TLC 2009 Live Results!
Hey guys and welcome to WWEBlog’s Live coverage of Tables Ladders and Chairs 2009!
We’re diving straight in with the ECW Championship Ladder match, which could easily end up being the fight of the night!
Match 1
ECW Championship Ladder Match
Christian (c)
Vs.
Shelton Benjamin
We’ve got the three man announce team again tonight; Striker, Cole & King.
There are ladders of varying sizes littering the ringside area as both guys make their way to the ring.
Both men have started this one going all out, the latest high spot seeing Christian plancha over the top rope and land on Shelton who was in the process of dragging a ladder to the ring.
We’ve got the first attempt at taking the title here already!
Christian climbs, gets fingertips on the title but then quickly gets removed from the ladder by Shelton.
Shelton’s up the ladder now! The Gold Standard reversed a Monkey Flip, landing on his feet and springing up the ladder after the gold (or platinum in this case), he didn’t get it though.
We have blood! 11 minutes into the show and Christian is busted wide open after taking a ladder to the face.
A medic is currently trying to patch the wound up to keep things PG-13, but he’s pouring with blood and the crowd are literally baying for it.
On we go now as Shelton flies from the top of the ladder and hits a Senton on the outside. It seemed to do just as much damage to both men, due to an awkward landing.
We might have a unique spot coming up here. Shelton has just taken the cover off the announce table and positioned a ladder from the apron to the table.
After a couple of teased moves both men have moved away from it and re-entered the ring. It’s still there though, despite King saying he should move it, he’s made no effort to.
Shelton takes a ladder to the face allowing Christian to make a dash for the title. Once again he gets fingertips to it, but Benjamin doesn’t give him enough time to unhook it and the match continues.
There have been a few botched spots in this one so far, but I think it’s to be expected and they’ve covered them up fairly well. I’m still waiting for the one or two moments that will make this one stand out from the crowd.
Shelton’s going for the gold!
Christian’s on the same side of the ladder now… Reverse DDT from about half way up!
Cue the Wile E. Coyote cam!
This is getting pretty crazy now! After riding a ladder from the corner almost to the title, Shelton rides a ladder almost to the canvas before jumping off and delivering a clothesline.
Shelton’s after the gold again and Christian is nowhere in sight!
The current champ makes the save just in the nick of time, but pays for it, tasting a Powerslam from near the top of the medium sized ladder.
Moments ago Shelton grabbed the title but Christian removed the ladder, leaving him dangling. Then in a role reversal Christian ended up being the one hanging from the strap (he actually had too much time at the top of the ladder and clearly wasted time not unhooking the belt when he could have), eventually dropping onto Shelton’s shoulders and taking a Powerbomb onto a ladder.
There are spots coming left and right here.
Shelton flips over the top of the ladder, goes for a Sunset Flip which Christian then reverses into a Huricanrana, brilliant stuff.
Shelton goes for a German Supplex onto the ladder that’s between the ring and the announce table, but Christian hits the Fulcrum Prison Blues, leaving Shelton prone on the steel.
Flying Cross Body from the top rope, through the ladder! Brutal stuff and that has to be it!
Christian climbs the ladder, Shelton isn’t even moving…
He unhooks the gold and retains his title!
Brilliant opener!
Christian’s eye looks really messed up, I hope it doesn’t have any lasting effects.
Christian retains the ECW Championship.
Match 2
Intercontinental Championship Match
John Morrison (c)
Vs.
Drew McIntyre
This’ll be as good an opportunity as any to point out the set for tonight’s PPV.
For the past couple of events the staging has been kind of big, kind of bold, but ultimately bland.
Tonight’s meets the first two but is anything but bland. Hundreds of Tables, Ladders and Chairs appear to be suspended above the ramp at either side of the Titantron, and it looks petty damn good.
McIntyre has started this one well after taking advantage on the outside. He’s demonstrating a Regal-like stiffness in his shots tonight and has just hit a Clothesline that JBL would have been proud of.
McIntyre certainly seems to have Morrison’s number in the early going here.
A selection of submissions has thus far kept the IC champion grounded and the heavy handed shots have earned Mr. McMahon’s hand picked prodigy a number of near falls already.
Morrison finally turns the tables with a huge Spinning DDT, countering what I assume was an attempted Tilt-a-Whirl.
