Bragging Rights 2009 Live Results
Welcome once again to WWEBlog.co.uk’s live results for Bragging Rights 2009!
Truth be told we almost missed the start of Bragging Rights thanks to the clocks rolling back an hour yesterday over here in the U.K.
But luckily we noticed just in time!
It’s our pleasure to keep you informed on what’s going on tonight, I’m JayD and I’ll be your Journalist for this evening, so sit back, grab a drink, some snacks and get ready to find out who the dominant brand is at Bragging Rights 2009!
Opening Match
Champion Vs. Champion Bragging Rights Match
The Miz (c)
Vs.
John Morrison (c)
We’re kicking off with a Bragging Rights match right off the bat and there’s exciting news!
Well, I say exciting, it isn’t really. The brand who wins at Bragging Rights (best of 3 across the cross-promotional matches) will win a Bragging Rights Trophy! Woo!
Michael Cole, King and Todd Grisham are on commentary tonight, as J.R is still off sick.
The ring has been divided into a Raw and a Smackdown side, with the ropes being half and half, if you’re struggling to imagine it think of one of those magnets you used to use in school that were half blue and half red.
As both participants make their way to the ring we get a glimpse of both main event teams watching backstage, both look pretty solid at the minute.
The bell rings and the match gets under way!
Morrison gets the upper hand early and The Miz rolls to the outside to take a moment for himself, drawing huge boos from the crowd.
It doesn’t look like the crowd are pulling for a particular brand tonight, as they seem to be universally booing Miz and cheering for Morrison, that or they are all huge Smackdown fans.
Roll up from Morrison almost scores a 3 count but The Miz escapes, seconds later he takes a trip over the top rope.
Cut to the Raw locker room looking less than impressed.
This one is bouncing back and forth now, The Miz locks in a submission but Morrison escapes from it in an ‘unorthodox style’ (according to Michael Cole) only for The Miz to hit his trademark corner Clothesline and grab a near fall.
Morrison gets the better of a Slugfest and grabs a 2 count, but moments later Miz avoids a Knee to the face and claims a 2 count of his own.
Flying Chuck! 1..2..The Miz gets his foot on the rope and completely confuses King, who explains (at about 100 words a second) that he thought the referee had gone crazy.
Morrison sets The Miz up for Starship Pain but the US Champion slides to the outside. Morrison flies from the top rope and takes him out on the outside instead.
Back in the ring The Miz goes for the Skull Crushing Finale but Morrison escapes and begins to set up for the Starship Pain once again.
The Miz springs to his feet and pulls Morrison from the top, sending him crashing to the canvas.
The Miz covers for the 1.2.3, claiming the first victory for the Red Brand!
A very good match but the ending was pretty poor, Morrison’s tumble from the top didn’t even look that bad.
The Miz wins by Pinfall.
Raw 1 - 0 Smackdown
Segment 1
Trash Talking
Backstage Cody Rhodes is preparing for tonight’s main event and bragging to the trainer about how Raw have just gone 1-0 up.
R-Truth enters and tells him that he shouldn’t be getting too cocky because there are two Bragging Rights matches left to go.
Cody lays into R-Truth and Smackdown in general, saying he is a 2nd rate performer, on a 2nd rate team, on a 2nd rate show.
Truth responds by telling him that the only reason he is on Raw is because of his father and Randy Orton.
Big Show appears and says that Truth has learned a lot from Jericho, mainly how to take verbal cheap shots.
Show finishes by saying that Raw will let their actions speak for themselves in the ring.
Match 2
3 on 3 Divas Tag Team Bragging Rights Match
Michelle McCool, Beth Phoenix & Natalya
Vs.
Melina, Kelly Kelly & Gail Kim
This one is pretty much a forgone conclusion after the last match.
I might be setting myself up for a fall here, but I highly doubt that Raw will go 2 up and end the contest at this early stage of the night.
Of all the Divas in this match, I’d have to say that Natalya is the one I enjoy watching the most, she just seems to have that extra touch of skill and finesse that some of the others lack.
Team Raw started off the stronger but Natalya has put an end to that and the three beauties of Team Smackdown are currently isolating Kelly Kelly, taking cheap shots whenever they get the chance.
