SummerSlam 2009 Live Coverage!
Welcome again to SummerSlam 2009 with WWEBlog.co.uk and me; JayD.
SummerSlam 2009 almost didn’t happen for us as the phoneline at WWEBlog.co.uk Towers stopped working for the second time this month on Friday and as of writing this still hasn’t been repaired by our ever so caring providers.
Luckily we’ve found an alternative location for the event, after all we couldn’t let you guys down could we!
If you want to get in touch with me about anything at all tonight drop an email to Jayd@wweblog.co.uk and who knows, you might even get a mention!
Opening Segment
DX Are Baaaaaaack
DX took over the opening video for the show, firstly by displaying their varying talent at shadow puppetry then by breaking the whole thing completely.
The basic message was that DX are back and causing trouble already.
The arena looks great and we’re kicking things off tonight with the Intercontinental Championship match. I don’t mean to sound biased, but come on Dolph Ziggler!
Opening Match
Intercontinental Championship Match
Rey Mysterio
Vs.
Dolph Ziggler
Ziggler starts quickly and grabs a near fall within the first few seconds.
Rey is in yellow and purple tonight, Laker’s colours I assume?
Rey takes charge for a very short time until Ziggler catches him off the top rope and slammed him into the turnbuckle, gaining another 2 count.
Ziggler has been in control of this match pretty much from the word go, with only a few moments of offence from Rey, at this point I’m expecting Mysterio to pull off the victory at the death with 3 or 4 high risk moves. After all, so far this is fitting the ‘Mysterio’ style match to a tee.
Rey almost hits the 619 but Ziggler is able to avoid it and grab a 2 count from a Fame-Asser seconds later.
Rey now with a near fall after countering a whip into the ropes and spinning around Ziggler’s head like a helicopter propeller.
Huge DDT from Mysterio but Ziggler kicks out at 2.
619 from Mysterio, setting up for the big splash…Ziggler avoids the contact and rolls Mysterio up! 1…2… Rey kicks out!
A huge ‘Lets Go Ziggler/619′ chant war has broken out amongst the capacity crowd, brilliant stuff.
Ziggler sets up Rey on the top rope for a Gutbuster but Mysterio reverses it into a Huricanrana and picks up the 2 count moments later. Disappointing end to what was actually a really good match.
Rey Mysterio retains the Intercontinental Championship by Pinfall.
Segment 2
Swagger and M.V.P Interviewed
Josh asked both guys if they thought tonight’s match was a bit of a culture clash.
Swagger interrupted and blew his own trumpet while referring to M.V.P as a convict and a stepping stone in his career.
M.V.P says he wishes he had the upbringing Swagger had and although he made some terrible decisions he’s paid his dues and tonight he’s going to teach the spoilt little jock a lesson in life.
Match 2
Singles Match
M.V.P
Vs.
Jack Swagger
Swagger sweeps M.V.P from the 2nd turnbuckle early on and drops him on the back of his head, M.V.P looks groggy.
It’s been five or so minutes now and M.V.P still hasn’t got into this match at all, the closest he’s come is reversing out of an Abdominal Stretch.
Swagger with a massive clothesline and now a Camel Clutch locked in.
M.V.P reverses out of it and grabs his first 2 count of the match, things aren’t looking good so far for Montel.
M.V.P hits Ballin’ but Swagger powers out and then reverses the Playmaker, rolling up for a 2 count with a hand full of tights.
Swagger goes for a splash from the 2nd ropes but M.V.P gets his knees up and hits the ‘Drive By’ followed by the ‘Playmaker’ to pick up what seemed like an unlikely victory.
Nothing amazing in this match, too much was put on the big bump M.V.P took at the start.
M.V.P wins by Pinfall.
Segment 3
Betty’s Battle & Freddy Prinze Jnr.
Nancy O’Dell, someone I’m not familiar with, promoted the charity ‘Betty’s Battle’ then interviewed Freddy Prinze Jnr, last week’s guest host of Raw, who is at ringside.
He talks about Orton messing up Raw for him and said he’ll be back when he least expects it. He then says he’s looking forward to Cena destroying Orton tonight.
Match 3
Unified Tag Team Championship Match
Chris Jericho & The Big Show (c)
Vs.
Cryme Tyme
Jericho and Show have some new entrance music. Again it’s a remix of their singles themes and although it’s a slight improvement, it’s still pretty awful.
Before the match Jericho insulted the celebrity contingent of the L.A. crowd, then the rest of the L.A. crowd before moving on to some shameless self promotion.
