Breaking Point 2009 Previews and Predictions
Previews and Predictions of all the matches scheduled to take place at Breaking Point 2009.

So rather than the usual ‘Additional Content’ section it will now be ‘GRuz’s Views’! Sounds good doesn’t it!
For all the JayD fans out there, never fear as he’s still put in the work on the more ‘formal’ articles, which you can find at the links below.
Here’s the link for JayD’s Smackdown preview:

GRuz’s Views
ECW Championship Match
Singles Match
Christian (c)
Vs.
William Regal
When I wrote my predictions, this match still hadn’t been confirmed so I didn’t bother with it.
However, since then it has been placed on the card so I guess I should give it a mention.
The short version is that Regal has been underused for years now and due to the fact Christian’s return to the WWE has been butchered so badly, I’d love to see the title put around the waist of Mr. Regal.
But it won’t happen.
Outcome:
Christian will keep hold of the belt despite Kozlov and Jacksons best attempts to help Regal pry it from him.
Grudge Match
Singapore Cane Match
Kane
Vs.
The Great Khali
Somewhere, in the deepest part of WWE Headquarters in Stamford, CT, is a very old and very dead horse. And the WWE writers are unable to stop themselves from beating it.
What I mean by this is that they will start stupid rivalries that nobody cares about, and instead of letting them die off, they inexplicably continue them for weeks and then months. Of course, even more inexplicable is the fact that the Great Khali is in the WWE at all.
The man has no wrestling ability, no charisma. He’s a bore to watch. He’s PAINFUL to watch.
But even more painful is the obviousness in which Glen Jacobs, a.k.a. Kane, only continues to wrestle because he’s picking up a paycheck.
I’ve always liked Kane, and have always felt that he was underused. Some of you older WWE fans will remember that at one time Kane and the Undertaker were both equally pushed, were both at the very top of the WWE heap. Kane had rivalries with Stone Cold Steve Austin, the Rock, Mankind, and so on.
Where do things stand these days?
The Undertaker fights Shawn Michaels in what was easily the best match of Wrestlemania 25 and then returns to Smackdown last week to an enormous pop…and Kane is slated for a Singapore Cane match with an 8-foot tall hack and almost nobody cares.
How sad.
This is going to be one of those “I’m going to go hit the john” matches.
How the mighty have fallen.
Outcome:
How do you predict a match like this?
It sounds to me like you just beat the hell out of the other guy with a cane until it’s over.
Just the thought of the Great Khali stumbling around with a cane makes me cringe. The guy can barely punch people, let along swing weapons.
So I pick Kane to win, just in the hopes that by winning he will at least retain some dignity.
After he beats down Khali, he should go in the back and cane the crap out of some script writers and possibly Vince himself for so badly ruining what used to be a promising career.
Unified Tag Team Championships Match
Tag Team Match
Chris Jericho & The Big Show (c)
Vs.
M.V.P & Mark Henry
One of my usual gripes about the WWE is that they have the same matches with the same guys over and over and OVER again. At least I can’t complain about that here.
I tend to kinda like these mixed tag matches, i.e. one smaller guy and one monster per team. Depending on whether they add the submission element of this PPV and to it, it could get just a little more interesting.
Another interesting thing about that is that only one of these four guys is really known as a submission specialist - Chris Jericho.
Sure, The Big Show or Henry could put someone in a bear hug or some other submission hold but how funny would it be watching Show trying to put somebody in a Figure Four or (Crippler) Crossface?
Jericho and Show have had the titles for a while, which generally suggests they’re being set up for a fall. Combine that with the fact that only Jericho regularly uses submissions and the fact that WWE writers just LOVE to give the win to teams that appear to be the underdog and it looks even worse for the champs.
Outcome:
Jericho and Show win.
Because I left out one key detail in my above description - Henry and M.V.P. have been embarrassing the champs at every opportunity leading up to Breaking Point. This happens a lot - champs run their mouths, challengers beat them over and over leading up to a PPV, but can’t get it done when it really matters.