Phoenix tags herself in, immediately falls victim to a near fall and allows Kelly Kelly to tag in Melina.
Melina hit the Primal Scream (I don’t know if that’s what it’s called, but it sounds good enough) and had the match in the bag, but Natalya and McCool broke up the pinfall.
The match has completely broken down now, there are divas everywhere.
Glam Slam! Melina hits the canvas hard and Beth covers 1..2..3.
Smackdown tie it up, now there’s a huge surprise.
Not awful but I’m guessing it isn’t the best match we’ll see tonight.
Michelle McCool, Beth Phoenix & Natalya win by Pinfall.
Raw 1 - 1 Smackdown
Segment 2
Raw Pep Talk
The Raw locker room are looking a little disheartened after that loss, so Triple H decides to try and lift morale with a speech.
Jack Swagger cuts him off and tells him that they don’t need this little ‘rah rah speech’, he’s on the team so that automatically makes them better than the Smackdown team.
HBK cuts in and tells him that while he might have all the athletic ability in the world, he doesn’t have anyone’s respect.
Triple H echoes this sentiment and begins to explain that technically the Raw team shouldn’t get along at all.
He says that for years they have been making fun of Mark Henry for almost having a baby with Mae Young, and Henry responds by saying that was a long time ago.
He says that they have shoved Mr. McMahon’s head up Big Show’s ass, beaten Cody Rhodes to within an inch of his life and most importantly exposed Kofi Kingston as a phoney Jamaican.
Kofi says that he did it because he was paying tribute to his Jamaican heritage.
HBK says that the fact is no one on Team Raw really likes DX, but they do respect them.
He says that Swagger can walk out if he likes, they’ll replace him with the first person they see.
Hornswoggle enters still dressed as Shawn and he quickly changes his mind.
Triple H dismisses the ‘little goblin’ then delivers a rousing speech, asks if they are all ready and calls for a ‘hands in’, which everyone eventually participates in to the shout of ‘RAW!’
Match 3
Fatal 4 Way World Heavyweight Championship Match
The Undertaker (c)
Vs.
Batista
Vs.
Rey Mysterio
Vs.
C.M Punk
Punk got some serious heat as he made his way down to the ring for this one.
Once all 4 guys were in the ring Tony Chimmel did the introductions, during which Punk threw his shirt at Batista, enraging The Animal before ducking out of the ring with a big grin on his face.
As soon as the bell rang Punk made a bee-line for Rey, knocking him to the floor then again fleeing as Batista advanced.
This has started off at an incredible pace, with bodies flying all over the place, I’ll try my best to keep up!
Taker has assumed control of things, taking out Punk and Rey, and now working over Batista with the Old School.
Taker goes for Old School on Rey this time but Punk appears and cheap shots the pair of them, delivering a Superplex on Taker moments later.
Rey comes from nowhere and lands the Senton Splash on Taker! 1…2.. Punk breaks things up and again tosses Rey to the outside.
Batista does a number on Punk and begins to warm up for The Batista Bomb but Taker puts a stop to it.
Rey flies from the top rope but Taker catches him and looks for the Last Ride, but Batista hits him with a Spear leading to a stand off between him and Rey.
619 on Taker! Right into a Spinebuster from Batista! 1..2.. Punk breaks up another pinfall and the match continues!
Hells Gate on Batista! Batista is struggling to get to the rope which is fingertips away but he can’t reach!
Punk again makes the save!
Last Ride on Punk! 1..2.. This time it’s Batista’s turn to break things up. Wow I really wasn’t expecting much from this match but it’s been 100 miles a minute so far.
Slugfest between Taker and Batista, with the crowd booing all of The Animal’s shots, surprisingly.
Chokeslam! 1..2.. Punk AGAIN to make the save!
Taker sets Punk up for the Chokeslam but he avoids it, only to get dumped out of the ring for his troubles.
The Deadman is calling for the Tombstone as Batista gets to his feet, but The Animal reverses it into a Batista Bomb!
Rey Mysterio breaks up the cover and goes for one of his own! 1..2.. Batista breaks it up and begins yelling ‘you’re supposed to be my friend!’
Batista dumps Rey to the outside but turns right into a Chokeslam! 1..2.. Batista kicks out!
I think that’s the first kick out of the match.
