Live Royal Rumble Results
The Royal Rumble Pay Per View is underway.
Jack Swagger defeats Matt Hardy to retain the ECW Championship.
Swagger focused on Hardy’s left arm for the majority of what was a very good opening match. Hardy hit a brutal moonsault towards the end of the bout and looked to have it won, but Swagger kicked out and rammed Matt’s head and shoulder into the ringpost before hitting a jacknife powerbomb for the win seconds later.
Footage is shown of Randy Orton arriving at the arena earlier in the day. Half the roster stand back and watch as he walks past them, with a very ‘dead man walking’ type vibe to it.
Melina defeats Beth Phoenix to win the WWE Women’s Championship
A Santino chant echoed around the arena as things got underway, and for the most part the crowd seemed to pay more attention to him than the match going on in the ring. In-fact other than the odd moment or two the crowd didn’t seem into this match at all, which is a shame because the quality of wrestling was actually quite high.
Melina eventually picked up the win with an inventive standing body scissors into a sort of sunset flip, becoming the new Women’s Champion and ending Beth Phoenix’s 5 month reign.
Before the World Heavyweight Championship match JBL explains to Shawn Michaels that when he becomes champion tonight Shawn will be paid everything he is owed and never have to work for him again. He also drops the bombshell that should he win the match, Shawn will have a spot in the Rumble. After JBL leaves The Undertaker appears and informs HBK that sometimes you have to go through hell to get to heaven.
John Cena defeats JBL to retain the World Heavyweight Championship.
Once again Cena managed to divide the crowd, with sections of the match being accompanied by ‘Lets go Cena’ Vs. ‘Cena Sucks’ chant battles. HBK seemed reluctant to get involved for the majority of the match although did provide a few distractions, allowing JBL take advantage.
JBL accidentally hit the ref with a big boot sending him flying out of the ring giving HBK the oppertunity to get involved. Just when it looked like he would hit Cena with a Sweet Chin Music Shawn pulled a swerve and hit JBL instead. A smug smile was soon wiped off Cena’s face when he too tasted the Showstoppers boot, before having JBL’s limp body dragged over him for what looked to be the 3 count.
However, Cena kicked out and without HBK at ringside soon dispatched JBL with a F-U to retain his title. This actually ended up being a brilliant match despite pretty sloppy wrestling from both men.
What does this mean for HBK? Is he still broke? Is he in the Rumble? Hopefully by the end of the night we’ll know the answer.
Edge defeats Jeff Hardy to win the WWE Championship
Before this match began Vikki decided to make it a No D.Q bout, and as Edge emerged with Chavo in tow it became clear it wasn’t to stop Jeff retaining his title by D.Q as she claimed but in fact to give Edge the advantage.
(Incidentally what is going on with Jeff’s face recently? Despite not really fitting in with his character his bizarre face paint seems to be getting stranger by the PPV, tonight he is reminiscent of the ECW Zombie.)
(Announce) Tables, Ladders and Chairs all featured prominently in this match. Jeff slipped rather than jumped from the top of a ladder onto Chavo who was laying on the middle announce table, taking him out of the match.
The end of the match saw interference from Vikki and Matt Hardy, who suggested a Con-chair-to before drilling his own brother with the chair! Amazing scenes as the crowd can’t believe what has just happened. Edge covers for the 3 count during the shock and wins the WWE Championship.
The whole match seemed to be leading to a Christian return, and it seems that the fans are not the only ones paying attention to the rumours surrounding him. Great match again with a great finish.
Tod Grisham began to inverview Orton before Jericho appeared and gave Randy his support over the whole McMahon issue, but said he believes it will be his last night as an employee of World Wrestling Entertainment.
Time for the Royal Rumble bout! J.R and King reunite to call this match together.

The Winner of the 2009 Royal Rumble : Randy Orton
Final Thoughts
A brilliant Royal Rumble match which only had one truly surprising entrant, although it is great to see R.V.D back and hopefully he will stick around for a while.
Just because Randy won the Rumble don’t bank on him going to Wrestlemania, given what he did to Vince there are likely to be a few twists and turns before all is said and done.
A BIG thank you…