Furthermore, It bothers me that when Henry started getting that strange pop from crowds, they just threw him in the tag team division. I really hoped they would give Henry a title shot (which he deserves) as a face. But no, they just waste him in tag team matches. So yeah, maybe they’re using his semi-face turn to give him a lesser title belt, but my hunch is that the champs retain.
Look for a good ol’ Walls of Jericho on M.V.P. because that’s probably the only thing that’s humanly possible in this match, if it is indeed submission stipulated.
Intercontinental Championship Match
Singles Match
John Morrison (c)
Vs.
Dolph Ziggler
Thanks to Rey Mysterio’s current *ahem* “unwellness”, the WWE had him drop the Intercontinental title to John Morrison on Smackdown recently in one of the best non-PPV matches I’ve seen in a long time. Frankly, it was quite a bit better than a lot of PPV matches lately. So there goes the Mysterio/Ziggler rivalry for now.
That leaves Ziggler fighting Morrison for the IC title.
The WWE hasn’t had time to set up a storyline with these two, but they have had some experience against each other in the past. Morrison has the skill to make this a candidate for ‘Match of the Year’; the only question is if Ziggler’s slightly slower and clunkier form of wrestling will be able to keep up.
Who’ll win?
This is a tough one. It makes me wonder who they had pegged to win if the original Mysterio/Ziggler match hadn’t fallen through. Most likely Mysterio, seeing as how the WWE writers can barely ever bring themselves to pencil him in to lose.
So what now?
Outcome:
I have to pick Ziggler.
The WWE script guys hate to have their plans ruined by unforeseen events. They’re going to have a Mysterio/Ziggler match down the road no matter what, because that’s what they had planned.
First step is to give the title to Ziggler, have him hold it for the 30 days that Mysterio’s out, and then have him defend against Mysterio when he’s reinstated.
It doesn’t help that I don’t think I’ve ever seen Morrison use a submission hold as a finisher. He can do 10 Starship Pains in a row and it’s not going to make someone tap out.
It’s a shame, too, because I think John Morrison is a terrific wrestler, terrific seller of moves, the total package. This guy could be an A-list star eventually.
I’m rooting for Morrison, but Dolph Ziggler takes this one.
Breaking News Update!
So it turns out this match has been bumped in favour of a U.S Title match.
What an awful move. Ziggler and Morrison are tried and tested; the first and only time they met on an ECW show a little way back they put on a fantastic match and I’m sure this one would have been even better with the gold on the line.
Yet they bump it for a Kofi Kingston Vs. The Miz match because it’s supposedly had more build-up.
The truth is it’s had The Miz crowing about how he deserves the title and not a lot else.
This is a really disappointing move from the WWE Writers and what’s more upsetting is the way they failed to even acknowledge that until a few days before the event it was listed on their website and mentioned on a handful of shows as a confirmed match.
I get that cards are subject to change, but when both guys are fit and able it seems like a stupid move to sub something off that fans may have (and I’m sure were) looking forward to.
Grudge Match
Tag Team Submissions Count Anywhere Match
DX
Vs.
Legacy
I’m often wrong about this kind of thing, but something about this match seems off to me.
It’s probably because there are so many x-factors in this rivalry. Was Shawn Michaels so hard to persuade to come back to DX because it was a funny comedic plot or foreshadowing of a possible betrayal?
Are the members of Legacy really behind Randy Orton or are they finally tired of his crap?
It just seems kinda weird.
There are too many simmering interwoven feuds here for this to be just a straight up match. Probably a good thing, too, as this rivalry is in danger of entering ‘dead horse’ territory as well. Seriously, how long as this one been going on?
Outcome:
I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that Legacy wins after Shawn Michaels gets injured or something else related to not being ready and “in shape” for this match.
This leads to another heel turn by HHH against Michaels.
One or both members of Legacy stick up for Michaels, leading Orton and HHH to attack him/them. So you’ve got a heel turn by HHH and a face turn by either one member of Legacy or both members.
Yeah, that’s unlikely, but it feels like there’s something going on here as far as these two teams. Both are shaky right now, and can you imagine how much of a genius I’ll look if I’m right?
