We have a new little feature for you tonight; Quick Links! To make it easier for you to navigate through I’ll put links here to each match so you can jump to them in the blink of an eye rather than scrolling through reams of text.

Intercontinental Championship Match: Rey Mysterio Vs. Chris Jericho
WWE Championship Match: Randy Orton Vs. Batista

With that covered, on with the show!

    Opening Match

    Singles Match
    C.M Punk
    Vs.
    Umaga

Probably the weakest match (in terms of storyline) starts the card tonight.

J.R and Todd Grisham were quick to explain why this match has come about, but even they struggled to spin it out past the basic ‘Umaga attacked him a few times’.

Umaga has started strongly and is maintaining control despite Punk hitting some high flying offence early on.

Umaga continues to dominate and grabbed a near-fall after Punk foolishly tried to Bodyslam the Samoan Bulldozer, to no avail.

It looks like the beginning of the end for Umaga as he flies from the second rope only to headbutt the canvas, Punk goes on the offence and hits a flying cross body over the top rope just moments later.

A series of big kicks and knees from Punk before a Bulldog from the second rope grabs him a 2 count, although Umaga kicks out with massive authority.

Flying Forearm from Punk! Grabs another near fall with a slightly less enthusiastic kick out. Punk goes for the GTS but can’t get the giant Samoan off his feet and ends up taking a Samoan Drop himself.

Umaga begins calling for the Samoan Spike but Punk ducks it and hits 3 big kicks to the head before once again going for the GTS. He can’t get him up again and seconds later Umaga hits a big kick of his own, before following up with that big butt-splashy thing he does in the corner and a Samoan Spike.

The three count was inevitable by that poin and Umaga wins the first victory in this rivalry, beating Punk in his own home town.

    Umaga wins by Pinfall.

    Segment 1

    Vickie, Chavo and Show

Backstage Chavo tells Vickie that Cena has been cleared to wrestle tonight. She says she is surprised that he didn’t back out like she thought he would and began coo’ing about it.

Big Show then warned her that she’d already lost Triple H and if she lets the match go ahead tonight she will lose Cena too which may be bad for business. Vickie said she isn’t worried because the WWE is bigger than John Cena and someone will step up to fill his boots. Show said he knew exactly who would step up, before walking out of the office and passing Edge on his way.

Edge then walked up to Vickie and said they needed to talk. Chavo left them on their own and the cameras cut away. Intriguing, no?

    Match 2

    ECW Championship Match
    Christian (c)
    Vs.
    Jack Swagger

So we have a re-match of the Backlash opener here.

Christian almost hit the KillSwitch early then indicated to Swagger that he just came incredibly close to winning it.

Both men end up on the outside. Swagger takes control and lifts Christian above his head, throwing him into the steel ring post before heading back into the ring and locking in a Body-Scissors.

Back and forth action which saw Christian hit two Fulcrum Prison Blues’ before diving off the top rope and getting nothing but canvas.

Very near fall for Swagger after he reversed a Sunset Flip then moments later the same thing for Christian after a reverse DDT from the second rope.

Swagger almost stole one, grabbing Christian’s tights on a roll-up. Luckily the eagle-eyed official spotted it and refused to count the three.

However, seconds later he failed to spot Christian pulling exactly the same trick to retain the ECW Championship, lowering Swagger’s straps before pulling the tights on a roll-up to gain added purchase to the pinfall.

Bottom line is Christian retains the ECW Championship but this rivalry seems far from over.

Christian wins by Pinfall and retains the ECW Championship.

    Segment 2

    Edge and Chavo

Backstage Chavo is attempting to listen in on Edge and Vickie’s conversation when the Rated R Superstar comes out. Chavo asks him what they have been talking about and after a little banter Edge explains that he isn’t happy that a cross-dressing freak has been calling his wife a pig.

Furthermore he isn’t happy that Chavo has done nothing about it.

    Match 3

    Singles Match
    John Morrison
    Vs.
    Shelton Benjamin (w/Charlie Haas)

As I predicted Haas has accompanied Shelton for this match, giving the Gold Standard a distinct advantage.

It doesn’t take long for Haas’ presence to be felt as he distracts Morrison while on the top rope allowing Shelton to hit a big kick, sending his opponent to the outside.

Shelton continued to dominate the match until both men knocked heads and the playing field was levelled.

Things went back and forth for a while until a botched spot saw Shelton fail to control a Powerbomb, slamming Morrison’s neck into the middle turnbuckle.