Morrison scores what I believe is his first near fall of the night, then follows up with a huge Dropkick from the top rope which scores another 2 count.
McIntyre goes to the knee then hits what Matt Striker describes as an ‘Inverted Alabama Jam’. If anyone remembers Hardcore Holly’s Alabama Slam, it was like that only with Morrison hitting the canvas face first instead of back first.
Flying Chuck! But it’s on the outside!
Morrison drags McIntyre back into the ring by 6, but he recovers and goes for a Spear…misses! McIntyre flies into the ringpost and falls backwards into the perfect position for…
Starship Pain! 1..2.. no, the referee spots McIntyre’s foot under the bottom rope.
Thumb to the eye from McIntyre behind the referee’s back!
Double Underhook DDT! (Or Scotch Drop as it’s going by now)
1..2..3! We have a NEW Champion Ladies and Gents!
This one really surprised me, it was all go from start to finish and it looks like The Informant was 100% right when he said this young Scot was destined for title gold.
The Chosen One has made a big impact here tonight.
Drew McIntyre wins by Pinfall and becomes the NEW Intercontinental Champion.
Segment 1
The Prodigy Delivers
Backstage McIntyre bumps into Mr. McMahon.
Josh Mathews enters and asks Mr. McMahon for a quick word, but he tells him to speak to The Chosen One instead.
Josh asks him if he is surprised he’s claimed gold so quickly and unsurprisingly he says that he isn’t.
Sheamus then enters and concedes that Drew’s match was impressive, but tells him he won’t be the only newcomer to leave the show with title gold.
Match 3
Divas Championship Match
Michelle McCool (c) (w/ Layla)
Vs.
Mickie James
Just when I thought I wouldn’t get chance to grab a toasted bagel tonight the WWE throws in this break match for us.
Thanks guys!
Joking aside these guys are pretty talented and while I’d rather have seen Natalya or Beth Phoenix involved, I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt.
They’re still running with the Piggie James thing and even played the quite frankly embarrassing promo that started it all off before the match.
Someone on the writing team must be pretty damn proud of this god-awful angle, because they’re pushing it none-stop despite no one really giving a crap.
The fights spilled to the outside and Michelle has dealt some serious damage by throwing Mickie into the guard rail.
However, as she goes to deliver the knee that would undoubtedly have ended the match, Mickie moved and began building some offence.
Layla just half got involved, but evidently not enough to raise the ire of the referee, who just told her to move away.
Miscommunication! Layla pulls Mickie from the top rope behind the referee’s back, then inadvertently takes a boot to the face from her friend Michelle.
Mickie rolls up Michelle! 1..2.. kick out!
Big Boot to Mickie this time and that has to be it.
1..2..3. Michelle retains her Divas Championship and it looks like we might have to endure yet more Piggie James segments. Sigh.
Michelle McCool retains the Divas Championship by Pinfall.
Match 4
WWE Championship Tables Match
John Cena (c)
Vs.
Sheamus
I don’t rate Sheamus’ chances too highly here with this match being so early on the card, unless Cena does intend to cash in his rematch at a later point in the show.
The King has a copy of an Irish newspaper in which Sheamus said he was gunning for the gold to restore respect for his home country of Ireland.
It’s for this reason, and the fact that I’m really bored of Cena, that I’m pulling for him to take the gold here, even thought it seems highly unlikely.
Cena gets arguably more boo’s than Sheamus as he enters the ring, I think we’re going to have some anti-Cena chants during this one.
Interesting fact from Mr. Cole as this one kicks off; The last World Champion to be born outside the U.S? Yokozuna.
Cena’s quick out of the blocks but Sheamus turns it around on him within seconds and begins beating the crap out of him with mounted punches.
King is firmly behind Cena for this one after the attack he suffered at Sheamus’ hands, but Matt Striker is playing the heel commentator, sticking up for the Celtic Warrior and doing a pretty good job of it.
I don’t know if it’s due to how generally pasty he is, but Sheamus seems to have a huge red welt under his right arm already.
Sheamus goes for a table early but Cena stops him and slams him into the announce table.
Cena whips Sheamus into the steel steps and digs out the first table of the night, which he sets up at ringside before dragging his rival’s lifeless body onto it.
