Results from Extreme Rules 2009!
Firstly apologies to everyone who wanted to follow these results with us live and as they happened. Trust me I was as annoyed as anyone that things worked out as they did and I couldn’t see the PPV live, but I’m going to write them up as if I was watching live for anyone who might want to know what happened in the future.
We’ve kept the quick links feature from Judgement Day as it seemed to go down really well. For anyone who didn’t join us for J.D, to make it easier for you to navigate through the results I’ll put links here to each match so you can jump to them in the blink of an eye rather than scrolling through reams of text.
(Note: If the quick link still says TBA it is referring to the order of matches not being confirmed rather than the match itself. To see all the matches scheduled to take place at Extreme Rules see the ‘Confirmed Matches’ page.

With that covered, on with the show!
Opening Match
United States Championship Fatal 4 Way Match
Kofi Kingston (c)
Vs.
William Regal
Vs.
Matt Hardy
Vs.
M.V.P
This one was added to the card very late in the day and although it should be a very good bout, I can’t see anyone other than Kofi picking up the win and retaining the title.
Despite seemingly forming a tag team in recent weeks, Regal was quick to attack Hardy at the start of the bout placing the two at loggerheads while Kingston and M.V.P chose to work together as a team wherever possible.
There was a horribly botched spot a few minutes in where Regal set Kingston up for a Superplex and M.V.P joined in too. However, M.V.P slipped from the bottom rope leaving the other two to tumble to the ring, luckily it doesn’t seem like anyone was seriously injured and all three men are back up and battling.
Near falls for Hardy, Kofi and M.V.P but always someone around to break the count.
M.V.P hits ‘Ballin’ on Hardy but Regal is quick to break the count and take advantage of the situation.
Trouble in Paradise out of nowhere on Regal! Kingston picks up the three count and retains the U.S Championship!
Not a bad match but quite short when you consider the amount of talent involved.
Kofi Kingston wins by Pinfall and retains the United States Championship.
Segment 1
Big Show isn’t worried
In a pre-recorded interview Josh Matthews visits The Big Show and asks him if he is worried about his match with Cena later tonight. Show says he has shown conclusively that Cena can’t lock on the STF and so if anyone should be worried it should be his opponent. Pointless rubbish really.
Match 2
Intercontinental Championship No Holds Barred Match
Rey Mysterio (c)
Vs.
Chris Jericho
Jericho’s music plays but he fails to appear and a few moments later he reveals that he is backstage at the merchandise stands. He does his usual thing about Mysterio being a liar and having something to hide, saying he doesn’t think it is right that the WWE sell replicas of his masks.
He then makes his way through the crowd explaining why he attacked Rey posing as a fan a few weeks ago, shouting and threatening anyone who dared touch him.
Once in the ring he repeated his intentions of removing Rey’s mask and taking his title.
Mysterio made his way to the ring and gave one lucky fan one of his replica mask while J.R explained what the mask means to a Mexican Luchadore like Rey; a lot.
Rey was as aggressive as I’ve ever seen him at the start of this match, beating Jericho down and out of the ring in a matter of seconds, before drilling him with part of the announce table and sending him into the guard rail.
Back in the ring Jericho gained the upper hand for a while before things began to go back and forth, culminating in a number of near falls for both men and an attempted Walls of Jericho.
Jericho almost ripped the mask off Mysterio but couldn’t quite get it done, then seconds later hit the ringpost with full force allowing Rey to take advantage once more.
619! Rey sets up for the Seated Senton and…Codebreaker! Jericho with a brilliant reversal and that has to be it! Mysterio kicked out much to the shock of pretty much everyone in the arena, none moreso than Jericho who grabs a steel chair.
The plan backfired and Jericho ended getting a face full of the steel three times, once from a Sabu style chair leg drop.
Rey attempted a springboard off the chair but got caught in a Walls of Jericho, he managed to grab the chair and use it to escape.
Rey goes for a 619 but Jericho avoids it and rips off his mask! Rey is unmasked!
In all the confusion Jericho pulls off a quick roll up and claims the I.C title too.
In classic ‘unmasked’ tradition Rey covered his face with his hands and rolled to the outside, giving fans little more than a glance at his face. That being said if they were really that bothered they could just find a picture of his unmasked period in WCW.
