WWE Hall of Fame 2009: Koko B. Ware

WWE Hall of Fame 2009 Koko B. Ware

    On with the show…

    Personal Views

This was probably the hardest of all the Hall of Fame articles to write, mainly because as ridiculously popular as Koko was, he never really did much worth mentioning in the WWE, and even in other promotions he never really sustained a high-level position. In fact it is exactly because of this that many fans are disputing whether he is worthy of a place in the Hall of Fame.

There seems to be two trains of thought on the matter:

-Koko never won any WWE titles and remained a mid-carder and glorified jobber for the majority of his WWE career. He wasn’t an amazing wrestler and doesn’t deserve to be in the Hall of Fame.

-Koko was incredibly popular. Wrestling, at the end of the day, is a popularity contest and seeing as he won over droves of people he does deserve to be in the Hall of Fame.

My thoughts lie somewhere between the two.

I realise that every Hall of Fame inductee can’t be someone the magnitude of Hulk Hogan, but Koko really never did anything worthy of Hall of Fame status in terms of his wrestling ability, titles won etc. Some of the other Hall of Fame inductee’s this year also never made much of an impact in the WWE, but they did make much more of an impact on the business of wrestling which I don’t feel Koko did.

On the flipside of this, as soon as he was announced I knew who he was. Despite only seeing him (and I worked this out based on old Pay Per Views I’d watched) a total of 8 times in the ring, I knew exactly who he was, what he was well known for and that his makaw was called Frankie. I then came to the conclusion that if I, as someone who didn’t watch WWE at all when he was around, had retained that amount of information, Ware must have been incredibly memorable for anyone watching at the time.

After reading another article about how Koko had allegedly been chosen by the WWE creative team primarily to create synergy between the WWE television product and the newly released WWE Legends of WrestleMania video game, it made me consider his worthyness even more. If the WWE are only putting him in because it might help sell a few more copies of the game, I think that does a dis-service not only to Koko, but to the Hall of Fame itself.

Now I’m not sure how true it all is so I wouldn’t like to judge either way, but the bottom line is that Koko B. Ware IS going to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame whether the fans like it or not.

From what I could find out, he’s never been involved in any sort of scandal or alleged drugs misuse, put numerous wrestlers over and has entertained millions of people with a career that has spanned over 28 years and is still going.

In my opinion that alone should be enough to justify his induction, so congratulations to The Birdman from all at WWEBlog.co.uk.