Show apparently had something important to say, but just as he began to speak Cryme Tyme interrupted and headed to the ring to start the match.
Jericho and Show are in complete control so far, beating down JTG, making quick tags, cutting off the ring. You know, the usual.
JTG finally makes the tag and Shad goes toe to toe with Big Show, eventually getting hit with a Spear after spending too much time focusing on Jericho.
Jericho is back in the ring now, picking the bones after Big Show’s domination.
More underhanded tactics from the champions, knocking JTG off the apron then double teaming Shad while his partner inadvertently distracts the referee trying to get into the ring.
Shad with the big Powerslam! Can he make it to his corner… Yes he can! JTG hits the MugShot on Jericho then wastes time going for The Big Show.
JTG eventually covers but Show breaks it up and is sent tumbling from the ring by Shad for his efforts.
Jericho locks in the Walls of Jericho but JTG gets to the ropes.
As the referee attempts to get the hold broken Show strikes with a huge right hand, leaving Jericho to make the cover and retain the titles.
Chris Jericho & The Big Show retain the Unified Tag Team Championships by Pinfall.
Segment 4
C.M Punk Interviewed
Josh Mathews asks C.M Punk about his match tonight. Punk says while he’d like to talk about that, he has something better to discuss.
Punk holds up a screenplay called ‘Live for the moment: The Jeff Hardy Story’ and says one of his friends found it while working at an agency.
He says it culminates in Jeff beating Punk to retain the title tonight, then says while it might be a feel-good hit the ending is not based in reality.
Punk calls everyone in L.A fake then goes on one of his usual rants about people following Hollywood trends, finishing by saying that tonight he will re-write the end of the Jeff Hardy story with a brutal loss for the Charismatic Enigma.
Match 4
Singles Match
The Great Khali
Vs.
Kane
So it now seems to be common knowledge that Runjin Singh is Khali’s brother, as in genetic brother. It’s strange that never came up until now.
Khali Singh (as I assume he is now known) starts the match aggressively, dumping Kane out of the ring early on.
Man this match is sucking more than I expected, Kane doesn’t look to bad but Khali is incredibly sluggish and uncoordinated.
Kane goes for the Chokeslam, Khali goes for the Punjabi Plunge, neither man is able to deliver and the match goes on.
I need to grab an energy drink to keep me going through this one, someone keep an eye on it for me.
Kane finally takes Khali off his feet with a jumping Clothesline from the top rope. The Big Red Machine applys a Reverse Chinlock on the canvas which slows the match down even more, eugh.
The end of the match was as bad as the rest of it. Kane dragged Runjin Singh into the ring then took advantage by hitting a low Dropkick and DDT to pick up the win.
Kane wins by Pinfall.
Match 5
Tag Team Match
D Generation X
Vs.
Legacy
DX’s entrance was nothing short of amazing; Explosions galore, a truck full of U.S Soldiers that fired guns, green smoke everywhere and to top it all off Triple H and HBK rode to the ring on a tank which fired green fireworks from the turret.
I’m glad they haven’t gone over the top with this DX return.
After a good 5 or 10 minutes of playing to the crowd Triple H said it’s been a long time coming so.. Are You Ready?
Trips did the usual DX intro, telling Priceless ‘if you girls want a war, you got a war’ then HBK topped it off with his ‘if your not down with that’ line.
Priceless, or Legacy as they seem to be known now (Shouldn’t a tag team have a different name to the stable they are in?) have made their way to the ring and this match is just about to get underway.
King says if Legacy stand any chance of winning they need to dampen DX’s spirits early with some big offence. So far that hasn’t happened, with Triple H dominating Ted DiBiase.
Rhodes gets the tag and immediately tastes Triple H’s high knee. After some quiet contemplation Rhodes decides HBK might be the weak link and slaps him round the face, telling Triple H to tag him in.
HBK tags in and ties up with Rhodes, getting the better of him early but again taking a slap from the cocky young 3rd generation superstar.
Fired up, HBK takes it to Rhodes and eventually dumps him to the outside where Priceless regroup.
DiBiase gets the better of Michaels for a while until he is able to tag Triple H. The Game takes it to both members of Priceless with Spinebusters then tries to set up a Pedigree on DiBiase but Rhodes prevents it.
The match breaks down and HBK throws Rhodes to the outside before using Triple H as a springboard to shoot over the top rope and land on him.
As the referee tries to stop Rhodes and HBK brawling on the outside DiBiase hits Triple H with a seriously hard Low Blow, taking complete control of the match in seconds.