Cena goes for the Top Rope Legdrop but Sheamus rolls off the table before he can jump.
All three commentators have a heated debate about what the outcome would have been if Cena had jumped and put himself through the table. The final verdict was that the match would continue as you have to physically put your opponent through the wood.
Cena is on the apron now and teetering towards the table, but he battles back and returns to the ring, where he goes for the Attitude Adjustment and comes up short.
Things have slowed down to a crawl here at the minute, so I’ll take this opportunity to thank everyone who’s following TLC with us live and encourage you all to get in touch either via the Contact Us page or by emailing JayD@wweblog.co.uk. We love hearing from you all.
Back to the match! The set up table continues to be a menacing presence for both men, and Sheamus is the next to come close, almost hitting a Powerbomb but allowing Cena to roll off the back just at the crucial moment.
Cena mounts some offence and slams Sheamus on the ramp before putting down the table he erected earlier and attempting to slam it down onto his rival, to no avail.
Finally the match returns to the ring and Cena grabs a fresh table. He decides once again to set it up on the outside of the ring, but takes an absolute age to do so…
Pump Kick! Cena’s down and could be out, but Sheamus looks groggy too.
Sheamus grabs a table from the outside and props it up in the corner. He picks Cena up and goes for the running slam which he used to drive both Santino and Mark Cuban through the wood in recent weeks, but Cena battles back and hits the 5 Knuckle Shuffle, which divides the crowd.
Sheamus smartly dumps the table to the outside as he staggers to his feet, then gets hit with an Attitude Adjustment, but it doesn’t matter!
For the second time tonight Cena de-constructs a table he earlier put up, then drags it into the ring and sets it up there instead.
Boo’s ring around the arena as he begins to set Sheamus up on the top rope.
He’s going for a 2nd rope Attitude Adjustment! Sheamus battles out!
I think we’re coming to the end of this one here and the crowd seem to be backing Sheamus, booing every Cena punch!
Both men are on the top rope now…Cena goes for the Superplex but Sheamus kicks him away….Through the table!!!
We have a new WWE Champion here!
Shocked is an understatement, I’m sure they’ll make something of the lack of physical contact used to put Cena through the table, but it’s official!
The WWE has a British Champion!
The camera pans around a selection of disappointed Cena fans as the former WWE Champion rallies around in the ring.
Amazing scenes here and I admit, as much as I wanted to see it happen, I never expected it to.
Sheamus wins and becomes the NEW WWE Champion.
Match 5
World Heavyweight Championship Chair Match
The Undertaker (c)
Vs.
Batista
There’s been a lot of debate around what a Chairs Match would actually entail, so let me clear things up for you, or not as the case may be.
Tony Chimmel helpfully explained that this match can ONLY end by Pinfall or Submission, but Steel Chairs will be 100% legal.
I might be missing something here, but if it can ONLY end by Pinfall or Submission, doesn’t that mean that anything is 100% legal as there are no disqualifications?
Anyway, a load of chairs have been set up around the ringside area and I assume what we’re meant to read into it is that it’s a normal match where just chair shots are legal.
Taker’s entrance was fairly tame tonight, no druids, no flaming torches, no fog, barely even a prolonged walk.
Could we see a third title change hands tonight?
As the match begins Michael Cole clears things up, explaining that there ARE count outs, and there ARE disqualifications for basically everything other than chair shots.
So not what T.C said at all then.
This is beginning to get ridiculous now, the action has been on the outside for a good few minutes now, and the referee has made no effort to count anyone out.
I don’t think anyone actually knows the rules for this match, as they seem to be making them up as they go along.
The action has been bouncing back and forth so far, but Taker seems to have the upper hand at the minute, scoring the first near fall of the match just moments ago.
Batista counters the Old School and turns the tables with a Superplex, grabbing himself a long 2 count and giving him chance to grab a dreaded chair!
He’s going for a Batista Bomb… but Taker counters and backdrops The Animal onto the steel.
Neither man seems to be able to sustain offence here; Taker wins out in a Slugfest but Batista fires back with a Spinebuster, then moments later Taker hits a Flying Lariat and Old School.
The tides turn yet again as The Deadman hits Snake Eyes but catches a brutal Spear as he goes to follow up.
