SummerSlam 2009 Confirmed Matches & Mini-Preview

Find out what matches are currently scheduled to take place at SummerSlam 2009.
The following matches have been confirmed for SummerSlam on August 23rd at the Staples Centre in L.A.
Intercontinental Championship Match
Singles Match
Dolph Ziggler
Vs.
Rey Mysterio (c)
Rey Mysterio held onto the Intercontinental Title by the skin of his teeth at Night of Champions, as Dolph Ziggler pushed him to the limit in what many considered the match of the PPV.
After defeating Finlay, Mike Knox and R-Truth in a #1 Contendership Fatal 4 Way Match Ziggler once again attempted to get in Mysterio’s face and punk him out, but on this occasion it backfired as Rey delivered a Seated Senton from the announce table.
Ziggler will get his chance to avenge this as well as claim the Intercontinental Championship for himself at SummerSlam, and if previous form is anything to go by it should be a tremendous match.
Unified Tag Team Championship Match
Tag Team Match
Chris Jericho & The Big Show
Vs.
Cryme Tyme
Jericho and The Big Show have been together a little under a month but they have already stamped their dominance across both Raw and Smackdown.
With a ridiculously high number of title reigns between them, something the pair of them haven’t been shy about mentioning, Cryme Tyme have a big task on their hands if they hope to have their first taste of WWE gold at SummerSlam.
In the lead up to the title match JTG got a somewhat unlikely victory over Jericho on Raw.
The Big Show was then able to claw back some credibility for his team just a few days later on Smackdown, making JTG tap out to the Colossal Clutch while Jericho incapacitated Shad on the outside.
Despite their lack of title credentials Cryme Tyme have the advantage of being an experienced team, something that could be invaluable when trying to pry the gold from the dominant champions.
Grudge Match
Singles Match
Jack Swagger
Vs.
M.V.P
The rivalry between these two competitors began shortly after Swagger moved to Raw in thr 10-person draft.
Since then Swagger has made it his business to dredge up M.V.P’s past and cost him matches, whilst avoiding fighting him in the ring at all costs.
When the two met just 6 days before SummerSlam, Swagger intentionally beat down his opponent in the corner, leaving the referee no choice but to disqualify the All-American American and cut the match short.
Will M.V.P finally get his hands on Swagger at SummerSlam? Or will the slippery former-ECW Champ find another way to avoid fighting? Follow our Live Results on the night to find out!
Grudge Match
Singles Match
The Great Khali
Vs.
Kane
Khali and Kane are no strangers to each other.
Meeting initially at WrestleMania XXIII and then again a few months later on Smackdown, the two gargantuan superstars are tied up at 1 victory a-piece.
The Big Red Machine made an impact when he returned at The Bash, costing Khali what should have been a dominant victory against Dolph Ziggler.
However Kane didn’t stop there and instead continued to involve himself in Khali’s business, even kidnapping his interpreter Runjin Singh in order to orchestrate a sneak attack.
At SummerSlam Khali will have his chance to gain revenge, while both men will have the opportunity to prove they are the better big man by winning this rubber match.
ECW Championship Match
Singles Match
Christian(c)
Vs.
William Regal
After claiming the title from his pal Tommy Dreamer at Night of Champions, then beating him once again in an Extreme Rules match, Christian was clearly ready for a new challenge.
Abraham Washington introduced him to this new challenge; William Regal.
Regal immediately stated his credentials, sending a message to Christian by defeating Tommy Dreamer then punishing him with a Regal Stretch.
Can Regal finally top the tree and pick up a Heavyweight Championship? Or will Christian keep hold of his coveted ECW Strap? Follow our Live Results on the night to find out!
Grudge Match
Tag Team Match
D Generation X
Vs.
Legacy
It took The Game a while to realise it, but finally he figured out that Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase are the main reason he hasn’t been able to pry the WWE Championship away from their leader Randy Orton.
After challenging them to a 2 on 1 match he also realised that perhaps he couldn’t beat them on his own, so instead looked to his old DX team mate Shawn Michaels.
Michaels hadn’t been seen in the WWE since losing to The Undertaker back in April and as Triple H went in search of him it became apparent why; He had a job as a chef.
After some persuasion from both The Game and his current boss, Michaels decided to ditch the chef’s smock and return to help his friend take on Priceless at SummerSlam.
6 days prior to Michaels in-ring return Rhodes & DiBiase mercilessly attacked DX, leaving them battered and broken in the ring.
Will DX be able to reform and get back to winning ways at SummerSlam?
World Heavyweight Championship Match
TLC Match
C.M Punk
Vs.
Jeff Hardy (c)
The C.M Punk/Jeff Hardy saga rolls on, although this time the two will meet in a match that on paper should favour Jeff Hardy; Tables, Ladders & Chairs!
Punk has been eager to point out in recent weeks that despite not having the experience that Jeff does, he’s pretty well accomplished in Ladder matches and knows how to use a chair to deliver maximum damage.
The biggest talking point surrounding this match will undoubtedly be the involvement of Matt Hardy, and where his true allegiances lie.
For months Matt did everything in his power to make his brother’s life a living hell, but in the weeks leading up to SummerSlam he has helped Jeff retain the title and came to his aid when Punk looked like injuring the World Heavyweight Champion with a steel chair.
Has Matt finally realised that blood is thicker than water? Or is there another twist in this tale?
WWE Championship Match
Singles Match
Randy Orton (c)
Vs.
John Cena
Cena grabbed this title opportunity by winning a Beat the Clock Challenge set by Raw guest host Shaquille O’Neal, beating The Miz in by far the quickest time of the night.
Between then and SummerSlam Cena and Orton were forced to team up in order to combat The Big Show and Chris Jericho.
Cena and Orton were able to defeat the current Unified Tag Team Champions just 6 days before SummerSlam, however there was no love lost between the two and Orton grabbed the upper hand with an RKO just seconds after the bell.
Will Orton retain his title or will Cena be able to claim the WWE Championship? Follow our Live Results on the night to find out!