Taker positions himself for the Chokeslam yet again but Batista breaks free and they take each other out with double Clotheslines.
Punk slithers back into the ring and covers both men, but can’t get a 3 count over either.
Mysterio is back in now but Batista catches him and throws him onto Punk on the outside.
TOMBSTONE on Batista! 1..2..3! It’s all over and what a match!
I really wasn’t looking forward to this match, but it was (pardon the pun) Phenomenal.
After the match Josh Mathews enters the ring where Batista is on the canvas and Rey is checking to see if he is ok.
Josh asks Rey how he feels and he says that he doesn’t think they could have worked any harder and they both came close.
Rey hugs Batista and apologises.
Josh asks him more and Rey talks some more about how they both came close.
Josh then goes to Batista and asks him the same, he asks the crowd if they think they both came close, and they cheer.
Batista then says that he doesn’t think they came close, he thinks he came close and he’s tired of his best friend stabbing him in the back.
Rey tells him to quit playing and Batista says that he isnt.
He says that he’s going to rip his head off, then proceeds to clothesline him to the canvas and dump him out of the ring.
Batista then pins him to the apron and screams ‘You’re supposed to be my friend!’
As Rey begs him to stop Batista slams him brutally into the guard rail then delivers a kind of Orton-esque Punt. Finally he leaves, apparently the newest heel on Smackdown.
Well, I predicted there would be a huge turn tonight, but it looks like I might have picked the wrong guy!
The Undertaker retains the World Heavyweight Championship by Pinfall.
Match 4
7 on 7 Raw Vs. Smackdown Bragging Rights Match
Team Raw
Triple H
Shawn Michaels
Cody Rhodes
The Big Show
Mark Henry
Jack Swagger
Kofi Kingston
Vs.
Team Smackdown
Chris Jericho
Kane
Matt Hardy
R-Truth
Finlay
Tyson Kidd
D.H Smith
Oh ok, we’re doing this now?
Well, that’s thrown our Cena theories right out of the window.
Interestingly all of Team Smackdown are wearing Smackdown branded shirts, while on Team Raw DX have come in their own custom gear.
This match is no doubt going to be chaotic, but I’ll try and keep up with the main points.
Before this match a clips reel of fans guessing who would take Bragging Rights played, none of them came off particularly well and a few actually ended up looking more than a little foolish.
Kane and Big Show square off in the early going and Show takes the advantage for Raw.
Matt Hardy and Jack Swagger are going at it now and Smackdown has regained control.
The action has spilled to the outside and looks like erupting into a 14 man brawl, but somehow the referee (mini-naich) manages to restore order before a single punch is thrown and the match continues.
Enjoying Bragging Rights so far? Drop us a message and let us know what you think!
Finlay and HBK just butted heads in the ring, it’s a good old fashioned race to get to their feet.
Sweet Chin Music! But D.H Smith grabs a tag and along with Tyson Kidd hit a brutal double team that scores a near fall.
Jericho is in the ring for the first time now and begins to take advantage of the downed Michaels.
Team Smackdown are isolating HBK now.
Kane covers after a Dropkick but Shawn kicks out at 2. D.H Smith gets the tag and locks on a Sleeper hold.
Finally HBK tags in his DX team mate and Triple H quickly dispatches both members of The Hart Dynasty and Finlay for good measure, stacking them up on top of each other with Spinebusters.
Kane jumps into the ring illegally and hits The Game with a Chokeslam, but Kidd can’t cover quickly enough and only gets a 2 count.
Kofi and Jericho are the next pair to square off, with the Jamaican Ghanaian Sensation getting the upper hand and hitting Trouble In Paradise.
The cover is broken up and the match breaks down completely with finishers going off left and right.
Show hits Kane with a Spear then helps Kofi to the top rope, but then predictably turns on Team Raw, firstly Chokeslamming Kofi then drilling Triple H with a huge Right Hand.
Jericho crawls over Kofi for the cover and wins the trophy for Team Smackdown.
Special congratulations goes out to the WWE Creative Team. How long did it take you to come up with that one guys? About 5 minutes?
Team Smackdown win by Pinfall.
Raw 1 - 1 Smackdown
Team Smackdown win Bragging Rights.
Segment 3
Placing the Blame
Backstage Kofi is heading towards the locker room, looking particularly beaten up.
