    On with the show…

    Personal Views

Cowboy Bill Watts was a perfect example of the kind of Hall of Fame inductee I was dreading, and it has literally taken me weeks to bring myself to writing this article. Not because I don’t like him, or because I don’t think he is worthy of the title, but simply because I’d honestly never heard of him.

Not getting into wrestling until the 90’s meant that there were an awful lot of superstars that were ‘before my time’, but I’d heard of (Steamboat and The Funks falling squarely into this category). But the challenge here was that I’d literally never heard of Bill Watts, which made my job of writing his hall of fame article difficult, and giving my personal opinions on him practically impossible.

However, through researching the man, the more I learned the more admiration I had for him. After not having the best upbringing he made the most of his talents and became a big name on the wrestling scene, before later building a very successful promotion from the ground up. In fact had it not been for a laundry list of aspects unknowingly and unwittingly conspiring against it, UWF could easily have taken the place of WCW (after all UWF was bought out by JCP which was the forerunner of WCW).

In hindsight I’m slightly ashamed to say that I didn’t look forward to writing this article, as it has taught me a lot about the history of the current promotions, as well as how easy it is for a very influential wrestler and promoter to slip under the radar of current wrestling fans.
