Smackdown Elimination Chamber Match
As I’ve noted before I wasn’t expecting this match to be the first on the card, but I’m glad in the end it was as two back to back Chamber matches would have been a bit much at the end of the show and it gave time for Edge to have calculated his plan to enter the Raw one.
The writers clearly capitalised on the fact that removing the Champion early on in the match raises excitement and interest, it also meant that Edge would be fairly fresh going into the second chamber and Jeff got a small measure of revenge over him without having to win the title again.
The thing I overlooked before this match was that unless Kozlov won, his ‘unbeaten’ streak (that has seen him lose at least two times, but never actually be pinned himself) would have to come to an end. This did indeed happen and very little was made of it by the commentary team, no doubt this week on Smackdown Kozlov will be touted as ‘undefeated in singles competition’.
A good match all in all and very difficult to call at the end when it was going back and forth between Triple H and Taker. Both guys could have had the match won a number of times and the boo’s from the crowd made it really obvious who they were rooting for. I’m quite glad Taker didn’t win it, as another Orton Vs. Taker match would have been difficult to hype. Now we potentially get to see him Vs. HBK and Triple H looks to be Orton’s likeliest pick for who he faces at mania, either that or Stephanie will make sure he is.
Speaking of which….
Orton Vs. Shane McMahon
This one was good too, but for me came just a little too early in the card. This was, in my opinion a more entertaining match than the HBK Vs. JBL bout that came just before the main event, as much as I like HBK and respect JBL’s mic work and attitude to the business, it was never going to be a great match in terms of wrestling. To be honest neither was this one, but it had the brutality factor which personally I enjoy (I secretly wish on a daily basis that they’d bring back the Hardcore title.)
It was obvious Priceless were going to get involved and I’m surprised they waited until the next night on Raw for Stephanie and Triple H to get involved with it all, but I’m really loving the way they have brought The Game and Orton together by using this McMahon rivalry. Certainly an angle that I look forward to seeing develop each week.
Where’s Christian?
The ECW title match was alright, but it lacked a bit of excitement. The rivalry between Finlay and Swagger was poor at best and it would have made more sense (to me at least) for Christian to be involved with Swagger and the title as soon as possible, perhaps by making this a triple threat.
As it was Christian didn’t even feature and the only talking point was that Hornswoggle cost Finlay the match rather than helping him, which I assume is going to lead to a situation where Finlay doesn’t want his ’son’ at ringside anymore.
Hopefully Christian will be on ECW and can properly get a feud started with Swagger leaving enough time to build it for Wrestlemania. I’d prefer him to be in a higher profile match, but I think it is clear now that he is being held back for some reason or another.
Shawn liberates himself
Probably the least entertaining match of the night, other than the ECW bout, which really shows the strength of this event as this would have been one of the better matches on a fair few of the WWE pay per views in 2008.
Shawn put in a good performance as usual and sold the magnitude of the situation well, considering using a chair in the opening moments but fighting back his rage. Even JBL didn’t have a particularly bad match, but there didn’t seem to be much to it and I was glad when it finished and the main event could begin.
Elimination Chamber Part 2
Before this match as you might of read I couldn’t see any outcome other than a win for Cena. Jericho, Kane and Mysterio are all tied up for ‘mania, Knox and Kingston were never likely to win it. To have Edge attack the least likely to win the match and replace him was a stroke of genius, I had a feeling something like that would happen at the Rumble if Edge didn’t beat Hardy for the title, but I didn’t expect it at all this time around.
Of course as soon as Edge became a part of the match it was obvious he would have some part to play in the finish, and when it came down to him against Mysterio at first I thought it was going to be obvious which one picked up the win. However, after a while I started to wonder if Mysterio would get the title, and depsite disliking him with a passion, actually found myself willing him on to win.
He didn’t, and as a result Smackdown technically has two champions. I expect Triple H will move to Raw in the next few weeks, that or some sort of champion switch at the Draft the night after WMXXV.
Hopefully Kofi will get some sort of push as compensation for being pulled from the title match so abruptly, but I highly doubt it. I also wish Kane would get the push he so desperately deserves, but it is much more likely that he and Knox will end up jobbing to Mysterio and Bourne at Mania.
Finally..
No Way Out continued the Rumble’s trend in improving on last years Pay Per Views, which were slightly lack-lustre at times and in some cases seemed to be one or two showpiece matches padded out with average matches and/or performances.
I hope this continues throughout the year as things have really been improving recently, storylines seem to be getting more depth again and there are a lot of talented wrestlers climbing the ladder.