Jericho wins by Pinfall and becomes the NEW Intercontinental Champion.
Segment 2
Another Josh Matthews Interview
Backstage Josh Matthews speaks to Batista about his match tonight and what happened to Ric Flair on Raw. Batista said it’s one thing to punt him and put him on the shelf but when he does it to a legend like Ric Flair, that’s a different story.
Batista said if Orton thinks tonight is the end he’s mistaken as it’s only the beginning. He said he plans to take the title tonight but his entire Legacy in the future.
Match 3
Samoan Strap Match
Umaga
Vs.
C.M Punk
As Umaga made his way to the ring he boldly predicted that Umaga would win as he is the favourite in this kind of match. What insight he has!
It’s been a while since there’s been a strap/rope match so I’ll just go over the rules. To win the match you have to touch all 4 corners in succession (with your HAND, has to be your hand apparently) while dragging your opponent behind you.
WWE had kindly put a little image of the ring in the top corner to display who had touched which corners and whether they were still ‘in play’ or if they had been waved off by the referee. However in the early stages of the match the person in charge of this seemed to be either watching on a delayed broadcast or just wasn’t watching at all, as half the time it didn’t work and when it did it seemed to take an age to show up.
I’ve never been overly fond of the strap match but this one has been particularly dull up to this point. Punk hit 3 turnbuckles but Umaga sprang into life as he went after the 4th and beat him down, getting 3 turnbuckles lit himself before suffering a very similar fate.
In a typically dull ending Punk hit 3 turnbuckles before landing a GTS and falling into the last one with his hand outstretched to grab the ‘unlikely’ victory. J.R. admitted he was wrong.
C.M Punk wins by hitting all 4 turnbuckles.
Segment 3
Another Interview!
This time Gregory Helms gets the honour of asking the questions. He asks ECW Champion Christian what his mindset is going into his title defence.
He talks about it possibly being Dreamer’s last match and then says although they are friends and he will miss him, he knows that at the end of the show he will still be the ECW Champion and Tommy will be gone.
Dreamer shows up and they have a small set to before Swagger joins them. He tries to explain how he is going to leave as the champion but Dreamer and Christian blank him and walk off before he gets the chance.
Match 4
ECW Championship Hardcore Match
Christian (c)
Vs.
Tommy Dreamer
Vs.
Jack Swagger
No weapons in the first minute, I’m disappointed.
Looks like I spoke too soon, Dreamer and Christian just pulled out a selection of items from under the ring.
Dreamer grabbed a kendo stick and Christian grabbed a trash can lid and the paid wore out Swagger before turning on each other when Dreamer attempted a cover.
I wish they’d stop using these trash cans/lids. It’s so blatantly obvious they are made from like tin foil.
Dreamer hits a cannonball from the apron to the outside on both the other guys, interoperating one of the aforementioned trash cans, then hung Swagger up in the tree of woe and placed another one at his face. Christian prevented him from hitting the ‘E..C..W’ dropkick into the can, then decided to do it himself instead.
After recovering and taking Christian out of the picture Swagger filled the ring with trash cans and began battling Dreamer before stacking all the cans up and planning a Superplex onto them. Christian returned to the ring to go for a 3 man Superplex which was pretty impressive even though it did miss a lot of the cans tha thad been laid out.
Swagger bounces Christian’s head off the exposed turnbuckle and goes for the Gutwrench Powerbomb but Dreamer interjects himself and breaks a crutch over his head. Seconds later he hits a Dreamer DDT on Swagger and grabs the 3 count to win the ECW Championship and prolong his career.
I didn’t think it would happen and I wouldn’t be surprised if Dreamer didn’t retire soon anyway, he wasn’t amazing tonight by any stretch of the imagination. That being said I’m happy for him and he’s one of the few (if not the only) shred of the original ECW left around.
Tommy Dreamer wins by Pinfall and becomes the NEW ECW Champion.
Segment 4
Piggy Guerrero prepares
Backstage Chavo helps ‘Miss WrestleMania’ prepare for her match by letting her punch his hands while he wears a pig nose and tells her the fans and Santino are calling her a pig.