World Heavyweight Championship Match
Submission Match
C.M Punk (c)
Vs.
The Undertaker
I love the Undertaker. What old WWE fan doesn’t?
But going back to my Kane/Taker gripe, all the Undertaker has to do is show up and he has title shots thrown at him.
Meanwhile, Kane slogs along in the mid-card and will almost definitely never be given a WWE title shot ever again.
But I digress.
Dammit, C.M. Punk is a great heel. And the man can cut a great promo.
This was made painfully apparent in his feud with Jeff Hardy, probably the worst promo-cutter in the business right now. As a champion, Punk can p*ss off a crowd like nobody I’ve seen in years.
His “Straight Edge; I’m better than you” stuff is hilarious. So when somebody like him wins the belt, I tend to want him to be champion for a while.
Love him or hate him, C.M. Punk isn’t boring. When he talks, you listen, even if just to boo and I love that. There’s nothing worse in wrestling than a rivalry or a wrestler that nobody cares about, a match that has no pop, a promo that nobody pays attention to.
That’s not the case here.
Punk is such a great judge of crowds and has spent such time honing his skill in front of the camera that whatever he’s doing, you’re not going to be bored. But his days as a champion could be numbered.
Outcome:
Finally we come to a match with two guys known for their submission prowess.
C.M. Punk’s Anaconda Vice against The Undertaker’s Hell’s Gate.
Which one comes out on top?
I’m going to pick C.M. Punk in a minor upset and here’s why;
He just finished taking out the Hardys before he gets blindsided in some sudden rivalry with the Undertaker. It would be a disservice for everyone to just have Taker waltz in and win the title with no lead-in.
This also goes back to my Mania 25 prediction when I picked Shawn Michaels to beat The Deadman.
One of the reasons was that Taker is known behind the scenes as a generous guy and known to take falls without complaint.
I was wrong in my prediction but the fact that he’s a team player hasn’t changed. I think that the Undertaker will EVENTUALLY win this title and he’ll win it from C.M. Punk, but not until the rivalry is further established.
Taker rarely submits, but he will here, and the excuse will be given that he’s rusty.
Whatever the reason, C.M. Punk retains the title.
WWE Championship Match
I Quit Match
Randy Orton (c)
Vs.
John Cena
It’s funny that John Cena should be involved in an “I Quit” match, because most of the WWE fans that I know feel like screaming that whenever they have to watch Cena.
How has this guy not been given a heel turn yet?
He’s one of the most unpopular faces I’ve ever seen.
Memo to WWE writers: You can’t continually pencil in a guy as a face if everyone hates him.
That being said, Cena is here to stay and will be for years, barring unforeseen injury, so on with the match.
As an admitted Cena-hater, I have a bad feeling about this match. BOY, do I have a bad feeling.
ALL the stars are aligned to give the belt to Cena.
Earlier I predicted all kinds of shenanigans in the DX/Legacy match, and if that happens how I’m predicting, there’s no chance Orton retains the title.
Even if it doesn’t, I seriously doubt anything will be happening in the match to resolve the tension between Orton and Legacy. So you’ve got Orton, who’s been champion for a long time (another bad sign), against Cena with either disgruntled members or full-blown deserters of Legacy lurking around.
Not good.
If Legacy doesn’t implode and HHH doesn’t turn heel, then maybe he shows up and gives Orton a beat down in their longstanding rivalry. All sorts of things could happen here, and very few of them look good for Orton.
Outcome:
Much to my chagrin, but not to my surprise, I think Cena beats Orton and wins the title.
Orton has had the title for a near-eternity in WWE terms. His team is shaky and in a match against his biggest rival earlier in the card.
I just don’t see this match turning out any other way unless the writers just have an incredible surprise in the works that I’m not figuring out.
There are a lot of options to sort through regarding a title-holding Cena and possible future rivalries, but Orton’s reign is pretty much played out.
I think Orton’s a great heel champ, but for now, that’s over.
The End
Thanks for reading my first solo foray into previews and predictions writing. I hope you consider joining JayD for the Live Results which will take place as soon as the show begins on Sunday…Obviously.