Luckily no damage was done and seconds later Morrison had knocked Charlie Haas from the ring apron. Shelton attempted a splash during the distraction, but Morrison was able to move before hitting the Chuck Kick and Starship Pain to grab the win.

Not quite as good as I’d hoped but a very very enjoyable match and hopefully not the last we see between these two.

    John Morrison wins by Pinfall.

    Segment 3

    The Miz goes 4-0

The Miz comes out while King and Michael Cole explain how he has called an injured Cena out for the past 3 weeks then declared himself victorious when he hasn’t appeared.

Before addressing Cena The Miz had a pop at John Morrison, likening him to Marty Janetty and saying this won’t be the last time he tops one of his performances.

He then moved on to Cena, saying he as a lovable loser just like the Cubs. He then goes on to insult one of their star players who is sat at ringside, saying he will never win a World Series while playing for the Cubs.

After some more jabbering The Miz declares himself  the winner of yet another match against Cena before Santino comes out and interrupts him.

Santino calls him ‘Fizz’, then says that he has come out to say that he has noticed a lot of WWE Superstars are beginning to resemble animals. He says Vickie looks like a pig, Vladimir Kozlov looks like Sam the American Eagle and The Miz looks like a Jackass.

The Miz challenges Santino, then drills him and looks to get the upper hand. Santino fights back and the two end up brawling around the ring before Miz finally gets the upper hand and hits a massive DDT.

After some posing The Miz leaves and Chavo enters, taking advantage of the barely concious Santino by hitting a frog splash on his lifeless body.

    Segment 4

    Jericho Interview

Josh Matthews asks Jericho why he thinks there is a conspiracy against him. Jericho goes into his usual ‘hard done to’ speech before targeting it more towards Rey Mysterio, saying he doesn’t get by on talent but rather a biased G.M and the blind support of the fans.

He again guarantee’s that Mysterio will not hit the 619 tonight and that he will leave with the Intercontinental Championship.

    Match 4

    Intercontinental Championship Match
    Rey Mysterio (c)
    Vs.
    Chris Jericho

I might be wrong, but early in this match it sounded like the crowd had started a pretty loud ‘Y2J’ chant that went on for quite a while. I personally think Jericho makes a great heel, but I really don’t care for the current gimmick he has going on, it’s far too repetitive and is getting a bit boring already.

Jericho started the match by taking advantage any way he could, reversing a possible 619 situation and using it to his advantage.

After an amazing spinning Backbreaker Jericho grabbed a near fall which he clearly thought should have been a three as he chewed out the ref, claiming it was a slow count.

Jericho attempts to unmask Mysterio but the Ultimate Underdog manages to avoid it happening and the match continues.

Jericho locks in the Walls of Jericho after dodging two 619 attempts. Mysterio looks like he is in trouble but manages to reverse the pressure and roll Jericho up for a 2 count.

    Rey hits the 619!

A Big Splash follows and once again Mysterio has pulled a win out of almost nothing. A pretty good match to start the rivalry off but I expect we will see better from these two.

Rey Mysterio wins by Pinfall and retains the Intercontinental Championship.

    Match 5

    WWE Championship Match
    Randy Orton
    Vs.
    Batista

Why this match is before the Cena/Big Show match is completely beyond me.

I doubt this is going to be a classic, but I’m sure it’s going to be better than what we get from a supposedly less than 100% Cena taking on the cumbersome Big Show.

No Priceless so far but I’m sure we’ll see them before this match is over, the fact that this match is so low down the card makes me wonder if anyone will actually return to aid The Animal. If Triple H were to return I’d expect them to have something like that a little higher up the card, but we’ll see.

Orton begins the match by immediately slithering to the outside. Batista is sporting a rather large stitched gash on his forehead which looks like it could rip open at any moment, I suppose that would liven things up if nothing else.

Batista grabs the first near fall of the match but Orton kicks out.

More offence from The Animal as he whips Orton into the corner with authority, but Orton uses his usual sly tactics to dump Batista to the outside before Backdropping him onto the guard rail.

After sustaining a long period of domination Orton hit his trademark DDT using the ropes and it looked like things might be all but sewn up.

Batista somehow managed to kick out and then avoid the Punt, instead hitting a massive Spear and shifting the momentum in his favour.

After losing out to Batista in a slugfest Orton wisely slid to the outside and told the referee to count him out. Batista chased after him and managed to bring him back in just before the count reached 10.

Moments later Orton grabbed a steel chair and looked to be trying to get intentionally disqalified, but Batista stopped him in his tracks then hit some rare tope rope offence, scoring with a flying shoulder from the top rope.

Orton grabbed his title belt from ringside and began to leave, but Batista once again brought him back to the ring and almost landed a Batista Bomb.