Priceless cut Triple H off and make quick tags until The Game hits a Backbreaker and starts moving towards his corner.
DiBiase tags in Rhodes who prevents Triple H from getting to Michaels and continues to get the better of his opponent.
Back Body Drop! Can Triple H get to his partner? No! DiBiase tags in and knocks HBK from the apron.
Slugfest between DiBiase and Triple H which ends with DiBiase on the outside. Triple H crawls to his corner while Rhodes helps his partner back into the ring.
Tags all round! HBK goes on the offensive, knocking Rhodes down and springing to his feet but DiBiase knocks him straight back down with an illegal clothesline.
Triple H attacks DiBiase on the outside and throws him into the front row, back in the ring Cody goes for a trademark HBK elbow from the top rope but comes up short.
HBK goes for the same thing but also fails to hit it, Rhodes and HBK battling on the top rope now.
Michaels gets the better of the situation and goes again the top rope Elbowdrop but Rhodes gets his knees up and scores a 2 count.
Rhodes goes for a tag but there’s no one there, Michaels locks in a Figure 4 but DiBiase returns to break it up before his partner taps out.
Pedigree…Countered!
Sweet Chin Music…Countered!
CrossRhodes to Michaels…1..2..Triple H breaks up the pinfall!.
Pedigree on Rhodes!
DreamStreet on Michaels!
Wow, well after that finisher-fest Triple H and DiBiase have brawled over the announce table while HBK and Rhodes are flat out in the ring.
Rhodes and HBK use each other to beat the 10 count, then HBK lands a Sweet Chin Music from out of nowhere!
1..2..3! DX have done it!
Excellent match. I didn’t expect it, but a really REALLY good match.
D Generation X win by Pinfall.
Match 6
ECW Championship Match
Christian (c)
Vs.
William Regal (w/Vladimir Kozlov & Ezekiel Jackson)
It’s all over before it’s even begun!
KillSwitch from Christian on Regal who was still removing his dressing gown thing. 1..2..3.
Jackson and Kozlov have beaten the hell out of the champion.
It’s disappointing that they’ve made Regal looks so weak here, this match could have been good but it looks like we’re going to have to wait a while to see it.
Thanks for coming ECW, although you really shouldn’t have bothered.
Christian retains the ECW Championship by Pinfall.
Match 7
WWE Championship Match
Randy Orton (c)
Vs.
John Cena
During the entrances Orton seemed to get a much more positive response from the fans than Cena did.
I wish they’d just turn Cena heel and make him interesting already, people don’t like him. Come on WWE, we WANT to hate him so just give us a good reason.
So far Orton has had the upper hand in this one and the crowd have shown how split the decision on Cena actually is, firing up with ‘Lets Go Orton/Lets Go Cena’ chant wars every few minutes.
Cena hits the 5-Knuckle Shuffle to get himself back into the match, although can’t hit the Attitude Adjustment and Orton regains control, grabbing a near fall after a Slam.
Orton hits the big DDT using the ropes, this could be it. 1..2.. Cena kicks out at 2 and 3/4.
Orton prepares for the Punt but Cena ducks it and hits the Throwback followed by a flying Leg Drop from the top rope for a 2 count. The crowd booed every second of it.
Cena begins setting up for the Attitude Adjustment and the crowd boo even more. Orton avoids it by grabbing the top rope, then both guys knock each other down with a double Clothesline.
Back on their feet now and a slugfest breaks out; Cena=Boo/Orton=Cheer.
Cena hits a big back body drop and looks to be closing in on a victory. Orton shoves the referee down to the ground and crawls to the outside, grabbing his belt and heading up the ramp.
Lilian Garcia then completely confuses herself (and everyone else), declaring Orton winner and NEW champion. She finally gets herself together and says that by order of Mr. McMahon, this match will continue and Orton can now lose the title by disqualification.
Thankfully Lilian is leaving the WWE, supposedly after tonight’s show.
Orton has now decided to leave the match completely, losing by count out. Lilian again says that the match will restart by order of Mr. McMahon and if Orton loses again by count out he will lose the title.
Who didn’t see that coming?
The match is quickly restarted and Orton rolls Cena up, grabbing the 3 count by using the ropes.
Orton is celebrating but he might be jumping the gun, another official has appeared and is ordering the match be restarted for a third time.
STF locked in by Cena, Orton is struggling to get to the ropes. Cena drags him back to the cenre of the ring.
What the hell? Someone has just jumped in the ring and attacked the referee!
Whoever it is has been escorted to the back by security, Orton is recovering on the outside and Cena looks completely perplexed. This quite frankly farcical match goes on.