Batista hits the Spinebuster on the chair! He’s calling for the Batista Bomb now…
Hells Gate!
Batista fights and manages to escape via the bottom rope, but the damage could already be done!
The Animal grabs a chair and delivers a stiff shot to Taker’s ribs, but then drives his own head into one he’d set up in-between the ropes earlier.
Chokeslam! 1..2.. Batista barely kicks out! I thought that was it!
The Undertaker’s calling for the Tombstone..
Batista reverses it and then hits a Low Blow out of sight of the referee!
Chair to the head! 1..2..3 it’s all over!
Batista has done it! 3 of 4 titles have changed hands already…
No, wait! Teddy Long’s here.
He tells Batista there’s no reason to celebrate because a blatant Low Blow isn’t allowed, then restarts the match.
The Deadman sits up in the ring.. Chair Shot.. Tombstone! 1..2..3.
In a match that went back and forth more than a tennis ball at Wimbledon, the result has gone fist to Batista and now to The Deadman.
Interesting stuff, but I can’t help but feel the WWE Championship match would have been better going up after this one.
The Undertaker retains the World Heavyweight Championship by Pinfall.
Segment 2
Sidekicks?
Just prior to this match Legacy caught up with Kofi backstage as he warmed up.
They said they aren’t here to beat him down, as they are going to leave that to Orton in the ring later tonight.
Kofi says that he realises this is just mind games, with Orton getting his two sidekicks to spook him just before the match.
DiBiase says they are more than just sidekicks and that Kofi should be terrified because he’s never faced anyone the calibre of Orton one on one.
Kofi says that he thinks Orton is a coward for not coming to see him face to face, then makes a bee-line for The Viper’s dressing room to tell him so.
Kofi barges into Legacy’s dressing room, tells Orton he considers him a coward and doesn’t think he deserves another shot at the WWE gold ever again.
Match 6
Singles Match
Randy Orton
Vs.
Kofi Kingston
I’m surprised this one’s been given a slot so high up the card, but I’m quite happy as it shows how much faith they seem to be putting in the Ghanaian Sensation and his feud with Orton.
We’re about 5 minutes into this match now and after some back and forth I think we’ve just seen the spot of the night.
Kofi slid to the outside where The Viper awaited him then dodged an attack, sprung off the steps, off the apron, up to the top rope, spun round, flew with incredible hang time… right into Orton’s boots as he got caught in mid-air with a Dropkick.
Orton’s working the ribs pretty intently now, I really hope this match doesn’t deteriorate into the usual ‘work on an injury’ formula.
Ooh! Kingston hits the SOS out of nowhere, but it’s a really bad one and he lands on his neck during the flip.
Luckily there doesn’t seem to be any apparent signs of injury as Kofi hits a huge Cross-Body from the top rope moments later, scoring a near fall.
Orton reverses and begins to scout Kingston for an RKO, but Kofi hits a Dropkick followed by a Boom Drop, then begins to call for a Trouble in Paradise..
Hits it! 1..2.. Orton grabs the ropes, much to the dismay of the attending audience.
Orton cleverly rolls to the outside, then hits the Rope-Assisted DDT after Kofi expended a lot of energy dragging him back into the ring.
There could be a Punt coming here….
Kofi gets his elbow up to block it, but seems to take almost as much damage as a result.
RKO.. reversed into Trouble in Paradise.. reversed into another RKO which lands this time!
1..2..3! Orton picks up the win in this rubber match and may just have staked his claim to the #1 contendership for the WWE Championship.
After the match Matt Striker speculates that Kofi might have got a ‘stinger’ as a result of blocking the Punt.
I’m hoping this isn’t a way to write Kofi out just as he’s started to slot into the main event picture.
Another good match but I wouldn’t go as far as to say it was the best we have seen tonight.
Randy Orton wins by Pinfall.
Segment 3
The Animal Complains
Backstage Batista enters Teddy’s office and complains that he was robbed.
He blames Long and demands that he makes things right, threatening him with a steel chair.
Batista leaves and the camera closes in on Long, who looks visibly shaken up by the whole ordeal.
Main Event Match
Unified Tag Team Championship TLC Match
Jeri-Show (c)
Vs.
D-Generation X
So it looks like DanG called it right when he said this one would be the main event, saving a Cena/Sheamus rematch (which doesn’t look too likely now.)