Cody Rhodes approaches behind him and tells him that he should hang his head in shame because he is the reason Team Raw lost.
Kingston says it didn’t go down like that and they lost because of Big Show, but Cody calls him a weak link and throws him into something hard, leaving him down and out.
Main Event Match
60 Minute No DQ WWE Championship Iron Man Match
Randy Orton (c)
Vs.
John Cena
It looks like the ECW Championship match has been scrapped.
Maybe they realised it didn’t have enough hype behind it, or maybe it was never scheduled for Bragging Rights and we just presumed wrong. Either way I can’t say as I’m that upset.
Orton starts the bout on top but takes a little too long taunting and Cena locks in the STF.
Orton taps out immediately! With 56 minutes left on the clock.
Randy Orton 0 - 1 John Cena
Orton regains control almost right away after the mandatory 30 second rest period and while he locks on a prolonged Sleeper Michael Cole explains that if we’re all tied up at 60 minutes it will go to sudden death.
Cena looks like he’s about to pass out.
Finally Cena breaks free and hits the Throwback, then climbs to the top and lands the Flying Leg Drop to the back of Orton’s neck.
RKO! Cena goes for the 5 Knuckle Shuffle but from out of nowhere Orton hits his finisher and levels the scores at the 10 minute mark.
Randy Orton 1 - 1 John Cena
The action has now spilled to the outside. Orton makes use of the steel steps then begins to strip down the announce table.
Television monitor to the skull of John Cena! 1..2.. Cena somehow kicks out, frustrating Orton who rolls him back in the ring and grabs a micraphone.
Orton looks like he’s about to say something but then drives it into Cena’s head, leading to another 2 count.
Cena has apparently picked up a rather nasty cut on the top of his head.
The referee stops the clock and orders Cena to let the medic check his head, but Cena bursts into life and beats Orton to the outside.
Orton whips Cena into the steps and blood explodes everywhere. Given WWE’s recent attitude towards blood in matches I’d say this is a genuine injury.
45 minutes left here and Cena is bleeding like the proverbial stuffed pig (get well soon J.R.)
Orton works the cut, driving fists down onto the top of Cena’s head.
Orton drops to his knees and begins pounding the canvas.
RKO… No! Cena countered and sets up for the 5 Knuckle Shuffle.
Attitude Adjustment! Hits it! No, wait, Orton countered it into a RKO.
Both men are down and covering each other, 1..2..3.
Bizarrely a fall to both men. The replay shows Orton countering the Attitude adjustment and it was beautiful.
Medics rush into the ring to check Cena during the rest period. 42 minutes and change to go.
Randy Orton 2 - 2 John Cena
The rest period comes to an end and it looks like the medics have glued Cena’s head up.
Attitude Adjustment from the top rope! Cena takes the lead!
Randy Orton 2 - 3 John Cena
This time Legacy hit the ring during the rest period!
DiBiase hits the Dream Street after a beat down, then they drag Orton across for the cover. 1..2..3!
Randy Orton 3 - 3 John Cena
Legacy look to do more damage but Kofi Kingston sprints down the ramp with a steel chair, sending them scattering to the back.
Cena’s head has started to bleed again, but he doesn’t let it bother him and takes Orton down.
Orton slithers to the outside and begins to head up the ramp but Cena catches him up and continues to beat him down.
The action has reached the good old technical area, where we are informed there is high voltage equipment.
Orton is back in control now and slams Cena’s head into some buttons, which sets off a pyro on the other side of the stage, scaring the hell out of the current WWE Champion.
Orton maintains control and hurls Cena through part of the set made up of lighting strips.
It was pretty brutal but the tech guys had added in some fireworks for good measure.
Orton covers and gets the 3 count with 34 minutes left on the clock. The first time he’s taken the lead in this match.
Randy Orton 4 - 3 John Cena
During the resting period Orton heads over to the pyro table again and begins setting them off, figuring out the spot on the stage where the fireworks erupt from.
He then nails Cena with a chair and drags his prone body onto the explosion spot before heading back over to the buttons.
Both the referee and the pyro’s guy try to stop him from setting them off, but he pushes the button anyway and…. nothing.
Orton goes crazy and begins pummelling every button he can find, eventually setting something off but just too late as Cena had rolled out of the way.
