    The ECW Digest – 8th September 2009

    ECW Digest Temp Banner08/09/2009

Hello and welcome the all new ECW Digest.

We’re sticking with the new look for now as we’ve had some pretty positive feedback.

We’d still love to know what you think about the changes so please feel free to get in touch via the Contact Us page, or any of the usual email addresses.

(By the way, the banners are purely temporary. We kind of rushed this idea through at the last minute and didn’t have time to get anything a bit better made.)

    On with the show!

    The ECW Digest

    Opening Match

    Singles Match
    The Hurricane
    Vs.
    Paul Burchill (w/Katie Lea)

Anyone been eagerly anticipating this match since Hurricane made the challenge last week on the E.J Show?

    Nah, I didn’t think so.

Hurricane kicked off the match and the show in a fast-paced style befitting his super hero character, but also seemed to burn himself out quickly allowing Burchill to control the majority of the match with his slower, more methodical offence.

Hurricane looked like getting back into the match just before the first commercial break when he low-bridged his opponent then soared over the top rope to hit him with a Cross-Body. However, when the action returned it was Burchill back in control after hitting a very impressive Overhead Kick.

Hurricane used his speed to regain the advantage, then scored a near fall with a top-rope Cross Body but ended up crashing and burning in dramatic style after being reversed on the top rope and falling victim to a second rope Powerslam, something he barely kicked out of when the cover was applied.

Hurricane was able to pick up the victory after a classic case of botched interference; Katie Lea attempted the distraction, only to be knocked off the apron by her own brother who was then hit with the Eye of the Hurricane for the 1..2..3.

Good opening match and although I wasn’t looking forward to it, I’ll be looking forward to the next one a little more.

    The Hurricane wins by Pinfall.

    Segment 1

    Christian & Dreamer Interviewed

Brand new interviewer Savannah asked one half of tonight’s main event what they thought about it.

Dreamer rambled something about not letting Regal’s posse take over ECW then Christian picked things up by making a few jokes and saying they were fighting not only for themselves, but for everything ECW was and has been.

    Match 2

    Tag Team Match
    Shelton Benjamin & Sheamus
    Vs.
    Yoshi Tatsu & Goldust

I wish they’d make their mind up with Shelton Benjamin. He’s good as a heel and he’s not too bad at being a face, but at the minute he’s flip-flopping between the two and it just feels like they are using him to fill any gap they can find.

This is a little insulting to him given his level of talent and doesn’t do his opponents any favours either as it’s hard to boo/cheer the person he’s against when the week before he was playing the opposite role.

That aside this was a good match for all 4 guys.

The conclusion of the bout was slightly bizarre to say the least. Goldust knocked Shelton off the apron, then Sheamus drilled him with the Pump Kick while Benjamin simultaneously tagged himself in then covered for the pinfall.

After the bell Sheamus and Benjamin squared up before the Celtic Warrior dropped his partner with a right hand, leading to a massive brawl between the pair. I might be getting my wish sooner than I thought.

Shelton Benjamin & Sheamus win by Pinfall.

    Match 3

    Singles Match
    Zack Ryder
    Vs.
    Rory Fargo

Just when I thought we were going to see a ‘local talent’-less ECW they throw this match into the mix.

Rory Fargo may be better known to the hardcore wrestling fans as ‘Rory Fox’.

He has appeared on WWE television before, jobbing to Umaga way back in 2006.

I couldn’t find out much more about Rory, but the length of the match didn’t give me long to do so.

If you want to know more about Rory, or congratulate him on his ECW appearance you can find his Myspace Here.

Ryder picked up a completely unchallenged win with the Zack Attack.

    Anyone who noticed a few laughs from the crowd towards the end of the match, the reason for this is rather comical;

As Ryder used his opponent’s rather tight ring attire to throw him into the turnbuckle, he pulled on them just a little too hard and for a few seconds Mr. Fargo revealed ‘all’ to the attending audience.

Obviously this wasn’t seen on the broadcast version of the show, although as the camera focused on Ryder you could clearly see Fargo ‘adjusting’ himself on the titan-tron behind.

    Zack Ryder wins by Pinfall.

    Segment 2

    Regal Speaks to Tiffany

Backstage Tiffany is chatting with Tyler Reks when William Regal enters flanked by his two heavies.

Regal patronisingly asks Reks if he is O.K following their match last week, calling him ‘treacle’ in the process.

Reks leaves and Regal asks Tiffany how she can stand by while Christian and Dreamer attacked his companions with weapons last week.

Tiffany says she might have been slightly harder on them had they not been attacked in the previous weeks.

Regal vows to win the title on Sunday and leaves.

    Main Event Match

    Tag Team Match
    Christian & Tommy Dreamer
    Vs.
Vladimir Kozlov & Ezekiel Jackson (w/William Regal)

This match was given an incredibly large portion of the show to run, despite looking like quite a dull prospect.

Dreamer and Christian started strongly, seemingly demonstrating that Regal’s pair of brutes are manageable if isolated.

Kozlov and Jackson soon focused on the weak link of the opposing team and began picking apart Tommy Dreamer with submissions, stiff double team shots and quick tags while Christian helplessly looked on.

Christian finally got the tag but unlike most ‘hot tags’ had a hard time knocking Kozlov from his feet, finally achieving it with a top rope Dropkick.

Kozlov seemed mostly un-phased by it all however and knocked Christian down with a headbutt, tagging in Jackson who continued the assault.

After what seemed like an age of Jackson and Kozlov monotonously isolating and beating Christian, Dreamer got the tag and immediately began effectively breaking down Jackson, topping it all with a Frog Splash that grabbed a 2 count.

Kozlov broke up the pinfall, then during the ensuing chaos Regal distracted Dreamer just long enough to prevent the Dreamer DDT and allow Jackson to hit his finisher for the victory.

After the bell Regal locked Dreamer in a Regal Stretch, then viciously kicked Christian in the head with his street shoes, leaving both men down and out.

Vladimir Kozlov & Ezekiel Jackson win by Pinfall.