Cena tries to pull Orton back into the ring but gets hung up on the ropes.
R.K.O! 1..2..3!
Orton retains the title against what turned out to be immense odds, this match ended up being better than I expected.
Randy Orton retains the WWE Championship by Pinfall.
Main Event Match
World Heavyweight Championship TLC Match
C.M Punk
Vs.
Jeff Hardy (c)
Both guys have made their way to the ring and we’re ready for the main event match.
Thanks everyone for joining us for what has been a pretty good show so far!
Punk starts strongly, beating Jeff down and going straight for a steel chair which he drives into Jeff’s midsection and then brings down on his back.
Punk is climbing early, he’s got his fingers on the gold but Jeff knocks the ladder down and things continue.
Punk is down on the outside now and Jeff begins to climb. The ladder is toppled much in the same way and things continue.
GTS attempted but Jeff avoids it and throws his opponent into the ladder face first, before setting up a steel chair and using it to go for the Wheel Kick in the corner.
Punk catches him and goes to drop him on the seat of the chair, but messes it up completely and Jeff ends up clipping the back support, it looked pretty bad.
The crowd want tables and Punk obliges, dragging one to the side of the ring before trying to wrap a steel chair around Jeff’s head.
Jeff avoids it and fights back, eventually landing a home-run swing into Punk’s side with the steel chair.
Jeff then lands the Wheel Kick using the chair, sending Punk’s back right into the corner of the guard rail, pretty brutal stuff so far from these guys.
Jeff has laid Punk on a table, he flies from the top rope and…misses spectacularly as his opponent moves out of the way seconds before impact.
Back in the ring now and Punk sets up a huge ladder which he begins to climb, Hardy makes the save and jumps over his rival, scurrying towards the gold himself.
Punk goes for the GTS on the ladder but Hardy reverses into a Sunset Flip Powerbomb leaving both men down on the canvas. The first to get up is going to be at a distinct advantage here.
Jeff is up and climbing the ladder, Punk hasn’t even stirred yet.
Jeff grabs the gold but Punk tips the ladder and sends him hurtling into the turnbuckle right next to where the table had been set up. I’d bet my bottom dollar Jeff was meant to fly right over the top and go through the table.
Punk hits a hellacious Superplex from the top rope onto the ladder. Both men are down and devastated.
Twist of Fate! Seconds after they are back to their feet Jeff hits the ToF and begins to scale the corner for the Swanton. Punk gets his knees up and we’re back to where we were a minute ago, both men down in the ring.
Punk goes through the table! Jeff reverses the Bulldog and throws Punk over the top rope, right through the waiting wood.
Jeff is half way up the ladder when Punk springboards over the ropes and knocks him back to the canvas. Both men are now on the outside in front of the announce table.
Again Punk wraps the chair around Hardy’s neck but he manages to avoid impact yet again and begins whaling away on the Straight Edge Superstar with the steel.
Another table is set up but Jeff seems more occupied in stripping down the ECW announce table. Shot with the monitor to Punk’s head! Punk is now laying on the announce table, motionless.
Jeff has the biggest ladder I’ve ever seen and has set it up next to the announce table. At the top he goes for it all with a Swanton…and nails it!
To steal a phrase from J.R ‘Oh my god these two must be broken in half!’
As EMT’s load Jeff onto a stretcher C.M Punk crawls into the ring and begins to climb, surely not this way!
Jeff jumps from the board and makes it back into the ring, both men are struggling to climb but Punk grabs the gold. Now Jeff has his hands on the belt!
Kick to the ribs, Punk has thrown Jeff from the top of the ladder!
C.M Punk unhooks the title for the win. The crowd don’t like it and despite it being an amazing match I’m not to keen on the ending either.
As Punk stands over Jeff with the title, the lights begin to flicker, then return to normal.
The lights cut out and a bell tolls! When the lights come up nothing seems different…then what everyone assumed was Jeff sat up and grabbed Punk by the throat!
Chokeslam from The Undertaker! The Deadman is back!
Amazing ending to what has been a very strong PPV event.
C.M Punk wins the match and becomes the NEW World Heavyweight Champion.
The End
As always thanks for joining us for this WWE Pay Per View event.
I hope you enjoyed our coverage and consider joining us again for future events, we’ll miss you if you don’t!
SummerSlam was great all in all and if the Kane Vs. Khali match could have been replaced by something else it could have been near perfect.
Well, that’s it. Goodnight folks, we’ll see you all at Breaking Point!