Why were there so many pyro’s left unexploded at this stage of the night anyway? A mystery for certain.
We’re half way through the match now and Orton still has a decisive upper hand.
Orton continues to beat Cena down.
Cena gets a quick roll up! 1..2..3!
Randy Orton 4 - 4 John Cena
26 minutes left to go and there’s nothing between these two Superstars.
Losing a pinfall during his dominating period seems to have sent Orton into a crazed frenzy.
He attacked Cena during the rest period and and now looks to be setting up a rope-assisted DDT from the apron to the outside.
Hits it ! 1..2..3!
Randy Orton 5 - 4 John Cena
Michael Cole describes the move as ‘taking the life out of Cena’ and it seems to have done the same to the crowd, they are deathly quiet during the rest period.
Orton tries another cover but Cena kicks out this time, although it wasn’t convincing by any stretch.
This match has been dead for the past 5 minutes or so, but at the 20 minute mark Cena fires back with a right hand.
Orton rolls to the outside and heads up the ramp, where Cena joins him and they begin to brawl again.
Orton gets the better of it and paces around his opponent, keeping his eye on the scoreboard.
Cena gets back to his feet and lands another punch, prompting Orton to run away again and head to the ring, running down the clock a little more.
18 minutes to go now.
Orton goes for the standard rope-assisted DDT this time but Cena escapes and goes for the Attitude Adjustment!
Orton hits Cena in the head with an elbow and slides off his back, exiting the ring and this time running into the crowd.
Cena catches up with him at the top of some steps and scores a shot with a trash can.
The challenger is in control now, sending Orton down a set of steps and somehow even deeper into the fans.
Orton almost takes out someone’s undoubtedly extortionately priced chips n’ dip combo, but the wily fan rescues the platter and makes sure no harm comes to it.
Back inside the barricades now and Cena whips Orton into the steps for a 2 count.

Cena slams Orton into the barricade a few times, then slams him THROUGH the barricade next to the announce table.
Orton crumbles as Cena drives the steel steps into him.
Cena says something about finishing Orton, then sets up a full set of steel steps next to the announce table.
He picks Orton up and throws him onto his back in an Attitude Adjustment position, then begins to climb the steel steps with a look of determination etched on his face.
Attitude Adjustment through the announce table! 1..2..3! We’re tied again with 9 minutes to go!
Randy Orton 5 - 5 John Cena
Please don’t say Cena is going to win this one!
As soon as the rest period comes to an end Cena goes for another cover but thankfully Orton kicks out at 2.
Cena has set up a table in the ring. He’s trying to carry Orton into the ring but he’s dead weight.
Finally he gets Orton into the ring. The WWE Champion hasn’t stirred yet.
Cena awkwardly drags Orton onto the slab of wood and begins to climb to the top rope.
The King says he doesn’t think this is wise and he’s right, as Orton rolls off the table and leaves Cena to crash through it.
5 minutes remain!
4 minutes now and neither guy looks like grabbing a pinfall any time soon.
A rather laboured slugfest now, Cena seems to be the one receiving the boos.
Cena goes for the Shoulder Tackle, Orton ducks…
Ref Bump!
RKO! But there’s no referee!
Mini-Naich hits the ring but that delay costs Orton, Cena kicks out at 2.
Orton drills Mini-Naich, but there’s no DQ’s! The match continues, 1.45 on the clock and again no referee!
Orton goes for the Punt but Cena avoids it and locks in the STF with a minute to go!
Don’t tap Randy!
2o seconds, Orton is barely hanging on.
With 3 seconds to go Orton taps out! Cena’s the champion! Boooooooo.
Randy Orton 5 - 6 John Cena
Cena’s staying on Raw, you have GOT to be kidding me.
Not only does this mean that Cena’s champ and he’s staying on Raw, but it also means that Orton can’t challenge for the title again until he drops it.
Well, despite the outcome this match was epic and certainly worthy of being mentioned alongside The Rock/Triple H and HBK/Bret Hart.
John Cena wins 6 to 5 and becomes the NEW WWE Champion.
The End
Well thanks for joining us for Bragging Rights 2009.
All in all it was better than I expected it to be, but the result of the Iron Man match has left me in complete shock.