His pig impressions intensify so much that she eventually punches him in the snout and storms out, seemingly ready for her hog pen match.
Match 5
Miss WrestleMania Hog Pen Match
Santina Marella
Vs.
Vickie Guerrero
Before the match King explains the rules of the match which seem to have changed since HHH took on Henry O. Godwin in 1995. Instead of the point being to throw your opponent into the hog pen to win the match, this time both competitors have a normal match inside the pen.
Vickie Guerrero comes out in a gown and announces that he has made it a 2 on 1 match with Chavo as her partner, ordering him to get in the pen and fight on her behalf. He reluctantly does as she says and the match begins, with Vickie standing on the outside in a cheerleader type role.
After some very limited wrestling Chavo gets the upper hand and tags in Vickie to make the pin. Santina recovers and threatens to throw a bucket of slop over her but Chavo jumps in and prevents it before grabbing a bucket of his own and aiming for Santina.
In one of those ‘cream pie in the face’ moments Santina dodges out of the way and the slop covers Vickie who had been standing behind him/her. Chavo then gets a bucket over the head for his troubles and Santina grabs a pinfall over Vickie to regain the Miss WrestleMania crown.
Well that was just awful.
Santina Marella wins by Pinfall and becomes the NEW Miss WrestleMania.
Segment 5
Humiliated Guerrero’s
Backstage Chavo tries to console Vickie while she blames him for the loss. They bump into Goldust and Hornswoggle and The Bizarre One asks her if she can sign off some expense forms. She isn’t too obliging and Goldust’s tourettes leads him to say she smells like ‘Shit..Shit…Shitake’ Mushrooms’.
They then find Edge sitting in their office and he questions what she has become after 2 months away from him. He says he needs to talk strategy with his wife and she says that as he wasn’t there when she needed him he will have to face Jeff completely on his own without the help of any Raw superstars.
Edge tells her that she should get a good divorce lawyer as tonight he is bringing both his rivalry against Jeff Hardy and his sham of a marriage to an end.
Match 6
WWE Championship Steel Cage Match
Randy Orton (c)
Vs.
Batista
Both men make their way inside the cage, the door is shut, Lillian Garcia does the introductions and the match begins.
Orton is out of the cage early and all he had to do was drop to retain the title, but Batista forcefully pulled him back in by the head while King explained how good the strategy was.
Batista began to dominate and despite Orton almost scaling the cage and escaping through the door twice, The Animal looks completely in control and well on the way to winning the WWE Championship while avenging his two wronged mentors in the process.
One moment of pure opportunity later and Orton has taken advantage, driving Batista’s head into the middle turnbuckle and building some offence, before reversing a Batista Bomb which threw The Animal into the steel leaving him trapped between the ropes and the cage.
Orton began to climb and could have easily escaped but he saw Batista getting to his feet and decided to go back and finish him off with a Punt. Batista managed to avoid the impact.
Batista Bomb! 1..2..3!
That finish came out of nowhere and I really didn’t expect it to happen like that, I’m not sure I’m pleased with the result as I’d have liked to see Orton hold onto the gold a lot longer, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see where this leads.
Not an awful match but again slightly shorter than I’d have expected.
Batista wins by Pinfall and becomes the NEW WWE Champion.
Match 7
Submission Match
The Big Show
Vs.
John Cena
Yawn.
I don’t need the toilet, but if I did this is the opportunity I’d take to go.
Nothing against either guy but this rivalry has been boring as sin and the sooner it comes to an end the better.
ALL the build-up to this match has been regarding Cena’s inability to lock in a winning submission hold on The Big Show, so obviously he’s going to somehow pull one out of the bag and win the match.
The sole perk of not seeing this event live is the fact I can fast forward through this match, had I not been able to do I think I would probably have fallen asleep. In double time it was just about bearable.
Show had the upper hand for the first ten minutes or so until Cena locked in a Sleeper that seemed to last for an eternity. Show fought out of it and continues his dominance by working Cena’s ribs in preparation for a submission hold.
An opportunity for Cena arose as Show attempted least hit move in his arsenal and possibly ever in the WWE; the giant elbow drop from the second rope. As usual Show climbed to the second rope, bounced a bit and then crashed down the canvas where Cena was no longer waiting.
