    The ECW Digest

    Opening Segment

The Abraham Washington Show with Yoshi Tatsu

Once again tonight’s show emanates from The Hallam FM Arena in Sheffield, England.

Tony Atlas kicks things off by introducing Abe and revealing that tonight’s guest will be Yoshi Tatsu.

Washington emerges to some boo’s, then does very little to endear himself to the English crowd by making a selection of jokes about teeth, prompting a ‘Who are Ya’ chant.

Washington mentions the ECW Championship match main event, drawing a huge cheer at the mention of William Regal’s name, then brings out Yoshi Tatsu.

Tatsu starts by saying that he is nervous and that his English isn’t very good.

Washington and Tatsu say thank you back and forth a few times, as Tatsu has with Christian in the past, then Abe asks his opinion on the title match later tonight.

Tatsu says that while Regal is tough he thinks Christian will win, cue a few boos.

Tatsu and Washington then do a ‘Rush Hour’ bit and make mention of their likeness to Jackie Chan/Chris Tucker, before Tony Atlas brings the segment to a close.

A very good opening segment, I don’t think my explanation really did it justice.

    Match 1

    Singles Match
    Paul Burchill (w/Katie Lea)
    Vs.
    Goldust

I don’t know why, but I’d expected the Mask Vs. Career match to take place on tonight’s show, so this one came as a bit of a surprise to me.

It turns out Burchill will face off against The Hurricane next week.

The commentary team talked about how Paul Burchill didn’t know how he would be received here in Sheffield as he is from Chelsea, then went on to talk about how Sheffield and Chelsea have some sort of huge rivalry.

I’ve lived pretty close to Sheffield my whole life and this is the first I’ve heard of it.

Sure, there’s a North/South divide but other than that there isn’t really any tension between the two places. Had it been Manchester and Chelsea, or Liverpool and Chelsea then perhaps.

Anyway, this was your average ECW midcard match.

The crowd didn’t really warm to Burchill, which I’d like to think is a testament to how strong of a heel he is, as over here we tend to cheer for the home grown talent regardless of heel/face status.

Just as Burchill looked to have the match sewn up The Hurricane’s music hit the speakers and the Green One sprinted down the ramp and circled the ring, causing just enough of a distraction to allow Goldust to hit the Final Cut and pick up the win.

The Hurricane then made his exit as quickly as he entered, leaving Burchill fuming in the ring.

    Goldust wins by Pinfall.

    Segment 2

    Zack and Rosa Part 2

Backstage Zack Ryder tells Rosa that she did a good job ring announcing last week, and although most people think she is to blame for him losing the match last week, he couldn’t take his eyes off her.

He says that he likes her and that any time she wants to come to the ring with him and stand in his corner, she’s welcome to do so.

She says she’ll think about it and walks away, leaving Zack to have yet another pink, hazy daydream about them being together.

    Segment 3

    Regal Clears the Air

William Regal and Tiffany are backstage in the GM’s office.

Regal apologises to Tiffany, saying he knows that she is mad at him for getting an ECW Championship shot without her permission, but assures her that she will benefit in the end as she will have him as her brand’s champion.

Tiffany tells Regal she is glad he feels this way, because she thinks they got off on the wrong foot.

She tells him that she would like them to have a better working relationship, regardless of whether he wins the title or not.

    Match 2

    Singles Match
    Vance Archer
    Vs.
    Jason Blackwell

    It’s ‘local talent’ time!

    Once again I couldn’t find much about this week’s local talent, other than what the commentary team told us;

He’s from Sheffield, that’s about it.

Before the match Archer cut a very short and pretty dull promo about his opponent finding out who he is.

Archer then proceeded to completely squash Blackwell, picking up the win with the Reverse DDT.

    Vance Archer wins by Pinfall.

    Main Event Match

    ECW Championship Match
    Christian
    Vs.
    William Regal

Wow, Regal and Christian are getting literally half the show for this match, I hope it lives up to expectations.

Regal enters first and gets a very positive reaction from the crowd, then Christian gets almost exactly the same response.

We’ve always quite liked Christian over here, even when he turned on Edge and received a huge heel push, he always got a positive reaction when WWE came to the UK.

A ‘lets go Regal/lets go Christian’ chant battle broke out almost as soon as the bell rang and continued on and off practically the entire length of the match.

Christian got the upper hand in the early going and continued to dominate for quite a while, until Regal landed a couple of very effective modified supplexes; one from the top rope and one on the outside.

The long spell of domination for Christian seemed to turn the majority of the crowd against him, and by this point every shot from Regal received a finisher-like ovation, while everything Christian did drew loud booing.

Regal very nearly picked up the three count after reversing a Sunset Flip, but the referee caught him holding onto the ropes and the match continued.

Completely against the run of the match Christian escaped from a submission and hit the KillSwitch. However, Christian didn’t have enough left to make a quick cover and by the time he was able to Regal had recovered enough to kick out after 2.

After taking a tumble to the outside Christian once again began to battle back, but Regal landed a Knee Trembler and looked to have things tied up, but somehow Christian kicked out at 2 and 9/1oths.

Christian again went for the KillSwitch but Regal countered and locked in the Regal Stretch, very nearly getting the victory by submission.

Yet more back and forth action as this match reached it’s conclusion.

KillSwitch countered, Knee Trembler countered, KillSwitch hits, Christian retains the title.

I can’t say as I’m happy about the result, but the match was one of the best I’ve seen on ECW in a while.

The crowd showed their appreciation to both athletes after the bell, cheering for Christian as the show went off the air.

Christian retains the ECW Championship by Pinfall.
