    Fatal 4 Way 2010 : GRuz’s Views

The first-ever Fatal 4-Way Pay-Per-View will be held on Sunday, June 20, at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York, USA.

As of press-time, only five matches have been confirmed for Fatal 4-Way, a strangely low number for a PPV event.

Who will come out on top this weekend?

    United States Championship Match

    Singles Match
    The Miz (c)
    Vs.
    R-Truth

In a somewhat-bizarre and fairly-rare move, The Miz snatched the title away from champion R-Truth in a four-way match last Monday on Raw, just days before Fatal 4-Way.

The match also included Zack Ryder and John Morrison, the new contender for ‘most criminally underused WWE superstar’.

Naturally R-Truth immediately used his rematch clause for Fatal 4-Way.

So… a four-way match a week before the Fatal 4-Way PPV, but a one-on-one contest during the actual PPV? Yeah, I don’t get it either, but anyway…

The Miz originally won the US Championship belt by beating R-Truth, after Bret Hart abdicated the belt following his victory over The Miz in May.

So, as they say, this is the rubber match between The Miz and R-Truth, each man earning one victory over the other in recent weeks.

Granted, the US Championship is a mid-card draw, but even mid-carders deserve storylines, so it would stand to reason that the writers will give the win to whoever they wish to give a push to leading into next month’s Money in the Bank PPV. And who will that be?

    Predicted Outcome

Look for The Miz to retain.

Frankly, I’m hard-pressed to understand the reasoning behind putting R-Truth up to ‘mid-card contender’ status, let alone US Champion.

Yes, he’s athletic, but his finishing maneuver is painful to watch and for a young, energetic man, he’s terrible at mic work.

The Miz is more experienced, more polished, and more interesting. Plus, he gets far more out of a crowd than R-Truth ever has. Finally, the heel generally gets underhanded wins in mid-level rivalries like this.

The Miz will win. Because he’s The Miz. And he’s awesome.

    Divas Championship Match

    Fatal 4 Way Match
    Eve (c)
    Vs.
    Maryse
    Vs.
    Alicia Fox
    Vs.
    Gail Kim

It’s hard to write about divas matches without sounding disdainful.

Not because I’m sexist, really, I’m not.

It’s because the writers obviously spend so little time on diva storylines that they inevitably degenerate into little more than screechy catfights. Yeah, most of the men’s storylines aren’t much better but at least they manage to go a bit farther than “you’re fat and I don’t like you, so I’m going to beat you up” or something very much like it.

Eve is the current champion and has been harassed for the past several weeks by Maryse.

As is often the case, Maryse has been getting the drop on Eve as of late, including pummeling her mercilessly backstage and beating her in the recent Viewer Choice Diva Battle Royale.

As this is Fatal 4-Way, the writers have thrown an interesting wrench in the works by including Eve’s pal Gail Kim and Maryse’s partner Alicia Fox to round out the foursome.

Obviously this leads to ample opportunity for betrayal between friends, as I’m sure Kim and Fox are totally uninterested in making it a strictly Eve/Maryse contest.

    Predicted Outcome

Maryse wins and becomes new Divas Champion.

Normally, the popular scenario sees the babyface getting destroyed leading up to a PPV, before finally and heroically vanquishing her opponent when it counts the most.

For whatever reason, I’m not seeing that panning out here. Kim is a former champion and Fox can wrestle well enough, but I have a feeling that the friendship between Eve and Kim might be a weakness that Maryse will exploit and gain a sudden victory through underhanded means.

    Intercontinental Championship Match

    Singles Match
    Kofi Kingston (c)
    Vs.
    Drew McIntyre

This match is a bit odd in that even though McIntyre has been in a fairly-long ongoing feud with the Champion Kingston, his most prominent enemy as of late has been a non-wrestler – Smackdown General Manager Teddy Long.

Last week’s Smackdown was a culmination of sorts to this rivalry. Under the threat of having Mr. McMahon fire Long, McIntyre forced Teddy into a “match”, in which he verbally and physically harassed the poor GM before forcing him to call McIntyre the “Chosen One” and lay down for a 3-count.

Despite Matt Hardy and Kofi Kingston finally intervening, McIntyre’s security deal held them off while McIntyre beat them down in turn.

McIntyre winning the IC title would make life even more miserable for the harried GM, as the new champion would undoubtedly do all he could to put more of Smackdown under his control.

At this point, Long is more of a puppet GM than anything else, his every decision vetoed by McIntyre whenever it suits him.

Will Fatal 4-Way signal the end of the Teddy Long era and usher in the “Chosen One” to a place of increased power?

    Predicted Outcome

Kofi Kingston wins and retains the Intercontinental Championship.

Methinks that Teddy Long has finally had enough of McIntyre pushing him around and, “Chosen One” or not, will be looking to get his revenge.

The last thing he needs is for Drew to become champion and become even more insufferable.

Look for Long to get involved, either directly or through third party interference, to screw Drew and keep the belt around the waist of the ‘Ghanian Sensation’.