Cena foolishly tried to bodyslam the giant but his back wouldn’t allow it, putting the momentum back behind Show.
After another failed STF attempt Cena flew from the top rope only to be caught in a Bearhug which looked like it might be enough to end this match.
Cena fights back and hits an Attitude Adjustment (which was impressive but ultimately pointless) but again can’t lock on the STF.
Despite being hit with a Knock Out Punch Cena made Show tap out by locking him in a kind of STF using the rope to tie up his foot.
The two problems I had with the finish are that firstly Show’s foot pinged out of the ropes almost instantly leaving him in more of a Crossface than a STF.
Secondly if Show’s foot is in the ropes then I would assume that breaks the hold, unless rope breaks are no longer valid in Submission Matches but no one bothered to tell us.
Either that or they have never been valid and I haven’t noticed, but all in all a poor finish to a poor match in a poor rivalry.
John Cena wins by Submission.
Main Event Match
World Heavyweight Championship Ladder Match
Edge (c)
Vs.
Jeff Hardy
Two of the best ladder match competitors of all time meet again for the World Heavyweight Title. I’m prepared to say this will be the best match on the card even before it’s begun.
Jeff is the first to go after some equipment, grabbing one of the numerous sets of ladders set up at ringside. Edge took advantage of the situation and used a baseball slide to send the unforgiving steel into Jeff’s ribs.
This advantage was short lived and after throwing Edge over the top rope and into a ladder, Jeff began to climb for the title but was promptly stopped and the brawling continues.
Edge went for a Spear and got nothing but steel then moments later Jeff went for a low dropkick that had much the same results.
Edge just scaled the ladder but didn’t even get half way up before Jeff flew from the top rope and knocked it over, sending both men and the metal to the canvas. The match continues.
Innovative offence from Jeff Hardy as he stands the ladder upside down and drops Edge over the folding support arms in the middle.
Jeff has found a gigantic ladder that must be about 15 feet high! He looked to be planning a leg drop from the top of it but after Edge rolled out of the way he tipped it and grabbed the title belt, hanging there until he was pulled down from it landing hard on the metal.
Whisper in the Wind from about 3/4 of the way up the massive ladder! This match is getting really good now.
Two ladders in the ring but no competitors as Jeff clotheslines Edge over the top rope, the momentum taking him over too. Edge recovers and lays a ladder from the ring to the guard rail, this isn’t going to be pretty.
After brawling involving the steel steps both men make their way back around to the precariously placed ladder and Jeff lays Edge across it before setting up yet another gigantic ladder right next to it.
Edge recovers again and climbs up to meet Hardy where they battle before tipping and both fall onto the other ladder, buckling it and doing both men untold damage (Edge seemed to come off worse.)
Both competitors get back into the ring very quickly and climb separate ladders before diving off at each other in a sort of Spear/Twist of Fate combination which Jeff seemingly came out of on top.
First Jeff has his hands on the gold, then Edge. Jeff pulled Edge through the rungs of the ladder and trapped him before scaling the ladder and snatching the title to win what has been an epic ladder match!
J.R joins Hardy in the ring and looks like he is about to interview the new champion but C.M Punk’s music hits the speakers and Mr. Money in the Bank runs to the ring and cashes in his briefcase!
Jeff Hardy wins the match and becomes the NEW World Heavyweight Champion.
Main Event Match II
Money In The Bank World Hevyweight Championship Match
Jeff Hardy (c)
Vs.
C.M Punk
Punk hits the GTS but Jeff kicks out! Jeff goes for a rollup and almost retains the title but seconds later Punk hits another GTS and covers for the inevitable 3 count!
Shocking scenes and I think the crowd have completely turned on Punk after this, either that or they are in stunned silence.
C.M Punk wins by Pinfall and becomes the NEW World Heavyweight Champion.
The End
Not a bad PPV all in all although some matches could have done with being a bit longer and others could have done with being way shorter (or even better removed altogether.)
The ending was certainly a shock and it’ll be interesting to see where Punk goes from here as although he earned the right to, he has pretty much screwed over one of the biggest fan favourites in the WWE.