Attending fans will be disappointed that DX didn’t cut any sort of pre-match promo here, I expected them to at least do the usual match introduction for HBK’s home-town fans.
Here we go guys and girls, it’s time for the MAIIIIIN EVENT!
HBK and Jericho tie up while Show and Triple H battle as the opening bell rings.
It doesn’t take long for Show to put Triple H on his back, but moments later The Game dumps the 7ft giant over the barricades and into the unsuspecting front row.
With Show out of the way Triple H grabs a table and props it up over wall to the timekeepers area, but quickly gets distracted by the lumbering champion and then end up fighting their way up the ramp.
Meanwhile Jericho sets up a table and tries to put HBK through it, but after some will they/won’t they they end up back in the ring.
Jericho goes for the Walls of Jericho but HBK spins out of it and goes for the Top Rope Elbowdrop, but this time Jericho counters by getting his knees up.
With HBK out of the picture Jericho heads to the top of the ramp and after reversing a Pedigree takes Triple H out too.
Michaels follows him and the pair end up duelling with chairs, eventually resulting with DX both flat on their backs and Jeri-Show heading for the ring.
As you’d expect, they recover and head to the ring too, preventing their opponents from reaching the titles and taking control of the match in one fell swoop.
Jericho takes some ladders to the ribs before DX begin to double team him with Show out on the outside.
DX hit some very unique offence, Double Supplexing a 20ft ladder onto Jericho’s back, before driving it into Show’s face.
Shawn begins to climb the ladder but The Big Show re-enters the ring and rescues his Tag Titles.
Jeri-Show are back in control now. I don’t get why Show doesn’t just lift Jericho up to the belts, he could probably reach them all on his own if he really wanted to.
DX are in trouble here; Jericho Bulldogs Triple H across a ladder then knocks HBK from the apron. Show drives The Game into a ladder which is propped up in the corner, then ties his leg up in it.
The San Antonio crowd try to get behind their home-town boy with a HBK chant, but it seems to have little effect.
High Knee from The Game! Followed by a ladder shot to both members of Jeri-Show, this could be the turning point!
Vintage Michaels with the top rope Elbow Drop on Show!
HBK’s tuning up the band.. but Jericho jumps into the ring and hits a Codebreaker!
Spinebuster from The Game on Jericho! Spear by The Big Show on Triple H!
Show is the only man still standing!
He sets up a huge ladder and begins to climb towards the gold…
Chair shot from The Game! But it doesn’t seem to phase the 7ft monster, who jumps from the ladder and palms the steel back into Triple H’s face.
Show starts climbing again but a combined effort from DX knocks him from the steel, right into a Pedigree!
HBK’s going for the gold now but Jericho tips the ladder, sending Michaels all the way to the outside and onto The Big Show.
Jericho’s climbing now, he’s got one hand on the gold!
Triple H has three attempts and eventually stops Jericho from getting the titles, Powerbombing him to the canvas and starting to climb himself.
Chokeslam! Show slams Triple H into the canvas now, before completely wrecking the 20ft ladder, for some reason or another.
Jericho gets another ladder and sandwiches DX inside it, getting Show to slam it down onto them before destroying yet another ladder with a display of sheer strength.
The crowd begin to chant for tables, I have to admit I’m with them.
Show Chokeslam’s both members of DX through a table while Jericho tries to climb one half of a ladder in the ring.
Realising it isn’t going to work, Jericho calls Show over and stands on his shoulders, heading towards the belts.
DX dive back into the ring and take advantage of the vulnerable situation.
HBK hits a Sweet Chin Music to Show, who drops Jericho over the top rope and through (well actually he bounced off) a table.
Another Sweet Chin Music and a ladder shot dumps Show to the outside, but there aren’t any ladders left to climb!
Triple H holds up the half of a ladder while HBK climbs it!
Shawn un-clips the title belts! DX have won tag gold for the first time in their storied careers!
DX win and become the NEW Unified Tag Team Champions.
The End Bit
Well, what an event it’s been!
3 of 5 titles changed hands, but none more shocking than Sheamus’ victory over John Cena.
Thanks for joining us tonight, I hope you’ll consider bookmarking us, or following us on Twitter/Facebook.
Merry Christmas everyone!
