    The Slammy Awards 2009

    Slammy Awards

JayD and The Informant take a look at this years Nominees and Slammy Award Winners

So it’s been a week now since the Slammy Awards and as promised I’m bringing you my views on the winners and the unfortunate runners up.

As it’s the festive season I decided that I’d bring on board the WWEBlog’s resident Grinch; The Informant, to help me out on this one too.

His comments will be in a rather chrismassy dark green.

If you want to read the full results as they happened live Click Here.

Or if you’d rather find out who won/lost without all our opinion thrown in Click Here for a ‘to the point’ article on Suite 101.

So without further ado, let’s dive in!

WWE Slammy Award for Best Tag Team of 2009

    Winner: Jeri-Show

Runners Up: DX, Legacy & The Hart Dynasty

Although not the most popular choice, I think this one was the right decision.

Athleticism and strength, aerial and powerful, cunning yet forceful. They proved by holding on to the combined tag straps as long as they did that they mean business. Although to be honest as long as Cryme Tyme didn’t win I don’t mind too much.

I agree with this one as well, Jeri-Show were kind of thrown together randomly but gelled instantly and up until TLC were absolutely unstoppable. If they hadn’t won I’d have liked to have seen it gone to The Hart Dynasty, as I think it would have pushed them on.

    Maybe next year.

WWE Slammy Award for Breakout Superstar of 2009

    Winner: Sheamus

Runners Up: Yoshi Tatsu, Drew McIntyre & Abraham Washington

I’ll start by asking the same question I asked during the live show. Why is Abraham Washington even a nomination?

He isn’t a ‘Superstar’ any more than Michael Cole, Josh Mathews or Justin Roberts are, so to put him in this category was a joke and a slap in the face to other Superstars who have débuted  in 2009 (such as Tyler Reks, as much as I don’t really care about him.)

I like Sheamus and seeing him take the belt was a sight to behold, but I think McIntyre probably impressed more in the long run.

I have to plump for Drew McIntyre here, although I was sure Pale-mus would win due to his recent WWE title capture.

When you get personally recommended by the boss (and more importantly Me; The WWEBlog Informant), you know you are onto a winner.

Winning gold so early on in his career, and boasting a vast array of mat and technical skills, McIntyre in my opinion goes in to 2010 with a whole heap of potential.

WWE Slammy Award for Shocker of The Year 2009

Winner: C.M Punk Retires Jeff Hardy

Runners Up: Randy Orton attacking Stephanie McMahon, Sheamus attacking Mark Cuban and Batista turning on Rey Mysterio.

Right, I am sure there have been other shocking moments worthy of mention.

BUT, when you manhandle and maul the boss’s daughter whilst her beau is tied up in the ropes mere yards away, assault him with a sledgehammer and then top it all off by delivering the sloppiest, wettest kiss possible to her unconscious body, that takes a lot of shocking to beat.

    I agree completely.

Even Batista turning on Rey was more of a shock than Jeff being retired, everyone knew it was coming and this is a blatant example of the writers using the award to push an angle rather than acknowledge an event.

I’d have given Sheamus the nod, but for claiming the WWE Championship rather than attacking a distinctly average Guest Host.

WWE Slammy Award for Match of The Year 2009

Winner: Shawn Michaels Vs. The Undertaker – WrestleMania XXV

Runners Up: Randy Orton Vs. John Cena at Breaking Point, Team Raw Vs. Team Smackdown at Bragging Rights and Jeff Hardy Vs. Edge at Extreme Rules.

This is a one horse race.

Shawn-Taker, men with nearly 40 years wrestling experience combined, had no need to prove anything going into this bout.

Yet both joined forces to put on a truly masterful display, whilst making the whole process seem effortless.

In what was otherwise a very disappointing Wrestlemania XXV, this match stole the show.

That’s why I hired this guy. He’s said it all really.

It was a superb match and while Morrison has put on some great bouts this year against the likes of Dolph Ziggler, Rey Mysterio and The Miz, nothing has even come close to the epic battle at WMXXV.

WWE Slammy Award for Guest Host of The Year 2009

    Winner: Bob Barker

Runners Up: The Osbournes, Seth Green and Shaquille O’Neal.

They’ve all been very average, but Bob Barker was probably the funniest and I’d have to give him the nod.

If it’d been Ozzy Osbourne on his own I’d have probably gone for him.

This is a very biased view, but I love Happy Gilmore and also love Family Guy, so for me its between Barker and Green.

Seeing as Family Guy is a series rather than a one off, and sometimes makes me laugh so much I come close to soaking my under-shorts, Green wins!

WWE Slammy Award for Extreme Moment of 2009

Winner: Jeff Hardy’s Suicide Dive at SummerSlam

Runners Up: Kofi Kingston’s Big Boom Drop, Show’s Spotlight Chokeslam & Triple H ‘s Home Invasion

Kofi Kingston could have used this to really kick on, and although for a spell a feud with Randy Orton was on the cards, I fear by the time 2010 arrives he will find himself back to where he started.

Therefore, the winner should really be Big Show, as his actions took his character to a new level and pushed him right back into the main event picture.

I think the worst one won here.

Jeff Hardy’s jumped off hundreds of ladders and I seem to remember much more spectacular events in his storied career than the one at SummerSlam.

Kofi’s Boom Drop was immense and Show’s Spotlight Chokeslam looked brutal (plus it was on Cena, so win-win) but Triple H’s Home Invasion was by far my favourite.

It reminded me of the good old Attitude Era and obviously the Stone Cold/Brian Pillman promo, which was one of the first I saw when I truly got into wrestling in a big way.

WWE Slammy Award for Diva of the Year 2009

    Winner: Maria

    Runners Up: Everyone else.

I don’t care in the slightest.

I think Natalya, Beth Phoenix or Maryse deserved it most in terms of pure wrestling ability.

    Maria, because I love her.

WWE Slammy Award for Oh My Moment of 2009

    Winner: ‘Vintage’ Michael Cole

Runners Up: Santino’s Thanksgiving, HBK The Chef & Chris Masters Pec Dance

All of these were sooooooooo entertaining that being forced to pick one is a ridiculously hard task.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a pec dance as good as Chris Masters so I’d have to give it to him.

    Not that I see many…

Just in case you missed it, I think there might have been a hint of sarcasm in The Informant’s answer there.

I’d go for Master’s Pec Dance too purely because of how funny it was, it didn’t particularly make me gasp with amazement or anything.

WWE Slammy Award for Superstar of the Year 2009

    Winner: John Cena

Runners Up: The Undertaker, Randy Orton & C.M Punk

I didn’t like how this one was decided this year, specifically the way C.M Punk had to job to Cena in a ridiculously short and completely embarrassing match.

Cena didn’t need this award in the slightest.

Jericho proved last year how influential picking up this Slammy can be, using it to his credit at every opportunity to build himself up into one of the premier heels in the WWE at the minute.

This is something that C.M Punk could have done equally as well, interoperating his Straight Edge gimmick as well, and that’s why I think he would have benefited from this award the most.

It’s not like he doesn’t deserve it either; other than having an awful finisher, he’s one of the most talented guys both in and out of the ring that Smackdown has at the minute.

He won match of the year, he won Heavyweight gold, and he has served for over ten years more than any of the other contenders. The Undertaker.
