
He paints himself as a glorious ECW success story that has briefly returned home to his adoring fans, claiming that when he hits the ring it will invoke one of the biggest chants anyone has ever heard.
Judging by the boos merely at his appearance on the titan-tron, I somehow doubt it.
Segment 2
Ryder Challenges Benjamin
Ryder introduces himself but says he’s actually in the ring to introduce them all to ECW’s newest Diva; Rosa Mendes.
He tells Rosa that his life has changed since he started hanging out with her, claiming that he was so lucky to have her in his corner last week.
Rosa then tells a mind-numbingly dull story about boots that were on sale, but weren’t on sale… or something like that.
Zack cuts her short and says he invited her out here to be in his corner, because he’s going to challenge Shelton Benjamin to a re-match.
This prompts yet another story from Rosa about Margarita’s or something, but Shelton’s music cuts her short before she can get into full swing.
Once in the ring Shelton accepts the challenge, but says that he wants to do things a little different this week.
He suggests that this time Ryder sits in the corner, while he gets to grips with Rosa.
Zack takes offence to this and Benjamin calls him a tool.
Shelton suggests they have the match right now, but Ryder declines. He then uses Rosa as a distraction, cheap shotting the Gold Standard before fleeing up the ramp.
Match 1
Mask Vs. Career Match
Paul Burchill (w/Katie Lea)
Vs.
The Hurricane
Wow, this match even got it’s very own hype video!
They must be seriously proud of how this rivalry has built up, I have to admit as far as ECW mid-card rivalries go, it hasn’t been too bad.
I can’t really see a Hurricane loss here, but then I’ve been wrong a lot in the past.
The reason I don’t expect Burchill to win, is that I think it would be the perfect opportunity to move him and Katie Lea onto one of the main brands.
He’s turned in some good performances as of late and I think a promotion would be a worthy one, although his average promo skills may hold him back on the Red or the Blue.
Also, The Hurricane hasn’t been back long at all, and it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to unmask him so quickly after his return, but we’ll see.
A fast paced, back and forth start to this match saw The Hurricane eventually grab the upper hand, scoring a near fall after hitting a Springboard Cannonball to the outside.
Katie Lea got involved moments later, handing Burchill the advantage as he capitalised with a strong Back Supplex before locking on a Sleeper to ground the superhero.
As Burchill slowed things down the commentary team made a big deal of how he had put his career… in ECW on the line, subtly emphasising the ‘in ECW’ part of it each time.
The Hurricane fought back and scored yet another near fall, before calling for the Eye of the Hurricane, but Burchill reversed out and hit a Pele Kick for a near fall of his own, which would be the start of a run of 2 counts for The Ripper.
Getting frustrated at not being able to put The Hurricane away, Burchill tried to end the match from the top rope, only to be reversed and hit with a sick top rope Neckbreaker, costing him the match and his career… on ECW.
Probably the best match I’ve seen from Burchill, watch this space, he’ll be on Raw/Smackdown soon.
After the match the Burchill’s looked distraught, crouching in the ring together wondering what just happened.
Interestingly Burchill had a black armband on with the letters SEB across it.
If anyone knows what this was about please get in touch.
The Hurricane wins by Pinfall.
Segment 3
The Straight Edge Lifestyle
Backstage Tiffany looks a little upset that she’s just lost two more members of her Extreme roster, but doesn’t have time to dwell on it as C.M Punk enters her office.
They talk about him being Straight Edge, then Punk brings up the fact that Tiffany likes to party a bit and have the occasional drink.
Before Punk can cast judgement on her, she admits that she likes to socialise and suggests that Punk give it a go, saying he should try being a human being for once.
Match 2
Singles Match
Vance Archer
Vs.
Johnny Andrews
‘Local Talent’ time again folks.
Not a lot to be found on Johnny Andrews I’m afraid, although this might or might not be him wrestling an amateur fight that ended in controversy.
The commentary team also told us that he moved over from the world of Hockey to try his hand at sports entertainment.
After this match he’s probably wishing he’d stuck to chasing the puck around, as Archer squashed him convincingly, picking up the win with the ridiculously plain reverse DDT.
Vance Archer wins by Pinfall.
Segment 4
Christian and Punk
The ECW Champion is gearing up for the main event backstage when he is approached by Punk.
Christian quizzes him about his Straight Edge lifestyle, asking if he is allowed to hold hands with a girl, and about what happens if he’s late out past his curfew.
Christian says his peeps in Philly wouldn’t call him Straight Edge, they’d call him a nerd.
He continues to call him a nerd until Punk demands respect, reeling off his list of achievements.
Christian says that while Punk might be a former 3 time World Heavyweight Champion, he’s STILL a Champion.
Main Event Match
Tag Team Match
Christian & R-Truth
Vs.
William Regal & C.M Punk
These guys will really have to pull out the stops to better the Hurricane/Burchill meeting from earlier on in the show.
Personally I think they’ll struggle to come up to the same standard.
This match followed the age-old tag formula of the heels isolating one half of the face team for the majority of the match, until the inevitable tag that brings in the fresh man to dominate.
Christian was the fresh man in this case, but twice failed to land the KillSwitch and after things broke down completely, got nailed with a Knee Trembler and a GTS that gifted the win to the villains.
Big momentum for Team Orton going into Survivor Series!
William Regal & C.M Punk by Pinfall.