Orton just slapped the referee! Disqualification!

Priceless hit the ring and begin beating Batista to a pulp but just when it looks bleak for The Animal, Ric Flair’s music hits the speakers and The Nature Boy comes to Batista’s aid, clearing the ring in double quick time and sending Orton to the back with his tail between his legs.

Batista wins by Disqualification. Therefore Randy Orton retains the WWE Championship.

    Match 6

    Singles Match
    The Big Show
    Vs.
    John Cena

Cena is already playing on his injuries before a single move has been hit, I’m really not looking forward to this one.

As predicted Show begins focusing on the phantom rib injury that Cena supposedly has. While Show systematically destroys Cena in the ring the fans begin a chant battle with ‘Lets go Cena’ squaring up against ‘Cena Sucks’. If I was there I certainly know what I’d be chanting.

Show throws Cena to the outside and could easily have won the match on a count out, but instead the 7ft giant followed and slammed Cena’s ribs into the ring post.

Everything Cena attempts seems to backfire and after a failed Bulldog Show begins some more slow paced offence *yawn*.

Bearhug from Big Show, just what this match needed to liven things up…

Cena finally mounts some offence and the crowd don’t seem to like it but a Five Knuckle Shuffle later and some of the more fickle fans are now cheering for him.

Show regains control quickly and begins setting Cena up near the corner. I honestly don’t get why Show keeps going for the corner move, but for the first time in like…ever he actually hits the splash and gets a 2 count.

Seconds later and normal service is resumed as Show misses a 2nd rope splash in the opposite corner.

For the third time in the match Cena attempts to lock in the STF but the sheer size of Show prevents him from doing so.

Show calls for the ‘Big Right Hand’ and begins stalking his opponent but Cena manages to duck and hit the Attitude Adjustment to pick up an unlikely victory.

    John Cena wins by Pinfall.

    Main Event Match

    World Heavyweight Championship Match
    Edge (c)
    Vs.
    Jeff Hardy

So here we are at the main event already. I have to say tonight’s show has felt like it has come a couple of weeks too soon, as many of the matches involved rivalries that had barely gotten going and would have benefited from a little longer to develop.

This match is different as there is a lot of history between Edge and Jeff but perhaps not enough to make this a better match than the first time they met at The Royal Rumble.

Jeff has come out in his bizarre face paint although it seems considerably toned down in comparison to some of his recent facial masterpieces.

After Edge has a little ‘moment’ with the title belt he hands it over to the referee and this match begins.

After some back and forth to start the match Edge takes control by spearing Jeff from the apron to the floor. He seems to be focusing on Hardy’s lower back and right now it looks like this result could be academic. However, this is the WWE so I’m sure there will be more to come here.

Jeff manages to fight back into it but goes for some high risk offence from the top and crashes to the canvas. Jeff again begins to fight back into it while J.R babbles on about his face paint being some sort of  lucky omen.

Sharpshooter from Jeff Hardy! Edge fights through the pain and makes it to the bottom rope to break the hold.

Twist of Fate! Long 2 count.

Jeff begins climbing to the top turnbuckle but Edge gets to his feet and joins him. Jeff hits a Sunset Flip and gets another long 2 count but still can’t quite grab the win.

Both men end up on the outside where Jeff strips the Smackdown announce table and part of the guard rail. He throws Edge onto the table after bouncing him off the exposed rail, then looks to run along the top and land a high impact move on Edge.

The Rated R Superstar sees him coming and hits a mid-air Spear which leaves Hardy crumpled on the outside. Hardy barely beats the 10 count  but then mounts some big offence hitting a Twist of Fate through the ring ropes. Edge uses the ropes to break the pin and the match continues.

Whisper in the Wind! Another long 2 count.

Again both men end up on the outside where Jeff throws his body into Edge and sends them both flying over the security wall.

    Matt Hardy!

Matt Hardy makes his way through the crowd and strikes Jeff with the cast on his arm while Edge distracted the referee. Edge rolls Jeff into the ring and covers but somehow he manages to kick out.

Edge misses the Spear and Jeff attempts to climb to the top rope but physically can’t. Edge takes advantage of the situation and hits one of the meanest Superplexes I’ve ever seen to grab the three count and retain his title.

It was like a cross between a Superplex and a DDT, nasty ending to a great match.

Edge wins by Pinfall and retains the World Heavyweight Championship.

    The End

Well that’s it from Judgement Day. Certainly not the best Pay Per View so far this year but with the short space of time since Backlash I think they did a pretty good job.