    World Heavyweight Championship Match

    Fatal 4 Way Match
    Jack Swagger (c)
    Vs.
    The Big Show
    Vs.
    C.M Punk
    Vs.
    Rey Mysterio

This four-way match features two distinct rivalries that have developed in recent weeks – The Big Show verbally and physically harassing champion Jack Swagger, and CM Punk’s efforts to bring Rey Mysterio into the Straight Edge Society.

Swagger has been World Champion since March 30, when he cashed in his Money in the Bank contract that he had won at Wrestlemania 26, beating Chris Jericho on Smackdown for the title.

Since then, he has beaten such Superstar contenders as Jericho, Edge, and Randy Orton to remain Champion. In late April, Swagger and The Big Show began an angle where Show turned face after clocking him with a knockout punch, tired of listening to Swagger brag about his accomplishments.

CM Punk and Rey Mysterio have also been embroiled in a long-running feud, with Punk trying to turn Mysterio “straight edge” and force him to join his clique, while Mysterio has resisted all of Punk’s efforts and even managed to shave his head at Over the Limit, leading to Punk donning a mask ever since.

A much-covered side plot of the match involves the Undertaker, who was originally slated to participate but was jumped by an unknown assailant and injured too badly to compete for the title.

Kane has, at one time or another, accused all four championship contenders as being the one who crippled the Undertaker, and has vowed to get to the bottom of the attack.

Interestingly, CM Punk beat none other than Kane to qualify for the match.

Even more interestingly, it was Rey Mysterio who has benefitted the most by Taker’s absence, winning a special qualification battle royal to take the Deadman’s place in the Fatal 4-Way championship match.

The build-up to this match has been pretty solid and it could go in any number of directions.

So who leaves Fatal 4-Way as the World Champion?

    Predicted Outcome

By process of elimination, The Big Show wins the World Heavyweight Championship.

Swagger has held the title for 2 ½ months, a near eternity by WWE standards.

The time is ripe for him to lose the title. So who will he lose to?

I’m a big fan of Punk and would love for him to win, but his rivalry with Mysterio shows no signs of slowing anytime soon. The only way that either Punk or Mysterio wins is if one of them had something to do with injuring the Undertaker.

If Mysterio was behind it, that would require turning him heel, something that is extremely unlikely.

If Punk was behind it, nobody will be surprised, but even Punk’s future is somewhat in doubt. After the NXT rookies attacked Cena and Punk at the June 7 Raw, there have been rumblings that may have started an eventual face turn for the Straight Edge Superstar.

There is also the distinct possibility that it was Kane himself that attacked the Undertaker, setting up another brother vs. brother rivalry down the road.

Look for Kane to “discover” the culprit at Fatal 4-Way and become involved in the match in some way. In what will most likely be a chaotic conclusion, look for The Big Show to clock somebody with a Knockout Punch and come out the victor.

    WWE Championship Match

    Fatal 4 Way Match
    John Cena (c)
    Vs.
    Sheamus
    Vs.
    Edge
    Vs.
    Randy Orton

For the umpteenth time, John Cena is the WWE Champion.

And for the umpteenth time, the WWE announcing team has spent the past couple weeks constantly harping about how Cena is facing “impossible odds” at the next PPV.

In this case, Cena is facing three opponents instead of one: the “Rated R Superstar” Edge, Celtic Warrior Sheamus, and newly-turned-fan-favorite Randy Orton.

The Viper has been a face since defeating former Legacy teammates Ted Dibiase and Cody Rhodes at Wrestlemania 26. More recently, he faced Jack Swagger at Extreme Rules in an unsuccessful attempt at winning the World Heavyweight Championship.

Sheamus is coming off a rivalry with Triple H, who he demolished in a Street Fight at Extreme Rules. Meanwhile, Edge qualified by defeating Chris Jericho and John Cena in a Triple Threat match during May 24th’s airing of Raw.

This match is set up in much the same way as the World Championship bout: two sets of two guys who can’t stand each other.

In this case, Cena and Sheamus have a long-established rivalry and Edge and Orton have an even longer one; former Tag Team Champions in the Rated-RKO days.

Those good memories are long gone, however, and Edge and Orton now virulently hate each other. So does Cena truly have an impossible task ahead of him to retain the title, or will the Master of Thugonomics come out on top once again?

    Predicted Outcome

Edge wins and becomes the new WWE Champion.

Usually, listening to WWE announcers harp on how a certain result is “impossible” just means that result will inevitably happen and “shock” the WWE world.

That would seemingly set up a Cena victory. I actually don’t see that happening here.

Sheamus, sadly, is just there for window dressing. I think he’s a great heel and a real threat on Raw but would be very surprised if he came away from Fatal 4-Way as the champion.

Randy Orton has had nagging injuries lately, including a separated shoulder in a match against Edge at Over the Limit, so handing him the title now would make little sense, as odds are that he may need recuperation time after the match.

That leaves Edge, who is still technically in a “triumphant return” phase after being out of action for over 6 months in late 2009 and early 2010. It is often the case that when a high-profile superstar is sidelined by injury for a long period of time, he is ushered quickly up the ladder to champion status.

Edge was given such an opportunity by earning a shot at the title against Chris Jericho at Wrestlemania 26, but (in a bit of an upset) lost the match.

This is Edge’s first title shot since Wrestlemania and my guess is that he’ll take advantage of it and become WWE Champion.
